Fishbowl Summer Superlatives – THE RESULTS!

Now that everyone has had a chance to vote, the results are in for the FishbowlDC Superlatives. We’ll be rolling out the results today and tomorrow, so be on the lookout to see how your nominees did.

Biggest Self Promoter– This was the closest vote that we had in the whole competition. It was between Former Daily Caller reporter Michelle Fields, ABC News White House Correspondent Jake Tapper, The Daily Beast and CNN’s Howard Kurtz, WaPo’s Chris Cillizza and Publicist Tammy Haddad. The photo finish saw Tammy Haddad beat out Fields by only five votes! Congratulations Tammy!

Worst Temper– The candidates were Mother Jones’s David Corn, Politico’s Jim VandeHei, Politico’s Tim Grieve, Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher, and Slate’s Matt Yglesias. The people have spoken and they say Tim Grieve has the worst temper in Washington! We’d congratulate him, but we’re afraid it might set him off.

Favorite Flack– We asked you to choose between POTUS campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki, Mitt Romney spokesman Brendan Buck, House Maj. Leader Eric Cantor’s Deputy Chief of Staff Doug Heye and NRCC’s Brian Walsh (pitched as Drama and Turtle), C-SPAN’s Howard Mortman, and House Maj. Whip Kevin McCarthy spokeswoman Erica Elliott. Despite a last minute push by Mortman, the winners were Doug Heye and Brian Walsh!

Most Likely to Wind Up in Jail– The <del>suspects</del> choices were Politico’s Joe Williams, PR Exec. David Bass, BuzzFeed’s John Stanton, The Daily Caller’s David Martosko, The Daily Caller’s Neil Munro, Reason‘s Mike Riggs and freelancer Moe Tkacik. The overwhelming winner was Joe Williams.

Class Clown: This category was a joke. The results were the most lopsided in all of the superlatives. The contenders were Sirius XM’s Julie Mason, Roll Call HOH’s Neda Semnani, Yahoo! News’ Olivier Knox, Reuter‘s Sam Youngman, The Atlantic‘s Scott Stossel, Wonkette and The Guardian‘s Jim Newell and The Drudge Report’s Charlie Hurt. Julie Mason walked away with this category with a crushing 46 percent of the vote.

Most likely to end up with a reality show– In D.C., there are PLENTY of options, but we narrowed them down to Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher, ABC7’s Stephen Tschida, TWT‘s Emily Miller, Susanna Quinn, Publicist Wendy Gordon, Publicist and blogger Janet Donovan, NBC’s Luke Russert, Current TV’s David Shuster, and CNN’s Roland Martin. The winner of this category was… Emily Miller! (Our advice would be to make sure you get the lighting right on her reality show or she might shoot the bulbs out.)

Thanks to everyone who voted, but we aren’t done yet with the big reveal. Check back tomorrow to find out the winners of all of our other categories, which include Best Writer, Sexiest, and Best On-Air Personality!

An Evening Swim in the Fishbowl

On Thursday night we welcomed upwards of 160 guests to Lost Society on U Street for a party so full of waves that some may never forget it. Journos climbed two super steep flights of stairs to reach the rooftop, which was filled with candles and drenched in rose petals. Notable guests in the crowd: Bloomberg‘s Margaret Carlson, The Daily Caller‘s Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson, USA Today‘s Jackie Kucinich, NJ‘s Major Garrett, GOP Consultant Ron Bonjean, TWT‘s Charlie Hurt, The Weekly Standard‘s Matt Labash, ABC7′s Stephen Tschida, WaPo‘s Erik Wemple, Capitol File Editor-in-Chief Kate Bennett, The Hill‘s Editor-at-Large Al Eisele and Managing Editor Bob Cusack, and CNN and former FishbowlDC Editor Matt Dornic. There are too many names to mention, but reporters, editors and publicists from the following news outlets showed up to down Belvedere Vodka cocktails and eat fish and chips, chicken waffles and bourbon s’mores: TPM, Politico, The Daily Caller, The Hill, Washington Examiner, ABC7, CNN, USA Today, HuffPost, Roll Call, NJ, Bloomberg, WaPo, TWT, Townhall.com, Thrillist, Breitbart’s Big Journalism, Yahoo! News, Washingtonian, UrbanDaddy.com, RCP, Q&A Celebrity, DCist, WaPo Express, Metro Weekly and The Times of London. FBDC favorite, Slate‘s Dave Weigel, unfortunately didn’t show — he was home with a cold. Conversation topics swung wildly from NYT Mark Leibovich‘s upcoming book on incestuous Washington, a mini-debate on male facial hair, journos doing stories on bras, stupid intern behavior, thin skinned journalists, a newsroom recently instructed to not site a publication that never sites them, The Drudge Report, The Daily Caller’s Media Matters series , the two speeds of The Daily Beast‘s Howard Kurtz, a hypothetical weed sale and whether “getting f–ked” is a good thing or an insult. No party is complete without Raptor Strategies’ David Bass. FBDC’s newest writers Peter Ogburn and Eddie Scarry were on hand to say hello to journos — well, most of them, anyhow. Peter spent the evening avoiding a certain editor whose name rhymes with Rucker Rarlson. He wasn’t the only one who feared coming face to face with Rarlson. Eddie, meanwhile, plotted his way into free vodka shots. Publicist Dannia Hakki, of Moki Media, organized the event. She has the patience of a saint.

Hollywood on the Potomac blogger and publicist Janet Donovan, who unfortunately didn’t make it into the party because she forgot her ID and the big, burly bouncer wasn’t taking chances, has a funny take on the evening here. Photo Credit: Dave Phillipich.

Labash Blowout Book Party: Marion Barry Has Arrived!

The Weekly Standard/Daily Caller Matt Labash’s book, Fly Fishing With Darth Vader: And Other Adventures With Evangelical Wrestlers, Political Hitmen, And Jewish Cowboys came to life Thursday night as characters from his anthology filed in one by one to the beautiful home of Daily Caller Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson and his wife, Susie. The evening was one of fun, frolic and, of course, drinking, as the Distilled Spirits Council sponsored the party with a well-stocked Scotch-filled bar.

Characters from the book who showed up to the festivities included Democratic political strategist and former campaign aide to Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) David “Mudcat” Saunders, Vanity Fair’s Christopher Hitchens and GOP consultant Roger Stone, who famously taught Labash how to properly tie a tie (he claims Labash still needs help). Stone (in photograph above with Labash) explained that he was leaving later to catch a train to Manhattan – his policy is to never stay overnight in D.C. as the town is too awful a place to remain too long. “I hate it,” he said. “People are phony.” (Stone splits his time between New York City and Miami.)

Soon the party turned into a roast.

“Nice house, not waspy enough,” Stone cracked. “I appreciate the enormous role I have played in making Matt Labash.” Stone joked that people always ask of Labash: ‘What’s with all the Hitler memorabilia?’

Saunders, to whom Labash devoted an entire chapter, said the author was much more than a writer but a life confidant whom he still phones for advice. “He knows enough about me to get me arrested,” he said. Initially, Saunders said, he feared a story about him appearing in The Weekly Standard: “I’m a Democrat. The Weekly Standard ain’t a damn Democrat publication.”

The party was the scene of scenes for D.C. journalists. Others in attendance: The Hill’s A.B. Stoddard, the New York Post’s Charlie Hurt, Reason’s Michael Moynihan, Edelman’s Exec. V.P. Tony Blankley, National Review’s Jonah Goldberg, D.C. media consultant David Bass, former Time scribe Tim Burger and Slate’s Editor David Plotz. The Atlantic’s Josh Green was there and spoke of the story he has been living as of late – that of Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) and the old Navy buddies who told him, among other sordid details, about the ex-congressman’s infamous Massa massage and now compelling “snorkeling”. Green joked, “I feel dirty talking about it.” More seriously, he called Massa the “Andy Dick of Congress.”

Lightening struck when former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry arrived. Late and decked out in a suit and cherry-colored tie, Barry stole the show. And for a good while, it was all guests could do but stare and snap cell phone pictures.

“It took me an hour to find this place,” Barry told the awed crowd, explaining his tardiness. “I wandered here and there and everywhere.”

Initially Labash had no idea that Barry that arrived. “No, no, I don’t publicly speak!” the author was imploring guests, unaware that his most striking character was about to weigh in.

Carlson explained to guests that The Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol was sorry he couldn’t attend – he was in Manhattan hanging out with former N.Y. Gov. Eliot Spitzer and Massa (everyone laughed). Carlson read a note from Kristol that said, in part, “When we hired Labash, we had hoped he’d become a star – we’re still hoping.”

Carlson, who wrote the introduction to Labash’s book, had solemn praise for Labash with a twist. “Matt doesn’t simply write about people,” said Carlson. “He takes them as lifelong friends – almost in a proctological way.” He said when subjects first read the stories Labash has written about them their first response is “horror.”

Then they realize that what Labash has written is true, that the author has maybe captured them more deeply than anyone ever has.

I’m nervous, even heartbroken, because of the toll that the dissolution of the old business models for the news business is taking both on dedicated practitioners of the trade and on trade itself…”

ONLINE

In a week when the biggest story out of the White House is arguably about beer, it seems fitting that ABC’s Jake Tapper took a break to interview Judd Apatow on the Political Punch Podcast.
Journos Gather at Ritz for RTNDF First Amendment Dinner

Last night was the First Amendment Awards Dinner at the Ritz Carlton, the 19th annual hosted by RTNDF.

The dinner was emceed by MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, who started by thanking his wife Kathleen (away on a skiing trip), his “ambassador to the human race.” He also thanked Rod Blagojevich, Sen. Roland Burris and Rahm Emanuel for producing numbers for Hardball and MSNBC. (A dinner guest points out to us that Matthews was still wearing his Hardball makeup.)

CNN’s Jack Womack presented the first award of the evening to colleague Susan Grant, the First Amendment Service Award. Grant joked she was sure “the board had run out of deserving journalists.”

ABC’s Charlie Gibson and Sam Donaldson brought a comedy act to present the Leonard Zeidenberg Award to Cokie Roberts. Some of their back-and-forth… Charlie: “Get your hands off me… I’m somewhat perturbed I have to share the podium with Sam.” Sam: “Women like older men- that’s me,” and Charlie: “Much older.”

Donaldson introduced a story about Roberts saying, “you can check this story, though I wouldn’t, it’s a good story,” to which Gibson replied, “like most of Sam’s stories.” Donaldson went on to tell about the time on the This Week with David Brinkey that John Tower asked what a womanizer was and Cokie looked at him and said, “I think most women know it when they see it, Senator.”

At her last dinner, RTNDF President Barbara Cochran honored the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation with a special award, which was accepted by Alberto Ibarguen. To much applause, Cochran called prompt freeing of detained journalist Roxana Saberi in Iran.

And the last award of the evening was presented to Google’s Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt by PBS’s Judy Woodruff, as the whole room pondered, what would we do without Google?

In attendance: Dana Perino, CNN’s newly acquired State of the Union EP Michelle Jaconi, sitting next to Gloria Borger, who received a warm hello from Linda Douglass, Rome Hartman deep in conversation with Sam Donaldson at the cocktail hour, Mike Allen blackberrying away outside the Ritz, Lara Logan back from maternity leave, Google’s Bob Boorstin, Mark Whitaker with new deputy bureau chief Antoine Sanfuentes, David Bass, Emily Heil, Karen Travers and so on.

A Dinner For Judith

Bloomberg’s P.R. Expert (and White House Correspondents’ Association dinner After Party hostess) Judith Czelusniak literally and barely blew into town on the tail of yesterday’s nasty thunderstorm for meetings with the producers of Bloomberg TV’s Money and Politics (which had Barney Frank and the Rob Portman on last night and has previously had Rudy Giuliani, Lamar Alexander, and Hillary Clinton on…but never Mike Bloomberg?!?)

More important, Czelusniak almost missed an uber-vibrant dinner in her honor at the Palm….including usual suspects and friends Mike Allen, Hope and David Bass, Tim Burger, Rebecca Christie, Tucker Carlson, Shridar Pappu, Patrick Gavin, Chris Berry, Edie Emery, Anne Schroeder, Sandra Sobieraj Westfall, Amy Argetsinger, Garrett Graff (it’s his birthday today…we swear the to-be author is still like 22 or something…)John McCaslin, Anne Schroeder and Janet Donovan.

Attendance being high, the Palm’s largest roundtop was expanded throughout the evening with tables ripped from the wall to create the soon to be famous and infinitely expandable “Banjo Formation”.

Sorry we don’t have pictures.
