Howard Fineman’s rant against ESPN, Luke Russert

HuffPost and MSNBC’s Howard Fineman, usually a mild-mannered Washington journalist, went on quite a tirade last night against what he believes to be the shoddy reporting of ESPN and the apparent stupidity of NBC’s Luke Russert. 1. 9:25 p.m. “Luke Russert u have no idea what you are talking about.” 2. 9:43 p.m. “Luke Russert nobody cares about ice hockey, and I say that as an alum of hockey-mad Colgate. Frozen Four gets two back page columns in NYT.” 3. 9:45 p.m. “ESPN announcers continuing to make excuses for lame Florida and trash Louisville. Also they keep misusing the word ‘disinterested.’” His rant went on after midnight. 4. 12:16 a.m. “I’m sorry. The lackadaisical, grudging ESPN coverage of Louisville’s dismantling of Florida was infuriating, at least to me.”

NYT Bureau Chief praises D.C. area Sichuan

“I remain pleasantly surprised by Sichuan quality in DC burbs.” — David Leonhardt, Washington Bureau Chief for the NYT.  Last night Leonhardt was discussing the Asian cuisine with Reuters finance blogger Felix Salmon, who wrote, “Sushi Yasuda. And NY’s Szechuan chefs move around a lot.” And added, “I went to Lan Sheng today, spectacular. And Hot Kitchen is still amazing too. Not sure if GS is a chain.” (By the way, both Sichuan and Szechuan are acceptable spellings of the word, so neither journalist got it wrong.)

Reuters Website on the Mend?

Want to read something from the Opinion section of the Reuters website? Well, you may be in luck. But if you checked in just a few minutes ago or any time in the past week, you would have received the apology note below.

Strangely enough, within the past half hour the Opinion section is back up and running with media writer Jack Shafer‘s latest column third in the mix. But please note, the blog section, where writers like Shafer and Felix Salmon ordinarily live, is still down.

Reuters and WSJ recently reported that the blogging platform of its website had been hacked. Posted on the site was a false story declaring that Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister had died. On August 3, they wrote, “Reuters was forced to shut the platform temporarily after the appearance of unauthorized, and false, reports citing military reverses for rebels in Syria.”

The url for Reuters Opinion section has been down for more than one week and there are a variety of screwy things going on with the website. For instance, a click on “Tales From the Trail” still gets you nowhere.

Columns from Shafer are still running, just in another area of the site. Most recently he had a story yesterday on the usefulness of presidential conventions. In short, he doesn’t think they’re that useful — “Yes, the news-to-blather ratio is huge,” he writes. He also tells readers it’s okay to not watch at all: “Go ahead and scan the newspaper and Web accounts of the event if you must, but feel free to watch something else on TV.”

For now Shafer’s work is most easily found by typing in his name — other attempts just result in yanking out your hair follicles and PTSD tremors from navigating WaPo‘s website.

Kurtz on Magical Self-Pimp Tour of ‘Reliable Sources’

Howard Kurtz, the Daily Beast‘s Washington bureau chief and host of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” may be the worst offender in D.C. when it comes to promoting his own show and the flattering comments he gets on Twitter. He seems to have gotten into a four-tweet routine, two pre-show and two post-show. Observe.

  • An NBC release announced, “According to Nielsen Media Research data, ‘NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams’ was the most-watched network evening newscast during the week of October 8-12, 2007.”

  • An ABC release announced, “For the twenty-third time in twenty-five weeks, ‘World News with Charles Gibson’ was the most-watched evening newscast among Adults 25-54.”

  • Reuters reports, “Gossip is more powerful than truth, a study showed on Monday, suggesting people believe what they hear through the grapevine even if they have evidence to the contrary.”

  • Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez doesn’t like reporters either.

  • Newsday reports, “How much is Cablevision Systems Corp. — the owner of the Knicks, Rangers, Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall — really worth? Maybe more than the $22 billion the founding Dolan family is willing to pay to take the company private, according several shareholders and advisory companies. The total includes the $10.6-billion purchase price and the assumption of debt.”

  • Bloomberg reports, “Broadcasters plan to spend $697 million to educate television viewers about a shift in 2009 to digital broadcasting. Members of the National Association of Broadcasters, including the major television networks, will participate in the campaign, the Washington-based trade group said today in a statement distributed by e-mail.”

  • New York Times’ TV Decoder reports, “The ‘big four’ television networks are continuing to lose audience share. Nielsen Media Research released the ‘live plus seven day’ ratings for premiere week today. The numbers include seven days of DVR playback and show that DVRs are stopping some, but not all, of the viewership erosion.”

  • Multichannel.com reports, “Nearly 16% of American households who use the Internet watch television broadcasts online, according to a report released Monday by The Conference Board and TNS.”

  • San Francisco Chronicle reports, “Seventy percent of the 18- to 34-year-olds watching Current TV are noodling around on their laptops at the same time.”

  • Providence Journal reports, “The independent newspaper company that Belo Corp., of Texas, plans to establish early next year could have one of the most robust balance sheets in the business.   • Bmighty.com reports, “The Conference Board says that this year, more people looked for jobs online in the newspaper — 73% to 65%. Just two years ago, those percentages were pretty much reversed.”
