Say hello to Townhall.com’s Managing Editor Kevin Glass. This is his fifth or sixth CPAC. He has spent most of it with Townhall. “Yeah, it’s a fairly big deal,” he told us today in an empty banquet room of the Gaylord Hotel. “For all the crap that it gets, it’s the largest and most important gathering of conservatives every year.” Looking back on previous CPACS… “At the 2008 CPAC, President Bush showed up as a surprise at 7:15 in the morning one day,” he recalled. “He wasn’t on the schedule. At that same CPAC, Mitt Romney dropped out of the Republican presidential primary against John McCain. It was interesting to see back then that the grass roots activists were upset. The Ron Paul supporters were always fun every year. Ann Coulter spoke before Ron Paul, so Ron Paul supprters kind of flooded the ballroom. She was insulting Libertarians as pot smoking hippies.” Glass says the conference is “definitely still exciting.” But, he says, the venue change has made it harder to gauge. “There’s no media balcony where we used to be able to watch the crowd get excited.” Glass has worked at Townhall for five years minus a six month stint the Washington Examiner. Born and raised…Born in Houston, Glass lived there for about the first decade of his life before his family moved to Moscow and then London. College…A graduate of Colgate University, he studied political science and worked for his high school and college newspapers. His “abroad semester” at Colgate was Washington, D.C., where he  interned for Freedom Works and the RNC. “It was more of an activist type of thing,” he said, explaining that he thinks conservative journalists need to see themselves as reporters first, journalists second. “I think what you would call Townhall is advocacy reporting,” he says. “I think that’s where conservative journalism is moving. I don’t want to call it real reporting as opposed to what people would call traditional journalism. I don’t want to close the tent on what a real reporter is and I’m not the person to define what a real reporter is.” Why not? “I think that we’ve seen with blogs, anyone can be a journalist.” Really, anyone can be a journalist? “Not everyone can be a good journalist,” he said. “But the act of finding out facts and telling them to people is something that has been democratized in online space.” Competition among conservative publications…For a long time, says Glass, National Review has been the gold standard of news and opinion. But that’s changed a lot. I wouldn’t say anyone says, you work for them, you’ve made it. You can make it anywhere.” 

If you were a carbonated beverage, which would you be?  My favorite is Mountain Dew but I don’t think I’m Moutain Dew. I would say I’m Sierra Mist.

How often do you Google yourself? Not that much.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to an editor/boss (or vice versa)?  “That’s bullshit.”

Who is your favorite working journalist and why?  I would say Robert Costa at National Review has been an absolute superstar in the last year and a half. He’s doing what I think a lot of conservative journalists should be doing. He’s on the ground everyday. He has probably the best contacts of any reporter anywhere in Washington.

Do you have a favorite word? No, I do not.

Who are you named after? My middle name is my grandfather’s name.

Who would you rather have dinner with – NBC’s Brian Williams, CNN’s Roland Martin, ABC’s Sherri Shepherd or Fox News’ Megyn Kelly? Tell us why. Williams. He seems like a smart and fun guy who would be fun to talk to. I think he is one of the more fair-minded mainstream media reporters out there. Would be interesting to know how he came to be and obviously tips on how to succeed as a journalist.

You will spend a romantic evening with either Scandal’s Kerry Washington, Homeland’s Claire Danes or any of the women from FNC’s “The Five”. Who will it be? (None is not an option.) I would say Kerry Washington. She’s obviously gorgeous and she does great work.

De Pasquale, a board member of the gay conservative group GOProud and director of CPAC from 2006-2011, doesn’t attend the conference anymore; not after other sponsors complained about GOProud’s official involvement in 2010 and 2011. She was dismissed by CPAC organizers. Instead, she convenes a happy hour in Washington for friends coming to town for CPAC. This year, she called it “Don’t Say C—!” It was hosted at PJ Clarke’s Sidecar bar.

Former assistants to De Pasquale help host the event and she says they also will not be going to CPAC. In attendance at the happy hour was GOProud’s Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia, who told FishbowlDC that he also won’t be attending CPAC.

Last week two female Michigan State congresswomen were barred from speaking on the House floor after angrily using the word “vagina” while debating an anti-abortion bill.

Daily Show host and comedian Jon Stewart mocked the House’s decision a few nights ago, saying, “What are they worried about? Vaginas aren’t like Voldemort or Beetlejuice. Invoking the name ‘vagina’ doesn’t make them suddenly appear.” He then highlighted in a “moment of zen” a clip of one CNN anchor saying sarcastically, “Fair warning: I’m about to say a word some of you are going to find offensive. So here’s the warning. Here we go: Vagina.”

MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell interviewed one of the congresswomen about an earlier protest that took place outside Michigan State Capitol, in which there was a live performance of the Vagina Monologues. During O’Donnell’s program, Metro Weekly‘s Chris Geidner tweeted, “If you don’t like vaginas, this is not your TV show.” – [O'Donnell], creating a false choice for me.”

Liberals also started the hashtag #sayvagina on Twitter. As with anything these days, particularly anything regarding vaginas, it was highjacked. “#Sayvagina but don’t say #8.2%JoblessRate,” wrote Breitbart.com Editor Dana Loesch.

Liberal radio show host Leslie Marshall tweeted, “#sayvagina I tell my toddlers to stop saying that in public! Grown women who are legislators? Go ahead!”

We asked a few journos around town what they thought about seeing so much vagina in the news lately and how they handle the subject in their own professional lives. HOH“s Neda Semnani told us it’s not weird at all. “That is what those crazy kids are calling that part of the body these days,” she told FBDC. “Other body parts with names that don’t make me feel awkward: penis, fallopian tube, uterus, urethra, testicle, balls, vulva, breast, boob, hair, nail, shin, pancreas, gland, cells, pinkie, big toe, follicle. Actually, scratch that… ‘Follicle’ sounds gross.”

A TV industry insider did some soul searching and remarked, “I hate the word ‘vagina.’ But not nearly as much as the dreaded P word. In everyday life I prefer to use C U Next Tuesday because it’s succinct and so offensive that it’s funny. In mixed company, I may opt for other humorous terms like ‘hatchet wound.’ But for TV, let’s all agree to stick with ‘vagina.’ That is, unless everyone can rally behind ‘pikachu’ or ‘tamagotchi.’”

A more serious Kevin Glass, managing editor of Townhall.com, said his publication has no official policy on the matter. “We don’t allow any words to be used in poor taste, but don’t censor our authors where it’s appropriate,” he said.

The Daily Caller‘s Taylor Bigler said she’s free when it comes to using the word. “‘Vagina’ is at the very bottom of the list of words that I’m squeamish about saying or using in copy,” she said. “It’s just a part of the body. I’m much more concerned about getting words like ‘douchebag’ and ‘Octomom porn’ past the editors.” Her boss, Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson, takes a far more conservative slant on the matter. “I approach that word as the ancient Israelites did YHWH: I have too much respect to use it lightly,” he said. On the subject of using the word on TV: “No.”

Host of XM Radio’s Press Pool Julie Mason told us she could say “vagina” loud and proud on the air if she wanted, but she tries playing it “mostly square.” She said, “My boss’s general rule is to imagine an eight-year old in the car listening to the show — don’t say things that might cause their parent to switch to [shock jock] Howard Stern as the sober alternative.”

Then there’s this from Bretibart News‘ Tony Lee, who by far had the most interesting personal policy on the matters. “I don’t use that term in person,” he said, “and given what I refer to it as would be too crude for print, I would write ‘female genitalia’ or ‘female genitals,’ which would be consistent with the the word choice in stories dealing with horrific ‘female genital’ mutilation.”

Author of the Mr. Media Training Blog Brad Phillips acknowledged how “absurd” it is “that if George Carlin were alive today, he’d need to expand his list of dirty words you can’t say on television to include ‘vagina.’” His personal advice on using “vagina” in media comes in the form of an introspective question: “Does it help them make their point, or does it serve as a distraction that prevents people from hearing their larger point?” He said the two state congresswomen used the word effectively, as “it drew national attention to an issue they were passionate about.”

Last week Kevin Glass abruptly left the Washington Examiner after being there less than four months. All sides claimed it was a peachy ending. Today Editor Steve Smith announces the new hire of Las Vegas Sun‘s Tim Richardson. Richardson will fill Glass’s shoes as Asst. Managing Editor of Digital. This should be a smooth transition considering he was Managing Editor of Digital at The Sun. But maybe they could have at least given him a better title instead of making it sound like he has been demoted? He did allegedly jack up The Sun‘s page views in his 18 months there. He also formerly worked as a multiplatform editor for Wapo/Newsweek Interactive. Washington’s doors seem to be opening easily for Richardson — his wife, Cara, snagged a job as an editor at USA Today.

“I did leave the Examiner last week,” Glass said in an email to FishbowlDC. “Not for political reasons or cultural reasons or vision reasons – it just wasn’t the job for me, didn’t particularly fit my skill set, and I’m moving on to other opportunities. Management and I parted on amiable terms. Right now I’m doing a bit of freelancing and trying to determine what’s out there.”

Editor Stephen Smith, who wrote a playful, effusive memo on Glass back in July when he was hired for a newly created position of Online Asst. Managing Editor, agreed the split was friendly. “Perfectly amicable,” he wrote. “He just didn’t feel it was the right job for him.” Before the Examiner, Glass worked at Townhall.com for four years.

We’re especially glad to hear that Glass doesn’t have vision problems.

After years of claiming not to be right wing, the Washington Examiner hires an online editor from the obviously conservative TownHall.com and hosts a debate with Fox News. Now, even “The Fix,” a blog edited by Chris Cillizza, has declared the publication as right-wing.

In a story today, Rachel Weiner writes: “A columnist at the right-wing Washington Examiner compared the move to hiring an adviser to Al Gore.”
