Politics Daily’s Melinda Henneberger is Laid Off

Politics Daily‘s Editor-in-Chief Melinda Henneberger has been laid off today. The news was expected as part of the AOL-HuffPost merger. No word yet on what will happen to the site, but we’re hearing that not everyone from the site will be leaving. We reached Henneberger by phone, but she said she was in a meeting and rushed off the phone without saying anything about the layoff.

Politics Daily‘s daily email with a comment from Melinda along with snapshots of the day’s stories was not dispatched this morning. No indication on her Facebook page, except a Politics Daily writer, Donna Trussell writes, “I [Love] Melinda,” with love being a heart emoticon.

UPDATE: We’re hearing that Walter Shapiro and Patricia Murphy have also been laid off.

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY

May she be risen.” — NBC’s Luke Russert in a Tuesday tweet accompanied by the above photograph.

Remembering Elizabeth

“I’d spent a little bit of time with Elizabeth Edwards in Iowa, she was unlike any other political spouse I’d ever met.” — Roll Call Editor Christina Bellantoni in a Tuesday night tweet.

Major Garrett rejoins ‘cool kids‘

“As you might imagine, last night’s Christmas party I was a print reporter rejoining the cool kids as a print reporter. I will not be there Friday for the Broadcast party.” — NJ‘s Major Garrett on MSNBC’s “Daily Rundown” this morning. But seriously, we know who the real cool kids are (wink wink Slate‘s Dave Weigel).

Journo feeling joy of season

“I’ve been to a couple of WH xmas parties now in both Bush & Obama admins and I have to say, they’re always magical & live up to expectations.” — Politico‘s Amie Parnes in a Wednesday morning tweet.

Noisy awfulness

“Why a car alarm? Why now?” — National Review’s Kathryn Lopez in a Wednesday morning tweet.

D.C. Reporter: ‘A bag of bones cannot carry a child’

“I think Rachel Zoe is faking her pregnancy. A bag of bones cannot carry a child. Has anyone seen a photo?” asks Human Events Senior Editor Emily Miller in a Tuesday Facebook update on the celeb stylist. Politics Daily‘s “Woman Up” writer Donna Trussell replies, “Oooooo I just googled images. Yikes.” Miller then casts an investigative eye on the matter: “I meant has anyone seen photographic EVIDENCE that the bag of bones is with child. I just think she’s pretending for PR.”

Blame it on the office

“I think I need to have the home office tested for Inertia.” — Slate‘s John Dickerson in a Wednesday morning tweet.

Kurtz lips are sealed – sort of

“Just back from WH Xmas party. A no-tweeting rule was imposed so my lips are sealed! Have to save it for my memoir.” — The Daily Beast‘s Washington Bureau Chief Howard Kurtz wildly holding himself back in a Tuesday night tweet. To be fair to Howie, he wasn’t the only jouno to tweet about the no-tweeting rule — Bellantoni was also among the non-tweeting tweeters.

Happy Birthday to Ann Coulter. Secret she doesn’t want you know: The GOP pundit is not as vicious as she wants you to think. Also birthday wishes to Bloomberg TV‘s Lizzie O’Leary, a Fishbowl regular.

White House Correspondents’ Association Entertainment for the April 2011 scholarship dinner: SNL‘s “Weekend Update” anchor Seth Myers — first reported by Politico‘s Mike Allen.

Politics Daily Columnist Defends Sean Penn, Says She Would Have ‘Throttled’ Examiner Columnist

Politics Daily’s Woman UP (my favorite utterance in the D.C. journalistic lexicon) published a column this weekend by Donna Trussell called “In Defense of Sean Penn”. In it, she has an interesting take on why Penn should be praised and not villainized. She says she would have liked to “throttle” (she stresses, not literally) the Washington Examiner’s Tara Palmeri for recently asking Penn about his comment that he’d like his critics to get rectal cancer. (As previously reported, Palmeri got thrown out of a D.C. Penn/Haiti event for her question.)

Trussell, naturally, brings in her ovarian cancer. She also discusses the color of awareness colorectal cancer ribbons – which were changed from something truly horrifying (brown?) to navy blue – a far more dignified color for colorectal cancer.

Why are we talking rectal cancer again? Right, “In defense of Sean Penn.” She writes, “The man is a genius.”

Read Trussell’s column here.

Color Me Confused on “Controversial” Bra Campaign

Politics Daily’s Woman Up, I’m convinced, is Washington, D.C.’s greatest creation. I feel guilty that it has been a few weeks since I’ve looked at it, like a lovely new friend I’ve ignored because I’ve had other, more (and less) important things to do. But I’m drunk on Woman Up. It’s like an episode of “Jersey Shore” — it’s a gift that keeps giving and giving until it yacks all over you.

The headline on a Woman Up story Monday by Donna Trussell declared: My Bra? Color me Furious.

Color me confused. The author is angry because of Facebook’s colorful bra campaign in which women reveal their bra color to raise awareness for cancer and remind other women to get checked. Trussell says it’s all awareness and no action. “Never mind the breasts. Save the women,” she writes. She reveals her own history of ovarian cancer — and also a brooding resentment against those with breast cancer. Those breast cancer women get way more attention (and funding) than those with ovarian cancer, she writes.

She’s got a point on one thing: A luncheon for cancer survivors should not have a spoof on “boobs” for entertainment. Not cool.

But bra colors to raise awareness about breast cancer? Right. Makes me furious, too.

Read the story.
