On “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” senior advisor David Axelrod said of Fox News, “It’s not really news. It’s pushing a point of view. The bigger thing is that, other news organizations, like yours, ought not treat them that way… We’re going to appear on their shows, we’re going to participate. But understanding that they represent a point of view.”

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” with John King and said, “While it’s clear what the white house and what Anita said, the concentration of the white house isn’t about what Fox is doing.”

On FOX News Sunday former adviser to President Bush Karl Rove said, “This is a White House engaging in its own version of the media enemies list. And it’s unhelpful for the country and undignified for the president of the United States to so do.” (h/t TVNewser)

And B&C‘s Marisa Guthrie weighed in on Howard Kurtz‘s show on CNN: “Fox News doesn’t thrive on access from the administration. They’re the opposition. They thrive on agitation.”

A brunette Jenna Bush Hager will be joining the “Today Show” and working as a correspondent out of NBC’s Washington bureau, the AP reports.

She’ll contribute education stories about once a month and her first piece should air some time in September. Jenna’s 27 now, living in Baltimore and working as a teacher.

“Today” executive producer Jim Bell apparently approached the former first daughter with the idea after a few appearances on the show to promote her book “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope.”

“I think she can handle it,” Bell said in an interview with AP’s David Bauder. “I think she knows something about pressure and being under some scrutiny. When she came here for a handful of appearances, she knocked it out of the park.”

Jenna won’t be covering politics or talking about her experiences in the White House. “I don’t think it’s that interesting,” she said in this AP article. “I’m pretty normal.”

Strong public interest in the president and his policies explains why so many people in television, magazines and newspapers want to speak to him, said Mark Whitaker, Washington bureau chief for NBC News.

Jon Banner, veteran executive producer of ABC’s “World News,” said the White House has clearly sought to make Obama more available to networks than recent presidents have been. Obama is personally popular, more so than his policies at this point, and he’s his own best salesman, he said.

And the President delivers with ratings, as Bauder points out:

• Bauder calls NBC’s “Inside the Obama White House” a hit, for a network that’s starved for hits.

• He says two of the three most-watched episodes of “60 Minutes” last TV season were devoted to Obama, topped by the 25.1 million people who watched Steve Kroft conduct the first postelection interview with the president-elect in November.

• And that CBS’ “Face the Nation” had its biggest audience of the year when Obama appeared in March.

• ABC’s prime-time discussion with the president on health care last month did better in its time slot than anything else ABC had put on in six weeks. The “Nightline” that completed the discussion that night beat David Letterman and Conan O’Brien in the ratings.

By Wednesday attention shifted to the third biggest story of the week – the affair of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. But the passing of the “King of Pop” on Thursday, the #2 story of the week, dominated late week coverage. The TV nets devoted more than 28 hours to Jackson’s life and death. The cable nets devoted 93% of their airtime to Jackson on Thursday and Friday.

Tom Shales‘ in WaPo on why TV critics are needed more than ever: “Sadly, there are people who maintain that TV critics are anachronisms, unnecessary luxuries in a fidgety digital age. Unfortunately, some of those people happen to be newspaper editors. At more than just a handful of papers around the country, the job has simply been abolished.”

From WaPo’s Howard Kurtz: The New York Times Co. said last night that it is notifying federal authorities of its plans to shut down the Boston Globe. After down-to-the-wire negotiations did not produce millions of dollars in union concessions, the Times Co. said that it will file a required 60-day notice of the planned shutdown. Read on here.

NYT: The Globe‘s union put out a statement saying it had made a proposal that exceeded management’s demands.

WSJ checks in with Warren Buffet on the future of the newspaper business. “For most newspapers in the United states, we would not buy them at any price,” he said in response to a question about whether he would consider investing in newspapers. “They have the possibility of going to just unending losses.”

Jim Bellows died Friday. He was 86 and had Alzheimer’s disease. From AP: ” Jim Bellows, a famed editor who transformed struggling newspapers in Los Angeles, Washington and New York, nurtured the careers of Tom Wolfe and Jimmy Breslin and helped make “Entertainment Tonight” a TV hit, has died… For two decades beginning in the 1960s, Bellows took big-city newspapers that were fighting losing battles against large-budgeted giants and spiced them up with scrappy reporting and columns that often took jabs at their rivals.”

A longtime Rocky Mountain News reporter James Meadow died Sunday after a serious mountain biking accident. Friends and family have started a Facebook group here. Tributes to Meadow can also be found at “I wany my Rocky,” a blog dedicated to the paper.

In other news, a NYT story this weekend reports that the LA Daily News is going to try an experiment this summer wherein readers get to choose their own news. From FishbowlNY: The plan is to let readers customize their own papers with news stories they like and then print them in their own homes (so sort of like a dead tree RSS feed?).

McClatchy will cut 1,600 more jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce, as part of its restructing.

WaPo’s Marc Fisher says DC is “suddenly hot” in primetime. “But with the election of Barack Obama, the shift of economic power from New York to the District, and the evolution of a voracious celebrity culture to include politicians and even campaign strategists, TV is rediscovering Washington. No longer is the city simply a collection of marble icons to be glommed onto police procedurals and other basic formats of television drama.”
