Sunday Show Notes

• Conflicts between the White House and Fox News remained a topic of discussion on the Sunday shows this weekend. This is after White House communications director Anita Dunn appeared on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” last week and said of Fox, “Let’s not pretend they’re a news network…”

On “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” senior advisor David Axelrod said of Fox News, “It’s not really news. It’s pushing a point of view. The bigger thing is that, other news organizations, like yours, ought not treat them that way… We’re going to appear on their shows, we’re going to participate. But understanding that they represent a point of view.”

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” with John King and said, “While it’s clear what the white house and what Anita said, the concentration of the white house isn’t about what Fox is doing.”

On FOX News Sunday former adviser to President Bush Karl Rove said, “This is a White House engaging in its own version of the media enemies list. And it’s unhelpful for the country and undignified for the president of the United States to so do.” (h/t TVNewser)

And B&C‘s Marisa Guthrie weighed in on Howard Kurtz‘s show on CNN: “Fox News doesn’t thrive on access from the administration. They’re the opposition. They thrive on agitation.”

Related– NYT‘s David Carr: The Battle Between the White House and Fox News and AP’s David Bauder: Picking a fight: Obama vs Fox News.

• That was CBS political analyst John Dickerson filling in for Bob Schieffer on “Face the Nation.”

• In MTP’s “Take Two” on the web, White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, Maria Shriver, John Podesta and David Gregory discuss the impact of Gloria Steinem– this convo ties into NBC’s reporting on “A Women’s Nation.” Shriver also addressed her recent apology for being caught talking on her phone while behind the wheel.

• And does MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow belong on “MTP”? Someone certainly thinks so…

Former First Daughter Becomes “Today” Correspondent

A brunette Jenna Bush Hager will be joining the “Today Show” and working as a correspondent out of NBC’s Washington bureau, the AP reports.

She’ll contribute education stories about once a month and her first piece should air some time in September. Jenna’s 27 now, living in Baltimore and working as a teacher.

“Today” executive producer Jim Bell apparently approached the former first daughter with the idea after a few appearances on the show to promote her book “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope.”

“I think she can handle it,” Bell said in an interview with AP’s David Bauder. “I think she knows something about pressure and being under some scrutiny. When she came here for a handful of appearances, she knocked it out of the park.”

Jenna won’t be covering politics or talking about her experiences in the White House. “I don’t think it’s that interesting,” she said in this AP article. “I’m pretty normal.”

Obama & The Press: A Match Made In Ratings Heaven?

“Obama should change his middle name from Hussein to Nielsen,” said Gail Shister, a writing instructor at the University of Pennsylvania (and TVNewser columnist) to AP’s David Bauder for a piece on President Obama’s relationship with the networks.

Strong public interest in the president and his policies explains why so many people in television, magazines and newspapers want to speak to him, said Mark Whitaker, Washington bureau chief for NBC News.

Jon Banner, veteran executive producer of ABC’s “World News,” said the White House has clearly sought to make Obama more available to networks than recent presidents have been. Obama is personally popular, more so than his policies at this point, and he’s his own best salesman, he said.

And the President delivers with ratings, as Bauder points out:

• Bauder calls NBC’s “Inside the Obama White House” a hit, for a network that’s starved for hits.

• He says two of the three most-watched episodes of “60 Minutes” last TV season were devoted to Obama, topped by the 25.1 million people who watched Steve Kroft conduct the first postelection interview with the president-elect in November.

• And that CBS’ “Face the Nation” had its biggest audience of the year when Obama appeared in March.

• ABC’s prime-time discussion with the president on health care last month did better in its time slot than anything else ABC had put on in six weeks. The “Nightline” that completed the discussion that night beat David Letterman and Conan O’Brien in the ratings.

Related: Politico‘s Michael Calderone writes “Obama coverage pays for networks” and Greg Sargent’s The Plum Line: “The Press Corps Versus The White House, Part Two” on last week’s health care town hall meeting.

What we know and what we’re reading this Wednesday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | ONLINE | MAGAZINES | NEWS NOTES | WEST WING REPORTAGE | JOBS

NEWSPAPERS

WSJ: Gannett Co., the largest U.S. newspaper publisher by daily circulation, will cut between 1,000 and 2,000 jobs out of its 41,500-person work force in response to continuing revenue declines. The cuts will come from the U.S. Community Publishing division, which consists of more than 80 local dailies.

TV

Check out mediabistro’s Laurel Touby on Carlos Watson‘s 11am hour on MSNBC today.

The Pew Research Center reports TV news devoted 28 hours to Michael Jackson coverage and 93% of cable airtime (h/t TVNewser). Early in the week the media gave ongoing attention to protests over the Iranian election. And by the end of the week Iran filled 19% of the newshole, making it the No. 1 topic of the week. By Wednesday attention shifted to the third biggest story of the week – the affair of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. But the passing of the “King of Pop” on Thursday, the #2 story of the week, dominated late week coverage. The TV nets devoted more than 28 hours to Jackson’s life and death. The cable nets devoted 93% of their airtime to Jackson on Thursday and Friday.

Tom Shales‘ in WaPo on why TV critics are needed more than ever: “Sadly, there are people who maintain that TV critics are anachronisms, unnecessary luxuries in a fidgety digital age. Unfortunately, some of those people happen to be newspaper editors. At more than just a handful of papers around the country, the job has simply been abolished.”

ONLINE

TVNewser profiles Aaron Brown and asks about Twitter. He’s doing a PBS series “Wide Angle.” “My students made me open a Twitter account, but I have never Twittered or read a Tweet,” he says. “It’s self-indulgent nonsense. I don’t get it. I’m 60. I’m not sure I’m supposed to get this stuff.”

MAGAZINES

Vibe Magazine is shutting down.

NEWS NOTES

About that Todd Purdum piece on Sarah Palin in VF… Politico: “A hard-hitting piece on Sarah Palin in the new Vanity Fair has touched off a blistering exchange of insults among high-profile Republicans over last year’s GOP ticket — tearing open fresh wounds about leaks surrounding Palin and the internal wars that paralyzed the campaign in its final days.”

And Craig Crawford in CQ: “Now they tell us. John McCain’s staffers are lining up to anonymously trash Sarah Palin and feed a news media assault against the 2008 GOP running mate. These pathetic wimps offer nothing but unattributed quotes to Vanity Fair saying they felt she wasn’t up to snuff and whining that she refused to properly study up on policy issues.”

WEST WING REPORTAGE

AP’s David Bauder writes about the selective coverage of the Obama girls, Sasha and Malia. “Images are great when they can be controlled. And when it comes to the Obama kids, the White House can be very controlling. Sasha and her 10-year-old sister Malia have been shielded carefully from the public, but they are by no means invisible.”

HAT TIPS: mediabistro

Its day 49 covering the Obama administration and week six for us. What we know and what we’re reading this Monday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | RADIO | ONLINE | MAGAZINES | NEWS NOTES | REVOLVING DOOR | JOBS

NEWPAPERS

Jim Bellows died Friday. He was 86 and had Alzheimer’s disease. From AP: ” Jim Bellows, a famed editor who transformed struggling newspapers in Los Angeles, Washington and New York, nurtured the careers of Tom Wolfe and Jimmy Breslin and helped make “Entertainment Tonight” a TV hit, has died… For two decades beginning in the 1960s, Bellows took big-city newspapers that were fighting losing battles against large-budgeted giants and spiced them up with scrappy reporting and columns that often took jabs at their rivals.”

A longtime Rocky Mountain News reporter James Meadow died Sunday after a serious mountain biking accident. Friends and family have started a Facebook group here. Tributes to Meadow can also be found at “I wany my Rocky,” a blog dedicated to the paper.

In other news, a NYT story this weekend reports that the LA Daily News is going to try an experiment this summer wherein readers get to choose their own news. From FishbowlNY: The plan is to let readers customize their own papers with news stories they like and then print them in their own homes (so sort of like a dead tree RSS feed?).

McClatchy will cut 1,600 more jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce, as part of its restructing.

To thoughts on how to save newspapers: from NYT “United, Newspapers May Stand” and from the Christian Science Monitor “Professors could rescue newspapers.”

TV

WaPo’s Marc Fisher says DC is “suddenly hot” in primetime. “But with the election of Barack Obama, the shift of economic power from New York to the District, and the evolution of a voracious celebrity culture to include politicians and even campaign strategists, TV is rediscovering Washington. No longer is the city simply a collection of marble icons to be glommed onto police procedurals and other basic formats of television drama.”

Tell him something good. Mmmhmm. AP’s David Bauder reports NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams has received thousands of responses after asking viewers for some good news on his broadcast.

NYT also reports NBC is considering extending Nightly News to an hour long broadcast.

RADIO

How many people actually listen to Rush Limbaugh? “According to what Limbaugh delights in calling “the drive-by media,” the number varies wildly. Is it 30 million (Pat Buchanan on MSNBC), 20 million (Time magazine, ABC News), 19 million (Fox News), 14 million (CNN), or “14.2 million to about 25 million” (The Washington Post)?” Answer from WaPo’s Paul Farhi, maybe. Read more here.

In other Limbaugh news, HuffPost points out on his show Friday, he suggested Sen. Ted Kennedy would not see the health care reform legislaton pass. “Before it’s all over, it’ll be called the Ted Kennedy memorial health care bill,” they report Limbaugh said.

ONLINE

President Obama revealed to the NYT in last week’s interview that he doesn’t read FishbowlDC, or more specifically, blogs. From the transcript: Q: “No blogs?” “I rarely read blogs.” More on President Obama’s NYT interview on FBDC later today.

Just when everyone’s moved on to hating Twitter, The Weekly Standard’s Matt Labash wants to remind us, he still hates Facebook, calling the networking site, “dull– mind-numbingly dull.”

Check out 2008′s best and worst selling magazine issues (spoiler, President Obama is on the cover of a lot of the best selling ones.)

Its day 46 covering the Obama administration and one month down for us. What we know and what we’re reading this Friday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | RADIO | NEWS NOTES | JOBS

NEWPAPERS

Rep. Frank Wolf called for a NYT reporter at a hearing on the Hill yesterday to explain why with everything going on, they ran a story on President Obama’s graying hair on page 1. From Washington Whispers, “‘The New York Times has a front-page story today on the fact that Barack Obama’s hair is turning gray, and the chairman is having a great hearing with great witnesses and they have never even covered this,’ Republican Wolf barked. ‘Do we wonder why our factories are empty and we’re in a period of decay on this issue? I think the media, quite frankly, whoever is with the New York Times, you just aren’t doing your job.’”

From the Denver Post, “‘Individuated’ news tested,” in a MediaNews Group trial run, readers will pick the daily information sent to them. They call it the “newspaper of the not-too-distant future.”

TV

From the AP’s David Bauder, “Obama administration goes after cable chatter.”

In the same week we learned MSNBC’s Chris Matthews doesn’t know who D.L. Hughley is, CNN cancels the show. TVNewser reports first the show will end its run at the end of this month and the decision was Hughley’s.

RADIO

More on Rush Limbaugh vs. Team Obama in Howard Kurtz’ Media Notes today, “Healthy Debate.”

Gross will handle the 8:30 morning report, the 15-minute midday report, and the Saturday midday show. Limerick will do the afternoon report and Saturday morning edition. Harvey’s show airs locally on WMAL.”

The Daily Beast asks, “Is the New Republic a Toxic Asset?”

The owner The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News has filed for bankruptcy. AP reports that an email to staffers says “the company is still in business, the papers are still publishing” and that members should report to work. Philadelphia Newspapers Inc. joins the ranks of the Journal Register Co., Chicago’s Tribune Co. and the Star Tribune of Minneapolis, all who have filed for Chapter 11.

Cartoonist treading lightly when drawing Obama… “Editorial cartoonists are bending over backwards a lot these days, as they try to satirize the nation’s first black president. And when they don’t, the result is the kind of outcry that erupted this week after a New York Post cartoon featured a bloody chimpanzee- intentionally or unintentionally evoking racist images of the past.”
