Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day

Rome unveils a new Pope

“CNBC seems unprepared for #pope coverage. They don’t have anyone translating what he’s saying.” — WSJ‘s Victoria McGrane.

“Remember when we were all watching the chimney and waiting for the reveal of the new pope? #nostaliga” — Politico‘s David Chalian.

“So, another Pope who thinks contraceptives are evil. Good luck with that.” — Blogger and pundit Craig Crawford.

“How did the Pope name himself so fast? Do all cardinals have a papal name short list ready?” — TNR‘s Julia Ioffe.

“The House Science subcommittee hearing on energy subsidies has now been delayed for 45 minutes. I blame the Vatican.” — SNL Energy power and policy reporter Corbin Hiar.

“For the record, I yelled ‘POPE SMOKE’ in my newsroom < 1 minute before we saw the smoke. So, yeah, I’ve got some powers. – NJ‘s Elahe Izadi.

“With the pope jokes winding down, Twitter will return to its bread and butter of poop jokes.” Yahoo! Sports Big League Stew Contributor Dave Brown.

Steak: It’s what’s for dinner at midnight

“It’s absolutely silly to grill steaks at midnight, said no smart person ever.” — The Daily Caller‘s soon to be Daily Mail‘s David Martosko. (Except maybe a cardiologist?)

Reporter hopes Kissinger yells at her

“So, last time I spoke to Henry Kissinger he yelled at me. Fingers crossed tonight will be two for two #dreams.” — Roll Call‘s Neda Semnani who had an encounter with him at the Nixon Centennial a few months back.

The Atlantic‘s Molly Ball: “I hope everyone appreciates the greatness of @sarahlyall. Everything she writes is fantastic.”

NYT‘s London-based correspondent Sarah Lyall: “What an extremely nice thing to say! Thank you.”

Quote Taken Way Out of Context

“Everything is terrible.” — BuzzFeed‘s Rebecca Berg.

Ask Ms. Politico: ‘Smith is a Jerk, Jones is Toast’

Ever since we got our hands on Politico‘s hot new ethics manual, we’ve been staying up late at night memorizing the lines. Here’s one we like…”If you find yourself heading into a problem area, it is a lot easier to ask for guidance in advance than to scrape off your shoe after stepping in it.” In what, dog shit?

We like to keep manual under our pillows, hoping the wisdom will seep in by osmosis. Today we continue with our advice column, Ask Ms. Politico, in which we ask the knowledgeable woman a question and she answers us directly from the ethics manual. While the questions are the ones we invent, her answers are real. To see past questions and answers, see here and here. We’re working our way through this as slow as we possibly can. Or as NBC’s Luke Russert might say, we’re “slow-walking” our way through it. We like to take our time with national treasures.

Q: Hi there Missy. I seem to have a terrible problem with popping off. I have opinions and sometimes it’s hard to keep my big fat mouth shut. Also, I have these horrible friends, Smith and Jones. They are both jerks. But Jones in particular is a real nobody. What should I do?

See Ms. Politico’s response…

Media Expert Publishes ‘Bible’

Asked if Paula Broadwell or Jill Kelley could benefit from reading his new book, Brad Phillips said yes, sort of. “There’s an entire section about managing a media crisis,” he told FishbowlDC. But he said he had broader things in mind as opposed to just sex scandals.

After three years, Phillips, editor of the “MrMediaTraining” blog, has finished his first book: The Media Training Bible: 101 Things You Absolutely, Positively Need to Know Before Your Next Interview.

He said the number 101 just sounded more compelling than 95. “It was easy to come up with a few more lessons to meet that number, since some ideas couldn’t be contained in just two pages,” he said.

Phillips calls his book a “Bible” so we put him to the test…

Politico Snags David Chalian

Ever since his hot mic flub, it was a mystery where longtime Washington journo David Chalian would wind up. This morning the cat’s out of the bag: He’s headed to Politico to be their VP of Video Programming to guide their expanding video efforts.

Chalian is the former Yahoo! News’ Washington Bureau Chief. The company immediately fired him after an incident in August in which he made a racial joke against Mitt Romney at a news event and the mic picked it up. “They’re not concerned at all. They’re happy to have a party with black people drowning,” Chalian joked during an ABC News/Yahoo! News webcast.

What’s Gene Tweeting?

I’ll say this about Gene Weingarten. The man is entertaining. The problem is, I’m not sure if he’s losing his mind and we’re laughing at him, or if he is pulling an Andy Kaufman-esque stunt on us and laughing with us. The Pulitzer Prize-winning humorist for WaPo spends a fair amount of time on Twitter. His tweets range from sad attempts at comedy to random observations on everyday life. Gene even lets us in on the life of his dog, Murphy.

Odd dog: My house has 3 stairwells.Murphy will go up and down one, only up on the second, and won’t use the third at all.

— geneweingarten (@geneweingarten) August 29, 2012

Leave it to Gene to take in a dog even weirder than he is. But, that’s hardly the weirdest thing that Gene tweets. He also spends plenty of time tweeting about pee. He tweeted, “I have said this before but it bears repeating: Write your name on the cup first, THEN pee.” I’ve found it always makes sense to take life advice from a man with a pile of poop as his Twitter avatar.

Gene also offers up advice to recently fired Yahoo! News Washington Bureau Chief David Chalian. He tweeted at Chalian, saying, “I don’t know you but I get this joke. It’s at the expense of liberal media, not the Repubs. You should make that clearer.” Weingarten followed up with his followers by saying, “Yahoo! shouldn’t have fired this guy. It was clearly a joke not intended to be public. I’d say same if target was Dems. ”

Chalian hasn’t responded to Weingarten, obviously. When you’re in a hole, it’s probably best to stop digging.

Brewer said she couldn’t hear him and questions were translated through a third party. Needless to say, something was lost in translation.

Yoohoo Robert Allbritton, you listening?

Yahoo!
David Chalian Apologizes for Romney Remarks

During an ABC NEWS/Yahoo online broadcast covering the convention Tuesday evening, Yahoo’s David Chalian said, “”They’re not concerned at all. They’re happy to have a party with black people drowning,” while watching video of a smiling Mitt and Ann Romney. He was referencing the fact that the Republican Convention was taking place as Hurricane Isaac was making landfall. Naturally, Chalian had no idea that his mic was hot and meant for the comments to be heard off air as a “joke.” They weren’t.

Yahoo moved swiftly to fire Chalian and he issued an apology on his Facebook page on Wednesday evening. He says, “I am profoundly sorry for making an inappropriate and thoughtless joke. I was commenting on the challenge of staging a convention during a hurricane and about campaign optics. I have apologized to the Romney campaign, and I want to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to Gov. and Mrs. Romney. I also regret causing any distraction from the exceptional coverage of the Republican convention by Yahoo News and ABC News.”

“Look, when I do talk to my more intellectual friends on the right, and I do have some…” — Lefty journo David Shuster filling in as host of Current TV’s “Full Court Press” this morning in a segment bashing Fox News. Later he added, “By the way, full disclosure, I worked at Fox News in 96 to about 2001, but the organization changed and it was starting to trend in a certain way that I felt uncomfortable with. So it was sort of a mutual agreement that I would leave. I was eager to leave. I had caused enough trouble over there that they were eager to have me leave.”

Yahoo! News’ Bombshell Hire: AFP’s Olivier Knox

Yahoo! News has swooped in and hired Olivier Knox, formerly a congressional correspondent for Agence France-Presse. He is their first White House Correspondent. Knox had been with AFP for more than a decade.

Knox told FishbowlDC: “July would have made it 16 years at AFP,” he wrote in an email. “They hired me right out of SAIS. I’m thrilled, and I guess a little nervous. This is a phenomenal, can’t-turn-it-down opportunity to push myself while working with a team of all-stars. I would be remiss if I didn’t use this opportunity to remember my late mentor, Peter Mackler, to whom I owe all that is good about my reporting (all that’s bad is entirely mine).”

In a early morning release, they explained that Knox has covered “almost every facet of the political story, from presidential campaigns to Congressional drama to the real-world implications of policy decisions at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. As the White House Correspondent, Olivier will bring that broad and deep perspective in his original reporting to the Yahoo! News audience, providing both timely coverage of critical events and a unique perspective on how and why developments in Washington matter for the nation as a whole.”

They cite his keen reporting skills: “Olivier has delivered exclusive takes and scoops and news, including his on-the-scene report of the infamous shoe-throwing incident at former President George W. Bush’s 2008 press conference in Baghdad and the current GOP candidates’ growing calls for ‘covert ops’ directed against Syria. Olivier is also a social media standout, recognized for regularly breaking news on his twitter account.”

The outpouring for Knox on Twitter this morning is what is most striking — if this were a Class President election, or Miss America for that matter, Knox would win hands down — everyone from CNN’s Lizzie O’Leary and former CNNer Campbell Brown to HuffPost‘s Jennifer Bendery, CBS’s John Dickerson, Reuters‘ Sam Youngman, ABC’s Jake Tapper, TPM’s Josh Marshall, PBS’s Christina Bellantoni and The Australian‘s Business Editor Geoff Elliott, all sing his praises.

Olivier will report directly to…

Steve Chaggaris, former CBS News Political Director and former management of TBD, has joined Yahoo! News as Executive Producer, Elections. The news was posted on the site this morning.

And yes, they like him.

“With talent like Steve Chaggaris, we’re fast making Yahoo! News a must-read for the latest political coverage and analysis,” said Robertson Barrett, VP of Yahoo! News, in a release. “Having notable U.S. political voices, like Steve, is powering our 2012 election team to flood the zone with original reporting in key primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire; score newsmaking interviews with all the major GOP contenders; co-sponsor high-profile debates; and examine the issues crucial to voters in 2012, from immigration to the economy to income inequality.”

Among Chaggaris’ duties will be to “help oversee and coordinate the production of special events coverage, including major primaries, debates, the conventions, and election night. He will also work closely with partner ABC News as Yahoo! continues to build on the alliance, coordinating coverage plans for these high profile moments throughout the election cycle.” Based in Washington, he will report to the company’s new D.C. Bureau Chief David Chalian.

Chaggaris begins on Jan. 3.

David Chalian to Yahoo! News

PBS NewsHour’s Political Editor David Chalian has been hired as Yahoo! News‘s Washington Bureau Chief. He begins Nov. 14. Yahoo announced the news on their website at about 2 a.m. this morning.

“We reach more than 150 million voting age adults in the U.S. every month. That’s almost 90 percent of eligible voters and twice the number that actually cast ballots for president in 2008,” said Executive Editor Will Tacy. “With David at the helm, we intend to redefine how political campaigns are covered to make this crucial national decision relevant and interesting to every one of those 150 million Americans.”

Before joining PBS, Chalian was a member of the ABC News political unit for seven years, where he was political director from 2007 until 2010. He’s a Northwestern University graduate. He resides in Washington.

PBS’s Gwen Ifill: ‘Jon Stewart Watches Me’

Gwen Ifill of PBS’ “Newshour” was in Los Angeles Tuesday with Political Editor David Chalian to accept the Walter Cronkite Award for Political Coverage from USC’s prestigious Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

The station was selected by a panel of judges for “through and balanced” political coverage. Ifill and Judy Woodruff were singled out for “focusing on the issues” and avoiding “the horserace component that is so typical in political coverage.” Four pieces in particular, produced by Mary Jo Brooks, Terence Burlij, and Sarah Clune, received awards.

She began her remarks:

It does us all good to see that – no matter what you read, see and hear out there – serious journalism still matters. It’s all I ever wanted to do, and I think I speak for everyone here in saying that we are drawn to journalism for the nobility that can be found in telling untold stories, or in shedding light rather than heat on the over-told ones.

Ifill also set aside time to brag. “When I visit college campuses, students often tell me, ‘I only watch Jon Stewart.’ And I tell them: ‘Jon Stewart watches me.’” She added that Cronkite told her he watched “Newshour” every night.

“If it sounds like I’m boasting, you’re right,” she said. “We are justifiably proud of what we do.”

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY

A lovely political journo sends to FBDC, saying, “Reporters waiting for the time honored tradition of members walking the aisle in Statuary Hall.”

A packed Statuary Hall Tuesday night

Civility comes and goes

“#SOTU civility was fun while it lasted. RT @RepPaulBrounMD: Mr. President, you don’t believe in the Constitution. You believe in socialism.” — NJ‘s Susan Davis in a Tuesday night tweet.

Cheesy talk

“My friends think I’m cheesy thank you,” — Former RNC Spokesman Doug Heye to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow at 12:26 a.m. Wednesday. Heye was responding to Maddow, who told him he is “the big cheese” of Republicans and she’s glad he returns her phone calls.

Weiner TV

“I felt like I just needed a drink when I was done with Paul Ryan and then Michele Bachmann who is clearly not in touch with the mother ship.” — Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow at 12:39 a.m.

Speaking of civility…Olbermann makes fun of congressman’s ears

“Cong. Ryan was selected because he is the House GOP Economic Czar, works out a lot, and can vie with POTUS in an Ear Battle #sotu” — Ex-MSNBCer Keith Olbermann in a Tuesday night live tweet on SOTU. (Note: Olbermann has blocked FBDC on Twitter along with Boy Banders such as Slate’s Dave Weigel and WaPo‘s Ezra Klein. We can, however, still follow his verbose messages.)

Speak of the Devil

“As I was talking to Mark Udall, Anthony Weiner walked by, mocked his “dopey idea” for seating. #SOTU” — Slate‘s Dave Weigel in a Tuesday night tweet.

MTP Producer questions Bachmann’s staging

“Does Michele Bachmann have stage manager that can point her to look at camera?” — NBC MTP Executive Producer Betsy Fischer in a Tuesday night tweet.

Journo offers ‘Cougartown’ shout-out

“We now rejoin Cougartown already in progress.” — ABC News’s Jake Tapper in a Tuesday night tweet.

Computers and a giant hat

“CONFIRMED: Reporters will be allowed to bring computers into the chamber during #SOTU for the first time ever.” – The Daily Caller‘s Chris Moody in a Tuesday night tweet. That’s the logical journo news quote, but we also appreciate this one from Moody: “Rep. Frederica Wilson is saving her seat at SOTU with her giant hat.”

An evening of frustration and cussing

“OK, 12:23 & I’m leaving the office to finish this work at home. Lots of frustration/profanity tonight. May have scared new intern.” — C-SPAN’s Jeremy Art in an early Wednesday morning tweet.

Tie change

“Just like President Obama, @RepPaulRyan changed his tie from earlier today.” — PBS Political Editor David Chalian in a Tuesday night tweet. Chalian, who sent “Twitter photo evidence,” explained to FBDC that while Obama went from purple/lavender in the Oval Office to blue in the evening, Ryan went from gold by day to silver during his SOTU GOP response.

First Lady fashion alert

“For those who have DMed me or tweeted to ask, the first lady was wearing Rachel Roy. #flotusfashion” — Politico‘s Amie Parnes in a Tuesday night tweet.

HuffPost‘s Sam Stein wants guidance

“I need Frank Luntz to tell me what to think.” — HuffPost Senior Political Reporter Sam Stein in a Tuesday night tweet referring to the GOP pollster.

Paul vs. Pawlenty

“Paul Ryan is very Pawlenty-esque.” — WaPo‘s Aaron Blake in a Tuesday night tweet.

A quick SOTU Separated at Birth

“As a reader points out, Rep. Paul Ryan is dead ringer for Gabe on #theoffice.” — Politico‘s Dave Catanese in a Tuesday night tweet.
