DC Journo-Land: It’s Not All Meanness and Backbiting

Happy Birthday Stephanie! It sure does get depressing here in the FishbowlDC offices, a.k.a. the patio in front of the Starbucks at 18th and Columbia (Free Wi-Fi y’all!). Forget that it’s so so cold, and that the darkness comes at 5:00 PM these days -sometimes the beat can just get you down. DC journos are known for their bitchy backhanded party banter, cryptic texts, and scathing online ripostes, and it can be quite an emotional drain to cover it all.

But then there are moments that make it all worthwhile. Moments that remind you, “Hey we may all hate each other a little, but in the end, we’re all so screwed up that no one can love us but the people we work with.”

And we do love each other. And it just warms my heart.

Exhibit A is this touching birthday video for CNN’s Stephanie Kotuby, starring colleagues Vaughn Sterling and Jill Chappell, set to the music of the late, great Lou Reed. Click, watch, and be merry. And Happy Birthday Stephanie!

CNN’s New Guard Greets Fox Newsers

A peculiar welcome wagon awaited Brit Hume and Karl Rove outside Fox News’ Washington bureau on Wednesday night.  Before they could enter the studios for their respective hits, both Fox Newsers were forced to pass by some 200 guests of CNN’s New Guard fete.  Awwwwkward.

“Rove looks like he could use a drink,” remarked one party goer.  “Call him over,” suggested another.

But unfazed by the clinking of glasses and rumble of voices, neither FNC personality gave more than a glance at the crew who had congregated on the patio of Johnny’s Half Shell, right in front of Fox’s North Capitol Street headquarters.

Sipping vino and noshing the night away, under glowing CNN logos were ‘new guarders’ such as DOD’s Doug Wilson, UN Foundation’s Heather Wong, Wally Adeyemo from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, W.H. Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest, State Department new media guru Alec Ross, CIA spokeswoman Marie Harf, Doug Heye, Ayotte press secretary Jeff Grappone, Reid communications director Adam Jentleson, Jen Psaki, Thune’s Kyle Downey, Duke University’s Ronnie Chatterji, Rand Paul spokeswoman Moira Bagley and Becca Glover from Rep. Issa’s press shop.  They mixed and mingled with CNN’s Sam Feist, Wolf Blitzer, Dana Bash, Edie Emery, Megan Grant, Donna Brazile, Jill Chappell, Sarah Baker, Jen Scoggins, and media types such as The Hill’s Judy Kurtz, Kelly DiNardo, WaPo’s Amy Argetsinger, and soon-to-be Roll Call’s Abby Livingston.

At the end of the evening CNN bid their guests farewell with a gift: network-branded umbrellas, in case of rain.

CNN’s Lucky Penny Party

Whoever says a penny won’t get you anywhere, probably wasn’t on the guest list for CNN’s private party following the Congressional Correspondents Dinner last night.  While most attendees of the dinner trickled out of the ballroom for an obligatory nightcap at the NCTA reception, the lucky few holding one of CNN’s lucky pennies (left) partied the night away at Lincoln. Guests at the top-secret fete were treated to live music, an open bar and  a sneak preview of the glam resto-lounge set to open its doors to the public in mid-April.  CNN’s Piers Morgan, Edie Emery, Jill Chappell, Jennifer Scoggins, Sam Feist, Michelle Jaconi, Megan Grant, Christa Robinson, Peter Hamby, Alexander Mooney, Jeff Simon, Peter Morris, Evan Glass and Ed Hornick entertained dinner guests and friends of the network until well after midnight.  Spotted mingling on the copper penny-tiled floors were Embassy of Poland’s Art Orkisz, Victoria Michael, AAA’s Peter Nonis, ABC News’ John Hendren, WaPo‘s Amy Argetsinger and WJLA’s Philip Stewart and Rebecca Cooper.

More on the party to come but we couldn’t help but gush over Time and People magazines celeb-caliber swag bags that guests walked with after last night’s swanky party at the St. Regis Hotel. Media-types like CNN’s Edie Emery, Michelle Jaconi and Jill Chappell, NBC’s Betsy Fischer, Andrea Mitchell, Luke Russert, Savannah Guthrie and Mark Whitaker took home patent leather Le Sport Sacs filled with goodies such as a Little Honey travel pillow,Tip Toes foot petals, Murad sunscreen, Clinique Happy Dr. Bronner’s pure castille soap, Tokyo-milk perfume soap, Coola face cream Clinique Men’s face scrub and shave cream, Clinique quick blush, gloss wear, lip smoothie, power mascara, kohl shaper, eye serum and moisture surge, Jock’s Soaps complexion bar, half-dozen Georgetown Cupcakes, EO hand sanitizer and cleansing wipes, Paddy Wax, Envirosax tote, Ecosystem journal, Luxe Link, Company Store Egyptian cotton towel, Joesph Abboud silk necktie, Sygg black panther water bottle and a DVD of HBO’s “By the People” documentary.

And even though the drinks and food flowed freely, the mags sent guests home with snacks like Starbucks Via, Attune probiotic bar, Vita Coco, Bloomsbury Emergency Chocolate bar, Justin’s nut butters, Green’s + chocolate energy bar, Larabar gift set, Serendipity’s frozen hot chocolate mix, Funky Chunky popcorn, Veggie straws, Snikiddy’s baked fries, Theo chocolate gift set and Boost daily health booster.
