State of Union Walloped With Bad Press

To look at Washington D.C. publications today, you’d think tonight’s State of the Union was the Shit of the Union. You’d also think it was already Wednesday considering the way Debbie Downer news outlets are trashing it before it even happens.

“Expect to Hear an Absolutely Forgettable State of the Union Speech” blares a headline from National Journal. George Condon writes, “When President Obama takes to the speaker’s rostrum on the floor of the House of Representatives Tuesday evening, you can expect him to speak for more than an hour. But don’t bet on him saying anything you’ll remember a month later.” He continues, “Don’t blame the speechwriters, though. Blame the occasion.” Party at Jayson Blair’s house? Newsbusters Tim Graham reports that NYT‘s persona non grata Jayson Blair (who left the publication in a haze of plagiarism a decade ago) is hosting a SOTU watch party tonight in Centreville, Va. They say he now works as (no joke) a life coach. And Politico‘s Patrick Gavin just cobbled together “10 SOTU Gripes Hours Before the Speech.” They include third-tier Boybander, Slate‘s Matt Yglesias, already saying “the speech doesn’t accomplish anything.” USA Today, meanwhile, looks at six State of the Union addresses they believe made a lick of difference in American life. Three occurred in the 1800s. The last one they think mattered happened in 2002. It was former President George W. Bush‘s “Axis of Evil” speech. And if this tells you anything, The Daily Caller‘s only story on tonight’s SOTU address is a drinking game they posted at 2:25 a.m. this morning. A sampling: 1. “If Obama says ‘Let me be clear,’ take a shot of vodka or translucent alcohol of your choice.” 2. What’s SOTU without a joke about House Speaker John Boehner‘s orange-hued tan? “If Speaker of the House John Boehner’s complexion looks particularly orange, pour a screw driver.”

Where’s MSNBC resident loudmouth Chris Matthews and CNN wax figure contributor David Gergen when we need them to blather on? It’s just after noon. The speech happens in nine hours. Don’t they have thoughts on the SOTU 2013?

Pundits, Journos Take a Beating

Pundits and journos of opposing political persuasions took their share of punches last night as debate coverage rolled late into the night.

CNN’s Paul Begala: From a follower — “Paul, grow some hair, and get a brain!!”

CNN’s Ari Fleischer: From Ari — “So according to Twitter I’m a magical undead gentle greyhound lizard zombie vampire vulcan. Got it.” This stemmed from follower Emily Pranger, who wrote, “Whoa. Ari Shapiro looks undead.” Chris Dlugosz added, “I never realized until now that Ari Shapiro looks liks a magical gentle lizard.” And yet another Emily wrote, “Presidential debate. This Ari Shapiro guy looks like he’s 15 and 97 all at once. Without a doubt a vampire.”

CNN’s David Gergen: “David Gergen looks like a thumb.” — IowaHawk‘s David Burge.

Breitbart.com‘s and CNN Contributor Dana Loesch: From a follower, Selena Hines — “@DLoesch Oh shut up! I’m about sick of you!! Romney has been disrespectful the entire debate! Your probably racist.”

The Daily Caller‘s Matt Lewis: From Lewis — “An angry reader ends an email to me with this: ‘May God have mercy on your soul.’”

MetroWeekly Co-Publisher Sean Bugg had feedback for CNN as a whole. Or else a confessional. He wrote, “CNN just hurts my eyes before I can even get to any sort of judgment about their journalism.” And Barron‘s Washington Editor James McTague agreed, saying, “Small wonder CNN ratings are so low.”

Quotes of the Day

A RELAXED ROLAND: “Somebody’s tuckered out.” — Video journo Liz Glover with accompanying photograph of CNN Contributor and TV ONE’s Roland Martin.

“I’m already all shook up. In anticipation. Brand new tissue box: check.” — author Terry McMillan during the speeches last night.

A little too gushing?

“Biden is one of the best liked people in politics — on both sides. And he has earned that affection. #CNN” — CNN’s David Gergen. At a time when CNN is trying to paint MSNBC as too in love with Democrats, this was a peculiar thing to say.

Humblebrag: Rosario grabbed my Snickers!

“Hey! @rosariodawson just grabbed my last Snickers. What a great way to end the great @ABC/ @YahooNews convention coverage.” — ABC News Producer and Digital Journalist David Meyers.

The Team Player

“Partisan people on both sides seem to not like when their side gets fact-checked, but love when the other side does. CNN fact-checks both.” — CNN Piers Morgan Tonight staffer Steve Krakauer.

Do they think he stinks?

“Street vendors selling Obama air fresheners. I kid you not.” — WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza.

The Speeches. Kerry. Biden. Obama.

Sen. John Kerry

“Punditry correction: predicted that Senator Kerry would flop. Was wrong.” — BuzzFeed‘s Michael Hastings.

“ROCKY IV DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE A PARTISAN PUNCH LINE. SHAME ON YOU” — a uncharacteristically dramatic HuffPost‘s Sam Stein.

“John Kerry’s speech was so good, this entire arena is fired up, ready to go avenge Apollo Creed’s death.” — NJ “The Hotline” Polling Editor Steve Shepard.

Veep Joe Biden

“There is literally no heaven.” — NY Daily News’ Josh Greenman.

“It’s about healing. And putting a bullet between the bastard’s eyes.” — David Frum.

“I think Joe Biden looks FAB in his infomercial. I also like his voice. See, I said something nice!” — Conservative radio host Laura Ingraham.

“My Dad is live-blogging Biden’s speech to me via text… Never should’ve gotten him that iPhone.” — Yahoo! News‘s Chris Moody.

“Joe Biden loves him some ‘literally’. Literally. #dnc2012″ — WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza.

“Joe Biden is off to a really personable start with all the kiddos. snff snff” — HuffPost‘s Christina Wilkie.

President Obama

“Obama not just criticizing GOP. He is mocking them, again and again.” — The Hill‘s Managing Editor Bob Cusack.

“I’m not only the Hair Club president, I’m also a client.” — WaPo‘s Felicia Sonmez.

“Time for Biden to rush out shirtless in pirate garb swallowing a torch of fire.” – TV pundit, blogger, author Craig Crawford.

“I am bored to death. #figuratively” — Reason magazine’s Nick Gillespie.

“Crowd definitely not as jazzed either. Better than in Tampa, though, where the noise died within about 30 seconds of Romney’s speech ending.” — Times of London‘s Matt Spence.

“Is it just me, or are the applause lines falling much flatter than I presume he intended?” — Townhall‘s Kate Hicks.

“If This doesn’t pick up soon, the obituaries are going to start flowing. I give it 10 more mins before the impression is locked.” — Mediaite‘s Noah Rothman.

“Obama says he’s mindful of his own failings. I wish we could hear his honest discussion of what he could have done better.” — NYT‘s Jodi Kantor.

On another note…“Joe Biden’s daughter’s dress is AWESOME. #notapoliticalstatement” — Politico producer Leigh Munsil.

And what’s a night without a little media bashing? “Even MSNBC is looking disappointed tonight. Though they are trying to cover it up. But you can see the heartache in their eyes.” — Breitbart.com editor Jon Nolte.

Journo gets emotional about FLOTUS’s seating

Say hello to CNN.com’s Managing Editor Meredith Artley. Today we’ve abandoned the traditional Fishbowl interview for a relatively more serious peek into a major network’s online world. Artley was in town recently for a journalism conference. We met up with her at Founding Farmers to drink bacon martinis and yak about a range of topics that included how journos ingest their news these days, which news sites are must reads and whether it’s goofy or chic for couples to sit on the same side of a booth in this country (she thinks it’s making a comeback).

How long have you been at CNN? Two years and change.

What was your first job in journalism? Intern at Cox Broadcasting on North Capitol!

Living in Atlanta. Blessing or a curse? I love it here. The people, parks and pace are all great. Atlanta has this real funky, creative side that I never heard about til I moved here.

What is something fun and something tedious about your job? Email.

What’s your New Year’s resolution for CNN.com? We have a lot of content pulsing through our site every day. We don’t need more, we need to make what we have as good as it can possibly be. So a big theme of the year, as the whole CNN Digital team knows from our staff huddles, is that we are focusing on craftsmanship of every piece of journalism we do. It’s all about the storytelling.

I understand that Opinion is one of the fastest growing sections on your site. For a network that prides itself in staying center, do you find it odd that your readers are gravitating toward that section? I don’t find it odd that audiences are flocking to intelligent perspectives on some of the hottest topics of the day. Our opinion section is not only one of our fastest-growing sections, but it’s our most social in terms of shares and retweets. And that’s saying a lot, since CNN has more followers and friends than any news org out there.

There’s been a recent debate in online media circles about the censorship of comment sections. Where do you stand on the issue and how do you address inappropriate commenters on your site? Open it up, baby. It’s a community moderated world. We trust our audiences, and we use every piece of technology we can to give a space for our smart commenters to tell the trolls to buzz off. We fight the good fight to create a fast-flowing discussion on nearly every piece of content we generate. We often join in those conversations as CNN staff. And every day, the best of those comments become content in their own right, via our daily “Overheard” column.

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

Quotes of the Day

The Keen Observer

“Did Ari Fleischer come directly from a crack house? I’ve got Samsonites smaller than those bags under his eyes.” — Reason Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Nick Gillespie. Gillespie was on quite the roll. He also wrote, CNN’s “John King = generic human Ambien.” And this: “Gergen thinks in full fragments,” referring to CNN Senior Political Analyst David Gergen. And this: “Listening to most dull pundits is like drinking from a broken water fountain; listening to Gergen like drinking from broken fire hydrant!”

More on Ari…

“I think I speak for everyone still awake when I say we need a closer shot of Ari’s face.” — The New Yorker‘s Washington Correspondent Ryan Lizza.

Newt’s split personality

“Thing about Newt Gingrich is you never know who is going to show up. Right? It could be the good Newt, the smart Newt, the full of good ideas Newt, or it could be the negative, nasty, anti-media Newt Gingrich. I think we saw the first Newt Gingrich.” — CNN’s Gloria Borger.

Uh oh.

“Troubling metaphor? While frantically filing for second edition, cleaning staff turns out the lights in the bureau.” — USA Today’s Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page. About two hours earlier there were also difficulties. She wrote, “Our CNN feed keeps flickering on and off. This could make covering the debate more, um, difficult.”

What does a male sports anchor know about lipstick?

“Wow, Bachman went extra heavy on the lipstick .. #toomuchmakeup” — NBC4 sports anchor Dan Hellie on GOP Presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann.

“Betsy, sweetheart, you need therapy. Please don’t try to work out your issues on your blog. It’s sad to watch, honestly.
National Press Club Exec. Dir. strikes back against suspended member

“It’s not like Sam Husseini can go to the White House, Congress or the State Department and ask a question. We’re about the only place in town he can go and ask a question. We are his meal ticket. For him to say we’re censoring is ridiculous.” — National Press Club Executive Director William McCarren on club member Sam Husseini‘s suspension and charge that the club is censoring him. Husseini was suspended after he allegedly behaved in a disruptive manner at a recent press conference with a Saudi prince. Missed the report published late Tuesday?
David Gergen is not Dead

National Review Online‘s Jonah Goldberg was apparently being witty this morning when he presumed that CNN’s David Gergen was six feet under. “The news is so confusing. If only David Gergen was still alive to explain it all,” Goldberg said on Twitter early this morning.

Good thing Gergen, a professor at Harvard Kennedy School, was already awake and kicking. “I am alive and well. Thank you!” Gergen replied.

Jonah? “Huzzah!” he replied back.

The exchange caused a brief flurry of tweets to Gergen making sure nothing tragic had happened. Goldberg has made it a practice to occasionally tweak Gergen, a former presidential advisor who served in four administrations. He’s Editor-at-large for U.S. News & World Report and a Senior Political Analyst for CNN. “I’ve been making fun of Gergen for a while on Twitter,” Goldberg told FishbowlDC this morning. “He’s a nice and honorable guy. I actually worked with him on a PBS series once when I was a whippersnapper. He’s just such a fixture of conventional wisdom.”

In short, Goldberg stressed, he was just joking around.

But there’s more. Goldberg’s feelings for Gergen run cold. He can easily envision Gergen on the cover of Boring White Men Monthly…

The Oval Office: Intolerably Taupe

The most powerful room in America gets new couches, rugs and baubles. And suddenly everyone’s a decorator. The NYT “Home” section featured a story this morning with the headline, “The Audacity of Taupe.” In it, HuffPost Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington was among those chosen to play decorator. She said it looked like something out of an Embassy Suites. She also said Malia’s seventh grade friends would find aspects of it “lame.”

But the NYT is just one publication in an endless line of outlets around the world weighing in. UK’s celebrity weekly rag Hello! Magazine remarked, “It seems the US president has opted for comfort over tradition…” Others who have little or no business discussing interior decorating have things to get off their chests. Among the armchair decorators are CNN senior political analyst David Gergen in the NYT piece and Lonnie Love, a comedian who went off on Obama’s Oval Office makeover last night in an attitudinal tirade on E!’s late-night “Chelsea Lately” show.

Gergen: Personally, I prefer a more regal office to the muted earth tones of the family den. But so what?

Love: It looks horrible. It looks like my first college apartment. We’re the most powerful nation in the world. it shouldn’t look like a den, and that’s what it looks like. Ok, I mean we need some POWER. Put some COLOR. The economy is BAD. We need some COLOR! Put some REDS, WHITES, BLUE!

Love is nothing if not patriotic. But Gergen? He should stick to analyzing POTUS’ and not office decor, even if he did responsibly stress, “I don’t care how he lives, I care how he leads.”

Funniest Massa Quotes En Masse

The past 24 hours in Washington D.C. has brought a tidal wave of reaction to the latest scandal to blow through town. This one, like all of them, comes with details that are better than fiction. Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.), a freshman lawmaker, talked tickle fights with staff and a purported naked shower chat with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. He mentioned cancer, but the jury (and prognosis) are still out on that.

In the meantime, D.C. journos and media types weigh in:

Kevin Madden, GOP strategist and pundit: “This whole Massa Mess needs some road flares, an ambulance and some highway police to shout: ‘move it along, folks…’ just awful.”

WaPo’s Howard Kurtz:
“Massa tries same faux ‘apology’: Rahm wouldn’t strap his children to a locomotive, he’d strap my children. Was lame the first time.”

ABC’s Jake Tapper:
“The entire DC press corps has descended into a giant tickle fight.”

Mother Jones’s David Corn:
“Has Massa blown his chance to be Sarah Palin’s running mate?”

The Washington Independent’s Dave Weigel:
BREAKING: Video surfaces of Massa’s shower confrontation with Rahm… DEVELOPING… http://bit.ly/cPb4SM / Spot on.

HuffPost’s Arianna Huffington:
“Having to interview Eric Massa for an hour really made me feel for him [FNC's Glenn Beck],” Huffington told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on “AC360″.

@pourmecoffee:
“Relieved Larry King doesn’t somehow have Jermaine Jackson or Carol Channing randomly with him for Massa interview.”

CNN Senior Political Analyst David Gergen on “AC360″:
“Well, Anderson, people say Washington politics is a freakshow and Eric Massa is writing a whole new chapter.”

What Did You Do For Lunch?

If you’re certain White House reporters, the answer could be lunch with President Obama…

Politico reports that CNN’s David Gergen, WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza, Newsweek‘s Jon Meacham and Howard Fineman, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution‘s Cynthia Tucker, Politico‘s Mike Allen, NPR/Fox’s Mara Liasson, TPM‘s Josh Marshall and NYT‘s David Brooks, Andy Rosenthal, and Gail Collins joined the President, David Axelrod, Anita Dunn, Bill Burton and Robert Gibbs for an off-the-record lunch today.

Lunch apparently lasted two hours and green salad, halibut and pear tart were served.
