Radley Balko to Pen WaPo Op-Ed Column

Radley Balko, a well-regarded criminal justice reporter and author, will write an opinion column for The Washington Post, according to an announcement from Fred Hiatt, Editorial Page Editor, and James Downie, Digital Opinions Editor. The column will focus on criminal justice, the drug war, and civil liberties. Balko comes to WaPo from The Huffington Post, and has previously worked as a senior editor at Reason magazine, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute and an opinion columnist for He has also written a book and was named 2011 Journalist of Year by the Los Angeles Press Club.

Balko starts work at WaPo in January. Join us in congratulating him on his new job!

TNR Makes Changes to Web Team and Announces Brand New Class of Reporter-Researchers

Today Editor Greg Veis announces two additions to its web team: Barron YoungSmith and Seyward Darby (pictured above) have been named deputy editors. Both are former reporter-researchers at the magazine.

Chloë Schama (below right) has replaced Darby as Assistant Managing Editor. Schama is a former Assistant Literary Editor at the magazine. She has an M.Phil. in English from Cambridge and graduated from Harvard. Schama is the author of Wild Romance: A Victorian Story of a Marriage, a Trial, and a Self-Made Woman (Walker Books 2010).

Laura Bennett (below left) has been named Assistant Literary Editor. She graduated from Yale where she was editor-in-chief of the The Yale Herald and the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship.
