Tavis Swims in the Fishbowl Daily (So he Says…)

LA-based talk show host Tavis Smiley comes to D.C. next week to moderate a “multicultural, multi-ethnic, multi-ideological” panel next Thursday at GW’s Lisner Auditorium. The panel is set to include opinion-makers such as Cornel West, Arianna Huffington, Maria Bartiromo, David Frum, Dana Milbank, David Brody, and Maria Teresa Kumar.

“We’re going to talk about how this country can get back on the right track, if that’s possible,” Smiley told FishbowlDC in a phone interview on Thursday morning. (Horribly, I completely spaced our Wednesday interview and he agreed to chat with me Thursday. When I answered the phone and apologized profusely, he said, “I’m just happy when you answer the phone. Turns me on.” Laughter ensued. A well-deserved crack for standing him up.)

Anyway, back to the interview and getting the country back on track. “There is so much happening in Washington in our body politic,” he’s saying. Asked if he thinks our country can get on a better path, he said, “I think America’s a great country, but I think we have to be on the right track on this divided government that we have to endure. I think the president squandered some time. He could have been more aggressive in the past two years.”

Smiley’s media diet in Washington includes a brief buttering up of our sister site, FishbowlLA, and FishbowlDC: “Oh man, I read most everything online. I live in LA. I’m swimming in the Fishbowl every day, every other day.” When in Washington, Smiley prefers boutique hotels like the Hotel George. But this time he’s staying at the host hotel, the Madison Loews. As for eating, he says he always ends up at Georgia Browns and Ben’s Chili Bowl.

What else can we expect to hear from Smiley next week and what are his thoughts on the media? As he put it…

Hume Fallout Hopefully Coming to Standstill

Please God, unless Fox News’s Brit Hume apologizes, meets with His Holiness the Dalai Lama or takes up Buddhism, let this story die already.

Although discussion seems to be down to a trickle, over the weekend we were subjected to more doses of the Hume religion saga. WaPo’s Howard Kurtz, host of CNN’s “Reliable Sources”, discussed Hume’s unsolicited advice for Tiger Woods and Politics Daily’s Carl Cannon wrote a piece on it.

Kurtz’s interviews included new faces to opine on Hume’s unsolicited advice, such as David Brody, White House correspondent for the Christian Broadcasting Network. Cannon’s piece was, like Kurtz’s segment, more of the same until you get to his personal observations of Hume, which are well worth reading and include more details around Hume’s interactions with former President Clinton in the Rose Garden and Hume’s religious transformation after his son, Sandy, committed suicide in 1998.

Here’s a sample:

Once, because the men’s rooms in the White House briefing room were occupied and Brit was preparing for a broadcast, I saw him putting on makeup by using the glass reflection on a vending machine. He looked back at me and shrugged, and said with a grin, “Helluva way for a grown man to make a living, isn’t it?”

Read Cannon’s story.

Watch Kurtz’s report.

Brody Off To The White House

From Christian Broadcasting Network David Brody‘s blog:

Don’t worry. I’m not really moving. The Brody file continues. It’s just that I’ll be spending more time at The White House.

Starting with the Obama administration, I will be the new White House Correspondent for CBN News. I’ll still be a CNN Contributor.

Please remember that the Brody File is alive and well from The White House. I’ll still be bringing you newsmakers through my blog. Not only will we have the movers and shakers from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue coming your way but look for interviews with top newsmakers from Capitol Hill, the faith community, the power brokers of Washington DC and yes, the potential 2012 Republican candidates for President! Basically, if you’re looking for exclusive political news, The Brody File is it.

Why Palin Won’t Do More Interviews: “Sometimes it just doesn’t do any good.”

Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody recently sat down with Gov. Sarah Palin and asked her: “Why you don’t go on some of the 24/7 cable networks?”

Palin:

Well sometimes it just doesn’t do any good. I mean you set yourself up just to continually be mocked, you know so sometimes that doesn’t do any good, but what I have done in this campaign is in reaching out to the American voters through our rallies, through the one on ones, through the small meetings that we’ve had trying to get our message out, our plans for this country out there minus the filter of some of the filter of the mainstream media because, because that filter as, as we see every day when we turn on the news too often there is this, this opaqueness, there is this, this spin, this contortion of a person’s words and intentions and that does more harm than good, so it’s a greater challenge for me and for John McCain to try to get our message out there without that filter of I think some of the world’s media. It’s a greater challenge, but again, it does make us work harder and try to reach more people. That’s why we’re traveling around so hard and fast and aggressively across the US is to reach more people.

Brody Time

The LA Times profiles CBN’s David Brody (see his FishbowlDC interview here):

By turning his blog into a sounding board for presidential candidates — testing their appeal to the much sought-after evangelical voter — Brody has turned CBN into an unlikely go-to source for political junkies, routinely cited by the mainstream media. In a breezy style with a dash of irreverence, he embraces some liberals and takes aim at some conservatives. That surprises people, and keeps them coming back; his blog, the Brody File,– http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/blogs/brodyfile/ — draws about 25,000 page views a month, triple last fall’s numbers.

Hotline Interviews Brody

From Hotline’s “Friday Feature”:

David Brody is senior nat’l corr. for CBN News. He also writes the “Brody Files.” Before his CBN News gig, he worked for stations in Colorado Springs, Denver and DC. But today he’s our Friday Feature:

…

What was your first job?

I worked at Sedutto’Ice Cream Parlor when I was 14. My wrist hurt after a week and I knew I was more a white collar type guy.

What’s your most embarrassing on-the-job moment? (Or as embarrassing as you’d like to reveal?)

I was a radio DJ in Colorado Springs. I was working the Saturday afternoon shift and I put on American Pie by Don McLean and ran to my car to get something. You know, 8 minute song. Well, the radio station door locked behind me. I was locked up for an hour until the General Manager came from home to let me in.

…

What is your biggest weakness (and not your job interview biggest weakness)?

I love food. If I’m happy I eat. If I’m sad, I eat. I simply like to eat.

…

And finally, we’re ending this feature with a question posed by the last interviewee. This is from PBS’ Jeffrey Brown: Who are your favorite and least favorite fictional reporters and why?

Ron Burgundy from the movie “Anchorman” would have to be my least favorite because he was so overtly sexist. There’s no place for that in our business. (though I’ve seen plenty) Clark Kent has to be my favorite. He has a strong moral compass and at the same time was able to save the world. Where does he find the time and get the energy for all of that?
