After three years, Phillips, editor of the “MrMediaTraining” blog, has finished his first book: The Media Training Bible: 101 Things You Absolutely, Positively Need to Know Before Your Next Interview.

He said the number 101 just sounded more compelling than 95. “It was easy to come up with a few more lessons to meet that number, since some ideas couldn’t be contained in just two pages,” he said.

The company immediately fired him after an incident in August in which he made a racial joke against Mitt Romney at a news event and the mic picked it up. “They’re not concerned at all. They’re happy to have a party with black people drowning,” Chalian joked during an ABC News/Yahoo! News webcast.

Leave it to Gene to take in a dog even weirder than he is. But, that’s hardly the weirdest thing that Gene tweets. He also spends plenty of time tweeting about pee. He tweeted, “I have said this before but it bears repeating: Write your name on the cup first, THEN pee.” I’ve found it always makes sense to take life advice from a man with a pile of poop as his Twitter avatar.

Gene also offers up advice to recently fired Yahoo! News Washington Bureau Chief David Chalian. He tweeted at Chalian, saying, “I don’t know you but I get this joke. It’s at the expense of liberal media, not the Repubs. You should make that clearer.” Weingarten followed up with his followers by saying, “Yahoo! shouldn’t have fired this guy. It was clearly a joke not intended to be public. I’d say same if target was Dems. ”

Chalian hasn’t responded to Weingarten, obviously. When you’re in a hole, it’s probably best to stop digging.

News’ swanky soiree on Wednesday night, here’s a quick recap of what you missed:  Thrown by event extraordinaire Philip Dufour, the party was held in large part to welcome new DC bureau chief David Chalian.  In addition, the newsgroup used the opportunity to kick off their 2012 campaign coverage plans and to raise a glass to their partnership with ABC News.

The station was selected by a panel of judges for “through and balanced” political coverage. Ifill and Judy Woodruff were singled out for “focusing on the issues” and avoiding “the horserace component that is so typical in political coverage.” Four pieces in particular, produced by Mary Jo Brooks, Terence Burlij, and Sarah Clune, received awards.

She began her remarks:

It does us all good to see that – no matter what you read, see and hear out there – serious journalism still matters. It’s all I ever wanted to do, and I think I speak for everyone here in saying that we are drawn to journalism for the nobility that can be found in telling untold stories, or in shedding light rather than heat on the over-told ones.

Ifill also set aside time to brag. “When I visit college campuses, students often tell me, ‘I only watch Jon Stewart.’ And I tell them: ‘Jon Stewart watches me.’” She added that Cronkite told her he watched “Newshour” every night.

“If it sounds like I’m boasting, you’re right,” she said. “We are justifiably proud of what we do.”
