NPR’s Vivian Schiller is Out

NPR’s President and CEO Vivian Schiller has resigned.

In a release from NPR just moments ago, the board has accepted Schiller’s resignation:

The NPR Board of Directors announced today that it has accepted the resignation of Vivian Schiller as President and CEO of NPR, effective immediately. Board Chairman Dave Edwards said: “The Board accepted Vivian’s resignation with understanding, genuine regret and great respect for her leadership of NPR these past two years.”

In the meantime…Joyce Slocum, SVP of Legal Affairs and General Counsel, will be appointed to the position of Interim CEO. The Board will establish an Executive Transition Committee to develop a timeframe and process for the recruitment and selection of new leadership.

UPDATE: Schiller was supposed to be at Web Brand’s Mediabistro offices today in Manhattan to tape a MediaBeat interview. That was canceled yesterday. TVNewser reports in a story today: “An NPR publicist informed us yesterday that Schiller’s trip to New York was “cut short” and that the interview would be postponed for a second time.”

UPDATE #2: Schiller’s publicist told Mediabistro: “So sorry about this, but we will need to cancel Vivian’s Media Beat interview tomorrow. Unfortunately she has to cut her NY trip short and now will not be up tomorrow. My apologies! We can reschedule at a later date – perhaps in late March or April.” This is the second time Schiller had to cancel. The last was after the whole Juan Williams fiasco — and we know how that turned out. Timing is everything.
