Buzzfeed Turns The Tables on WHCD

With the White House Correspondents Dinner a little over a week away, most news outlets have made their plans. They’ve invited guests, scored party invites and rented tuxes. One outlet that won’t be representing at the annual nerd prom is Buzzfeed. Despite their application for tables, the WHCD has denied them tables at this year’s event. We have to wonder if WHCD President Ed Henry has turned this into a personal squabble. Buzzfeed’s Michael Hastings wrote about his dislike of Henry in his book. We wrote about that here. Maybe Henry is a little touchy with his tables?

Despite the snub, Buzzfeed is turning WHCD lemons into lemonade. They are throwing their own “BBQ with Buzzfeed” DURING the Correspondents Dinner. It’s a ballsy move that will allow folks without tickets to the actual dinner to party with Buzzfeed. We hear the entire NY based Politics team, including founder Jonah Peretti, is making the trek.

More details. continued…

In the final part of our three-part “Media Beat” interview with Jonah Peretti, the internet entrepreneur talks about launching The Huffington Post and BuzzFeed.

“I wasn’t sure if it would be a big success,” Peretti admits, remembering the days leading up to the launch of The Huffington Post. “A friend of mine asked me if he should invest, and I was like ‘I’m not sure’… I didn’t really want to risk my friend’s money.”

He also offers advice for those wanting to launch their own startup, explaining that entrepreneurs shouldn’t worry about what tech blogs are covering.

BuzzFeed’s Jonah Peretti: ‘Our Reporters Are Doing the Kind of Work Reporters Love to Do’

In the first part of our three-part “Media Beat” interview with Jonah Peretti, the BuzzFeed founder discusses how his company is becoming a full-scale news organization following a flurry of recent hires and breaks down how social media drives news online.

“We have reporters who have beats and sources, and can do original work,” Peretti says, “the kind of work that reporters love to do, where they dig in on a story. They’re not just aggregating, they’re not summarizing what’s happening elsewhere, they’re creating something new and original.”

VIDEO: Jonah Peretti Remembers Andrew Breitbart

BuzzFeed founder Jonah Peretti was in our mediabistroTV studio today for an upcoming Media Beat interview and he shared his thoughts on Andrew Breitbart, who died Thursday morning. Peretti worked with Breitbart in launching The Huffington Post.

“It’s easy for internet commenters to say, you now, ‘It’s good he’s dead and look at all the damage he’s done,’” Peretti said. “But it’s harder when you’ve met someone to feel that way.”

Politico Loses Powerhouse Ben Smith

BuzzFeed has swooped in and stolen Politico‘s Ben Smith, reports NYT‘s The Decoder and a number of other New York outlets. The company announced the news today. He will be Editor-in-Chief and responsible for hiring several new reporters. This has to sting. Only a few weeks back Smith plunged into media reporting and Politico did away with its “On Media” blog entirely.

Smith told FBDC: “I wasn’t looking — I love my job, and POLITICO the best place in the galaxy to be a political reporter. This was just too cool an opportunity to pass up.”

The NYT reports that Smith’s byline on political stories will remain exclusive to Politico throughout the presidential election. He’ll also be a weekly columnist. Politico Editor-in-Chief John Harris spoke favorable of Smith in the report, saying he anticipated this could happen someday.

An excerpt:

“‘As editor in chief, Mr. Smith will hire more than a dozen reporters right away, said Jonah Peretti, who founded BuzzFeed with Kenneth Lerer,’and then we will keep growing from there. The reporters will be scoop generators, Mr. Peretti said. ‘By breaking scoops and drawing attention,’ he added, they will help increase traffic and, by extension, advertising sales.”
