Chris vs. Chris: Who is the Better Man?

The next time FNC’s Chris Wallace and MSNBC’s Chris Matthews are contestants on Power Player “Jeopardy,” hopefully producers will pit them against each other. Then we might be able to determine just which Chris is more appealing. In the meantime, we’ll improvise.

In the game show that aired Monday, Matthews played against CNN’s Lizzie O’Leary and former Obama White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. Wallace’s round was broadcast Wednesday. He faced “Dr. Oz” host Mehmet Oz and “BBC World News America” host Katty Kay.

Based on coverage of both nights, Matthews bombed and Wallace crushed the competition. Following Matthews’ poor showing, NewsBusters recalled Matthews hypothesizing in 2008 how well former V.P. hopeful Sarah Palin would perform in the game (in short, he was calling her dumb). The NewsBusters story went viral. Flash to Wallace coverage: almost every story highlighted how well he did.

Jezebel Editor-in-Chief Jessica Coen called Matthews “entirely too slow” for the game show. His MSNBC colleague Willie Geist relentlessly mocked him for not seeming to grasp the answer-in-the-form-of-a-question rule of the game. “Did you see his face?!” Geist said the next morning.

For Wallace, the comments were nicer. “Congratulations to my friend Chris Wallace … for winning DC Jeopardy! tonight,” his colleague Juan Williams tweeted. “Go get ‘em, Chris!” FNC reporter Shannon Bream tweeted in support.

But Jeopardy is just a game, after all. We still need to settle the score between the two men: Who really is the better man?

Here we have Chris Matthews

Age: 66

Hair: Blonde. Gets unruly on long election nights. The mane looks crazier as the night wears on.

Education: College of the Holy Cross

Spouse: Kathleen Matthews, chief communications and public affairs officer for Marriott International

TV behavior: He’s the interrupter. He does it to the point where even his guests roll their eyes and look annoyed as they wait for him to finish diatribes. That said, reporters who go on his program also say they like him and insist that he’s quite amiable off air.

Best on-air moment: An incredibly awkward interview during the 2004 Republican National Convention in which former Democratic Sen. Zell Miller (who was being questioned via satellite) told Matthews to “get out of my face” and said he wished he could “challenge” him to a “duel.”

Controversy: Matthews has been accused several times of being openly sexist, particularly in regards to Hillary Clinton, who he said didn’t become a U.S. Senator on merit, but because her husband “messed around.” And then there’s the time he “forgot” President Barack Obama “was black for an hour” during the 2010 State of the Union address.

Famous relative: His son Michael‘s father-in-law James Ormonde Staveley-O’Carroll was implicated in a $8.1 million international drug bust. Over 4,000 pounds of pot were found in transit on a boat from Jamaica to the U.S in early 2011. The boat belonged to Staveley-O’Carroll. Also, Matthews’ son Thomas has been cast to play in Aaron Sorkin‘s upcoming HBO drama “The Newsroom.”

Workload: Hour-long nightly news talk show “Hardball,” half-hour Sunday morning news panel show “The Chris Matthews Show”

Accomplishments: Failed run for the House of Representatives in Pennsylvania as a Democrat; he received 25 percent of the primary vote.

And here is Chris Wallace

Age: 64

Hair: Dark and kempt and rarely moves. Fox News must have better hairspray.

Education: Harvard College

Spouse: Lorraine Wallace, author of the cookbook Mr. Sunday’s Saturday Night Chicken and Mr. Sunday’s Soups.

TV Behavior: Folksy. Wallace, unlike Matthews, is annoying in an entirely different way. He’s the school marm, the enforcer of the rules and making sure guests don’t interrupt one another. They might as well hand him a ruler for the show. At least then all his enforcing might be entertaining.

Best on-air moment: A contentious 2006 interview with Bill Clinton in which the former president accused Wallace of asking questions that he wouldn’t “ask the other side [Republicans].”

Controversy: Wallace faced some sexist claims of his own. Last year he asked then presidential candidate Michele Bachmann if she was “a flake” (which he later apologized for). His colleague Greta Van Susteren asked if he would “ask the same question of a man.” And Wallace faced intense criticism for a lack of objectivity when he said if presidential candidate Ron Paul were to win the Iowa Caucuses in January, it would discredit them.

Famous relative: Son of the late CBS reporter Mike Wallace.

Workload: Hour-long Sunday news talk show “Fox News Sunday”

Accomplishments: A Peabody and three Emmy awards

Dr. Oz, Kareem and Lewis Black to Square Off Against Washington’s Alleged Power Journos

We now have the details for the Jeopardy “Power Players” edition that is coming to D.C. It tapes this weekend and starts Saturday morning. The first round will see MSNBC’s Chris Matthews battle Lizzie O’Leary from CNN and former POTUS Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs. Their game will tape at 10am ET. After that, Fox News’ Dana Perino will battle CNBC’s David Faber and basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Because when we think Washington D.C. power players, we think Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. After that, BBC’s Katty Kay faces down Fox’s Chris Wallace and Dr. Mehmet Oz. Again, Oprah’s doctor isn’t the first person that pops to mind when we think D.C. Power Players but he can talk poop with the best of ‘em. Following that meeting of the minds, CNN’s Anderson Cooper meets MSNBC’s Kelly O’Donnell and NYT columnist and all-around big-brain Thomas L. Friedman. The final matchup tapes at 6:35pm ET and features MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, comedian Lewis Black and Chicago Tribune’s Clarence Page.

Sunday Morning Panels: Only Males Need Apply

We’re cutting to the chase. No flowery intro needed to delve into a topic we know you’ve awaiting all week long: the number of mushroom heads that will appear on this weekend’s political talk shows. As usual, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews wins the consistency award for having two females on his panel.

CBS’s “Face the Nation”: 0

The interview will be with GOP presidential front runner Herman Cain.

(Fittingly for this roundup, Slate and CBS’s John Dickerson will provide analysis.)

ABC’s “This Week”: 1

Former Maj. Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas), George Will, WaPo and ABC News, Cokie Roberts, ABC News, Austan Goolsbee, former Chairman, Obama Council of Economic Advisers.

NBC’s “The Chris Matthews Show”: 2

Bob Woodward, WaPo
Andrea Mitchell, NBC News
John Heilemann, New York Magazine
Katty Kay, BBC

FNC’s “Fox News Sunday”: 2 Proudly blacklisted by Fox News PR since June 2010. We’ll bring this to you as soon as hell freezes over or sooner as the case may be. In any case, they usually permit one female on their panel, typically NPR’s Mara Liasson. UPDATE: Indeed, Liasson is on the panel, as is former White House Press Sec. Dana Perino, Brit Hume and Juan Williams. (h/t Mike Allen’s Politico Playbook)

CNN’s “Reliable Sources”: 2

Jennifer Rubin, columnist, WaPo, Roger Simon, chief political columnist, Politico, John Aravosis, liberal political blogger, AMERICAblog.com, Glynnis MacNichol, editor of Business Insider’s media page “The Wire”, Paul Farhi, media reporter for WaPo, Jeff Jarvis, author, “Public Parts”; founder, BuzzMachine.com

WETA’s “Washington Week” with Gwen Ifill and National Journal: 3

Sunday Morning Panels: Only Males Need Apply

Hide the toddlers. We’re counting up the number of trouser snakes on the Sunday morning political talk show panels again this week and the picture is actually significantly hopeful. Program note: CNN’s “State of the Union” with Candy Crowley is pre-empting Howie’s “Reliable Sources” so that program will not be included in our weekly roundup. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews has a panel that’s 50 percent female as usual. Enjoy!

NBC’s “Meet the Press”: 1

This week NBC’s “MTP” is broken into three segments. The First is Herman Cain, then Gov.’s Bobby Jindal and Tim Pawlenty and finally NBC’s Chuck Todd and BBC’s Katty Kay. We’re considering the last panel as the one to most comparably count.

ABC’s “This Week”: 2

ABC’s Jonathan Karl, Ruth Marcus, WaPo, GOP pundit Mary Matalin, WaPo‘s George Will

CBS’s “Face the Nation”: 2
John Dickerson, CBS News Political Analyst
Julianna Goldman, White House Correspondent, Bloomberg Television

(Also significant to note that Sharyl Attkisson, CBS News Investigative Correspondent, will be a guest.)

FNC’s “Fox News Sunday”: Proudly blacklisted by Fox News PR since June 2010. We’ll update this when we hunt it down.

WETA’s “Washington Week With Gwen Ifill and NJ” (Airs on Friday, repeats on Saturday): 2

Karen Tumulty, WaPo, Michael Duffy, TIME

Sunday Morning Panels: Only Males Need Apply

Things are looking up for females on at least some of the Sunday morning programs this weekend, as we conduct our routine count of how many wangs will appear on the shows. Please note minor and major changes to the feature. This week we’re including “Washington Week” with Gwen Ifill despite the fact that it airs live on Friday and repeats on Saturday. As you can see, the program is not allergic to women. This week you’ll also notice a smaller-sized photograph. FishbowlMatt approached yesterday saying some were offended by the larger sized penis picture as it was rubbing some the wrong way. So we’ve shrunk the penises and framed them in gaudy gold for a more refined look.

Sunday Panels: Only Males Need Apply

Do you have a penis? Do you know a little something about politics or can you at least fake it? Then the Sunday morning political talk show circuit is for you. This Sunday features a particular abundance of testosterone on Fox News Sunday and most of the other shows. Each week we’re going to keep tabs on the gender breakdown of the panels and guests and see who regularly invites females on their shows and more importantly, who doesn’t.

Take a look.

A belated but heartfelt Happy Birthday to NRSC Spokesman Brian Walsh who, according to Politico’s Playbook, celebrated at Hill Country last night. We’re running a picture of his dog, Rudy, because any excuse in a good excuse to run this pooch sitting pretty in his faux L.L. Bean Shearling jacket. By the way, we understand Walsh was given the trendy Shake Weight as a gift. The free weight works your triceps, shoulders, even your chest. Visit here if you want to know more.

Henneberger freelancing for TIME

“Closing my first piece for TIME. And when is the last time I spent even a DAY working out of an office? (A: I don’t think my kids even remember it!)” — Former Politics Daily Editor-in-Chief Melinda Henneberger in a Wednesday Facebook update. She’s writing a few freelance stories for the magazine.

Something unusual in Washington: An all-female roundtable

“It’s a fine collection of women.” — MSNBC “Morning Joe” co-host Willie Geist in reaction to TIME‘s Rick Stengel saying he’d prefer to be in Washington this morning with the all-female roundtable of Mika Brzezinski, Norah O’Donnell, BBC’s Katty Kay and WSJ Columnist Peggy Noonan. Brzezinski was in Washington Wednesday night for a speaking engagement for her book, Knowing Your Value: Women, Money and Getting What You’re Worth.

D.C. Rule of Thumb

“Rule of Washington dinners: where two congressmen speak, one will for a few too long, God bless him.” — National Review Online’s Kathryn Lopez in a Wednesday tweet.

“Am at the part in “Broadcast News” where Bill Hurt is smiling as he watches himself, fake tears on his cheeks, in his own date rape newscast.” — Politico‘s Maggie Haberman in a Wednesday tweet.

The Critic

“FYI: All marital splits are a ‘long-time coming.’” — Politico‘s Patrick Gavin in a recent tweet.

“Nothing makes your day like a Capitol Police officer chastising a cabbie for barreling through the crosswalk.” — The Takeaway’s Capitol Hill radio correspondent Todd Zwillich in a Wednesday tweet.

What makes Ratigan a New Yorker?

“When the smell of urine on the sidewalk no longer bothers you.” — MSNBC Host Dylan Ratigan, who was in Washington for the WHCD last weekend, in a “21 Questions” feature for New York Magazine. Read the entire interview here.

A quick convo between two journos

Politico Media Coordinator Stefanie Christensen: “Why do female Hill staffers refuse to blowdry their hair?? have you noticed this phenomenon?”

Politico CLICK writer Karin Tanabe: “I certainly have and it is all kinds of wrong. Wet hair = only okay at the beach or during the Nirvana years.”

Washington Life’s Most Invited – Which Journos Made It?

<img alt="iStockglass cornucopia255.jpg" src="/fishbowlDC/files/original/iStockglass cornucopia255.jpg" width="250" class="alignright" hspace="3' vspace="3"/ Washington Life has released it’s “Most Invited” list and here are the Washington journalists who made the A-List. We must say, no big shockers. But one question: Where the hell is Tammy Haddad?

Haddad, a who’s who around town, is spotted at many a party and hosts her annual Garden Party, one of the most sought after soirees of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner weekend. But she didn’t make the cut. As we reported yesterday, WL Executive Editor Michael Clements poked “fun” at Haddad’s grey hair stripe during a dinner at Blue Duck Tavern Tuesday evening by making the hair streak a place on Foursquare. We do sincerely hope her hair isn’t what kept her off the list, as it seems a rather petty, inappropriate reason to exclude her. We’re also not convinced it was that “fun” of a thing to do the other night.

We’ve asked Clements for comment on how decisions about the list were made. Stay tuned…

The List: CBS’s Rita Braver, NBC MTP Host David Gregory; BBC’s Katty Kay, VF’s Christopher Hitchens; BBC’s Katty Kay; Politico’s Mike Allen; MSNBC’s Chris Matthews; NBC’s Norah O’Donnell; WaPo’s Sally Quinn, Roxanne Roberts and Amy Argetsinger and FNC’s Chris Wallace.

> Update: Clements has replied. It’s heavy on Washington speak, but he has some points to make – like 12 of them. Check out his verryyy long quote after the jump. Many thanks to Clements for his response. In all his remarks, he had no comment on Haddad not making the list…
