theGrio.com’s Perry Bacon, Jr. Promoted to Senior Political Reporter

perry.jpgAn internal memo distributed to the DC bureau of NBC News today names Perry Bacon, Jr. the network’s newest Senior Political Reporter. Bacon will work closely with Chuck Todd and Mark Murray and lead in coverage of the 2014 and 2016 campaigns.

Bacon most recently was political editor for theGrio.com and contributed to MSNBC. He’s well poised for his new role, having led theGrio’s coverage of the 2012 election and President Obama’s second term. Prior to that, he covered politics for TIME and The Washington Post.

The promotion is effective immediately.

Separated at Birth: Three Male Journos

They might be in different weight classes, but National Review‘s somewhat beefy Robert Costa looks similar to the more svelte Politico‘s Dave Catanese and NBC News Political Director Mark Murray. Our apologies for the sad state of these top tiny photographs — it’s Costa’s fault. He’s got nothing else out there. We’d be remiss if we didn’t show you how Catanese also resembles actor Patrick Duffy, who played J.R. Ewing‘s nicer younger brother, Bobby, on “Dallas.”

Courtovich Hosts Journos For Annual Gaucho

Courtovich took this pic of Gaucho decorations.

Jim Courtovich, managing partner of Kearsarge Global Advisers, hosted his annual Gaucho party Saturday night. And he delivered with a great menu (pineapple martinis and chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches were crowd pleaser), late night party (Bob Schieffer’s midnight appearance) and a stellar guest list…

Savannah Guthrie, Betsy Fischer, Jonathan Martin, Jessica Yellin, Matt Cooper, Tammy Haddad, Jeff Zeleny, Julie Mason, John Harwood, Karen Finney, Anne Kornblut, Kasie Hunt, Erin McPike, Sasha Issenberg, Kiki Ryan, Christine Delargy, Rick Klein, Mark Murray, Abby Livingston, Michael Falcone, Ashley Parker, Libby Leist, Amie Parnes, Jay Newton Small, Lizzie O’Leary, Athena Jones, Sunlen Miller and Phil Elliott were just some of the media-types in attendance.

Politico‘s Mike Allen and NYT‘s Mark Leibovich also just missed each other at the party.

Also: Austan Goolsbee, Stephanie Cutter, Juleanna Glover, Christina Sevilla, Michael Feldman, Jill Zuckman and Sasha Johnson.

NBC-WRC Wins DC Media Softball Championship, Shuster’s Really Proud

Shuster modestly shows off the MMSL championship trophy on MSNBC this afternoon.

David Shuster‘s anchoring MSNBC now, but this weekend he was leading NBC’s softball team to a first place finish in the Metropolitan Media Softball League’s championship– for the second year in a row.

Shuster took the opportunity to show off the trophy on MSNBC this afternoon to the backdrop of Queen’s “We are the Champions.” His co-anchor Tamron Hall was quite amused- “You’re my personal Derek Jeter,” she joked. Domenico Montanaro also got a shout-out from NBC Deputy Political Director Mark Murray, whose liveshot followed Shuster’s trophy lovefest.

WaPo, CBS, Albritton, TWT, ABC, the Examiner, the Express, WTTG Fox, the AP, USA Today, AOL, the National Press Club, Gazette and the Discovery Channel all have teams in the league. The Peacocks beat USA Today 11-0 yesterday for the championship and according to the league’s website, are the fourth team to win back-to-back titles.

But it wasn’t all Shuster- check out the rest of the NBC-WRC team below.

And more kudos– ABC’s Eric Wray was also honored this season with the Dale Solly Award for Sportsmanship and Camaraderie.

Mike Allen’s “Surprise” Birthday Party, Brought To You By Starbucks

Most of DC wakes up to him, even more of DC wonders if and when he ever sleeps, Politico’s Mike Allen never seems to stop.

So last night, co-hosts John Harris and Ann O’Hanlon, Jim and Autumn VandeHei, Mike Feldman, Betsy Fischer, Hilary Rosen, Jonathan Karl, Greta Van Susteren and John Coale thought it was about time for Mikey to let loose with a “surprise” birthday party at the home of one of DC’s best hosts Tammy Haddad.

And how do you go about surprising someone who knows everything going on in this town? Tammy and co. posed the party as a celebration of “President Obama’s 160 Days of Media.” The surprise was spoiled just a little before the party- Tammy had to fill Mike in to ensure his attendance.

Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, Ann Compton, John Dickerson, Rita Braver and Bob Barnett, Suzanne Malveaux, Nia-Malika Henderson, Savannah Guthrie, Judy Woodruff and Al Hunt, Debbie Dingell, Sam Feist, Steve Chaggaris, Querry Robinson, Roger Simon, Ann Schroeder Mullins, Lauren Vicary, Mark Murray, Sasha Johnson, Juleanna Glover, Janet Donovan, Edie Emery, Adam Verdugo, Carol Lee, Alex Burns, Michael Feldman, Ron Bonjean, Lynn Sweet, Bill Burton and Laura Capps, Gordon Johndroe and Austan Goolsbee, among many others, all donned “I Like Mike” campaign-ish buttons.

Harris and VandeHei each toasted their all-star, each saying that Mike had a bigger heart than any guy they’ve ever met.

Mike also gave a really gracious speech, joking that the party was sponsored by Starbucks and thanking Tammy and others for their friendship and hospitality, and God, quipping VandeHei thinks that’s a reference to him. VandeHei called him a “guy who will break more news before I’m done with this toast than I will in my career” and very appropriately, the “guy who gets up in the morning and reads all the papers so the rest of us don’t have to.”

Always the intrepid reporter, Mike even included a pool report in this morning’s Playbook:

POOL REPORT from Washington’s true bipartisan DMZ — TAMMY HADDAD’s YARD. Tammy (the one carrying two cameras, as well as throwing the party) had a few friends over to “Celebrate! President Obama’s 160 DAYS OF MEDIA, Hosted By John Harris and Ann O’Hanlon, Jim and Autumn VandeHei, Mike Feldman, Betsy Fischer, Jonathan Karl, Greta Van Susteren and John Coale, Hilary Rosen, Jonathan Martin, and Tammy Haddad.” Aided and abetted by the magic of Kim Kingsley. (hat tip: Mom)

THE CARTOON SPHYNX SAYS: Thank you for the love and amazing time, and for taking the time to appreciate and enjoy each other.

IT TURNS OUT THAT… even Michael Feldman would want to come back as Michael Feldman.

More party photos after the jump. Also, find out where Mike’s friends read his Playbook, courtesy of Politico‘s Patrick Gavin. We have to agree with Margaret Carlson- “Doesn’t everybody read it in bed?”

Marquardt Joins ABC, Jets Off To Moscow

Alexander Marquardt joins ABC from CNN today as a digital reporter based in Moscow. He’ll be reporting on all ABC News platforms, including “World News,” “Nightline,” and “Good Morning America.” At CNN, Marquardt was an embed reporter covering the Obama, Clinton and Biden campaigns, and before that, he was an anchor and correspondent at Channel One News.

Appropriately enough, Marquardt’s friends and colleagues gathered at Russia House this weekend to bid him “dasvidaniya!” Erin McPike, Mike Memoli, Sunlen Miller, Carrie Dann, Mark Murray, Jeff Zeleny, Bonnie Kapp, Matt Jaffe, Dan Reilly and Meg Reilly were among those who came out for some vodka shots in Marquardt’s honor.

NEWSPAPERS

NYT: Amazon has introduced a larger version of the Kindle, pitching it as a new way for people to read textbooks, newspapers, and documents. It also offered limited information about new partnerships that are intended to put Kindles in the hands of more university students and newspaper readers.

More follow-up on The Boston Globe: The proposal that the Boston Globe‘s largest union will present to its members tomorrow calls for an 8.3 percent wage cut and an additional five-day unpaid furlough, according to a person briefed on the negotiations. Together, the two measures amount to a roughly 10-percent wage cut.

Reporters at The Baltimore Sun are withholding bylines to protest recent cuts.

Rupert Murdoch says News Corp. will start charging for newspaper websites.

TV

TVNewser reports Dylan Ratigan is staying with NBC. Multiple sources say the former CNBC anchor, who disappeared from the air in March, is expected to turn up next on MSNBC. One insider says NBC “moved heaven and earth to keep him in the fold.”

HuffPost outlines “CNN’s Five Most Annonying ‘Personalities,’” which includes Lou Dobbs, Ali Velshi, Rick Sanchez, TJ Holmes and Soledad O’Brien.

ONLINE

The 50 most popular newspaper blogs- NYT has the most blogs to make the list with 22, LAT has 9.

NEWS NOTES

AP: The government could provide tax breaks for newspapers or allow them to operate as nonprofits to help the industry survive, Sen. John Kerry said. Without newspapers, Kerry and other lawmakers said, there will be too few journalists investigating governments, companies, and individuals.

WaPo‘s Dana Milbank‘s take here. Opening line: “They came as if to their own funeral.”
