Weiner Thrusts Himself Back in Spotlight

As former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) attempts to res-erect his political career by maybe running for Mayor of New York, this week he took the next step by bringing back his infamous Twitter account. As has been reported, he has changed the name. Instead of @repweiner he’s now @anthonyweiner. A clean slate, perhaps?

News of his new account is on the rise.

How did everyone handle it?

Weiner Gets Trumped

Always a class act, Donald Trump welcomed Weiner back with all the warmth of a frozen hotdog. “Pervert alert. <s style="text-decoration: none; color: #a0a0a0;">@</s>RepWeiner is back on twitter. All girls under the age of 18, block him immediately,” he wrote on Twitter.

AP Formalities

Even the AP couldn’t contain themselves and included the words “disgrace” and “lewd.” “Ex-NY Rep. Anthony Weiner back on Twitter 2 years after he was disgraced upon tweeting lewd photo of self.”

WaPo Flacidly Whacks Weiner

WaPo holds back in their tweet, writing only, “Weiner returns to Twitter.” But in their story they go into slight attack mode, writing, “Well, look who returned to the scene of the crime!” wrote The Reliable Source gossip column. And then they return to coy and lame, writing, “Weiner, now publicly mulling a political comeback with a possible bid for New York mayor, resigned from Congress two years ago after he — well, you remember.”

Weiner As One-Man Chippendales Show?

Unlike Washington, New York mags aren’t afraid to get in your face. Such as Gothamist, who writes, “Ladies, Anthony Weiner is Back on Twitter With A New Handle.” New York Magazine’s Intelligencer blog, meanwhile, writes, “Anthony Weiner Rejoins Twitter in Second-Worst Way Possible.” The story begins, “Yes, a crotch shot would be worse.” And PBS and NBC’s Jeff Greenfield goes all The Onion on us by writing, “NY Post Headline Writers Walk-Out After Editor Imposes Limit of 12 Genitalia-References Per Day on Anthony Weiner Stories.”

And the Strait-laced…

ABC World News: <s style="text-decoration: none; color: #a0a0a0;">“@</s>AnthonyWeiner Returns To Twitter Amid Mayoral Speculation”

Twitter Gets Dumb During Breaking News

Ask anyone who watches the news and they’ll admit that this wasn’t the finest hour for the media. CNN botching facts, NYPost putting pictures of innocent men on their cover, InfoWars saying this is a government coverup. OK, it’s a stretch to refer to the jerkoffs at InfoWars as “media,” but, suffice it to say, it got ugly out there.

Welcome to the wee hours of Friday morning, when a manhunt got underway to bring the alleged Boston bombers to justice, and Twitter tried to keep up. It was a great source of breaking news and information. It’s also an incredible way to spread total bullshit very quickly. In the midst of everything, some people just didn’t know WHAT the hell to tweet. We’ve rounded up choice comments that left us scratching our heads and wondering what the hell they were trying to say. continued…

Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day

Oh boy! POTUS might have worn a windbreaker?

“Your pooler only caught the slightest glimpse, but it looked like POTUS was wearing a windbreaker,” wrote Matt Viser of The Boston Globe in a strangely thorough weekend Pool Report full of mindless facts it appears he went to great lengths to obtain. “Pennsylvania Ave was shut down, with yellow tape holding back scores of onlookers in Lafayette Park. Some of those onlookers smiled and took photos. Others were protesters, shouting something your pooler couldn’t decipher (but thanks to the long lens of a pool photographer, it was possible to make out an anti-drone banner that depicted a drone striking a little family).”

In a later report… Viser went on (and on) about the various things he could do while holding at the Food Court in the Base Exchange. “Pool never spotted POTUS during the golf outing. For the duration, the pool held in the food court at the Base Exchange, which has a GameStop, GMC, as well as a busy barber shop and beauty salon. The BX also features a mall-like kiosk selling a range of different framed pictures, including many of POTUS and FLOTUS, starting at $55. They’re all $10 off, but that doesn’t seem an indication of demand; almost all the pictures for sale were $10 off.”

Finally by dinner time… a slice of news seemed to be of slight importance (or at least interesting) in his final report from Saturday: “The 30-minute motorcade ride was relatively uneventful. But as the motorcade worked its way by the Washington Monument, a police car abruptly cut off a bicyclist who apparently got too close to the motorcade (she seemed unharmed; her nerves did not).”

Lazy take on spring flowers

“I know that I will enjoy the flowers once they are in, but don’t feel like going to buy them and plant them. Want to do it for me?” — GOProud co-founder Jimmy LaSalvia.

Journo wants Bieber out of USA

“I think we can all agree on the need to deport Justin Bieber.” — David Frum blog Editor Justin Green.

OTR

“‘This all off the record’ how friends turn on you when you become a reporter.” — National Review‘s Katrina Trinko. To which Politico‘s Ken Vogel remarked, “& it’s usually super lame stuff you’d never cover.”

A nod to print journalism

“As he was leaving WH this morning, he had a print newspaper under his arm, unclear which one. (Yay print)” — CSM’s Linda Feldman in a Sunday morning Pool Report who was of course writing about POTUS.

Ouch!

Self-appointed media critic

Good Morning FishbowlDC Readers

QUOTES of the DAY

“Hey Veggies, I’m giving up meat for #Lent. Went out for 40 days on this bad boy. Wish me luck.” — MSNBC’s Luke Russert in a Tuesday night tweet with this accompanying serious piece of meat above.

Downfalls of not knowing the lingo

A short scene from MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” this morning. Jeff Greenfield is senior political correspondent for CBS News.

Mika: What if Blago is never caught?

Jeff Greenfield: Who?

Mika: What if Blago, Blago, Blago Voyavich?

Jeff Greenfield: I’m sorry, I don’t know your strange ways.

Politico‘s Highlights Magazine headline of the day

In Politico‘s new Kids’ Section, anything can happen. Today’s headline from a story by Amie Parnes is: “Obama in ‘Unfamiliar Fishes’ book.” The short post features news of Obama’s favorite dish, which is apparently the heart healthy Hawaiian fish that is “breaded, fried meat with rice, macaroni and brown gravy.” This is not a cookbook.

Cokie on NPR: ‘Not a good season.’

“The state of journalism is fabulous. It’s not a good season for the executives at NPR but the journalists keep churning it out.” — Senior News Analyst of NPR Cokie Roberts on this morning’s “Morning Joe. ”

Ash Wednesday: redundant?

“Is it just me, or does Ash Wednesday seem redundant this year? Either way, my home state of Illinois is giving up the death penalty on this first day of Lent – and will become the 16th state to abolish capital punishment.” — Politics Daily Editor-in-Chief Melinda Henneberger, who has assumed former Executive Editor Carl Cannon‘s morning duties of sending out the morning e-mail.

Overheard…

“#onlyinwashington you get: 10 reporters gabbing @ a bar about Issa, only to figure out that he’s 10 feet away and heard them.” — RealClearPolitics‘ Erin McPike in a Monday tweet referring to House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) who fired his Spokesman Kurt Bardella last week after it was reported that he leaked journalists’ emails to a NYT reporter.

A GOP pundit gives praise to NYT

“Pleasant surprise: The NYT does a pretty fair and balanced job covering the video prank against NPR. Good story.” — Former Bush White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer in a Wednesday morning tweet.

A special Happy Birthday to….

Shani Hilton, the woman who refused to comment when we asked her if she had anything to do with writing @DCJourno, who is all but extinct at this point despite being featured in NYT. She’s pals with a number of Boy Banders who include Wired‘s Spencer Ackerman, who remarked, “Happy happy birthday to @shani_o. So happy she moved to DC.” We are too. Shani is Associate Editor of the Center for American Progress’s CampusProgress.org and Washington correspondent for Colorlines magazine.

NY Daily News Reports on Toobin’s Tangled Web

Yikes. The New York Daily News reporting today about CNN correspondent Jeffrey Toobin’s love child.

New York newspapers always know how to make a splash. The headline?

CNN legal eagle Jeffrey Toobin in baby mama drama – with daughter of CBS News’ Jeff Greenfield

An excerpt:

“One of the media elite’s most whispered-about scandals went public Wednesday when married CNN correspondent Jeffrey Toobin squared off with a woman who says he’s the father of her baby.

Yale-educated lawyer Casey Greenfield – the daughter of eminent CBS News analyst Jeff Greenfield – had a chilly faceoff with Toobin in Manhattan Family Court.

The ex-lovers barely spoke in the waiting area before joining their lawyers behind closed doors with a court referee to hash out custody and money issues.”

Atlantic/NJ Poll of Prominent Journos Says Journalism Hurt By Internet; Obama Coverage “Right”

Morning Reading List, 04.11.07

Good morning Washington.

You think journalists like Tim Russert, Jeff Greenfield, etc. should not continue to appear on Don Imus’ radio program.

An ABC release announced that “World News with Charles Gibson” “was the #1 evening newscast among Total Viewers, Households and Adults 25-54 for the week of April 2. Averaging 8.08 million Total Viewers and a 2.0/8 among Adults 25-54, ‘World News’ outperformed NBC’s ‘Nightly News’ by 440,000 Total Viewers and 60,000 key demo viewers. This marks ABC’s greatest Total Viewing advantage over NBC in nearly nineteen months.”

A Facebook page supporting Tony Snow has been created.

A sneak peak at some of the VIPs expected during WHCA weekend.

The PEJ News Coverage Index for the week of April 1-6 shows, “The now-resolved hostage crisis with Iran attracted the most media coverage last week while the investigation into the fired U.S. attorneys went on temporary hiatus. But even with the voting 19 months away, the 2008 race for the White House continues to fascinate the press, the second story only behind the debate over the war in Iraq.”

The AP reports, “The Bush administration and the Defense Department are among the winners of the 2007 Jefferson Muzzle awards, given Tuesday by a free-speech group to those it considers the most egregious First Amendment violators in the past year.”

The Wall Street Journal reports, “In the battle for control of the Democratic Party, the George Soros-MoveOn.org crowd is used to getting its way. So it’s revealing to watch the consternation in those precincts to the Congressional Black Caucus decision to co-sponsor a pair of Presidential primary debates this year with
Fox News.”

From a reader, “I was trying to figure out why ABC is sending out so many breaking news updates on Imus: It’s because they’re the only network not involved. The show is for CBS Radio and NBC broadcasts it on MSNBC, so ABC must be loving dirtying everyone else’s sandbox….”

IMAO’s response to the New York Times article on making a blogger code of conduct: “Yawn.”

Atlantic Information Services, Inc. is looking for a Health Care Reporter/Editor.

The Associated Press is looking for an Editorial Assistant.

“Wall Street Journal publisher Dow Jones is said to be in advanced talks to buy Financial News, the London-based investment banking newspaper. A deal could be announced within days. Financial News is published every week and has its own real-time Web site with 40,000 subscribers.”

Newsday reports, “America’s newspapers are facing unprecedented challenges, say industry experts. No longer will publishers enjoy 20% to 40% profits. Today, large urban newspapers often produce profit margins in the teens, which many Wall Street investors find unsatisfying.”

Wall Street Journal tells us, “How Blogging Can Help You Get a New Job.”

Variety reports that in addition to John Edwards, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are passing on the Fox debate with the CBC. “A spokesman for Clinton told Daily Variety that she was only committing to debates sanctioned by the Democratic National Committee, which the Fox debate with the CBC is not.”

The Charlotte Observer opines, “The uproar over a racist insult by broadcaster Don Imus offers some interesting insights into the American entertainment machine.”

Ana Marie Cox: Apparently not a big fan of Mark Halperin.

From the Politico: Speaking of journos, White House reporters are apparently grumbling about the number of presidential hopefuls they have to cover, considering the election has started so early. There’s the Democratic field, the Republican field and, of course, Bush. This, we hear, has led to a whole new low: the Vacation Vote. Some journalists have apparently begun joking that they will vote for the candidate with the best vacation home — and after spending eight years watching Bush cutting down brush in Crawford, Texas, who can blame them?”

As the former Los Angeles Times bureau chief in Baghdad, Borzou Daragahi witnessed the tumultuous events of the Iraq war unfold during the 4 1/2 years he spent in Mesopotamia. Check out his personal narrative here.

Jonathan Martin notes, “What is most shocking to me, as a longtime Imus listener, is not so much that he eventually found himself in hot water, but that it took him so long to get there.”

Blah blah black sheep has a question “Only Washingtonians Would Ask: Do you think David Gregory has ever eaten at David Greggory?”

A reader asks, “Sign of the apocalypse? Nytimes.com, washingtonpost.com, and latimes.com all wasted the time and energy of their own staff writers to write stories on the Birkhead DNA test — OFF THE TV? Really, guys? *This* is what you want to spend your newsrooms’ precious time and resources doing, when wire copy would plenty suffice?”

A reader wrote in to say Jesse Jackson was “on Washington Post Radio (WTWP) at 6:00pm to weigh in on the Imus debate. He will be joined by guests, April Ryan & Michael Harrison.”

A reader says, “I wish they would bring Network (CNN) down to Washington dc.”

NewYorkBusiness.com reports, “Unlike its media rivals, News Corp. has plunged into new types of media as well as into new markets worldwide, and that contrarian approach has paid off handsomely for the company’s shareholders.”

A reader tells us, “Check out WaPo’s Book World spring preview to see how many books by WaPo writers are listed. The Post loves its own.”

A tip from last week: “okay Mark Plotkin is annoying enough on his show, but today he bombarded Hoyer’s weekly briefing. Look how long this question he asked is! ‘Q I listened to the debate on D.C. obviously very closely, and there is a sort of supposition that real people don’t live here, that we’re sort of vessels of the Federal Government. Early on, Nancy Pelosi wrote Speaker Hastert a letter saying that there are no statutes in Statuary Hall that represents District residents. The District Government has now funded that, said wait until Democrats get into control, and that will be a visible signal that actual people live here and are celebrated in some way. Why hasn’t that bill moved in Congresswoman Millender — McDonald’s House administration committee. Are you favoring that and can’t that be done very quickly?’”
