ABC7′s Leon Harris Wins Faux ‘Nobel Prize’

ABC7 Anchor Leon Harris will receive the 15th Anniversary Special Recognition Award at the World of Children Award Ceremony tonight in New York City. The award has so many titles it’s making us dizzy.

No, it’s not really a Nobel Peace Prize as the release might fool people. The award has been “hailed” by “leading philanthropic organizations” as the “Noble Prize for Child Advocates.”

The World of Children Award provides funding and recognition to support “life-changing” work for children. Harris is among four individuals receiving the non-Nobel Peace Prize award for “unusual commitment, outstanding leadership and passion for children.”

It really is hard for them to let up on that Nobel Prize faux usage. Co-founders Harry Leibowitz and Kay Isaacson, retired execs from Procter & Gamble and Victoria’s Secret, have some dream to bestow “a Nobel Prize-like award” to those who “dramatically improve” the lives of children.

The non-Nobel Prize will be given out tonight in Manhattan at 583 Park Avenue. By the way, can you spot the fake Louis Vuitton bag above?

Despite POTUS’s Office address, Media Matters partied down Tuesday night by hosting a book party at its downtown HQ for lefty radio host Bill Press, author of Toxic Talk.

“Was a great time,” remarked Dan Henning, Press’s spokesman. “Awesome speeches by [House Majority Whip James] Clyburn and [Sen. Byron] Dorgan and Media Matters President Eric Burns.”

Also there: Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (was to speak but was late, “skipped down his long list of evening events to make sure he got to BillÂ’s”, said his aide; Rep Maxine Waters (D-Calif.); Rep. Sam Farr (D-Calif.), WaPo‘s E.J. Dionne, Mother Jones‘ D.C. Bureau Chief David Corn, Politico‘s Patrick Gavin, ABC 7′s Leon Harris, XM talk show host Joe Madison, Karl Frisch; Media Matters founder David Brock, former Clinton WH Counsel Lanny Davis, even conservative commentator Ron Christie; and David Shuster showed up at the end.

“Media Matters throws a solid party,” Henning added. Cuisine included “lobster, some sort of mushroom quesadilla contraption that was amazing, bacon wrapped scallops, etc. Two good bars, too. Lots of books sold, Politics & Prose was there.”

In an attempt to reach more readers, the WSJ is expanding its sports coverage. The paper started printing a daily sports page yesterday.

Regarding the economy, the Examiner asks, “Heard the news? Reporters think the time for panic is now.” “When one’s inbox is peppered with e-mails announcing colleagues’ layoffs and buyouts, reporting on a political or economic story is more than just hammering out some copy. It’s an effort for survival.”

Q&A with Bob Woodward in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Answering a question on the future of newspapers, Woodward chanels Ben Bradlee, “I recall a couple of months ago having lunch with my old editor at the Post, Ben Bradlee; we were discussing this. He said quite emphatically, and this is the great editor of the last century, ‘obviously there will be fewer newspapers.’ They will be delivered differently, but he believes passionately that there will remain a group of journalists whose job it is to tell what they believe the truth to be. Obviously we are going through a convulsion. Probably we in the newspaper business have not responded fast enough or smart enough, but the need for information is greater. Not just the quick and dirty take of the Internet or bloggers, but people really digging into things and doing the long form.”

She will continue to co-anchor the 6 PM newscast with longtime colleague Gordon Peterson, and will serve as substitute anchor on 7′s 5 PM and 11 PM newscasts. Leon Harris will anchor the 11 PM newscast.

More on Rush Limbaugh from Howard Kurtz in today’s Media Notes. “For weeks now, El Rushbo has been riding a publicity wave, fueled by an unerring sense of showmanship and his bald-faced declaration that he wants President Obama to fail. The media, finding Limbaugh far more fascinating than Mitch McConnell or John Boehner, have staged endless debates over whether the radio talk show host is the new leader of the Republican Party. The conventional strategy in such cases is for the administration in power to avoid talking about a mere radio critic. That would elevate him to the level of the president. Which, it turns out, is exactly what the Obama team wants.”

    FishbowlDC has learned that Leon Harris’ Capital Sunday,” which airs on WJLA (owned by Robert Allbritton who also owns the Politico), will start incorporating some Politico-generated segments into the show, with the larger goal being to eventually turn “Capital Sunday” into a sort of Politico TV (with Leon as the host).

    This will not have any affect on the Politico’s current relationship with CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
