RAINING IN THE ROSE GARDEN: “Overheard: ‘Melt the Press.’ @MarkLandler of NYT pops out a Georgetown umbrella.” — NPR White House Correspondent Ari Shapiro with the accompanying photograph. And NBC’s Luke Russert: “The #Marines holding the umbrellas at this presser are unbelievably cool, had no idea there’s military protocol for umbrella holding.”

And later, after Fitz sees a video in which Olivia, his mistress, has sex with another man, she writes, “OK Fitz. She is not a virgin nor your wife and she didn’t know that guy was charged w/ bedding/protecting her. STOP BEING A CHILD.”

Kurtz Commended For Facing Fire

Howard Kurtz‘s apology, delivered on live national television Sunday, has been received as any dramatic apology would be. Some people are buying it. Some aren’t.

On his CNN media news program “Reliable Sources,” Kurtz offered his side of the story on what led to the mea culpa in the first place: Deadline pressure and his own lack of due diligence were to blame for his erroneous report last week that NBA player Jason Collins, who had just come out as gay, didn’t disclose that Collins his prior engagement to a woman. Collins had, in fact, been open about the engagement, mentioning it in a column for Sports Illustrated.

On Friday we questioned whether Kurtz would cover his own ass by covering his own ass on the show. He did. And for the occasion, CNN brought in NPR’s David Folkenflik and Politico‘s Dylan Byers to probe him.

There was plenty of in-house love for Kurtz. In a separate segment on the show, attorney Lisa Bloom was on to discuss coverage of the Jodi Arias case. Before offering her legal analysis, she said she would take a second to “go off script.” She praised Kurtz for “raising the bar” for journalistic accountability (while rattling off her own media resume).

“Kudos to Howard Kurtz,” tweeted Kurtz’s CNN colleague Piers Morgan. “He took his Jason Collins-clanger on the chin today like a Mike Tyson right hook.”

The compliments also poured in from elsewhere. FNC anchor Greta Van Susteren wrote on her Gretawire blog that everyone should “stop slapping Howie Kurtz.”

“Not one of us is perfect. We all make mistakes,” Van Susteren wrote. At the start of the year, Kurtz had to offer a separate apology for wrongly attributing a quote to Van Susteren about then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

At TVNewser, our sister site, Gail Shister wrote after the apology that she hopes CNN head Jeff Zucker will continue to support Kurtz.

On the other side of the fence… continued…

Nancy Pelosi Helps TNR Celebrate New Digs

Three weeks after moving into 529 9th St. in Chinatown, The New Republic officially celebrated its new office space on Friday.

“The convenience of the location played a big part,” Chief Operating Officer Sloan Eddleston told FishbowlDC. The office, which sits over the International Spy Museum, features a newsroom with some 30 computers, a library for reporters seeking a quiet respite and a spacious roof deck with a view of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery (another selling point).

Eddleston said the space was renovated before the TNR crew could move in and that changes to the office were paid for by the owners of the building. He said TNR has signed a multi-year lease, but declined to say how many years.

Notably, most of the computers in the office are desktop PCs with only two or three Macs. Asked if any of the staffers gripe over who uses which computer, TNR Editor-in-Chief Franklin Foer said no. Actually, most of the computers go unused. “I think you find that most people have laptops,” Foer said, “and they’re working off Macs.”

Foer said it’s “very sweet to be in a place that is our home and will be our home for a long time.” Previously, TNR was taking up shelter in an office sublet by the American Grain Council.

The party featured two fully-stocked open bars and another bar where attendees could sample different liquors. WaPo‘s media reporter Erik Wemple was spotted taking a shot of something dark before heading out onto the deck. Catering included copious amounts of humus and cheese, veggie spreads and an assortment of chips.

Throughout the early evening, Chris Hughes, publisher of TNR, was seen… continued…

A concerted effort to expand your horizons and foster positive familial relations by bringing you highlights from the company’s other Fishbowls and other blogs.

FishbowlNY: Happy Birthday to NYT media scribe David Carr‘s twin daughters who turn 25 today. The site resurrects a raw essay by Carr from 2008 in which he candidly discusses the girls and his former drug addiction.

FishbowlLA: Ian Zering and the Chippendales? FishbowlLA brings us this dollop of joy about the former “Beverly Hills: 90210″ star who this summer will host the “Chippendales Revue” in Vegas. Let’s hope he’s not fat for it, as TMZ recently charged. Read here.

TVNewser: Is there enough coverage of Kermit the abortion provider? We’re not sure, but there appears to be enough coverage of the lack of coverage on Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Nonetheless, our sister site brings us the news that FNC host Kimberly Guilfoyle will be in the courtroom this afternoon and will report back to “The Five.” Kermit the frog can’t be happy about any of this.

Did the White House Threaten Bob Woodward or is He Full of It?

It’s Fish Poll time.

When WaPo‘s Bob Woodward, a guy who has figured out how to bring out the toddler in Democrats and Republicans, claimed on Wednesday that he was threatened by the White House, a media debate started over what exactly constitutes a “threat.”

After Woodward said this week that it was the Obama administration which came up with the sequester idea, a White House official (Gene Sperling, Director of the White House Economic Council) emailed Woodward to say he’d “regret staking out that claim.”

In a subsequent interview with Politico, Woodward maintained that it was indeed a threat. “Come on,” he said. “I think if Obama himself saw the way they’re dealing with some of this, he would say, ‘Whoa, we don’t tell any reporter ‘you’re going to regret challenging us.’”

Some sided with Woodward. Others said the “regret” line was nothing, similar to telling someone he’d be proven wrong in time… continued…

CNN’s Blitzer, O’Brien Make Cameos in Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’

Though he participated in a well-documented Twitter fight back in 2009 with TWT‘s Emily Miller, it appears actor Kevin Spacey has forgotten who she is.

“I don’t know she is,” he said when asked if we could send Miller his regards at the red carpet premier of Netflix’s “House of Cards” last night at the Newseum. FishbowlDC explained that Miller tipped off the FBI about details surrounding the Jack Abramoff scandal, as portrayed in the film “Casino Jack,” starring Spacey himself. “Oh,” Spacey said, sort of recalling who Miller is. “Hi! Sure. I don’t know what you’re asking me,” he said. Then his handlers moved him along.

“House of Cards” tells the story of Francis Underwood, played by Spacey, a congressional Democrat who wheels and deals his way to the top of the political world. Michael Dobbs, the creator, told FishbowlDC that he wrote the story “as a form of therapy” after having worked as the chief of staff to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the late ’80s.

The Washington news corps. plays a heavy, fictional role in the show, which is based on the original 1990s BBC series of the same name. James Foley, one of the show’s directors, said while working on story lines he’d ask himself whether it would be believable if he saw it reported on CNN. If not, he’d ask the lead writer for adjustments to the script. He also said actual on-air talent from CNN make cameos in the show, including… continued…

He’s giving Kalb the same lines he gave me in our interview in October. For that matter, they’re all saying a lot of the same things they told me in October.” — Politico‘s Dylan Byers at an event with presidential debate moderators put on by Marvin Kalb and the George Washington Global Media Institute.
Oprah’s masterful interview skills

“Oprah rules. She is REALLY good at this. Just a master interviewer.” — WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza. Also: “Lance is the least sympathetic apologizer possible. I feel ZERO empathy with him.”

“Oprah is a hell of a good interviewer.”– CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin.

“This is as much am exercise in journalism as confession. The packages Oprahs guys are dropping in help people who are new to the story.” — NYT‘s David Carr.

“I’m not feeling Lance but I’m loving Oprah. She is a first class interviewer.” — Washingtonian Publisher Cathy Merrill Williams.

“Oprah tells crowd to look under their chairs where they discover rotten vegetables to throw at Lance. That interview I would watch.” — Reuters‘ Sam Youngman.

“Every asshole should get to do an interview with Oprah.” — New York Daily News‘ Josh Greenman.

“Mike Wallace would have filleted Lance Armstrong like a fish.” — Politico‘s Roger Simon.

(Fake Oprah Question): “Did you ever have sex with a dead wizard’s body for magical powers?” “Yes” — The Guardian and Salon freelancer Jim Newell during the “yes or no” only portion of the interview.

“I read his book, I supported LiveStrong- so awful to watch him tonight – he seems mostly sorry he got caught!” — NBC4′s Doreen Gentzler.

“So Lance’s drug use was real and Manti’s gf was fake. Got it.” — USA Today’s Jackie Kucinich.

“If I’ve learned anything from this Lance Armstrong interview, it’s he’s a high school girl. Stab you in the back without breaking a sweat.” — Social Media Editor for NBC Washington Cheryl Thompson.

“If Lance Armstrong cared about ratings, he would have done interview on 60 Min. Not a cable network nobody watches.” — Alex Conant, U.S. GOP Sen. Marco Rubio‘s press secretary.

“You did not just make a fat joke to Oprah.” — Lizzie O’Leary, whose Twitter bio says simply, “apsiring Hildy Johnson.”

“Fun continuity game: watch water levels in Lance & Oprah water glasses for edit jumping. Straws are an odd touch, too.” — Politico‘s Steve Friess.

National Journal Editor-in-Chief turned National Reporter Ron Fournier (or should we blame CNN’s Howie Kurtz for this?) got us all choked up this weekend (or rather, choked us) with Fournier’s vanity piece on his son’s Asperger’s syndrome and the access Fournier got to two ex-U.S. Presidents. On CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” Fournier explained that his editor, who sometimes plays psychiatrist, urged him to write the piece. Good news: Fournier paves the way for journalists to use their personal experiences and guilt to ramp up their careers. And isn’t this cathartic for all of us? Noted a Washington editor to FBDC, “Fournier’s behavior would qualify as just the usual vanity of journalists if this weren’t about his son. But it is. Which makes it unseemly bordering on obscene.” Bad news: We have to keep hearing about it. “Watching more CNN than I ever have waiting for @ron_fournier#lovethatboy” — wrote a fan named Abby4nier (i.e. his daughter). To which Fournier replied, “Making good choice.”

From Ron and Sara Bonjean’s Xmas party… “Dom DeLuise does not know Ron Bonjean raided his closet.” — Public Relations Consultant and ex-TWT Editor Sam Dealey. More on the party and Bonjean’s flower bombed purple blazer later and we’re talking about Ron, not Sara…

Unnecessary Tweet of the Day

“Video storytelling, when executed well, can be very emotionally compelling.” — NBC Washington cameraman Jim Long. Indeed, such sage advice.

Scribes Scrap Q From Ryan’s ‘Media Bias’ Comment

Following GOP V.P. candidate Paul Ryan‘s interview on Fox News Sunday this weekend, several write-ups honed in on a quote wherein Ryan says “there is definitely media bias.” Some members of the media oddly saw this as Ryan “complaining” and failed to explain that he was actually responding to a question by Fox News Sunday’s Chris Wallace.

Among the outlets that failed to include the question portion leading to Ryan’s comment: Politico, NYT and CNN.com.

“Paul Ryan breaks ‘no whining rule,’” blared the headline in a post by Politico‘s Dylan Byers. He noted that last week a senior adviser to the Romney campaign said there was a “no whining rule” regarding campaign news coverage. “Ryan upended all that in an interview this morning with Fox News Sunday,” he wrote. There was no mention that Wallace had asked Ryan a question: “Do you think the mainstream media is carrying water for Barack Obama?” Byers later updated his post with an email from a Ryan spokesman who said, “[Ryan] was asked a question about media bias and answered it.”

NYT‘s Brian Knowlton wrote that Ryan was “complaining” about media bias. “[Ryan] suggested on Sunday that part of the [Romney campaign's] problem might be in getting the message past the mainstream news media,” he wrote, also omitting Wallace’s question from the equation. Knowlton also asserted that Ryan’s comments were out of sync with others in the GOP.

“One fellow Republican said on Sunday that complaining of media bias was not, perhaps, the most effective response,” Knowlton wrote, citing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie‘s Sunday appearance on ABC’s This Week. On the program, Christie said he wouldn’t “complain” about the news coverage of the Romney campaign. Unlike Ryan, Christie wasn’t asked to analyze the biases of the news media. He offered.

NYT’s David Carr Sees Child Abuse in D.C.

NYT media writer David Carr comes to Washington for the weekend and what does he get? Child abuse in the Hotel Rouge elevator. (Pictured at left: Back of Carr’s scarved head, Stelter, etc…)

Ah yes, charming to ride elevator this AM w/family heading out to tour Washington. ‘Cept part abt mom slapping 8yrold boy in face. Witch

— david carr (@carr2n) April 29, 2012

@mdomb told mom hitting kid in public strange way to teach manners. She said nothing but looked like she wanted to slap me too.

— david carr (@carr2n) April 29, 2012

The hotel was nice enough, though Carr had at least one snide remark. He wrote on Twitter, “Love DC’s Hotel Rouge, but @kimpton taking eco-friendly to max. No one made up room yesterday.”

The child abuse incident wasn’t necessarily a fair representation of Washington, but it is what it is. Carr was spotted at the Haddad/Rosen garden brunch yesterday afternoon in Georgetown in a huddle of NYT reporters like Brian Stelter. Many a guest was buzzing about his appearance at the infamous soiree.

Overheard: “Aren’t you SOMEONE? Because you look like someone.” — a common refrain all weekend long from journos and politicos trying to figure out the identities of wonks and D-listers attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and its surrounding parties.

Diary of ‘Skanky’ News Ethics

Over the past four days, a story I wrote about female scribes and what I deemed their “provocative” and “sexpot” Twitter avatars has made the rounds in different publications on the web. I published the story Thursday and, much to my surprise, it went viral in a way I had not experienced before. It took on a hateful life of its own and not one entirely based in reality.

The headline that made the feminists and others go wild: “Female Campaign Reporters Go for Sexpot Look.” After it published, I was called a number of colorful terms: Slut, Skank, “loose in the bedroom.” Contrary to those strangers who labeled me slutty, I was also told I needed to “get laid.” And then I was told to “watch my ass.” NYT‘s media guru David Carr remarked on Twitter, “Apparently, @fishbowlDC has lost every marble she ever had and started a dreamy wonk throwdown.” I only wish I could seek psychotherapy from Carr — and borrow some of his marbles. But this is par for the course these days in the world of online journalism. I do not think my story was earth shattering, nor did it break any actual news. But it introduced a subject matter that hit an unexpected nerve.

As the name-calling hit a fever pitch Thursday afternoon, the only journalist who sought an actual quote from me was Matt Wells of The Guardian. The outlet published a story the following day. Later, others sought me out — an old boss in California who I’d worked with in Florida wrote, “Shades of Boca. Go get ‘em!” And friends who worried about all the nastiness they were reading on Twitter reached out to say hello. One, a female reporter friend in New York, texted to say, “Sheesh, people get way way too worked up about these things. They all need to relax. By tomorrow people will have a whole other thing to fixate on. Sending good thoughts your way – can’t be easy dealing with how toxic people are.” Meanwhile, a reporter friend in Kiev, wrote in to say, “Now in Kiev, where they desperately need a Fishbowl. Lots of sex, lies, videotape, etc.” A longtime source Jason Roe, a GOP campaign consultant now based in San Diego, wrote an email with the subject line: “I don’t hate you.” I laughed. I’m no victim here, but it’s hard not to feel touched by those who check in during the storm. He also wrote, “It does go to show how thin-skinned DC people are. There is never a single day that I miss being there. And now, I’m going to have an afternoon beer at a beachside dive bar.”

On Friday, 78,989 page views later, the hate continued. Feminists called me a “horrible writer” and a “horrible person.” They said I had “viciously attacked” women for simply having photos. They LOLed their way through the day by personally insulting me. BuzzFeed Editor Ben Smith threw himself to the wolves (we’re not close but have always had a respectful rapport) by writing on Twitter, “In sincere defense of @FishbowlDC: It’s nice to have a DC journo or two who doesn’t care what her peers think of her.” The public stoning participants went wild. “Oh fuck you dude,” one wrote to Smith. A feminist wrote simply, “Huh?” and proceeded to shriek at Smith for being wrong.

One reporter who continues to be enthralled by the story is Hunter Walker, a political reporter for The New York Observer, who published a 2000-word piece on the matter on Friday night and another update yesterday. I’ve never met him, but Hunter previously worked at Gawker as well as mediabistro’s FishbowlNY. From the start, he took a leading role in the procession of predominately New York-based reporters and feminists who somehow felt violated by my piece. On Friday he wrote that the Internet felt naked without an apology from me. But it was Hunter who actually depicted himself as naked. He began a series of tweets criticizing my story and even corralled a group of male reporters who began calling themselves “PressDudesGoneWild.” Hunter changed his Twitter avatar, he told me, by searching for “sexy 80s men” and photoshopped his face onto Tom Selleck‘s body. Catchy, I thought. And funny.

Until Hunter’s journalistic tactics became not quite so funny.

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY — Holiday Weekend Edition

CNN Senior Political Editor Mark Preston: “Just watched 13 and counting fishing boats leave #Hatteras aboard ferry from #Ocracoke.”

Liquid weekend

“Margarita. Sun. Water. Stir. Serve.”– LAT and Chicago Tribune writer James Oliphant in a weekend tweet.

The judge has spoken: Nir Rosen

“How sad to call yourself a journalist and cover a royal wedding.” — Lefty journo Nir Rosen in a weekend tweet. This stellar critique coming from a man who, back in February, promised to get off Twitter after he made admittedly tasteless remarks about CBS’s Lara Logan being sexually assaulted in Egypt. Among other things he wrote, “It would have been funny if it happened to Anderson [Cooper] too.” How soon Rosen forgets saying, “I feel like shrinking now.” What’s he have against royal wedding coverage?

Ezra marvels at Britney’s career trajectory

“Sort of amazed that Britney Spears is still around and making hits. Has anyone done a great ‘Britney Spears: Survivor’ profile?” — WaPo‘s liberal blogger Ezra Klein in a weekend tweet. He then links to an article by the esteemed TV host Carson Daly, who cries about how sad he is that Britney is “crawling back into the womb” of the record industry. Daly’s show, “Last Call,” airs at 1:35 a.m. ET. First Ez expresses that he loves “Ice Loves Coco,” now this. Whatever metamorphosis is happening, we’re just relieved Klein has expanded his reading repertoire from CJR.

Journo has Metro rage

“Hate the DC Metro and I hate it so much I want to strangle it with my bare hands and destroy its evilness. #metrorage #primalscream.” — Roll Call‘s HOH writer Neda Semnani in a weekend tweet.

It was a long and stormy morning…

“#Boom, thought it was an earthquake in DC … Turned on TV …. Not yet? Just thunder/lightning … Ok. Back to bed.” — Human Events‘ Tony Lee in a weekend tweet.

“Was sleeping soundly until this Wrath of God weather came along & woke me. Yes, I think we need the rain, but at 5:45am on Sunday?!?” — C-SPAN’s Jeremy Art in a weekend tweet.

“Either they’re rehearsing the Fourth of July show on the Mall right now, or our independence is nearly over. #Invasion #Explosives” — WCP‘s Mike Madden in a weekend tweet.

Reporter has new pet peeve

“New airline annoyance: people who play computer solitaire with you over your shoulder.” — WaPo‘s Karen Tumulty in a weekend tweet.

Reporter declares nation sexy

“Happy Birthday America. You are still very sexy for a 235 year old.” — TWT‘s Eli Lake in a 4th of July tweet.

Sweating with Roland

“The thing I hate about the end of the Essence Music Fest is packing wet linen. I partied/sweated hard! #emf2011″ — Washington Watch Host Roland Martin in a weekend tweet.

Inskeep gets down with Prince

“Riding taxi through dark while radio plays ‘Kiss’ by Prince makes you feel you’re in a movie w/soundtrack.” — NPR’s Steve Inskeep in a Tuesday morning tweet.

Rough weekend

“Long weekend+3 power outages=kids bouncing off walls.” — NBC’s Chuck Todd in a weekend tweet.

The Observer

“After watching the “Page One” doc, here’s what I noticed: David Carr – a NY Times reporter – wore a Washington City Paper hat. #wemajor” — WCP Music Critic Marcus Moore in a weekend tweet.

The Critic

“You know it’s a bad day for news when half of @mikeallen‘s Playbook is Jon Huntsman news.” — Mediaite‘s Frances Martel in a weekend tweet.

Strange coincidence?

“Well, that was a first. Woman behind the desk at my gym: ”Pethokoukis?’ Is that an Indian name?’ Namaste!” — Reuters’ Politics and Policy writer Jim Pethokoukis in a weekend tweet. He goes on to say, “Also weird: yesterday I went to an Indian restaurant for the first time in my life.” Pethokoukis is Greek.
