WTF? With Matt Lewis

Matt Lewis of The Daily Caller and more recently of The Week keeps his readers guessing “WTF?” and that’s why we like him. One day he’s dissecting the history of angels and comparing them to journalists. The next he’s praising the Redskins’ RG3. The next he’s suggest Republicans adopt “fresh” ideas like returning back to ideology espoused by former President George W. Bush.

Today Lewis does a few things under a column headlined “The working class epidemic of demoralization.” First, Lewis bemoans the “disconnect” between coastal elites and everyone else in “flyover” country.

That’s a real problem worthy of looking into. While reading, we looked forward to what thoughts or insight Lewis might have to share on the matter. But before we knew it, Lewis had shifted into commentary about the destructive behavior poor people engage in while imitating the rich.

An excerpt, which uses MTV programming as a guide… continued…

WTF? With Matt Lewis

When The Daily Caller‘s Matt Lewis wrote on election night that the GOP needed “some fresh ideas,” he apparently meant old ideas that still stink. In his latest column for The Week, Lewis says “Republicans ought to take a second look at George W. Bush‘s political philosophy.”

During his presidency, Bush was known to label his political views as “compassionate conservatism,” characterized by promoting the helping of others while encouraging accountability (ie. No Child Left Behind).

“Of course, they wouldn’t have to call it compassionate conservatism,” Lewis reasons, “That brand is obviously tarnished. But it is an uplifting mission statement to serve as a feel-good umbrella for their other policy ideas.”

Lewis says it’s a winning philosophy that would appeal to both “the urban hipster” and “the guy in rural Ohio.” Wow, really? … continued…

WHCA Board Considers Taking Pool Reports from WH

FishbowlDC Exclusive:The White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) board late last month discussed a proposal to post pool reports written by reporters on its own website, seizing control from the White House, which has long distributed the reports.

The issue has been a dicey one over the years. During the George W. Bush administration, the White House refused to say who was on the distribution list of more than 1,000, which included lobbyists and government officials across town.

Why, board members asked during the meeting, do the pool reports still go through the filter of the White House press office? White House veteran George Condon of Congress Daily, called to appear because of his knowledge on the issue, explained that it started with the Eisenhower administration when poolers used carbon paper. It was simply faster to have the official White House stenographers help get the information out.

But the practice continued into the Internet age, and, despite the ease of group mailing, reporters traveling in a tight pool with the president still send their reports directly to the White House, which forwards them to reporters.

The board discussed whether it would be feasible to post pool reports on the WHCA website for reporters to access, which means the WHCA — not the White House — would decide who can view them. No decision was made, but the board agreed to have an association “town hall” to discuss how to change the pool report guidelines.

One little tidbit that emerged during the meeting also involved the pool, but concerned who should remain in the small group in the case of a national emergency.

Condon noted that on 9/11, the Bush White House shrunk the press pool from 12 members to five, causing controversy. When that happened, former President Bill Clinton apparently called Ron Fournier of the AP to reveal that the Bush WH had invoked the “nuclear bunker pool.”

Nobody in the press had heard of such a special pool and nothing ever came of it. Condon suggested outlining guidelines before the next crisis.

The WHCA, which voted to raise the cost of the annual dinner to $225 per seat, also decided to continue its tradition of having a holiday party.

It appears there may be more cuts looming at NBC News- NYO reports another round of voluntary buyouts are being offered. What will that mean for the DC bureau?

More Statements On Cronkite’s Passing From Around Town, Country

Former President George W. Bush: “Walter Cronkite was an icon of American journalism who shaped his profession in countless ways during his decades on the air. Tonight, his family is in our thoughts and prayers.”

Former President George H.W. Bush: “Barbara and I join the nation in mourning the passing of Walter Cronkite. As a pioneer in television journalism, he was a towering, respected figure. Many Americans heard it from Walter first that President Kennedy had died, or that man had walked on the moon. He is already missed.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: “Walter Cronkite was the face and voice of American journalism for generations. A giant in his field, he set the standard for news even today: fair and thorough.

“From the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, to the war in Vietnam, to the landing on the moon 40 years ago next week, Walter Cronkite delivered the news and provided trusted commentary on the events that shaped our history. Like millions of Americans, he was a fixture in my home.

“Let us honor the legacy of Walter Cronkite by remembering the essential role that a free press plays in our democracy, and by protecting the right of journalists to report the news.”

Senator John McCain: “I’m saddened to learn of the passing of Walter Cronkite – one of the most influential newsmen of our time. I will never forget our memorable visit together to Hanoi on the 10th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.”

Statements from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Neil Armstrong also after the jump…

The Boston Globe union has set a date to vote on a new contract, though no agreement has been met with the newspaper’s owner, NYT.

Long Live the Nightly News! Fortune: Despite a steady erosion in their collective audience and an aging viewership, the big three nightly newscasts are hardly dead.
Vice President Joe Biden just isn’t pulling the ratings for Sunday shows that he used to.
WEST WING REPORTAGE

Daily Finance “Obama takes on Fox News, loses“: When is Barack Obama going to learn that presidents shouldn’t play press critic? It didn’t work for Richard Nixon. It didn’t work for Bill Clinton or George W. Bush. It didn’t help John McCain win the White House, and it won’t help Obama, who vented his frustration with Fox News Wednesday.

CNN’s keeping tabs on WH Press Secretary Robert Gibbs‘ tardiness. “Gibbs was a total of 13 hours and 46 minutes late to his own press briefings in the month of May alone. Of the 19 briefings held by Gibbs in May, the White House officially pushed the scheduled start time back 14 times (although: one time they actually made it earlier.) That averages out to a delay of roughly 28 minutes a day – a total of 8 hours and 50 minutes for the month.”

There was speculation yesterday that President Obama would make a surprise appearance in Gibbs’ daily press briefing. When he didn’t, a few reporters were left disappointed, including CBS’ Mark Knoller. Read through here.

Also at the WH yesterday- Bob Woodward. Mike Memoli tweets his run-in.

Cable By The Numbers

According to reports released by ThinkProgress…

2 to 1: Appearances by Republican congressmen on the cablers two weeks ago to discuss the House stimulus package as compared to their Democratic counterparts (51 Republican appearances, 26 Democrat)

75: Appearances by Democrats in week two of the stimulus debate, as compared to 41 Republicans

ThinkProgress tallied interview segments about the stimulus on CNBC, Fox Business, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC for three-day periods. Fox News had the closest balance in the first week of stimulus coverage, 8 Republican appearances and 6 Democrats, but in week two “fair and balanced” didn’t ring quite as true- 24 Republicans and only 11 Democrats on FNC.

Supposedly liberal, MSNBC favored Republicans in that first week of coverage 15 to 9, but in week two, MSNBC was the only cable network to host more Democratic members than Republican (17 Dems, 12 GOP).

What press Secretary Robert Gibbs has to say and growing FNC ratings after the jump…
