Byers’ NYT story faces Twitter backlash– Politico media reporter Dylan Byers‘ piece on NYT Executive Editor Jill Abramson sparked a debate Wednesday on whether the story was sexist in nature. HuffPost‘s Jack Mirkinson wrote a story rounding up some of the negative reaction to it headlined, “Jill Abramson: ‘Very Unpopular’ Or Just Doing Her Job?” Byers’ story includes an insider account wherein Abramson snapped at an editor to leave in the middle of a meeting and change a photo that was on NYT‘s website. Editor-in-Chief of Guardian U.S. Janine Gibson mocked it. “Spent the first hour of the day apologising to [staff writer] Maraithe Thomas for that time I asked her to change the front page pic a bit brusquely,” she tweeted. “This is the most non-story, story I’ve read in a while,” tweeted CQ Roll Call‘s Emily Cahn, linking to Byers’ story. “People at any major, large company will complain about leader. If it affected quality, it’s a story. NYT won 4 Pulitzers…”

A Koch’d Los Angeles Times, isn’t necessarily a conservative Los Angeles Times– There’s buzz circulating that the conservative Koch brothers are considering purchasing several newspapers around the country, including the Los Angeles Times. Naturally, it has some journalists suspicious, including WaPo‘s Harold Meyerson, that the Times and the others will become out of control right-wing publications. Not so fast, says The Atlantic‘s Garance Franke-Ruta. “There are several reasons regional newspapers are an awkward fit for anyone looking to counter-program what they see as liberal bias in the news media,” she writes. “The main reason is that all major U.S. newspapers are based in cities.” Franke-Ruta argues that big newspapers are subject to the culture of the cities they’re based in. People who live in cities tend to be progressive, or at least comfortable with with the concept, and the papers, by geographical necessity, have to hire those people. The readers who buy the papers in those cities are no different. If the Times is suddenly an overtly conservative paper, will Los Angeles residents continue to buy it?

Does Fox News have a “new” anchor you’ve never heard of?– WaPo‘s Aaron Blake wrote an item Wednesday about an interview on Fox Business featuring Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). The anchor of the segment was identified as “New Cavuto.” Who? Must be a new host. But a review of the clip shows it was actually longtime anchor Neil Cavuto. That’s unfortunate. A new, and perhaps improved, Cavuto may be just the thing the fledgling Fox Business channel needs. Maybe a “Neat Cavuto.” Or a “Notable Cavuto.” A “Noble Cavuto”? Just Neil for now.

Lewis, who is Christian, writes in his column Friday that national newsrooms “should at least have a few journalists hanging around who share — or at least, aren’t hostile to — the Christian faith.” He says it would help the newsrooms “understand America,” where most people identify as Christians. A recent obituary of a former NYT reporter who was Christian and reports on a Philadelphia doctor’s extreme abortion practices inspired Lewis’ column.

Lack of diversity in the news industry is well documented, whether on race, sexuality, gender or religion. But what’s often missing is an explanation as to why an increase in diversity would lead media outlets to “understand America.” Would more Christians in a newsroom lead to different story selection? Would a Christian reporter’s story on the stock market have a different perspective than a reporter who considers himself more secular or even Jewish? What about Muslim? It’s possible to be both Christian and live a secular life in the workplace, which is something Lewis doesn’t acknowledge in the piece. So why more Christians?

“Too many Jews?” asked Gawker‘s John Cook on Twitter. “Because there are too many non-Christians?” asked Politico‘s Glenn Thrush. “I love these periodic calls for affirmative action for the religious majority,” tweeted The Atlantic‘s Garance Franke-Ruta.

“I never said newsrooms shouldn’t be diverse,” Lewis defended himself to FishbowlDC. “I’m actually making an argument in favor of diversity.”

Writer who covered butt chugging moves onto guns

Former Daily Caller writer Jeff Winkler, who previously wrote about butt chugging (it’s just how it sounds, but worse) for Vice Magazine, now brings us a story about guns for The New Republic. His mission? To find New Yorkers moving to Texas for easier gun laws. Specifically, Winkler, now a writer in Austin, wanted to find people who had answered the call of Texas AG Greg Abbott, whose online ad read: “Keep your guns, come to Texas.” The task wasn’t simple, but Winkler found Craigslist useful in his reporting. An excerpt:

“No commentator, sane or otherwise (they’re all crazy), thinks the migration is due to lax gun laws. Yet, with thousands of people making the move, at least a few of them had to be packing their bags in order to freely pack heat. Say hello to Taegan Goddard, founder of publisher of Political Wire. He owns and operates the site, while advertising is sold by CQ Roll Call. He grew up in Hartford, Conn. and graduated from Vassar with a major in economics followed by a public policy degree from Harvard. “I’m not even sure I’m a journalist now,” Goddard says with a brief chuckle. “I’m not even sure what journalist is. If it’s that I try to figure out what’s going and tell people, then I guess I am.” People tend to get confused by Goddard’s politics in that he has worked for a Democrat, a Republican and an Independent. He likes that he gets accused of being a Republican and a Communist. Goddard’s job doesn’t feel like work. “It’s almost what I’d do anyway,” he said. “I thoroughly love it.” Where does he work? “Absolutely everywhere,” he said. “One of the worst things is that it’s 24/7,  but one of the best is you can be anywhere.” Most of the time he’s in his study.

If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be? No doubt about it: Coca Cola.

How often do you Google yourself? Constantly, thanks to Google Alerts.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to an editor (or vice versa)? I got in a heated argument with a New York Times editor over online journalism, which ended with me saying I looked forward to reading your newspaper on the bottom of a pet cage.

What’s the best advice you ever received in the course of your career? An old boss once told me to always remember that a monkey can do 95 percent of any job.

Who is your favorite working journalist? Frank Rich is brilliant.

Do you have a favorite word? Absolutely

Say hello to The Atlantic‘s Garance Franke-Ruta. By far the most challenging thing to tackle about her is her complex name. “A lot of it has to do with pronunciations,” Garance (pronounced Gaaarohnse) said in a phone call. “A lot of people  think there’s a “tz” at the end instead of a “ce.” Sometimes people resort to calling her “G” or “GFR.” Still, others have had trouble with the second syllable of her first name. And believe it or not, there’s another Garance in journalism. She’s an AP writer in California. Weirder still, the two Garances have crossed paths — in college and at WaPo. Franke-Ruta was a reporter there and Garance Burke was an intern before Franke-Ruta arrived. “For awhile people were having trouble sending me email,” she said. “Because it was going to the other Garance.” The reporter has worked at a number of Washington publications that include NJ, TNR, WCP, The American Prospect and WaPo. In December she made the move to The Atlantic. Getting back to that unusual name, Franke-Ruta is named for a character in a French film from the 1940s called Les Enfants du Paradis. No, she’s not French. But she was born in Cavaillon, France and lived there until about two months of age. What does she think o her own name and does she think the film fairly represents her? “I have seen the movie. It’s very long,” she said. “It’s a classic. And it’s very long. It’s not a name I’ll probably pass on. Let’s put it that way.”

If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be?  A Mexican Coke in one of those little glass bottles.

How often do you Google yourself?  Almost never. I have Google Alerts on my name though so I can be pointlessly notified every time I tweet see who’s picking up my items, if there’s anything I need to respond to, stay attuned to the conversation, etc.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to an editor (or vice versa)? I had one editor who was a screamer, and another who used to floss his teeth while meeting, so it was more how they said things. Both smart men though.

Who is your favorite working journalist? I admire the work of so many different newspaper, magazine, and online journalists who are doing so many different sorts of things  – from Dan Balz to Ryan Lizza to Alexis Madrigal to Andy Carvin to the gang behind The Awl, which has had really terrific coverage of what’s going down in Madison — that it is hard to pick just one. Journalism is many different kinds of things these days, many in the midst of evolving. I’ll just say, because it’s an easier call, that of all the chatty television show hosts, Rachel Maddow is most fun to watch, perhaps because everything about her emergence as a major television personality has been unexpected and she still does things differently.

Do you have a favorite word?  I never use this one but I just love that it exists. “Anstandsrestchen” is the German word for the thing left on the plate out of politeness (you know, when no one wants to be the person to take the last of something). Because of course the Germans have a word for that.

Who would you rather have dinner with – First Lady Michelle Obama or Bestselling Author and former V.P. candidate Sarah Palin? Sarah Palin, no contest. A) She’d be more likely to make news and B) I’m kind of fascinated by her.

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? Standard BB ring.

When did you last cry and why? Tuesday morning, when I found out Rev. Peter Gomes died. He was one of a kind.
