Quotes of the Day

RAINING IN THE ROSE GARDEN: “Overheard: ‘Melt the Press.’ @MarkLandler of NYT pops out a Georgetown umbrella.” — NPR White House Correspondent Ari Shapiro with the accompanying photograph. And NBC’s Luke Russert: “The #Marines holding the umbrellas at this presser are unbelievably cool, had no idea there’s military protocol for umbrella holding.”

“In my first job as a sports reporter, my editor had me hold the umbrella over him & his camera on the sidelines. Good times.” — HotAir’s Mary Katharine Ham.

“So much happening-impt stuff must be slipping by for bandwidth lack. Just in my niche, turned in 7 stories in past 4 days & 8th mostly done.” — NYT‘s Charlie Savage.

ABC “Scandal” finale fallout

“So Fitz is porking a black woman to bring diversity to the Republican Party? Wow. #StartedFromATwerkNowWereHere” — Javonni Brustow, Washington editor of The DC Pundit.

“Oh damn Fitz just went rogue! And quotes Dillon Thomas to boot!” — Essence and theGrio.com‘s Sophia Nelson.

“When @tonygoldwyn saw this two page monologue for the first time at the table read, he gasped. Then he dove in.” — Scandal creator and writer Shonda Rhimes.

“Mellie is going to fuck everybody. #Scandal” — @emokidsloveme.

“Liv. #shutitdown and call a locksmith.” — Avid “Scandal” watcher Shawna Thomas of NBC News as Olivia Pope nearly gets killed. And later, after Fitz sees a video in which Olivia, his mistress, has sex with another man, she writes, “OK Fitz. She is not a virgin nor your wife and she didn’t know that guy was charged w/ bedding/protecting her. STOP BEING A CHILD.”

“Can’t even type. This ending kills me! #scandalfinale” — Actress Kerry Washington, who plays Olivia Pope.

“Lemme get this straight, the season finale of Scandal is on during #ScandalWeek? THIS TOWN” — TPM Assistant Editor Igor Bobic.

“I vividly remember my first time watching ‘The Office.’ It was May 2005, on my laptop, on a train from Baltimore to NY.” — NYT‘s Brian Stelter.
Journo annoyed by mouth breather

“This kid who is mouth breathing next to me really needs to get off the train. Can’t deal. #imsoannoying” — Roll Call‘s Emily Cahn.

Separated at Birth: Politico’s Robillard

Sometimes a Separated at Birth goes in wildly different directions. Today is one of those days as we match Politico Pro reporter Kevin Robillard with a younger version of NBC’s Luke Russert and the late Chris Farley.

Want an Oyster Named for You and a Free Party?

You’re a journalist. Come on, you love to see your byline. So we have an unusually fishy idea: name an Oyster after yourself (or a coworker) and have the name immortalized forever. P.J. Clarke’s is introducing its’ own signature oyster on Tuesday, with its name to be chosen by secret ballot.

Brad Blynier, one of the owners of the War Shore Oyster Company, the company that’s harvesting the exclusive oyster for the restaurant, describes the oyster as “farm raised, premium cocktail-sized and has a robust brininess with a clean, mild and sweet finish.”

Based on the oyster’s characteristics, we’ve come up with naming suggestions but feel free to come up with your own (write us at Betsy@mediabistro.com, fishbowldc@mediabistro.com or use our Anonymous Tips button):

The Badass Oyster: Do we even need to name the journalist who comes to work with a chain tied to his waste? That’d be BuzzFeed D.C. Bureau Chief John Stanton. The Meghan: For Meghan McCain, a tart oyster served naked of its shell; The Rose Garden: after The Daily Caller‘s Neil Munro, an oyster served live and will never shut up. The Burger Oyster: it’s cocktail-sized, after all, and has former TIME scribe and professional partygoer Tim Burger written all over it. To spice things up, we have The Rosie: sweet, tart and can cuss like a sailor for BuzzFeed‘s Rosie Gray (and we mean nothing by the tart, only that it’s a flavor that might be present in an oyster.). The Bob Schieffer, farm raised, but still clean and sweet– an undeniable D.C. institution. The Hardball Oyster: All robust and briny things should be named after MSNBC host Chris Matthews, shouldn’t they? The Pothead Oyster: all laid back and smooth, HuffPost‘s Sam Stein. The Howeeza: after mild, sweet Judy Kurtz from The Hill. The Ezzy: serious and wonky with a touch of lemon and an aroma of fresh figs for WaPo‘s favorite “f–k you” blogger Ezra Klein. The Weingarten: a little sour-aftertaste for D.C.’s ultimate curmudgeon, WaPo‘s Gene Weingarten. The Luke: for MSNBC’s Luke Russert, a very meaty oyster; “Shorty” the Jake Sherman oyster. The Stealth Spunkster: she’s everywhere and nowhere all at once after Hollywood on the Potomac‘s Janet Donovan; and The Lady: the always well-mannered and comedy-laced Neda Semnani from Roll Call‘s HOH. The Angry Oyster: Can you guess? That’d be Tim Grieve, who just gave Politico the middle finger and bolted to National Journal. The Fresh Mouthed Oyster: Politico‘s own salty tweeter Ben White, who likes to share his crappy hotel experiences. Hey, maybe this time the Jefferson Hotel will actually hold a reservation for him or the W will give him a room that doesn’t place the bathroom in the foyer. The Potty Mouthed Oyster: Mike Elk, a brusque, sharp-flavored oyster for the labor journo who swears more than any other. The Shooter: Who else? After the gun activist journalist herself, Emily Miller of TWT. And finally, we offer The Boyle: for you-know-who, the always all blown up Matthew Boyle of Breitbart News.

Do not stop reading. We’re not kidding. Here’s the fun part… continued…

White House Soup of the Day

The White House Soup of the Day, as first reported by MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown” is…

Split Pea.

“Every time I host it’s split pea,” said fill-in host Luke Russert. “We’re on the same soup spectrum here.”

On an unrelated but interesting note… among Russert’s guests on the program today was Democratic strategist and pundit James Carville, a longtime friend of his late father, Tim Russert, who appeared often on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

How Can I Make It All About Me?

When something of national or global importance happens, many people feel the need to share how they relate. Most people would do this in a journal or a personal blog. Erin Burnett, who is Catholic, did it on CNN from Rome last night. NBC News’s Luke Russert gets to do it on a national news website.

The Catholic church elected a new pope Wednesday. That’s a moment of major significance for Catholics for its religious implications but also interesting to the world because of how old the institution is. Here’s what the moment meant for Russert, in his words on msnbc.com:

”I was blessed personally by Pope John Paul II twice: once in my mother’s womb and another time when I was an infant. I attended CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) from when I was six years old till I was fourteen. The church is where I’ve been baptized, confirmed, where I’ve confessed and have even gotten to be a godfather. I graduated from one the world’s preeminent Catholic universities and to this day try to attend Mass (and never miss it on days of obligation). I’m that rare twenty-seven year old that proudly still feels a strong connection to my Catholic faith …”

Russert is rare.

It’s also a serious moment for the congressional reporter to offer some unsolicited sacred advice to the newly elected Pope Francis. continued…

The Academy Awards last night served as the perfect occasion for NBC congressional correspondent Luke Russert to have his own red carpet moment.

“What I’m wearing? St. John’s Bay and hat from The Chicken Box,” he tweeted. Attached was a photo of Russert beaming in a red cap, plaid button-down shirt and a black v-neck T-shirt, just right for exposing an ideal amount of chest hair.

The Chicken Box is a bar in Nantucket, Mass., that features live music.

It wasn’t the only fashion point for Russert this weekend… continued…

Rep. Steve Cohen: A Tale of the Tape

It was a turn-of-events all but written for a Days of Our Lives episode. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) was seen trading seemingly flirtatious tweets with a young, attractive blonde during the State of the Union speech.

The woman, a co-ed named Victoria Brink, we come to find out, is his secret daughter (pictured at right).

How it progressed…

New York magazine reported on the incident the day after SOTU last week, calling Cohen’s tweets “flirty.” And reasonably so. The whole thing was like a replay of the Anthony Weiner scandal, minus boner shots. “Happy Valentines beautiful girl. [I love you]” was among the tweets sent to Brink by Cohen.

Feeding into the weirdness was Cohen’s flack, Michael Pagan, who told New York that Brink is “the daughter of a longtime friend” of Cohen’s and that Cohen has “known her pretty much her whole life.”

Judy Kurtz and Alexandra Jaffe at The Hill double bylined a story that ran a little more than an hour later with very similar content to New York‘s, with additional details on Brink being a college student and aspiring model. Kurtz and Jaffe got a link from the Drudge Report.

The Free Beacon wrote up the story, calling Brink a “groupie” that “hollered” at Cohen.

Later that evening, RedState asked if Cohen was “schtupping his buddy’s daughter?”

It wasn’t until NBC’s Luke Russert swooped in on a white horse (a very large horse) to make the big reveal: “Cohen (D-Tenn.) tells me woman he tweeted during SOTU is in fact his daughter, he only learned of her 3 yrs ago,” Russert wrote on Twitter.

O.M.G.

The next day, WaPo‘s Reliable Source column reported on the entire matter linking to nothing but other WaPo stories. (Why not make it look like you rolled in late as usual or that you didn’t actually break the story?)

Aftermath… continued…

Anonymous Sources for Valentine’s Day

In elementary school, it’s a common tradition for awkward children to pass out little “Power Rangers” and “Bratz” cards on Valentine’s Day to all of their classmates. The cards usually have messages like “You Rock! XOXO” and “Cool, Dude! XOXO”

This year, FishbowlDC would like to serve as a forum for something similar. We will take both anonymous and named Valentine’s to post here on Wednesday.

The messages should be heartfelt but simple. Try not to ramble. A few examples:

Hey, John Podhoretz, off the record: You big, hairy beast. I’ve been meaning to tell you how sexy you are.

Jonathan Capehart, Brianna Keilar, Mark Leibovich, there are some things I’d like to say to you on background. Deep background.

I don’t want to bury the lede, Luke Russert: Check out my nut graf.

V-Day greetings can be sent to us using the anonymous tip box at the top right of the page or by personally emailing them to us at fishbowldc@mediabistro.com or to Betsy@mediabistro.com, scarryFBDC@gmail.com or fishbowlpeter@gmail.com. Do include your name if you wish.

TNR Sparkles at Bibiana

By Eddie Scarry and Betsy Rothstein

The New Republic celebrated its relaunch last night at Bibiana Restaurant where politicos and journalists from print and TV mingled with bigwigs like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.J.) and Americans for Tax Reform Prez Grover Norquist over hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. The highlight of the evening: Answering the question, “Who is Franklin Foer?”

Meanwhile, we spoke to Publisher and Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, who was all smiles and relaxed. “I’m feeling super exited, energized,” he said, as we cornered him at the bar. “It’s a big moment for us.” Asked if he’s been sleeping, he replied, “I will sleep tonight.”

At around 7:30 p.m. FishbowlDC approached a man with glasses who we mistook for NYT‘s Nate Silver. We were all ready to ask if he was excited to be in the same room as Politico‘s Dylan Byers, who during the presidential election questioned whether Silver was a “one-term celebrity.”

The mystery man in question had a laugh with two other male attendees before denying that he was Silver. Except then he said he was Silver. Then said he wasn’t. Then someone else said he was. Finally, he identified himself as Franklin Foer, editor of TNR (pictured above). But by that point, we didn’t believe that either.

After consulting Google images, it was revealed that he was indeed Foer. It was our mistake, though Foer did acknowledge that he shares “some Semitic features” with Silver.

In a party speech, Hughes said the challenge ahead is to “produce a magazine 20 times a year that is as good” as the relaunch issue, which features an interview with President Obama. He called the TNR team “the best in the business” and said he wants the magazine to “become financially sustainable in the coming years.” In a moment that drew audible awes from the crowd, he admitted, “The day that Frank Foer agreed to come back to TNR was one of the best days of my life.”

Who showed up? See more pictures. continued…

Goo Goo Dolls Founder Detests Rush, Loves Maddow, O’Reilly and Jesse Jackson Sr.

Johnny Rzeznik, guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and founder of the Goo Goo Dolls, was in Washington, D.C. over the weekend to perform at the Creative Coalition Inaugural Ball. We caught up with him this afternoon by phone to pester him about his media preferences and ask about the low and high points of his weekend. Asked if we should call him John or Johnny, he told us men call him “John” and women call him “Johnny.” He doesn’t know why that is. At the conclusion of the interview, we asked if there was anything more he wanted to tell us. As a matter of fact, there was. Their tenth album, Magnetic, is coming out on May 7. The first single is called “Rebel Beat” and is already being played on radio stations. “We’re all really excited to get out there and play our new album, which is upbeat and very positive,” said Rzeznik. “It’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.”

What was the highlight of Inauguration for you? The highlight for me was standing int he press line during the red carpet and seeing Jesse Jackson Sr. standing right next to us. He’s just one of those people who has an aura about him when he walks in a room. Also, doing the show. That’s why we came to town. That was really exciting. It was a real honor to be asked to be part of that celebration because they do a lot of great work on behalf of the arts.

Are you an Obama supporter? I definitely supported him in the last election. I couldn’t get behind the Republicans’ views on women’s issues and marriage equality. I don’t know, I just felt like they are really out of touch with what is going on in America. Just like Joe the cabdriver, it’s the same thing. Joe the cabdriver gets to have a political opinion, so I’m entitled to mine.

What do you like and hate about Washington? I love the Smithsonian. I’m a real dork for that kind of stuff. I love Georgetown, I love all the row houses, I love the feel and energy of this city. The only thing I hate is the traffic and I live in LA. It’s a beautiful city and it’s got so much character and it’s old and I like it.

Who are your favorite members of the media? I enjoy watching Chris Matthews a lot. He reminds me of a throwback to the older school kind of pundits like Tim Russert. I like George Will, I don’t agree with him particularly, but he’s probably the smartest conservative out there. I refuse to listen to Rush Limbaugh. I listen to a lot of conservative radio when I drive around in my car. I refuse to listen to him because he’s just ridiculous, just a clown. I love Rachel Maddow obviously. Jon Stewart. I know it’s a comedy show, but its probably one of the most informative shows out there. Stephanie Miller! I love her! Like ughhh, she’s the best. I agree with her views on issues, I think they check her facts pretty carefully. She’s got an insane sense of humor. It’s nice to see Tim Russert’s son [Luke Russert] in there and doing well too. I was brought up in a very blue collar, Democratic, pro-union house and that’s soaked into your DNA.

Do you have an opinion about Beyoncé lip syncing America the Beautiful? There’s no question in my mind that even if it was a computer playing it back because it was 20 degrees outside, she actually sang whatever on the page. She is brilliant. When you’re in situations like that and the whole world is watching on television, no one plays live on the Super Bowl. There’s no time for a mistake. Could she have sang that live? Absolutely. It was freezing out there. Unless you know how incredibly hard it is to sing when it’s 25 degrees out there, your opinion means nothing.

Have you ever been burned by the media? No. Not really. Maybe a nasty review of my work in a magazine, but who cares?

Does TMZ follow you around? I’m not dating an actress or a supermodel. Nobody is throwing me out of Hyde.

What networks or cable shows do you prefer? I do watch Fox. Sometimes I really enjoy watching Bill O’Reilly. It’s interesting because the older he gets, the more moderate he seems to get. Sort of like watching the end of how the Grinch stole Christmas. I still have hope for him. I can’t discount that everyone I’ve mentioned is part of an agenda. There is no fairness doctrine with the media and you spend time watching everyone and give them equal time.

Morning Chatter

QUOTES of the DAY

Is this war?

“The Breitbart crew’s terrible reporting on Boehner makes a great case for the value of the traditional media that the site hates.” — Politico‘s Alexander Burns.

Howard Fineman’s rant against ESPN, Luke Russert

HuffPost and MSNBC’s Howard Fineman, usually a mild-mannered Washington journalist, went on quite a tirade last night against what he believes to be the shoddy reporting of ESPN and the apparent stupidity of NBC’s Luke Russert. 1. 9:25 p.m. “Luke Russert u have no idea what you are talking about.” 2. 9:43 p.m. “Luke Russert nobody cares about ice hockey, and I say that as an alum of hockey-mad Colgate. Frozen Four gets two back page columns in NYT.” 3. 9:45 p.m. “ESPN announcers continuing to make excuses for lame Florida and trash Louisville. Also they keep misusing the word ‘disinterested.’” His rant went on after midnight. 4. 12:16 a.m. “I’m sorry. The lackadaisical, grudging ESPN coverage of Louisville’s dismantling of Florida was infuriating, at least to me.”

NYT Bureau Chief praises D.C. area Sichuan

“I remain pleasantly surprised by Sichuan quality in DC burbs.” — David Leonhardt, Washington Bureau Chief for the NYT. Last night Leonhardt was discussing the Asian cuisine with Reuters finance blogger Felix Salmon, who wrote, “Sushi Yasuda. And NY’s Szechuan chefs move around a lot.” And added, “I went to Lan Sheng today, spectacular. And Hot Kitchen is still amazing too. Not sure if GS is a chain.” (By the way, both Sichuan and Szechuan are acceptable spellings of the word, so neither journalist got it wrong.)

Peter Ogburn contributed to this report.

12 Things We Never Tire of in the Fishbowl

By Betsy Rothstein, Peter Ogburn and Eddie Scarry

We know you have one more year-end list in you. Or maybe you don’t. But wake up anyhow because here’s ours — the 12 things that never, ever make us want to take an afternoon snooze.

12. NBC Luke Russert‘s loud and fratboyish ways. Even House Speaker John Boehner has noted his decibel level and called him “loudmouth.” Though he’ll never get White House Soup of the Day quite right when he subs for Chuck Todd on “The Daily Rundown,” among our favorite moments with Luke this year was when he had a stop and smell the roses moment at a Nats game and took a picture of a spellbinding dragonfly, which he later posted on Twitter. Perhaps more poignantly though was when he covered a Capitol Hill presser and asked House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi if she was too old to remain in the Democratic leadership. The crowd of female lawmakers openly booed him. Pelosi told him he was offensive, even if he didn’t quite get it. Among the most entertaining comments sprang from CNN’s Hilary Rosen, who wrote on Twitter, “Note to Luke Russert: Mitch McConnell is 70, Harry Reid is 73. Oh and Bob Schieffer is 75. Think they should step aside? #NewGuysRule?” The question wasn’t an inappropriate one to raise, as lawmakers themselves had been discussing it out of earshot of Pelosi. Perhaps, as some noted, the time and setting and brash way in which Russert executed his questions were troublesome. Still, we especially enjoyed the commenters on Politico. There was the irate Wendy: “Luke Russert got his ass handed back to him. Any more questions, punk?” And the more sensible Chance: “Reporters should be asking tough, offensive and even stupid questions.”

11. Video journalist Michelle Fields flashing her breasts on national TV to get a job for Fox News. Her large male online contingency didn’t mind it much, either. In the meantime The Daily Caller gave her the axe for being lazy. Somehow Executive Editor David Martosko‘s lectures didn’t work? Favorite 2012 memory: There was the January manifesto from a convicted rapist that Michelle showed off on Facebook. But we’re torn between that and the more recent BuzzFeed party, where she unashamedly performed dramatic hair flips as our own Eddie Scarry snapped pictures.

10. Most things Matthew Boyle. The 20-something dogged journo never ceases to amaze. There was the time he insisted that the President of the Free World should allow him over for an interview. The more recent jaw-dropping moment from Boyle came when he fled The Daily Caller for Breitbart.com because he wants to be the next Andrew Breitbart. He started this adventure by taking his own photograph for the site, giving himself the unfortunate look of a triple-chinned Michelin Man. In his opening story out of the gate, he wrote an atrociously unedited right-wing rant about “magic vaginas.” We’re still not sure what those our, except we think they don’t involve Sandra Fluke. It was perfect. And terrible. And because we love Boyle in our own special way, we’d like to kidnap and deprogram him before it’s too late and the goose is boiled. Stick to breaking news Boyle and it’ll be just fine. And whatever you do, don’t stay there long.

9. Inside stories from The Washington Times. Always weird, unexpected, mind-boggling happenings at the ominous building off New York Avenue. Who can forget when former writer Julia Duin publicly accused then-editor Sam Dealey of verbally abusing her by canning her on the very day she decided to bring her daughter to work? She was also reportedly on crutches that day. And then there’s the more recent spate of stories concerning the impending layoffs coming in early 2013. The newsroom has dubbed their CEO Larry Beasley “Evil Santa” for a number of reasons, including recently moving a new sofa into his office while deciding whom to lay off. He also recently displayed a Santa doll holding a Christmas tree with the word “joy” on it. As the journalists await possible pink slips, they’re anything but joyful.
