‘The Real Housewives’ Love D.C. Pubs (and the Feeling is Mutual)

real-housewives-of-dc.jpg

All kinds of publications benefit from the upcoming Bravo’s “Real Housewives of D.C.” Bravo’s Andy Cohen has blogged about the show on HuffPost. Catherine Ommanney, a British housewife, is married to a Newsweek photographer. Mary Amons, another housewife, says Washingtonian magazine hooked her up by picking her husband to be a “style setter”. The publisher, she says, is a a “close” friend. That would be Cathy Merrill Williams.

Mary Amons, is described by WaPo as the “super-mom who lives in a McMansion in McLean.” In Wednesday’s take on the show by WaPo’s Lisa de Moraes, she reveals a relationship between Amons and Washingtonian that sounds cozy:

“Mary’s husband, meanwhile, has been chosen one of D.C.’s style setters by Washingtonian magazine because the publisher is “one of my best friends and she’s really hooking me up,” Mary explains as she winks at the camera.”

FishbowlDC sought comment from Washingtonian this morning. A request for comment was not yet returned. Should the publication have a response later in the day we will bring it to you.

WaPo’s Lisa de Moraes Puts CNN’s King, Ugly Betty, on Notice

JK.jpg UB.jpg

As reported in her TV column today, WaPo’s Lisa de Moraes puts Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on her “Winners” list and CNN’s John King, whose show debuted a month ago on the “Losers” list. He shares the space with “Ugly Betty,” and “Damages,” among others.

“John King USA.” One day after CNN put its stars onstage to show them off to advertisers during its upfront presentation at the Time Warner Center in Manhattan, one of those stars suffered his smallest audience yet on his new show — 314,000 viewers.

CNN had no comment.

Blonde Charity Mafia’s Lead Stilettos

bcm cw.jpg The WaPo Grinch just stole my Christmas, reporting that the first would-be Washington reality series “Blonde Charity Mafia” was gifted a big lump of coal by the CW.

The show’s star Katherine Kennedy tells WaPo‘s Lisa de Moraes that “she’s been told by the series’s producers and by CW that she is free to search for other TV project options.”

Changes in WaPo TV Team

In an internal memo obtained by FBDC, WaPo announced a new Style column by Tom Shales, who has been the paper’s lead TV critic for over 30 years. Shales will take a broader role as culture critic, writing not just on all things television but from “a 30,000-foot perspective on our culture and the forces that shape it.” Hank Stuever will take on a new role as WaPo daily television critic. Lisa de Moraes will continue her popular TV Column but will soon be given a new blog.

What we almost missed today…

• The press has been panting after President Obama’s new puppy and hence a “Moment of Zen” for Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart. WaPo’s Howard Kurtz makes an appearance.

• WaPo has launched “Personality Pages” to “create an ecosystem around a writer/columnist with contextual information, links to content created by that person, and other features like RSS feeds,” according to a memo from managing editor Raju Narisetti. Politico reports “so far, 20 staffers were contacted about the program, with half responding: Joel Achenbach, Chris Cillizza, Marc Fisher, Dan Froomkin, Carolyn Hax, John Kelly, Howie Kurtz, Dana Milbank, Lisa de Moraes, and Rob Pegoraro.” Milbank’s up first and you can check out his prototype here.

• And finally today, TMZ has arrived in DC. First scoop, the pooch.

NEWSPAPERS

FishbowlNY: You may have noticed New York Times editor Andy Rosenthal is in the ‘Talk to the Times’ hot seat this week. Romenesko picked up this little gem of a question: “I find it a bit peculiar that the two women columnists, Maureen Dowd and Gail Collins, are satirical and humorous. I adore their writing, and generally think they are spot on, but it is almost like you cannot get a “serious” woman columnist. Do you agree?”

Says Rosenthal: “O.K., so I admit. I’m answering this because it’s a slow, hanging ball… I would be the last person alive to suggest that Maureen Dowd and Gail Collins are not serious columnists. They are indeed, very serious.”

The Chicago Tribune plans to cut another 20 percent from its newsroom staff in an effort to save money.

NYT: Newspaper publishers will start to report first-quarter results this week, but people who follow the industry and have had a glimpse of the 2009 numbers say it is clear that once again, even the most pessimistic predictions were not dark enough.

TV

TVNewser reported first yesterday that John Moody, the executive VP of news editorial for Fox News Channel, is leaving the network for a position with FNC parent company News Corp. Senior VP of news Michael Clemente will now oversee daily editorial duties.

The Baltimore Sun’s David Zurawik thinks NBC’s David Gregory needs to liven up Meet the Press and pronto… “As one of the first critics to say David Gregory looked like he was going to be okay as the successor to Tim Russert, I have to acknowledge being disappointed in what I saw Sunday from the new host. Simply put, there was little energy and virtually no passion. And that is the opposite of what made Russert so compelling to watch.”

WaPo’s Lisa de Moraes: When pirates kidnapped the news cycle and held it hostage for nearly a week, Viacom was not discouraged by the fact that none of its TV networks had a real news operation. Its Spike TV network announced it had ordered up a reality series pilot in which the U.S. Navy hunts down pirates.

Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich has made a deal to star in NBC’s upcoming summer reality show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, the network confirms. “Rod Blagojevich will be a participant on the show pending the court’s approval,” said NBC in a statement.

ONLINE

Three longtime media executives, including CourtTV founder Steve Brill, are building an automated system to allow newspapers and magazines to charge for online access, including an “all you can read” subscription called Journalism Online that would allow access to multiple publications.

MAGAZINES

FishbowlLA: Michael Speier, Executive Editor of Variety, has been laid off. More cuts are expected to come at Variety throughout. The parent company of the publication, Reed Business Information, is laying off 7% of their staff.

Time Inc. CEO Ann Moore said yesterday that the company’s dramatic restructuring last fall — during which roughly 600 staffers at the mega-publisher were laid off — has proven to be an unmitigated success.

NEWS NOTES

Spotted at Monday’s season opener at Nationals Stadium by Reliable Source: George Will, Al Hunt, Luke Russert and James Carville. “It’s different… A little sad,” Carville commented on missing his friend Tim Russert at the games.
