Warning: ‘One more and you’re blocked‘

“Periodically it becomes clear that I need to warn folks: I block birthers (and truthers). Keep that nonsense out of my twitter feed. Thanks.” — ABC White House correspondent Jake Tapper in a Monday tweet. He warned one potential birther, saying, “One more birther question and you’re blocked.”

The new Howie – what will he be like?

“Drop some F-bombs? No, my tone at the Daily Beast will be familiar to those who followed my WP blog. Only funnier.” CNN and soon-to-be Daily Beast D.C. Bureau Chief Howard Kurtz in a Twitter interview with Mediashift’s Mark Glaser.

Journo’s mom has something to say

“My mother has posted 5 comments on my Facebook wall today. Will she make it to a baker’s dozen?” — Media Matters columnist Karl Frisch in a recent tweet.

Politician writes touching, fried tweet

“I’m lucky 2 have this prayer answered a # of times over:”God grant me at least 1 fried [sic] who truly knows me & is still my friend anyway, ” writes Newark Mayor Cory Booker in a Monday night tweet. (The editors in us couldn’t resist this one – we couldn’t tell, was he joking?)

Good morning Washington. It’s Carl Kasell’s birthday! Charlie Rose is coming to town! Here’s everything you’ve ever wanted to know about George Stephanopoulos. It’s the birthday of Thomas Jefferson, but more importantly, it’s the birthday of that thing that helps you answer the important question: Is my story idea new? (LexisNexis).

And OMG, first we get our first museum and now our own social network?!? Happy days are here again.

Today’s “Angry Journalist” rant of the day: “I’m angry that I’m 36 years old, make $36K a year, and I’ve apparently peaked.

Slate’s Jack Shafer writes, “Whenever the economy starts to slide southward, the press starts sprouting horror stories spout about how ‘tax revenue shortfalls’ are starving state governments. Today’s (March 31) Washington Post Page One piece — ‘States Are Hit Hard by Economic Downturn: Many Cutbacks Felt by Most Needy’ — repeats so many of the genre’s clichés that the writers could have assembled the piece from memory.”

PBS’s MediaShift Mark Glaser writes, “Last week, I had the honor of giving a speech at Arkansas State University, as part of their Lecture & Concert series — at least, once I made it through the mechanical mayhem of American Airlines cancelling dozens of flights the same day I flew out. I also got to address a few classes in the College of Communications there, and meet with students who put together the school newspaper. It was heartening that out in the middle of the heartland of the U.S., classes on citizen journalism and public affairs reporting are being taken seriously. Plus, the students who work on the school newspaper (and who get paid to do so!) have been adding lots of original video reports to the newspaper’s website.”

Wired reports, “It looks like AOL is putting the pedal to the metal after its Third Screen Media acquisition. Today the web portal announced a partnership with NY-based Cellufun to launch a ad-supported mobile gaming portal. The end result fits well with AOL’s mobile aspirations: Cellufun will provide AOL’s mobile games channel with its social gaming chops, while the recently acquired Third Screen Media is slated to handle banner advertising for the portal.”

WebProNews.com reports, “Columnist Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times opened up a group page with social networking darling Facebook to share photos and ideas from his travels.
Kristof may have the investigative journalism business down to a fine art, but the dual Pulitzer winner finds himself embracing a challenge on a different realm than the world of Darfurs and Tibetan protests he faces today.”

Recovering Journalist writes, “The latest edition of the Newseum opens in Washington in a couple of weeks, and John Robinson points out that admission will be $20 for adults. Twenty bucks? Excuse me?? Look, I know museum construction and operation is expensive, and somebody’s got to foot the $450 million bill for multiple interactive news displays. the ’4-D time-travel experience,’ the TV news chopper hanging in the middle of the museum and all of the other bells and whistles. But I thought that was why Freedom Forum, Gannett’s house charity, and other corporate sponsors were paying for this exercise in news industry self-indulgency in the first place.”

Dana Milbank writes, “It took many months and the mockery of ‘Saturday Night Live’ to make it happen, but the lumbering beast that is the press corps finally roused itself from its slumber Monday and greeted Barack Obama with a menacing growl. The day before primaries in Ohio and Texas that could effectively seal the Democratic presidential nomination for him, a smiling Obama strode out to a news conference at a veterans facility here. But the grin was quickly replaced by the surprised look of a man bitten by his own dog. Reporters from the Associated Press and Reuters went after him for his false denial that a campaign aide had held a secret meeting with Canadian officials over Obama’s trade policy. A trio of Chicago reporters pummeled him with questions about the corruption trial this week of a friend and supporter. The New York Post piled on with a question about him losing the Jewish vote.”

But the highly paid scandal-fixer barely conceals his rage toward some people in his new memoir, ‘In the Ring.’ Bennett heaps scorn on New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. in the chapter in which he recalls his defense of Times reporter Judith Miller, who went to jail rather than reveal her sources in reporting on CIA operative Valerie Plame.”

Crain’s New York reports, “For the past few months, people across the United States have taken part in a closely fought contest, full of twists and turns, that has finally produced an unexpected winner. That’s right: There’s a new front-runner in the cable news race. Buoyed by a historic Democratic primary season that has drawn new voters—and new viewers — CNN’s prime-time audience of 25- to 54-year-olds soared 150% in February over year-earlier levels. The boost gave the Time Warner-owned channel its first victory over the Fox News Channel in six years.”

We hear NewsChannel 8 would not air last week’s Q&A Cafe interview with NBC 4′s meteorologist Bob Ryan, because they consider him the competition. The program will, however, air on DC Cable/TV 16 this Friday, because they don’t think of him as competition. The full interview is now available on YouTube.

Good morning Washington. One year ago we said goodbye to Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. and AP said hello (again) to Ron Fournier. It’s the birthday of Alexander Graham Bell, Jessica Biel and, yes, me, which is the closest I’ll ever get to the lovely Biel. And to answer your questions: 1.) No, I don’t feel older, 2.) I was sick of my 20s anyway and 3.) A flat screen tv would be great, thanks.

Prime-time ratings declined last month compared with the same period in 2007 for nearly all Washington stations, which because of the strike aired more reruns and reality programming. The dip in prime-time viewership in turn affected ratings for some of the station’s late-night and early-morning newscasts.”

Instead, the Times pointed its finger at a television station in the Republican South. This is a spin-off from the recent 60 Minutes story that apparently claimed it was Karl Rove’s fault that former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman was convicted of bribery and mail fraud. I haven’t followed that story closely, assuming that it is another 60 Minutes hoax.”

“FaithfulAmerica.org, now operated by Faith in Public Life, sent a letter individually signed by 9,000 people of faith to the polling directors at the media organizations that sponsor the presidential primary exit polls. The letter asks ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox and the AP to stop stereotyping people of faith by asking all voters — Republicans and Democrats — the same religion questions on the exit poll surveys. We expressed particular concern that Republican voters in every state have been asked if they are evangelical, while Democrats have not been asked if they are evangelical in a single state.

Post I.T. writes, “Craig Newmark seems pretty content with his business, the hugely successful craigslist.org. He hasn’t accepted any outside funding, has declined offers to buy the site, and he doesn’t have any big plans to change its formats or features. So why was Newmark one of the keynote speakers this morning at the Southeast Venture Capital Conference in Tysons Corner? ‘I’m a curiosity,’ he said, sounding somewhat baffled by the attention he’s gotten since launching the site in 1995. The product hasn’t changed much.

The Telegraph reports, “Ten years ago, he was a reclusive, pasty-faced 31-year-old who, bashing away on his laptop in his grungy Hollywood apartment, shot to prominence when he threatened to bring down Bill Clinton’s presidency by breaking news of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Now, Matt Drudge owns a luxurious Mediterranean-style stucco house on Rivo Alto Island in Florida’s Biscayne Bay, a condominium at the Four Seasons in Miami and is said to drive a black Mustang.
