Politico’s VandeHarris: ‘Some Exciting Editor Moves…’

What passes for “exciting” in Washington would be a real snoozer in most other cities. But let’s proceed. Today Politico‘s VandeHarris (a human fusion of Editor-in-Chief John Harris and Executive Editor Jim VandeHei) sent a memo to reporters on new editors in their midst.

The memo announces major promotions:

Marty Kady: For the past two years, he has been the congressional editor. He will now be Deputy Managing Editor for Politico and Editor of Politico Pro (a position formerly held by the temper-filled Tim Grieve, who will no longer be working that closely with humans). Kady will be dealing with Grieve on managing the more than 60 employees who work for that section.

Rachel Smolkin: She has been deputy editor and then editor of White House coverage. She will now be Deputy Managing Editor for Politico.

See the other moves… continued…

Politico Issues First Annual Report Cards

Politico and its sister outlet Politico Pro handed out “Policymaker of the Year” awards at the Mandarin Oriental Tuesday night. It was their version of report cards, and if they were to issued themselves a letter grade, it would be one notch above an A-plus.

The “welcome” table, stage banners, cocktail table tops, pens and even the napkins were branded with the publications’ names. Call it marketing, but we’re still seeing red spots when we blink.

Kicking off the evening was a “Year in Review” panel discussion with Politico 2012 reporter Alex Burns joined by Pro reporters Elizabeth Wasserman, Dan Berman, and David Nather. The event was led by Executive Editor Jim Vandehei and Chief White House Correspondent Mike Allen. Breakout sessions with policy experts on health care, technology and energy followed.

Allen also moderated the health care panel, nodding his head when he agreed with the speakers, looking out into the audience every three minutes and smiling like a proud son of Politico‘s Founding Fathers.

We didn’t take away much from the session because, coincidentally, there was a lot of coughing going on, making it hard to hear as we feared for our health. But we noticed the stylish cufflinks Allen wore and asked him about them at the cocktail reception after. He said he bought them in Manhattan from Pink, though “someone thought they were Lego.” The cufflinks are pictured at the right.

Politico Pro is just over a year old. Part of the evening was to celebrate it. An attendee who works in the health insurance industry spoke with us at the reception, though she was too shy to be named. She told us she likes Pro, but said it might be becoming too pricey. (In explanation…The rates are tricky. They have varying rates depending on which policy area you want, if it’s for a company or individual, etc. For an individual, Pro Health Care is $2495/year — a rate that will jump to $4495 in the new year. Happy New Year, folks.)

After cocktails, “Policymaker of the Year” awards went to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.), Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Tex.) and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

The bar was a big hit. Overheard during the reception…

Attendee 1: I found the bar faster than you.

Attendee 2: I can’t believe that.

Today Politico Pro announces the new hire of NJ‘s Matt DoBias.

Before NJ, DoBias was the Washington Bureau Chief of Modern Healthcare for five years.

See the memo from Politico Pro Editor Tim Grieve that brags of other reporters they’ve stolen from other publications…

Four New Hires at Politico Pro

Politico Pro editor Tim Grieve sent out a pretty cutesy memo earlier this week, opening with “breaking news to report on health care reform – and it’s not all coming from Capitol Hill.” Actually, none of it is coming from Capitol Hill. It’s all coming from Politico Pro. Four new hires this week:

David Nather, formerly of Bloomberg, Congressional Quarterly, and the Dallas Morning News

Lester Feder, who has reported for Newsweek, The Nation, and Slate

Deputy energy editor Bob King from the Palm Beach Post

and web producer Brittany Hackett

Men Overboard: Nather Leaves CQ, Stein to Follow?

David Nather is leaving CQ after almost a decade to co-write a book on health care reform with Tom Daschle.

Nather’s exit follows that of ace defense reporter Josh Rogin who took up at Foreign Policy last week, replacing Laura Rozen. Additionally, sources tell FishbowlDC that spy guy Jeff Stein has been spotted meeting with Politico editors Jim Vandehei, Bill Nichols and John Harris. When asked about a possible Politico future, Jeff Stein replied “no comment.”

See Susan Benkelman‘s announcement about Nather’s departure after the jump.
