Atlantic Announces New Hires, Promotions

Atlantic Editor-in-Chief James Bennet shot a memo to staff earlier today on behalf of him, Magazine Editor Scott Stossel, and Digital Editor Bob Cohn.

The purpose: To announce three hires and two internal moves.

The gist: The new editor of the Global Channel is WaPo‘s Olga Khazan. Elisa Glass joins as Art Director from Northern Virginia magazine. Now don’t f–k this up. Her name is EE-Lisa, pronounced like eBook. The third new hire is Esther Yi as associate editor. She was managing editor of Harvard’s The Crimson.

Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day — Happy New Year!

Travel Bitches

“If an airplane itself could have influenza, I’m on it.” — Politico‘s Dave Levinthal.

“Guy behind me on plane whacks me w/ suitcase as putting it in overhead. ‘Oh, sorry, I didn’t see you.’ Cuz I’m REALLY tiny #HappyNewYear.” — Joanne Bamberger, mommy blogger, former news anchor and author of “Mothers of Intention.”

And a travel apology…“Off to Paris for a bit. Nice to see you again, turkish air. Please carry me safely to my destination and sorry for any anxiety exhibited.” — Seyward Darby, freelancer, former online editor at TNR.

Press aide tells everyone to calm down

“Folks out there w/ crazy theories about what’s going on in House. All ridiculous. Just figuring out best path forward. Stay calm, carry on.” — House Maj. Leader Eric Cantor aide Rory Cooper during fiscal cliff negotiations.

For a gay old time…

“Two tickets for @GayPimp‘s #GayestWeekendOfAllTime this March in Florida? Yes, please.” — Syndicated columnist and Bullfight Strategies’ Karl Frisch.

Loesch takes a breather from laptop

“I’ve not opened my laptop since December 21st. Rare. Christmas vacation was lovely, but am ready to roll up the sleeves again.” — Ex-Breitbart.com’s Dana Loesch, who is now suing her former employer. Considering the backlash she received after the Sandy Hook shootings, in which she accused President Obama of playing politics with the deaths of children, this may have been a welcome relief.

Breitbart newbie on first-name basis with U.S. leaders

“In case anyone didn’t notice, we have now officially jumped off the fiscal cliff. Thanks John , Barry and Harry!” — Breitbart.com‘s Matthew Boyle, who hopes to one day fill the shoes of the late Andrew Breitbart.

A rare nod to CNN

“CNN is the only big cable news network doing fiscal cliff coverage right now. (I mean, if you’re a geek.)” — The Daily Caller and The Week‘s Matt Lewis on New Year’s Day.

And now, a New Year’s Eve observation on facial hair: “Back on CNN with the bearded ones–Wolf Blitzer and Robert Reich–at 8:30. All agree. No taxation of facial hair.” — Americans for Tax Reform Prez Grover Norquist.

An Assignment in Paradise

How magical does this assignment sound? An arctic explorer. A bestselling author. A brain scientist. Most importantly: La Jolla, Calif. in mid October.

The Atlantic magazine and the University of California San Diego’s annual event, “The Atlantic Meets the Pacific” will gather newsmakers on October 7-9, 2012, in beautiful La Jolla. This year’s event will delve deeply into the topic of disruptive technologies in media, energy, and health and will feature a series of headline interviews and panel discussions with newsmakers that include… continued…

The Atlantic Drops Editorial Sex Bomb

The Atlantic has managed to hire the smoldering Darhil Crooks away from Ebony Magazine. He will be the new creative director of The Atlantic, Editor-in-Chief James Bennet announced today. In this role, Crooks will oversee art direction in print, online, and on mobile and tablet devices. He will also oversee (with those eyes) the look of the outlet’s sister brands, The Atlantic Wire and Atlantic Cities.

“Darhil’s imagination and passion for ideas-driven work make him the perfect creative force for The Atlantic,” Bennet said in a release. “It’s asking a lot to hope for vision, exacting standards, a delight in taking risks, and a collaborative spirit all in one person, and we feel very lucky to have found that.”

His past…Crooks has been creative director of Ebony since January 2011. He oversaw the first cover-to-cover redesign in the title’e 66-year history. Before joining Ebony, Crooks was the art director of Esquire from 2005 to 2010. Before that, Crooks was the associate art director at Complex and then Men’s Journal. He began his design career at The Source.

There’s no doubt in our minds that Crooks could be January, June or July on any beefcake calendar.

Office partying gone awry

“Interesting to come back to one’s office, after entertaining one’s colleagues there for drinks, to discover someone’s belt on your desk.” — The Atlantic‘s Washington Editor James Bennet.

Huntsman daughters give up Politico

“Us girls have decided to give up politico.com for lent.” — Jon2012girls.

From the Dept. of Bad Ideas…

“I wish CPAC were on a cruise ship.” — Keder.

Journo hesitates on ‘vaginal penetration’ politics

“Old rule of politics (I think it was coined by Dirksen): if your bill can be described using words ‘vaginal penetration,’ best not to pursue.”– The New Yorker‘s Ryan Lizza.

In this disturbing video, DCRTV’s Dave Hughes (i.e. Washington’s biggest thief of a blogger) gets confused by his own thoughts about FBDC’s recent party. Observes FBDC’s Peter Ogburn: “Seriously. He can’t even keep up with his bullshit. In the same breath, he says no one with any credibility went to the party and then talks about how great WaPo‘s Erik Wemple is. F–k him a million times.” Peter later mumbled something about the way Dave puts on his socks at the beginning of the video. We think we heard this: “Looks like he’s just cleaning up after dismembering an underage prostitute.”

FishPoll: The Results. Was Politico Dave Cantanese‘s middle finger silver ring a hit or a miss at last week’s FishbowlDC party at Lost Society? A resounding 41.33 percent of you declared, “Yes, love it!.” A close second at 40 percent was, “No, rings should only be worn on a ring finger.”

Our resident ABC’s “The Bachelor” expert Emily Miller asks, “Did Kacie B lose the Bachelor over the dad who doesn’t drink, mother who wont let her live together before marriage or frizzy hair?” The Huntsman Daughters: “We wish we could tweet about The Bachelor right now. #nowords”

FNC’s Bret Baier lasts 48 hours minus tweeting

“Have a great weekend everyone! I am going to try to NOT tweet this wknd-let’s see if I can do it. Psyched to hang with the fam all wknd!!” — FNC’s Bret Baier, who was back on Monday to retweet moronic followers like this one: “My 4th tweet!
NJ and Politico to Host Twin Debriefings

It’s ugly time once again for NJ and Politico.

On Jan. 25 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. NJ, in conjunction with The Atlantic, will host a State of the Union debriefing at the National Press Club. The description: “Our interlocutors —James Bennet of The Atlantic, Ron Brownstein of National Journal, Jackie Calmes of the New York Times, and Major Garrett of National Journal in addition to our audience — will put Republican and Democratic Hill leadership in the hot seat to dissect the President’s address, assessing how President Obama’s case statement for the year will impact November’s outcomes.”

Meanwhile, on that very morning, Politico is also hosting a State of the Union debriefing. Theirs is being held at the W from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Politico‘s invitation doesn’t list their guests, but we have a feeling Mike Allen will be all over it. UPDATE: We checked in with Politico’s event staff. They’re not releasing their names just yet. Stay tuned…

Robert Wright, an award-winning author, scholar, journalist, and “web video pioneer” is going to work for The Atlantic as a senior editor. Beginning on January 3, 2012, he will join “Voices” on TheAtlantic.com, where he will have a dedicated blog and online presence.

“Bob is one of the sharpest and most original thinkers writing today,” said James Bennet, editor of The Atlantic in a release. “He can make sense of some of the most complex topics—faith, evolution, and politics, to name a few. He’s contributed stories to The Atlantic since 1988, when he wrote our cover story, ‘Did the Universe Just Happen?’ In recent years, Bob has emerged as a digital pioneer, and I’m thrilled he’ll now be adding his distinctive voice to our community of writers on TheAtlantic.com.”

Topics Wright will cover: politics, foreign policy, science, religion, and philosophy. There will also be video conversations, a format he popularized on the sometimes torturous Bloggingheads.tv: The release states, “The website, which Wright co-founded in 2005, was born out of a simple yet revolutionary idea: two people—from journalists to scientists to academics—in conversation on the day’s news.”

Wright’s most recent book is The Evolution of God, a NYT bestseller and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Still No Word From Detained Journos

Today marks the sixth day since a group of journalists, including a freelance writer for the Atlantic, were detained in Libya, and the White House is now demanding their release.

We told you last week that Atlantic writer Clare Morgana Gillis and three of her traveling companions, James Foley, a freelance contributor to GlobalPost.com, Spanish photographer Manu Brabo, and South African photographer Anton Hammerl, were detained by the Libyan government while reporting on the country’s civil war.

The Atlantic is reporting that at yesterday’s White House press briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney called for their release. He said the White House was “very aware” of the situation and that the State Department was also involved in trying to get the journalists released.

Mark Toner, the acting State Department spokesman, echoed Carney, but acknowledged the department is “limited in what [it] can do in Libya right now, except to make public appeals, like I can do right now.”

Though Libyan officials are denying that they have the detained journalists, Atlantic editor James Bennet said that “at least three of the missing journalists have been seen in official detention.”

Meanwhile, Gillis’ father in Connecticut tells the Hartford Courant that he hasn’t heard from his daughter since he was told she’d been detained. Even though he and his wife have been monitoring media reports, he said the hardships in getting information verified have been “very tension-producing.”

UPDATE: The Atlantic has confirmed that three of the journalists, Gillis, Foley, and Brabo, were seen at a detention center in Tripoli on Thursday, April 8. The magazine has not been able to confirm, however, that the South African photographer, Hammerl, was with them. Human Rights Watch initially concluded that all four had been detained together, but it now appears as though Hammerl’s disappearance is separate.

Atlantic Journo Detained in Libya

Clare Morgana Gillis, a writer for the Atlantic who has covered Libya extensively during the country’s civil war, has been detained by Qaddafi forces along with three other journalists.

Libyan rebels who witnessed the capture told the NYT that the journalists’ car was stopped at an intersection on Tuesday. They were taken into custody, their driver was let go, and the car was destroyed with a rocket-propelled grenade.

Traveling with Gillis were James Foley, a freelance contributor to GlobalPost.com, Spanish photographer Manu Brabo, and South African photographer Anton Hammerl.

According to the Atlantic, journalists captured in Libya in the past have been taken to Sirte, a Libyan city that houses several important government institutions, and eventually transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There, the Turkish embassy helps to negotiate the journalists’ release with the government of Libya. This was the case last month, when four NYT journalists were captured. They were released after six days.

Atlantic editor James Bennet said, “We appeal to the Libyan authorities for her immediate and safe release, and for that of the three other journalists detained with her.”

Read more here.

UPDATE: The four journalists are now believed to be in the possession of the Libyan government. Libyan officials and western journalists in the region believe they will be released.

Many are already calling it the most civilized party of the weekend. And that it seemed to be, though just being Friday night, it was a tough call to make so soon into Prom weekend.

The Atlantic Media Company owner David Bradley graciously welcomed guests to his posh home last night — some for pre-dinner cocktails only and the luckier among them for a fancy “Green” dinner poolside in the backyard. The event was catered by Susan Gage Caterers; the napkins were cloth.

It was no ordinary pool. Just behind it was a sizable fire bit, flames blazing on the warm summer evening.

No flashy superstars showed, though I was told Ricky Schroder was a guest last year and sat outside by the pool because he didn’t know anyone. Just insidery Washington media types like New York Social Diary’s Carol Joynt, The Atlantic’s Editor James Bennet, Yahoo News!’s Michael Calderone, NJ’s Editor-at-Large John Fox Sullivan hanging out amidst a well-dressed crowd in the driveway of Bradley’s home sipping cocktails. In the driveway were two shiny Audi’s – one bone white SUV and a silver sedan.

Some complained that the cars were getting in the way of the party. Other guests didn’t seem to notice or mind and used the cars for drink stands. (Confession: the white wine that FishbowlDC sampled was absolutely fantastic.)

Sullivan, a charmer, explained his at-large post at NJ: “That means I used to run the company and now I’m the elder statesman,” he said, explaining that he worked for Newsweek between 1970-75 and then came on as publisher of NJ. “I went from a very big pond to a very small pond.”

He acknowledged the major changes happening at NJ, including the layoffs of columnists and eight members of the editorial staff. He said the changes were for the best. “I’m more excited about our company now than I have been in four or five years,” he said.

I grilled Bennet on what he reads on a regular basis: NYT, WSJ, WaPo — the former NYT scribe reads the NYT most thoroughly. He also checks out a variety of Web sites all day long, but not too much or, he says, he won’t get anything done. His required reading list includes: Politico, Gawker, Memorandum, Atlantic Wire, Business Insider. Tweeters he enjoys include: Reuters’s Felix Salmon, WaPo’s Dave Weigel, Slate’s John Dickerson, CBS’s Mark Knoller and NYT business columnist David Carr.

“This is by far the most civilized event of the WHCD madness,” Joynt told Bradley in the driveway. “It’s a breath of fresh air.”

A guest striding by marveled, “What a glorious night!”

Bradley tried to tell Joynt that other parties were quite popular. Joynt jokingly dismissed him, saying, “Oh, they’re all mosh pits.”

A very gracious host, Bradley worked the pre-dinner driveway cocktail circuit fluidly. “It’s probably one of the smaller parties,” he acknowledged of his upscale gathering.

Bradley remarked that he’s not really up on who the big stars are these days – he said he could have Angelina Jolie to one side of him and Motion Picture Association’s late Jack Valenti to the other, and be far more acquainted with Valenti. “I’m 57, and as I get older, I have less understanding of who the it people are,” he said.
