Roll Call Loses Deputy Editor

FishbowlDC has confirmed that Erin Billings has resigned from her post at Roll Call. Currently the publication’s deputy editor, Billings has been with Roll Call for nearly a decade. She joined the paper’s team in 2001 as a staff writer and in 2004 became a senior writer covering House and Senate leadership. Prior to joining Roll Call, she worked as a statehouse reporter in Helena, Montana.

We understand that Billings has accepted another job but have not yet confirmed her next move. We’ll update as we find out more.

UPDATE: Billings is joining BGR Public Relations as vice president. BGR’s Jeff Birnbaum told FishbowlDC by email, “I could not be happier to have her here as we build a truly successful, Washington-based PR practice. She begins next month.”

Memo announcing Billings’s departure from Roll Call‘s Scott Montgomery after the jump.

TWT reporter Amanda Carpenter, who made frequent appearances on shows like CNN’s Reliable Sources is packing up and moving on from the troubled Times.

In a release this afternoon, Carpenter said:

“I’ve long admired Senator DeMint for the battles he’s waged to limit the size of government and decrease spending,” said Carpenter. “He is a relentless advocate for conservative principles. I’m thrilled to join his team and help promote those ideas.”

TWT Newsroom Panics After Solomon Resigns

Following the resignation of Washington Times Executive Editor John Solomon this evening, TWT Managing Editor David Jones addressed his staff via the below memo. Jones says that the newsroom will carry on “business as usual” but sources tell FishbowlDC that Times staff is expressing panic and fearing the worst.

One senior member of the newsroom suggested that it was time to look for a new job while a younger reporter told us, “we’re in trouble without John. Solomon had the vision, heart and had begun to make the Times a real force in Washington news media.”

Memo obtained by FishbowlDC:

From: David Jones

Date: November 12, 2009 6:47:30 PM EST

Subject: re john solomon

For those who were not in the newsroom for our impromptu meeting a few minutes ago, let me just say that we have been assured by Jonathan Slevin that despite the resignation of John Solomon, the company remains as committed as ever to keeping The Washington Times going as a robust multi-media company. He noted the huge strides we have all made over the past two years and asked Jeff Birnbaum and me to carry on “business as usual” while the new management carries out its review of all our operations. Slevin also expressed his respect and appreciation to the newsroom for your efforts of the past week, in which you all have continued to put out a first-rate product in a very difficult time.

ZING! Cillizza & Milbank: Backhanded & Rebranded

WaPo’s Chris Cillizza zinging TWT’s Jeff Birnbaum

FishbowlDC told you earlier this week about the debut of WaPo’s “Political Theater,” a new video series hosted by funnymen Dana Milbank and Chris Cillizza. While anxiously awaiting the series debut, it dawned on us that the tag “Political Theater” had already been snagged by The Washington Times for Joe Curl‘s well-read column.

FishbowlDC spoke with TWT’s Jeff Birnbaum who said:

“Although we are flattered by the imitation, Milbank and Cillizza are certainly creative enough to come up with an original name for their video series. We certainly hope that they will.”

Well, it seems that Milbank and Cillizza went back to the drawing board because the series debuted today under the title “Mouthpiece Theater.” The dynamic duo addressed the name game and their former WaPo colleague in today’s video saying, “we didn’t know about the column, because we don’t know anyone that actually reads The Washington Times.” ZING!!!

Check out Cillizza and Milbank’s “Mouthpiece Theater” here.

UPDATE: TWT’s Jeff Birnbaum just buzzed FishbowlDC to express his undying appreciation for Cillizza and Milbank’s creativity. Here’s what he told us:

“I knew Milbank and Cillizza were clever enough to come up with something creative and original — I’m really proud of them. I’m also very flattered by their apparent moustache-envy but would encourage them to grow real ones — I think they would both look great!”

He also offered some advice for the two pranksters:

“I would encourage them both to continue reading The Washington Times to avoid any embarrassment in the future.”

Hypocritical Theater? WaPo v. TWT

Remember the battle between ABCNews.com and WaPo.com for “The Fix?” In March of this year, ABCNews.com launched a new feature under the title already claimed by Chris Cillizza‘s blog.

Now it seems that WaPo is guilty of similar crimes against The Washington Times with the launch “Political Theater” – the bi-weekly video feature starring Dana Milbank and Chris Cillizza that was announced today. You see, the name “Political Theater” is already hard at work at TWT as the brand for Joe Curl‘s column.

When FishbowlDC spoke with TWT‘s Jeff Birnbaum this afternoon, he said “although we are flattered by the imitation, Milbank and Cillizza are certainly creative enough to come up with an original name for their video series. We certainly hope that they will.”

So riddle me this: is it hypocritical for Cillizza to use “Political Theater” after his scuffle with ABCNews.com for “The Fix?”
