The Two Funniest Journos in Washington Are…

What passes for funny amongst journalists? Nipples. The word f–k. Ann Coulter’s boobs. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) being the hue of burnt sienna. And the National Press Club turning the Edward R. Murrow room into an RNC bondage bar.

Journalists performing stand-up in the National Press Club ballroom for the Commedia del Media charity journo comedy competition Thursday night did imitations of British accented broadcasters and one wondered why CNN didn’t allow one of its own to participate in the competition. Few knew that Sue Bennett, a producer for HBO “Real Time With Bill Maher,” was in the audience scouting the talent. NBC, CBS and FOX were also there filming the performances.

Commedia del Media raises money for charities such as Reporters Without Borders. Of the seven competing journalists, two tied for first place: Former CNN scribe and Miltary.com’s Jamie McIntyre and FOX Business Network correspondent Rich Edson. Judges voted for McIntyre, but the decibel machine revealed that McIntyre and Edson tied at 105.6 decibels.

Edson performed well-practiced impressions of British broadcasters and a raspy-voiced Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.). Though he said he was nervous, many thought his delivery was near-perfect.

McIntyre tweaked CNN, saying, “They told me one of those cameras is for the Fox News Channel. I’m not used to having so many people watching.” He also razzed cable news broadly. “I like to call it news whiz,” he said, comparing it to the cheese. “It’s a simulated news-like product. You could use it for news if you didn’t have any real news.”

McIntyre spilled that a CNN reporter was to perform stand-up last night, but cracked that the event wasn’t serious enough for the network. He said most networks are “thin-skinned” and prone to “hurt feelings.”

Though he never named the journalist who was to perform Thursday night, FishbowlDC learned that the would-be comedian was Capitol Hill correspondent Brianna Keilar. Keilar dropped out a few weeks ago with the CNN Speakers Bureau declaring her unavailable for the evening. Sources say she had wanted to perform.

McIntyre, the former CNN Pentagon scribe, blamed himself for the correspondent dropping out. He said in 2006 he competed in a Funniest Journalist on the Planet contest in Manhattan in which he took comedic jabs at then-CNN host Lou Dobbs. At the time, CNN was none too pleased, McIntyre said, and a network higher-up phoned to scold him as he drove home to Washington.

Mother Jones D.C. Bureau Chief David Corn was among the event’s three judges. A tough judge, he was. “Actually I don’t like comedy at all,” he said before the routines began. “It takes me a lot to laugh. I do think [RNC Chairman] Michael Steele is really funny. He is my favorite comedian. He cracks me up. He kills.”

Former Time reporter Matt Cooper was emcee for the evening. Before the event, he paced and paced, carefully studying his notes. Cooper, whose cadence resembles that of an actual comedian, spoke of horrible crowds in the Metro, saying, “I’m like, ‘Get off the f–king Metro people.’ Let me be depressed by myself.” He also took a stab at (or else, complimented) Politico saying, “As you know, this extraordinary nuclear agreement was signed. …Later they said the world still needed to come together to fight the global threat of Politico for world domination.”

He remarked on his figure, saying, “I’ve tried to lose some weight. I’ve gone from f–king fat to fat.”

Cooper imitated former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) asking aide Andrew Young to pretend Rielle Hunter’s baby was his. “I’m going to owe you a solid when this is over,” he said in an Edwards drawl. …And I think your wife is going to understand more than you think.”

Aside from McIntyre and Edson, other performers included WaPo’s Melissa Bell (who spoke of men in India pinching women’s nipples as a sign of affection), former NPR reporter Jamila Bey, Politics Daily’s Walter Shapiro, McClatchy’s Nancy Youssef and Department of Transportation public relations officer Doug Hecox.

Hecox on the census: “I’m just waiting for John Boehner where he checks the box orange. The story is not that he’s orange, it’s that he’s really burnt sienna.”

He brought up Coulter’s jugs, saying that he’s going to dress up as President Ann Coulter for Halloween, his favorite holiday. But, he said, he feared that his breasts would be too large. “I’m not saying she’s flat chested,” he said. “I’m saying they both lean too far to the right.”

Shapiro recalled watching 60 hours of cable TV for a story. “It was interesting watching the two IQ points slough off my dandruff,” he said.

Youssef described herself as “Muslimish.” She said, “I drink, I fornicate, but I don’t eat pork.”

The evening closed with Sylvia Traymore, whose imitations included The View’s Whoopie Goldberg, actress Monique, and singer Dionne Warwick. Largely with her back turned to the audience, she stripped off her long-sleeved shirt to reveal a sleeveless top to become First Lady Michelle Obama with well-sculpted arms. She then began furiously brushing her hair into an Obama coiffe. Then she turned and pursed her lips, depicting a typical FLOTUS facial expression (see picture after the jump).

Christina Davidson, the event’s organizer, took to the stage to congratulate the winners and lobby for next year’s journo comedians. “If you have the balls for this, talk to me,” she said.

Journalists in attendance included Politics Daily’s Editor-in-Chief Melinda Henneberger, her husband, WaPo education reporter Bill Turque, Politics Daily’s Editor Carl Cannon, NYT’s James Risen, Politico’s Kiki Ryan, The Hill’s Susan Crabtree, WTOP’s Bob Madigan and travel writer Carl Hoffman (boyfriend to WaPo’s Bell).

Schultz for Senate?

The latest in a string of speculated TV newsers as elected officials…Ed Schultz. On MSNBC this morning, Schultz said that North Dakota Democratic leadership has formally asked him to consider running for Sen. Dorgan’s seat in Senate. Schultz said he isn’t ruling it out but it’s too soon to say he is considering it.

King Gets Dobbs’ CNN Time Slot

CNN announced this morning that John King will take over the 7pm time slot vacated by Lou Dobbs just last night.

King is host of “State of the Union” and he will continue to anchor CNN’s Sunday show until the beginning of next year, when his week night program begins.

In a press release CNN/US president Jon Klein said: “John has enthralled CNN viewers with his vast political knowledge, and he has spent the past year reporting from beyond the Beltway on pressing policy issues and the real people they impact. Every night, he’ll share his passion and his insights about what is really going on in Washington and across America.”

And King said he is “thrilled”: “There is a lot of noise and conflict in our political discourse, which is fun to cover, but I’m convinced from my travels that people also thirst for more details as well as insight and context. I’m looking forward to combining those conversations with top newsmakers, smart reporting and expert analysis.”

Good morning FishbowlDC! Long-time CNN anchor Lou Dobbs has decided to leave the cable network. He made this announcement on last night’s show and this is effective immediately. TVNewser has more details and Hotline has the text of his announcement. Looks like NYT‘s Media Decoder broke the story. And here’s how Media Matters reacted. Could Dobbs be considering a future run for political office?

Happy Birthday to Pamela Dornic! What we know and what we’re reading this Thursday morning…

Today’s Reading List 10.12.09

Embedded video from CNN Video

Hope you’re enjoying a three-day Columbus Day weekend. Happy Birthday to Chris Wallace (h/t Playbook). And now, hopefully, everything you need to know in DC media today in one post…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | ONLINE | NEWS NOTES | AWARDS & EVENTS

NEWSPAPERS

How’s M. E. Sprengelmeyer doing at with the Guadalupe County Communicator? NYT catches up with the former Rocky Mountain News Washington correspondent.

TV

Fox News vs. the White House…

Above, White House communications director Anita Dunna again commented on Fox News, this time on CNN’s “Reliable Sources with Howard Kurtz” on Sunday. “The reality of it is that Fox often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party,” Dunn said in the interview posted above.

NYT: “Attacking the news media is a time-honored White House tactic but to an unusual degree, the Obama administration has narrowed its sights to one specific organization, the Fox News Channel, calling it, in essence, part of the political opposition.”

In other TV news…

PBS’ “Frontline” premieres a new season tomorrow with “Obama’s War,” a documentary on the war in Afghanistan, which includes an interview with General Stanley A. McChrystal. Preview here.

ABC’s Cynthia McFadden will sit down with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Moscow for an interview to air on “Nightline,” “GMA” and “World News Tonight” Wednesday. More dets here.

Is Lou Dobbs moving to Fox Business Channel? The CNN anchor apparently met with Roger Ailes.

Take two. People.com reports Jimmy Kimmel‘s dating a longtime staffer.

How does NBC’s Savannah Guthrie read the news on the “Today Show” set? No shoes and polka dot socks, Mike Allen revealed in Playbook this weekend.

FishbowlNY’s Amanda Ernst makes her debut on “Today.” And she gets rowdy with NBC’s Hoda Kotb.

Jamie Gangel had an exclusive with Rush Limbaugh for “Today” and NBC platforms. Part one is here and part two airs tomorrow. On the media, Limbaugh said, “I know how to yank their chain” (h/t TVNewser).

And that was CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo hosting NBC’s coverage of the Columbus Day Parade in NY today.

ONLINE

Politico on Think Progress.

HuffPost has launched a new section today on hot-button issues. “Impact” includes a widget so that readers can “plot a course of action,” if they want to donate to a cause, for example (h/t NYO).

And HuffPost notes: “Progressive bloggers were in an uproar Sunday night after a White House “adviser,” speaking on condition of anonymity, urged them to “take off their pajamas” and get serious about politics. NBC White House correspondent John Harwood relayed the quote during a segment he shot for Nightly News following a massive gay rights rally in Washington.”

CBS’ Michelle Levi made her debut in front of the camera on “Washington Unplugged” Friday. She’s one of the daily webcast’s producers.

NEWS NOTES

Richard Gere turns the camera on two of our fave Politico reporters.

AWARDS & EVENTS

Check out Washington Examiner Yeas & Nays columnist Kiki Ryan enjoying truffle fries at Poste wrapped in her own column…

Speaking of good eats, Playbook spotted Wolf Blitzer dining with Rahm Emanuel at BLT last night. And for the newest edition of Washington Unplugged‘s series “Unplugged and Under 40,” CBS was at Good Stuff Eatery on Capitol Hill yesterday to interview celebrity chef Spike.

Get ready to wish Qorvis’ Kelley McCormick a happy birthday tomorrow. Until then, what we know and what we’re reading this Tuesday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | RADIO | BOOKS | NEWS NOTES | JOBS

NEWSPAPERS

NYT points out the downturn in print media is really hurting photojournalists. “Newspapers and magazines are cutting back sharply on picture budgets or going out of business altogether. Pictures and video shot by amateurs on cellphones are posted to Web sites minutes after events occur. Photographers trying to make a living from shooting the news are calling it a crisis.”

E&P has announced ten newspapers that “do it right,” including: Las Vegas Sun, Sioux City Journal (IA), Briefing (Dallas, TX), The Post-Star (Glen Falls, NY), East Bay Express (Emeryville, CA), Star Tribune Minneapolis, St. Petersburg Times (FL), The Daily Independent (Ridgecrest, CA), New Times (Phoenix) and the Cincinnati Enquirer.

TV

In last night’s “Talking Points Memo” segment, Bill O’Reilly highlighted Fox’s ratings surge. “Fox News explodes, while the liberal media burns.” He goes on, “A major reason is the healthcare debate… When we cover the town hall meetings we don’t describe the protesters as loons. We don’t denegrate people who disagree with Pres. Obama. That’s the difference between FOX News and all the others… The Factor also gives voice to both sides, something you will never see on NBC News.”

Meanwhile, on MSNBC, Keith Olbermann delivered a special comment on the healthcare debate, specifically the “orgy of fantasized violence and imagined revolution whose fires have been stoked for weeks, for months, for years by conservatives,” highlighting Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs.

Fox Business Network executives are in talks with Don Imus to bring his radio show to the 22-month-old network. AllYourTV.com, which first reported the news Friday night, reports the show “could make the move as early as September 1.” A FBN spokesperson said, “We’re always talking to interesting talent.” (h/t TVNewser)

Past Tense yoga studio offers Congressional staffers and reporters a chance to unwind, with a special “restorative recess” of their own. The studio is extending a special discount to all journalists and Congressional staffers with a valid ID to take a single yoga class for $10, instead of the regular price of $15 a session.
NEWSPAPERS

How did the NYT print a story about Walter Cronkite with seven errors? Public editor Clark Hoyt says: “Even a newspaper like the Times, with layers of editing to ensure accuracy, can go off the rails when communication is poor, individuals do not bear down hard enough, and they make assumptions about what others have done.”

The newspaper industry may not be in the best shape, but one section is doing just fine- obits, as pointed out by WaPo ombudsman Andrew Alexander.

The New York Post hired a clown, an actual clown to roam the hallways of the New York State Capitol. Who will be the first publication to replicate here in DC??

TV

Do MSNBC and Fox have a truce deal? NYT ran a front-page story Saturday saying that News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch and GE’s Jeffrey Immelt instructed lieutenants to arrange a cease-fire between MSNBC and Fox News. A source tells TVNewser: “There’s more to this story than is being reported.”

Good morning FishbowlDC!

Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line.

Its day 91 covering the Obama administration and week 12 for us. Happy Birthday to Politico’s Carol Lee. What we know and what we’re reading this Monday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | ONLINE | NEWS NOTES | WEST WING REPORTAGE | AWARDS | JOBS | REVOLVING DOOR

NEWSPAPERS

Former Senator Rick Santorum makes $1,750 per column at the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Politico’s Mike Allen addresses critics over the paper and site’s “torture memo” story here.

TV

On the Daily Beast, 7 Best Moments From Sunday Talk.

ABC’s Sam Donaldson on This Week says he’s like to ask Fidel Castro before he dies if he killed President John F. Kennedy. “In his dying breath I’d like to be at [Castro's] bedside and say, did you do it? Meaning November 22, 1963.”

Is PBS “recklessly promoting” Al Jazeera? Via Romenesko: Fox News’ Eric Shawn is concerned about public TV’s “WorldFocus” airing reports from Al Jazeera English, while PBS ombud Michael Getler isn’t so bothered. “I think it is a plus for American viewers to see and understand what is on Al Jazeera English, and that viewers of public broadcasting are quite able to make up their own minds about whether what they are watching has news value or is propaganda.”

Radio talk show host and regular cable news guest Michael Smerconish was on CNN’s Reliable Sources this weekend to talk about his new book “Morning Drive: Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Talking.” Check out his dish about Fox News’ Glenn Beck, NBC’s David Gregory and CNN’s Larry King here.

NYT‘s David Carr: Cable news stations have been criticized for “event-izing” all manner of minor news occurrences — President Obama’s first news conference comes to mind. But the Tax Day Tea Party was all but conceived, executed and deconstructed in the hothouse of cable news wars.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer returned to his grad school at Johns Hopkins last week to deliver a speech “President Obama and the World.” More at Yeas & Nays.

TWT’s “Anguish of story can haunt journlists“: Journalists who peer into the abyss of war, crime, and natural disasters as part of their jobs can end up as emotionally scarred as the victims they never imagined joining. “Journalists can experience powerful frustration and demoralization,” said Dr. Frank M. Ochberg a psychologist who specializes in trauma.

Also from TWT- a sitdown with “State of Play” director Kevin Macdonald. “There have been plenty of Washington-set political thrillers, so he tried to make his new by ‘approaching the characters in a different way” and “showing Washington in a different way.’”
