As we also know from this morning’s antics, Slate‘s Dave Weigel is also attending and has hopefully arrived safe and sound without his plane suffering any engine trouble. “We’re going to talk about how this country can get back on the right track, if that’s possible,” Smiley told FishbowlDC in a phone interview on Thursday morning. (Horribly, I completely spaced our Wednesday interview and he agreed to chat with me Thursday. When I answered the phone and apologized profusely, he said, “I’m just happy when you answer the phone. Turns me on.” Laughter ensued. A well-deserved crack for standing him up.)

Anyway, back to the interview and getting the country back on track. “There is so much happening in Washington in our body politic,” he’s saying. Asked if he thinks our country can get on a better path, he said, “I think America’s a great country, but I think we have to be on the right track on this divided government that we have to endure. I think the president squandered some time. He could have been more aggressive in the past two years.”

Smiley’s media diet in Washington includes a brief buttering up of our sister site, FishbowlLA, and FishbowlDC: “Oh man, I read most everything online. I live in LA. I’m swimming in the Fishbowl every day, every other day.” When in Washington, Smiley prefers boutique hotels like the Hotel George. But this time he’s staying at the host hotel, the Madison Loews. As for eating, he says he always ends up at Georgia Browns and Ben’s Chili Bowl.

Fox News vs. the White House…

Above, White House communications director Anita Dunna again commented on Fox News, this time on CNN’s “Reliable Sources with Howard Kurtz” on Sunday. “The reality of it is that Fox often operates almost as either the research arm or the communications arm of the Republican Party,” Dunn said in the interview posted above.

NYT: “Attacking the news media is a time-honored White House tactic but to an unusual degree, the Obama administration has narrowed its sights to one specific organization, the Fox News Channel, calling it, in essence, part of the political opposition.”

In other TV news…

PBS’ “Frontline” premieres a new season tomorrow with “Obama’s War,” a documentary on the war in Afghanistan, which includes an interview with General Stanley A. McChrystal. Preview here.

ABC’s Cynthia McFadden will sit down with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Moscow for an interview to air on “Nightline,” “GMA” and “World News Tonight” Wednesday. More dets here.

Jamie Gangel had an exclusive with Rush Limbaugh for “Today” and NBC platforms. Part one is here and part two airs tomorrow. On the media, Limbaugh said, “I know how to yank their chain” (h/t TVNewser).

Politico on Think Progress.

HuffPost has launched a new section today on hot-button issues. “Impact” includes a widget so that readers can “plot a course of action,” if they want to donate to a cause, for example (h/t NYO).

And HuffPost notes: “Progressive bloggers were in an uproar Sunday night after a White House “adviser,” speaking on condition of anonymity, urged them to “take off their pajamas” and get serious about politics. NBC White House correspondent John Harwood relayed the quote during a segment he shot for Nightly News following a massive gay rights rally in Washington.”

CBS’ Michelle Levi made her debut in front of the camera on “Washington Unplugged” Friday. She’s one of the daily webcast’s producers.

CNN’s Susan Roesgen‘s contract will not be renewed and she will be leaving the network, TVNewser reports. She was criticized for her coverage at the tax day tea parties in April, when she said the event she was covering was, “anti-CNN since this is highly promoted by the right-wing, conservative network Fox.”

LAT: In a new television spot, CNN proclaims it is “No. 1, with more viewers than Fox and MSNBC.” The ad goes on to say that CNN has held the top spot for seven years in a row. This came as a news flash to Fox and MSNBC, considering that both top CNN in the ratings.

“Breakroom Live” is getting yanked by Air America, Mediaite reports. The show, daily at 3pm, is a live Webcast starring Air America stalwarts Sam Seder and Marc Maron. The hosts announced the move on Twitter, and engaged in a final show that was only slightly bitter.

CNBC’s John Harwood also gets an interview with the President tomorrow to discuss financial regulation, health care, the economic recovery plan and the deficit, among other topics, according to CNBC’s release. That interview airs at 4pm during CNBC’s “Closing Bell” with Maria Bartiromo.

Topics will include the economy, the Presidential election, housing, the subprime market, Greenspan, interest rates and Bernanke’s job as Fed Chairman and energy independence.

Now, “Hardball” is an opinion show, and Matthews is certainly entitled to his opinions – however offensively he chooses to express them.

But why should any Republican candidate expect fairness from Matthews now?

More to the point, why should potential voters expect Matthews to treat the candidates’ views fairly?

By engaging in this sort of intemperate rhetoric, Matthews has effectively disqualified himself as an “honest broker” for this coming debate.

NBC needs to replace him as a debate moderator immediately. The job – by definition – requires an attempt to display objectivity going into an event.

CNBC’s Larry Kudlow, who will host the post-debate show, called Matthews remarks “stupid” and said that he would “rap him very, very hard” if he wasn’t on “his best behavior” during Tuesday’s GOP debate in Michigan.

Fox News continued to stay on the story, bringing it up over the weekend, and even this morning. Carl Bernstein appeared on Fox on Saturday, but defended Matthews.
