Oops! National Review‘s Greg Pollowitz Fooled By Fake, Viral Sandy Photograph

Several photos gravitated around the Internet on Monday that were alleged to be stunning images of Hurricane Sandy. Turned out many weren’t real and people were tricked. One of whom was National Review‘s Greg Pollowitz.

Pollowitz posted a photo on National Review yesterday of soldiers in the rain guarding Arlington Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “Photo of U.S. Marines guarding the Tomb of the Unknowns from [Monday],” he wrote. The photo is actually from September and the guards are not marines. They’re referred to as Tomb Sentinels or Tomb Guards.

Oddly, in his post, Pollowitz linked to an ABC News article that explained when the photograph was taken and who was in it. He went with the false description anyway.

We’ve reached out to Pollowitz for comment.

Memo to CNN: Free Ali Velshi!

Throughout the relentless storm last night, reporters in Washington and beyond expressed deep concern for CNN’s breakout star, Ali Velshi, who spent much of the day and night knee and waist deep in water. On his birthday, no less. At one point shirtless pranksters joined him in the water. TVNewser has the video. Let’s hope the network gave him a change of clothes.

“Ali, I’m glad to see you in one piece, quiet frankly,” remarked CNN’s Soledad O’Brien to Velshi early this morning in an interview with the correspondent who appeared to be in the exact outfit he wore last night — dark sports pants, red pullover, sneakers, baseball cap.

“CNN, please let Ali Velshi live.” — HuffPost‘s Sam Stein.

“I’m going to collect donations to help Ali Velshi with what is undoubtedly a serious case of swamp foot. #aliisahero#10hoursinthewater.” — Will Cain, CNN Contributor and columnist for TheBlaze.com.

“Why is CNN having Ali Velshi standing in the middle of a barren intersection?” — CNBC and NYT‘s John Harwood.

“Dear CNN, et al: get your reporters out of the water. You look stupid.” — NationalReviewOnline Contributor Greg Pollowitz.

“Now CNN is making Ali Velshi stand in the hurricane during a commercial break so they can come back to him afterwards. Amazing.” — Washington City Paper Editor Mike Madden at 4:14 p.m. At 10:30 p.m. Madden added, “CNN, seriously. You have tortured Ali Velshi enough. Whatever he’s done, he will never do it again. Let him go inside.”

“I’ve concluded that Ali Velshi has the world’s strongest legs, and a brilliant sound man.” — CNN’s Piers Morgan.

“ALI WE GET IT. IT’S BAD OUT THERE.” — Politico‘s Kate Nocera (who couldn’t get away from all-caps messages throughout the night.)

“I really want to hear Chris Christie’s reaction to what Ali Velshi is doing right now.” — NPR Elections Producer Arnie Seipel.

“Amazing reporting by Ali Velshi from Atlantic City under terrible conditions. (It’s also his birthday.)” — CNN Senior Digital Producer Steve Krakauer.

“Why can’t CNN just put a hologram of Ali Velshi in the middle of all that water?” — Blake Hounshell, managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine.

“I’ve never had a desire to stand in the middle of a storm to tell someone else not to come outside. I can do that from a studio! LOL” — CNN Contributor Roland Martin.

Gawker Editor Stirs Pot With Pedophilia Post

Over the weekend Gawker published an article by Cord Jefferson exploring the psychological ins and outs of pedophilia. The story, headlined “Born This Way: Sympathy and Science for Those Who Want to Have Sex with Children,” used language highly graphic in nature to describe real-life sexual experiences between adults and children. Naturally, reaction to the piece was strong, many arguing that the story offered too-sympathetic a look at pedophilia.

Jefferson told FBDC that since the backlash, he had “a two-hour phone chat” with a female editor he respects. “We talked about a lot, but specifically the power of language and why the words I chose for that piece were so hurtful to so many,” he said.

The Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote a response to Jefferson’s piece, charging Gawker with “soft-pedaling child-rape.” Coates wrote that he “can’t really understand how one writes that a 20-year old man ‘began a sexual relationship’ with a seven year old.” He argued that all references to “a sexual relationship” between an adult and a child should have been regarded as “rape.”

FNC contributor Kirsten Powers called the story “super troubling.”

As noted by Twitchy, the story was passed around on Twitter like a hot potato and soon the sarcastic hashtag “#GawkersNextArticle” was created. “The Klan: An Appreciation,” GOP media strategist Rick Wilson suggested. National Review‘s Greg Pollowitz recommended “How to Read 50 Shades of Gray to your Kids.”

Jefferson responded to criticism he received in a post on his Tumblr. “Using the words ‘rape’ or ‘molest’ in place of ‘sex’ is an interesting argument that, I’ll admit, I didn’t think a whole lot about while writing the piece,” Cord wrote. “My default thinking is that if you’re talking about ‘sex’ between a grown man and a prepubescent child, it should be obvious that it’s not consensual.”

He also posted an anonymous comment he received on the story that said “Thanks for the trigger, a**hole.” A “trigger” is a disclaimer that typically appears at the top of an article or other content that serves as a warning to readers of graphic material they may be about to experience.

“The trigger warning thing is actually something I brought up to my editors,” Jefferson wrote. “I directly asked if we should include one at the top of the piece, and we thought about it for a few minutes. Our final decision was that an article with “People Who Want to Have Sex with Children” in the headline was trigger enough.”

Cord didn’t come away from the criticism without learning something. To one comment on his post that questioned the word choices in the story, Jefferson said he could “honestly say you’ve enlightened me.”

UPDATE: Jefferson told us “several other friends and strangers” who say they were either raped or molested have offered criticisms on his piece. “[I]t’s going to be a while before I can process those enough to want to talk about them publicly,” he said. “Nevertheless, all the lessons I’ve been given and sought out in the past few days have been valuable and transformational, and I’m sorry for the pain I caused.”

He said, however, he would write the story again. “I’ve had several self-professed celibate pedophiles contact me to say that my piece made them feel less ashamed about themselves and more interested in getting the help they need. I’m happy for that. I’m just sorry that I hurt people in an effort to help others.”

CNN’s Hilary Rosen: ‘I am a Sea of Calm’

In case you thought you were having night terrors last night, CNN Democratic Commentator and SKDKnickerbocker Managing Director Hilary Rosen really did go off on would-be first lady Ann Romney in a late-night Twitter rant. Soon enough the Twittersphere exploded and Romney jumped in to defend herself. “I am a sea of calm in the storm,” Rosen wrote to FishbowlDC just after midnight after we asked how she was faring. The fire ignited on “AC360″ Wednesday night when Rosen said she “wished Mitt Romney wasn’t using his wife as a guide to women’s economic struggles because she had never worked a day in her life.”

President Obama‘s top campaign advisor David Axelrod wasn’t pleased. He wrote on Twitter, “Disappointed in Hilary Rosen’s comments about Ann Romney. They were inappropriate and offensive.” And Jim Messina, Obama’s campaign manager, concurred: “I couldn’t disagree w/Hilary Rosen any more strongly. Her comments were wrong+family should be off limits. She shld apologize.” In a strange twist to this already odd evening, at 11:15 p.m. Rosen published a story on HuffPost. Suffice it to say Rosen, who cares for two children by herself, doesn’t have horses or an elevator in her home.

It all began innocently enough…

7:46 p.m. I’ll be on @AC360 with @andersoncooper tonight at 8:30 on Romney and the women’s vote. Does he even know what Lily Ledbetter Act is? #CNN

Things start to heat up.

9:55 p.m. When I said @AC360 Ann Romney never worked I meant she never had to care for her kids AND earn a paycheck like MOST American women! #Truth

9:59 p.m.: Mitt Romney is running for President, not Ann. He hired only 10%women at Bain; now makes up false concern for women’s economic struggle.

She trys to make nice. A little.

10:09 p.m.: I’ve nothing against @AnnRomney. I just don’t want Mitt using her as an expert on women struggling $ to support their family. She isn’t.

Her harsh conclusion…

10:11 p.m. @donnapt My point is that he should stop saying that she is his guide to women’s economic problems. She doesn’t have any. #IsntItObvious?

It’s not over. Things turn weird as she welcomes Ann to Twitter…

10:46 p.m. Ann Romney joins Twitter and issues her first and only message of the night: “I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys. Believe me, it was hard work.” By 11:46 Ann Romney had 4, 265 followers.

10:56 p.m. “@AnnDRomney I am raising children too. But most young American women HAVE to BOTH earn a living AND raise children. You know that don’t u?”

11:02 p.m. @AnnDRomney Please know, I admire you. But your husband shouldn’t say you are his expert on women and the economy. #HeNeedsMore

11:06 p.m. Oh and @AnnDRomney welcome to Twitter. You will find it a very exhilarating and often unforgiving place!

11:15 p.m. Rosen publishes a story on HuffPost. She doesn’t apologize.

The backlash from the right was swift…

“According to Leftist rules: Every Democrat on television this week should be asked if they agree with Hilary Rosen.” — Lee Doren, Washington D.C. author of Please Enroll Responsibly.

@SalaciousSully: “Honestly, this @hilaryr broad MUST work for Romney. His support has gone up hugely in the past few hours because of her!” (Former Right Girl who describes herself as “the classiest asshole you’ve ever seen.”)

Members of the Media React

“Fact that Axelrod repudiated Hilary Rosen CNN attack on Ann Romney says it all: HR is not an Obama advisor but is biz partner of one.” — HuffPost‘s Howard Fineman.

Heckuva job, Hil.”

HuffPost‘s Sam Stein took a decidedly lighthearted tone in his reaction: “History will show that the election was lost tonight by Hilary Rosen.”

And Reuters‘ Sam Youngman‘s reaction was of a similar vein: “Upside of today’s battle in the war for women? Easy reminder to call mom.”

Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day

RUNNING WITH THE PACK: “This is what pack journalism looks like. Last Romney rally before New Hampshire votes.” — NPR White House Correspondent Ari Shapiro.

Remembering Blankley

“Tony Blankley was a kind, brilliant, engaging, family-focused, generous, faithful, fascinating man. I pray for his soul and his family.” — TWT Senior Opinion Writer Emily Miller.

Note to reporter: Tsongas or Saungus?

“More @newtgingrich on Romney: ‘Maybe like Saungus who got 37% in ’92 and lost to Clinton who got 24% because he couldn’t meet expectations.” — NBC News Campaign embed reporter Alexandra Moe. A few hours later, she offered this inexplicable partial tweet…”And @newtgingrich just s…” She eventually concluded, “And @newtgingrich just went out a back door avoiding Ron Paul ppl for the second time tonight while the media waited for him…#decision2012.” Carry on, Alexandra.

Question to ponder

“Does retweeting everything on your beat–essentially being all [beat] news to everyone–make you feel empty inside? Discuss!” — Reason Mag’s Mike Riggs.

Important assignment: Involves Beyonce

“So my mom gets call waiting tonight from her sister; there’s an urgent rumor she wants me to investigate: ‘Beyonce.Surrogate. Any truth?’” — Washington freelancer Moe Tkacik.

Uh Oh.

“Just drove to Manchester to meet @Jamie_Weinstein and others but realized they meant Nashua.” — The Daily Caller‘s Alex Pappas.

TV Watchers

“Real Housewives of Atlanta is so low-rent. @Bravotv needs to eliminate it from the franchise and give it a different name.” — social media journalist Claritza Jimenez.

“The Bachelor gave a rose to the lesbian again. He really is as dumb as he looks.” — TWT‘s Miller.

Convo Between Two Journos

Fox News Contributor Dana Perino: “Every ‘green product’ I have to live with stinks. Lighting is awful & constantly pops. Washer/dryer a disaster. Enviro-paint looks awful.”

National Review Online Contributor Greg Pollowitz: “Front loading washer is the worst, and the dryer saves energy by not fully drying the clothes #thankyoualgore”

Unnecessary Tweet of the Day

“Shouldn’t Diet Dr. Pepper just be called Mr. Pepper?” — Roll Call‘s Ryan Teague Beckwith.

Notice to cable repairmen: Don’t be late!

“Who actually likes to fire people? Even in context it’s weird. I get annoyed at late cable repairmen, maybe.” — Slate’s Dave Weigel. He’s referencing Romney who remarked, “I like being able to fire people.”

Peter Ogburn contributed to this report.

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY

The price of attending a Washington gala: You must pet weird animals and pose for pictures. Robert Redford and Gloria Reuben pet a wallaby held by National Wildlife Federation Naturalist Dave Mizejewski, while NWF President Larry Schweiger watches at NWF’s 75th Anniversary Gala in Washington last night. Photo Credit: Leslie Kossoff.

Rachel Ray and mmmm chocolate milk

“Parents, politicians and principals. Everybody is trying everything they can think of, throwing pebbles into the pot to try and make stone soup out of getting our kids a little healthier. Change has to come out of conversation. It can’t come out of finger wagging or going to any extreme. I don’t think that chocolate milk is necessarily the culprit.” — Rachel Ray on The Joy Behar Show last night on the no chocolate milk policy being implemented in some schools.

Insulted journo

“I’m going on #datenight with my wife and she called me swarthy. #racist? on the Ben Moore color wheel, I’m in the reds, but not Crist orange.” – NationalReviewOnline.com Contributor Greg Pollowitz in a Wednesday tweet.

ABC7′s Tschida: the foot model

“Tennis tears up my feet. but podiatrist went at me with razor and clipper. now cant stop admiring my toes. should be modeling sandals.” — ABC7′s Stephen Tschida in an April 12 tweet. In other vital Tschida news, he’s pleased with our Separated at Birth choices for him from yesterday, which include Jon Voight and Christopher Walken: “Hey I just remembered Jon Voight is Angelina Jolie’s father. I’m separated at birth from a guy with some good GENES!”

Trouble in Twitter paradise

“brianbeutler get off twitter, jerk” — Politico‘s Marin Cogan in a Wednesday tweet to TPM‘s Brian Beutler. We’re not sure if she was joking but a) we’ll get to the bottom of it and b) she doesn’t sound like she’s kidding.

Boy Bander turned Fashion Guru

“On MSNBC right now, the “dark suit plus green tie” madness has spread from Chuck Schumer to engulf Gene Sperling.” — Center for American Progress fellow and lefty blogger Matt Yglesias in a Wednesday tweet.

Misplaced affection

“Just signed an email to a communications person: ‘Love, Annie.’ #fail” — Slate‘s Annie Lowrey in a Wednesday tweet. She’s the girlfriend to the one and only WaPo’s Ezra Klein (huge FishbowlDC supporter).

David Corn employs Seinfeld-Trump metaphor

“Looking forward to new NBC fall show: “So You Wanna Be President?” Starring Donald Trump as “Donald Trump.” #itsaboutnothing.” — Mother Jones Washington Bureau Chief David Corn in a Wednesday tweet.

Unnecessary Tweet of the Day I

“Got sunburn driving with the top down today. Yes, I have a convertible.” — NatioanlReviewOnline.com‘s Jonah Goldberg in a Wednesday tweet. Noteworthy tweet that came in on the same day: “Just for the record if you really don’t like my tweets you can unfollow me. It’s not like I’m Charlie Sheen and you’re paying me or anything.”

Unnecessary Tweet of the Day II

“My 2yo has a dog and a bear. He refers to them as one entity “Doggybear”. It must go everywhere with him. Better than manbearpig.” — CNN Contributor and Red State scribe Erick Erickson in a Wednesday tweet. We don’t normally give a second award of this nature in one day, but today we figured what the hell?

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY

And the Worst-Sounding Breakfast Award goes to…

“Easy Sunday breakfast: Cook and drain some frozen peas. Thickly slice and cook bacon. Toss together with lots of salt and pepper. Done.” — Chef Ezra Klein in a Sunday tweet. Professor. Doctor. Blogger. What’s next? We’re not Food Network experts or anything, but this doesn’t sound so good, Ezzy. Maybe add fresh figs? (FYI: Klein moonlights for a food blog called the Internet Food Association. Last year he revealed that he was adding fresh figs to his diet.)

White House correspondent en route to Paris

“Woke up mid-flight to discover a napkin on my lap on which was scrawled “Kentucky 76-69″ Awesome!!!” — The Hill‘s White House Correspondent Sam Youngman in a weekend tweet on a flight to Paris.

Heads up GQ‘s Ana Marie Cox: Drinking Game Alert

“Libya drinking game. If Pres O says, “let me be clear,” turn off the tv and drink half-bottle of Jack.” — National Review Online‘s Greg Pollowitz in a Monday morning tweet. President Obama is scheduled to give an address on Libya tonight.

The Critic

“Missing from the NYT profile of Astoria, OR: It was the backdrop for Kindergarten Cop” — Politico Deputy Politics Editor Sara Libby in a Monday morning tweet. Most necessary part: “h/t Jonathan Martin.” Libby links to the piece here. (We h/t Libby of course…)

Journo loses her mother

“Still, in the wake of my mother’s death- rain feels more like tears than luck. So I went inside.” — TIME‘s Jay Newton-Small in a weekend tweet on the passing of her mother. She also wrote: “Guess it’s lucky. My father proposed to my mother during the monsoon. And I was born in a thunderstorm.” Our condolences to her.

Now this is dedication…

“Ha! I’ve used TBD so much in tweets that my iPhone corrected a typo to tbd. (Was trying to write “the.” Looks like I thumbed “tbe.”)” — TBD Community Engagement Director Steve Buttry in a Monday tweet.

Ever the observer…

“With the recession technically over, the New Yorker profiles Christian Louboutin. It’s a fun piece. Loubi practically profiles himself.” — The Daily Caller‘s “Daily Baller” Mike Riggs in a Monday morning tweet. (We thank Riggs for the excuse to run a photograph of beautiful shoes and note his expertise and ease with Loubi lingo.)

Fake Jim V. wants to know what the hell happened…

“Juicebox Mafia? James Hohmann still drinks Capri Sun totally non-ironically. Where’s our trend piece?” — FakeJimVandeHei in a Sunday tweet. To return to a dead PoliticoMouse is truly awful. Thank God FakeJimV is alive. Here he (or she) is referring to Politico‘s young whippersnapper James Hohmann, a former WaPo intern, in reaction to NYT‘s incredibly softball Sunday Style section piece on Boy Banders WaPo’s Klein, Slate‘s Dave Weigel etc… (More on the death of PoliticoMouse and that NYT Style story later…)

Why Gibbs shouldn’t take Facebook job….

While the rest of D.C. is commenting on former White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs‘ potential move to Facebook, WUSA’s Angie Goff throws a wet towel on the idea with this Monday morning tweet: “Researchers say Facebook could cause depression.” Goff’s story link hails from Fox News’s website, which runs an AP story today about how Facebook presents a “skewed view” about what’s really going on. Oh the irony…

Slate‘s Shafer makes a request

“Please subscribe to the NYT so I’ll have it to kick around.” — Slate media writer Jack Shafer in a weekend tweet.

D.C. journo mentality

“Actually having a weekend = long Sunday night of work. ” — WaPo Social Media Producer Katie Rogers in a weekend tweet.

NPR’s Inskeep in Disneyland karaoke hell

“At Disneyland: 6yr old too terrified to visit Haunted Mansion, so we stand in New Orleans hearing jazz band play Back Home Again in Indiana.” — NPR’s Steve Inskeep in a weekend tweet from Disneyland. He continues: “You haven’t lived until you step into House of Blues, adjacent to Disneyland, & discover it’s a karaoke bar with $18 drinks.” And this: “p.s. Karaoke singer now belting out “Dancing with Myself”- it may take between $36 and $54 to make this right.”

F&@# Smoking!

“I quit smoking almost exactly three years ago. It remains one of the best things I’ve done. Ever. Seriously, fuck smoking.” — Journalist, author, and media critic Craig Silverman in a weekend tweet. He writes the “Regret the Error” website and works for PBS Media Shift.

“Thanks to Politico for the reminder that it’s my father’s birthday.” — MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinksi this morning on “Morning Joe” in a silent shout-out to Mike Allen, who included it in this morning’s “Playbook.” Mika’s father, who often appears on the program, is Zbigniew Brzezinksi, former U.S. National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter.

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY

Charlie and the Goddess: From @CharlieSheen’s Twitter account, which now boasts 775,225 followers.

Charlie Sheen Fever

Many reporters in and around Washington were glued to their TV sets as we watched yet another round of Sheen’s “Sober Valley Village” on ABC’s 20/20 last night. This only left reporters ravenous for more, which we got this morning on NBC’s Today Show.

“I guess I shouldn’t be laughing my ass off, but I can’t help it — watching 20/20.” — Albuquerque Journal Washington Bureau Chief Michael Coleman in a Tuesday night tweet.

“Ok, ok I swear this is the last Charlie Sheen tweet of the week for me. This is hilarious. Live the Sheen Dream.” — NBC4 reporter Craig Melvin in a Tuesday night tweet.

“Hey @charliesheen, feel free to BCC me on reporter inquiry emails.” — Politico‘s Patrick Gavin in a double-edged tweet Tuesday night regarding both Sheen and the debacle between Rep. Darrell Issa‘s now fired flack Kurt Bardella and Politico and Bardella’s leaking emails to NYT’s Mark Leibovich for a book he’s writing on D.C. culture.

“Charlie Sheen has ruined Twitter.” — D.C. Attorney Kevin Reiss in a Tuesday night tweet.

Forget it. No one’s flipping the channel

“About to make an inaugural appearance on @gretawire shortly after 10:30. Tune in if you can.” — The Hill‘s Mike O’Brien pleading for people to watch him on TV Tuesday night right smack in the middle of the Sheen interview. Please.

In what may be our favorite tweet of Tuesday night…@FakeSantorum scolds former Salon Editor and now Editor-at-Large Joan Walsh for RT Sheen tweets: “@joanwalsh Is it even NECESSARY to RT Charlie Sheen tweets? Most of us are following at this point anyway.”

Waking up to Charlie, who has one speed: Go!

“Charlie Sheen said he would do no more interviews after yesterday. Now he’s back on the Today show. That lasted long.” — The Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz in a Wednesday morning tweet.

“Charlie Sheen is up! Keep in mind it is 4:30am in Los Angeles.” — WaPo‘s Jonathan Capehart in a Wednesday morning tweet.

“Dear @abc, @cnn, @abc, @nbc, @fox: Just. Say. No. No more Sheen, please.” — National Review Online‘s Greg Pollowitz in a Wednesday morning tweet.

“@mitchellreports I wanted to congratulate you personally but got intimidated by adoring mob surrounding you — see you soon.” — ABC News’s Jake Tapper in a Tuesday night tweet complimenting NBC’s Andrea Mitchell on winning an award at the National Press Foundation dinner that night. To which she replied, “@jaketapper big virtual hug and many thanks.” (A big virtual hug? Is Washington getting weird or what?) Tapper also gives love out to CNN’s Dana Bash: “Congrats to @DanaBashCNN on her #NPF Dirksen award and even more so for her pending baby!!!” (WSJ’s Brody Mullins, CNN’s Bash and NBC’s Mitchell all won Dirksen awards at the National Press Foundation dinner.)

Scribe suggests Bardella for Newt

“Newt needs to settle on just ONE megalomaniacal spokesman to overhype his candidacy to the press. Maybe Kurt Bardella?” — The Atlantic‘s Josh Green in a Tuesday night tweet.

NJ‘s “The Hotline” praises NYT for anti-Politico story

“For many reasons, @jeffzeleny and @shearm win the night.” — NJ “The Hotline’s” Executive Editor Reid Wilson in a Tuesday night tweet.
