NYT’s Helene Cooper Wins Urbino Press Award

Italian Ambassador Giulio Terzi announced Wednesday night that the recipient of the 2011 Urbino Press Award is Helene Cooper, White House Correspondent for NYT. The award is given each year to an American journalist “for distinguished reporting on the ever-changing world.” Cooper, born in Monrovia, Liberia, had to flee the country after the 1980 coup. She wrote about her experiences in the war-torn African country in her memoir, The House at Sugar Beach.

Previous winners include: ABC’s Martha Raddatz, NYT Columnist Thomas Friedman, WaPo’s David Ignatius and NPR’s Diane Rehm.

Cooper’s remarks: “I’m incredibly honored to receive this year’s Urbino Press Award, for both professional and personal reasons. Professionally, I’m thrilled and humbled to share a stage with David Ignatius, Tom Friedman and Martha Raddatz—they are all first-rate chroniclers of the world around us. And personally for me, there is no higher honor than being recognized by the cultural heirs of Baldassare Castiglione, Elisabetta Gonzaga and Federico da Montefeltro—a trio who epitomized Renaissance cool as far as I’m concerned. Grazie mille, Urbino.”

Cooper is scheduled to receive her prize in a ceremony in Urbino on June 3.

Slate Writer Gets a Taste of Her Own Medicine

A couple of weeks ago, Slate’s D.C.-based Emily Yoffe posted a slideshow of people she thought should throw in the towel. Among them: Sumner Redstone, majority owner of CBS and Paramount Pictures, 60 Minutes’ Andy Rooney, NPR host Diane Rehm, and even such teen idols as Justin Bieber and Dick Clark (not a teen idol).

She asked for feedback. And boy, did she get it. Who knew Slate readers were such staunch Bieber defenders?

On Friday, she announced what readers had to say: “The results are in, and your No. 1 pick is … me! Many were moved to name me because they found my piece to be ‘mean-spirited,’ ‘outrageous and delusional,’ ‘useless drivel,’ ‘unfair,’ ‘hateful,’ ‘rude,’ and ‘ageist.’ One reader wanted to know, ‘Why don’t you just line these old folks up and shoot them?’”

Though Yoffe admits her column was “cheeky,” she didn’t back down. She also published other readers’ picks (ones that weren’t her). They include Pat Buchanan for his apparent anti-Semitism, John McCain, and “the Comics page,” because so many of its comics are written by ancient people and, in the case of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts, a dead person.

Good morning FishbowlDC! Happy Birthday to Mix 107.3′s Tommy McFly! Another Happy Birthday goes to Elizabeth Thorp, celebrating this weekend.

Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line. What we know and what we’re reading this Wednesday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | RADIO | ONLINE | MAGAZINES | NEWS NOTES | REVOLVING DOOR | JOBS

NEWSPAPERS

Graydon Carter in Vanity Fair on newspapers, “The Paper Chase”: My suggestion to newspapers everywhere is to give the public a reason to read them again. So here’s an idea: get on a big story with widespread public appeal, devote your best resources to it, say a quiet prayer, and swing for the fences.

TV

The first NBC special “Inside the Obama White House” aired last night. As the president and Brian Williams were driving to get burgers, Williams asked President Obama whether when he’s watching cable TV and lands on a news channel and sees a debate underway about him, does he stop and watch? An interesting answer from the President– “I generally don’t. Mainly because I don’t find most of the cable chatter very persuasive. I’ve used this analogy before, it feels like WWF wrestling. Everybody’s got their role to play. I know a lot of these guys. And if Pat Buchanan is having a conversation with Chris Matthews or talking to Keith Olbermann, everybody’s got their set pieces and, so, I don’t feel as if I’m learning anything from the debate.”

CNN’s Campbell Brown returned from maternity leave Monday to her regular 8 p.m. EST timeslot. The show had a new name, a new look, a new EP, and, perhaps most notably, a new opening: The show has dropped “No Bias, No Bull” from the title. More at TVNewser.

NPR’s Diane Rehm will receive the AAUW/NASPA Women of Distinction Award at the University of Maryland on Thursday at the 2009 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders.
Politico’s Mike Allen is switching to Saudi time with the President. His widely read Playbook was out at about 5:30am today.

Stephen Colbert to guest edit Newsweek? True. NYO: Since Newsweek’s redesign, the magazine’s editors have sent out a statement that they intend to sever any and all connection to the turgid, dusty newsweekly of yore. And for the next issue that hits newsstands on June 8, Comedy Central funnyman Stephen Colbert will be Newsweek’s guest editor.

From Playbook today: The American Society of Magazine Editors “Best Cover Contest” for 2009 includes among its 10 categories: “Best Obama Cover (featuring President Barack Obama).”

NEWS NOTES

They range from projects on community-financed reporting and media “test kitchens” at universities to a new journalism institute in India.”

It is day 100 covering the Obama administration and week 13 for us. What we know and what we’re reading this Wednesday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | RADIO | ONLINE | MAGAZINES | WEST WING REPORTAGE | NEWS NOTES | JOBS

If USA Today falls another two percentage points while WSJ holds steady, WSJ will once again claim the largest paid weekday circulation in the U.S.

TVNewser takes a look at life after layoffs for broadcast journos.

ABC’s Brian Ross‘ investigative reporting was questioned in an article on the front page of NYT in yesterday’s paper.
“So, if planes go into buildings, well, don’t blame Barack Obama, blame Dana Priest and the chaos that occurred after that, ’cause that was — when her article came out, from that point forward, this secret CIA program was dead on arrival.” -MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough on Morning Joe yesterday in a discussion about torture.
Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) introduced a bill yesterday to save newspapers. The legislation would allow newspaper companies to restructure as nonprofilts with a variety of tax breaks. A Cardin spokesman tells Reuters the bill had yet to attract any co-sponsors, but had sparked plenty of interest within the media, which has seen plunging revenues and many journalist layoffs.

The Chicago Tribune and LATimes are combining their international reporting operations as their corporate parent tries to save money while reorganizing in bankruptcy court. Only once did he deliver a sharp rejoinder, when Henry pressed him on why it took him days to express outrage about the AIG bonuses. ‘I like to know what I’m talking about before I speak,’ the president said.”

It’s very gratifying to know the program is touching so many people,” Rehm says.

From Politico, Obama seeks filter-free news: “At a time when his Washington honeymoon is turning into a hazing, President Barack Obama and his team are launched on a strategy to sail above the traditional White House press corps by reaching out to liberal commentators, local reporters and ethnic media… But those moves are only part of a much larger strategy aimed at communicating directly with audiences the White House believes are more sympathetic to the president’s agenda – and one in which much of the work is being done by Obama’s top advisers.”

Full circle: the Times-Picayune reports that the TSA has cleared Senator David Vitter (R-LA) on the aforementioned airport gate incident.

Good Morning FishbowlDC!

Its day 36 covering the Obama administration and week 4 for us. Happy Mardi Gras!

What we know and what we’re reading this FAT Tuesday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | RADIO | ONLINE | JOBS

NEWPAPERS

NYT’s Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet spoke to a group of Columbia University students. “Your generation will get to reinvent journalism in a more meaningful way.” Finally, some good news.

Steve Coll and Matthew Yglesias ponder whether the death of newspapers as we know them would really be apocalyptic on NPR’s On the Media.

Forbes reports as the parent company of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News slid toward the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing it made over the weekend, the CEO was getting a raise.

Some think the NYT overplayed the Nixon Tapes.

What exactly is a master of “snarky mimesis” because I think my co-editor Matt Dornic just may be one too… Media Matters takes a look at the NYT’s review of David Denby‘s book “Snark,” in which he pronounces Tom Wolfe and Maureen Dowd masters of “snarky mimesis.”

TV

President Obama’s address this evening will run about 50 minutes long with applause.

RADIO

No surprise that Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity top Talkers Magazine 2009 Heavy Hundred list, but you maybe surprised that DC local NPR’s Diane Rehm is all the way down at #92. Imus is #20, Rachel Maddow #46.

ONLINE

More Howard Kurtz on Twitter in his online chats. “Look, Twitter may turn out to be a fad, and I noted in my piece that it has an incestuous quality. But I’ve got 2,900 people following me on Twitter and they aren’t all Beltway insiders by a long shot. I happen to think it’s good that big-shot TV anchors are making an attempt to engage with their viewers. Politicians, pro athletes and CEOs are among those posting on Twitter. It has its limitations, but it’s also an intriguing form of communication.”

JOBS
