NPR’s Margaret Low Smith Named President of AtlanticLIVE

md2qtgdoloqe8n04c95kNPR’s Margaret Low Smith was named VP of The Atlantic and president of AtlanticLIVE, its events division. In this role, she’ll oversee all aspects of AtlanticLIVE and lead Steve Clemons, Washington editor-at-large of The Atlantic and head of LIVE content, and Emily Akhtarzandi, the LIVE sales team’s managing director of business development. Smith replaces Elizabeth Baker Keffer, founding president of AtlanticLIVE, who left for the Chicago-based investment firm BDT & Company in February 2014.

For NPR, Smith ran a division of nearly 400 journalists as its senior vice president for news since early 2011. Read more

Emily Akhtarzandi Back at Atlantic Media

In an email to staff yesterday, AtlanticLIVE President Elizabeth Baker Keffer announced the hiring of Emily Akhtarzandi as Managing Director of Business Development. AtlanticLIVE is the events division of Atlantic Media, and in the newly-created position, Emily will be responsible for cultivating new clients and event partners. Emily previously worked at The Atlantic between 2000 and 2008, ultimately rising to National Advertising Director there. During that time, she was instrumental in developing Atlantic Media’s event business and brought some of their original clients into custom programs, public forums, and the Aspen Ideas Festival.  For the past three years, she has served as Strategic Partnership Manager for Washington Post Live, where she has managed relationships and sales with major event clients.

Emily will be based out of Washington, and reports to work January 14th. Join us in wishing her well at her new job!

Atlantic Names Prez for QuartzLive

Elizabeth Baker Keffer, President of AtlanticLIVE and VP of The Atlantic, is taking on new roles. She will be President of QuartzLive and Senior VP/Group Publisher of Live Events for all of Atlantic Media Company. In her expanded role, Keffer will be responsible for building Quartz’s global events business.

Prior to Atlantic Media, Keffer worked at the Advisory Board Company and the Corporate Executive Board for 16 years — two sister companies in the business research and consulting field, where she served as Executive VP and Chief Marketing Officer, and managed marketing strategy, revenue growth, and international expansion of those firms.

The news was announced this morning.

The Atlantic’s Work Summit Attracts Sec. Arne Duncan, Sen. Mark Warner and AOL’s Steve Case

The Atlantic‘s New Work Era Summit on Tuesday is bringing in government and business leaders to discuss challenges facing American workers today and how to best prepare for future workforce trends.

Featured speakers: Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education; Senator Mark Warner (D-VA); and Steve Case, founder of AOL and a member of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

The event takes place at the Newseum from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

To coincide with tomorrow’s summit, The Atlantic and McKinsey & Company are joining forces for “The Great Jobs Debate,” a two-week special report on TheAtlantic.com. Beginning Tuesday, July 12, says a release, experts in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors will weigh in on one crucial question: what single thing should the government do to create jobs? Contributors include: Michelle Rhee, former D.C. schools chief; Siemens CEO Eric Spiegel; Mayor Julian Castro of San Antonio; Carl Schramm, CEO of the Kauffman Foundation; Matthew Yglesias of Think Progress, and The Atlantic‘s Megan McArdle, among others.

Atlantic LIVE Brings on New Event Sales Hire

Alisha Hathaway has been named Managing Director of Atlantic LIVE, the events division of The Atlantic, where she will focus on event sales.  She’ll work closely with Elizabeth Baker Keffer, Vice President of The Atlantic and President of Atlantic LIVE.

Alisha’s move to The Atlantic brings her full circle in the Atlantic Media Company’s magazine portfolio. Alisha started as marketing manager with The Hotline in 1994, moving to Government Executive in 1997 in a variety of advertising sales roles and then to NJ in 2001 as Advocacy Advertising Manager, Managing Director and Associate Publisher. Most recently, Alisha was Senior Director and Executive Advisor with the Marketing Leadership Council, a division of the Corporate Executive Board.
