This morning’s conversation is between NYT’s Mark Leibovich and Atlantic’s Molly Ball.

Ball: “Back in the office, and there is a No Labels robocall on my voice mail.”

Leibovich: “I label that annoying…labels can be useful that way.”

Someone swipes journo’s newspaper

“Someone took my newspaper off the lawn. That’s pretty much a felony around these parts. #thissuburbanlife.” — NYT‘s media writer David Carr. (Sign of the times? Yesterday we reported that NBC News reporter Kasie Hunt‘s Advise and Consent was snatched off her doorstep.)

From the Dept. of Bragiculture I: “Congratulations to the Morning Joe team. We were the #1 cable news morning show in Washington DC in the demo. Great job!” — MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough.

The Media Observers

Pro: “Bless @rolandsmartin for bringing the funk to that ridic skeet shooting segment on @OutFrontCNN tonight.” — BuzzFeed‘s Dorsey Shaw.

Con: “Roland Martin, David Frum, and Marsha Blackburn now debating Obama going skeet shooting on Erin Burnett #wtf” — BuzzFeed‘s Zeke Miller.

Important Q to Ponder: “What if most of the outside of our bodies looked like the stuff underneath the tongue? Would we ever have sex?” — WaPo‘s Gene Weingarten.
From the Dept. of Bragiculture II: “Schieffer is very much a man of talking points. He’s giving Kalb the same lines he gave me in our interview in October. For that matter, they’re all saying a lot of the same things they told me in October.” — Politico‘s Dylan Byers at an event with presidential debate moderators put on by Marvin Kalb and the George Washington Global Media Institute. He is, of course, referring to CBS “Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer, who isn’t characteristically a man of talking points. A question to ask ourselves: Why bother going to events when you can just read Dylan Byers?

Journo spellbound by Shakespeare play

“I’m here @FolgerLibrary for commanding production of Henry V; can’t take my eyes of lead actor; magnetic show so far.” — Bloomberg‘s Stephanie Green.

Politico Playbook publish time: 4:48 a.m.

Breitbart.com editor rips Slate‘s Weigel for being unfunny and a GOP press aide with an occasional temper goes to work for the NRSC. continued…

Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day

Journo has to pass a kidney stone

“All of my tweets for the next few days will come via @hootsuite so I will not be responding. I have to pass this Kidney Stone. #BoomOnMe” — Sophia Nelson, columnist for NBC The Grio, Essence and USA Today. In a subsequent tweet, she again warned, “All of my tweets 4 the next few days will come via @hootsuite on a timer. I will not be responding or engaging followers. #KidneyStoneCalls.” Nelson leaves no stone unturned. About an hour ago, she wrote, “Good Morning Tweeps. Welcome to my new followers. I am still convalescing with Kidney Stones. Not fun…xo” In the meantime, Sophia has been tweeting inspirational messages like, “If I want love, I must give love. If I want peace, I must sow peace…” She says her tweets this week will center around “getting rid of distractions in your life that block your blessings” — or, in her case, her urinary tract. Note to readers: We’ll keep you posted on when the stone passes.

Congratulations to…FT’s Mary Katherine Covert and House Speaker John Boehner‘s Press Secretary Michael Steel who got married in Meridian, Miss. over the weekend. Read their announcement in the NYT Style section here. A wedding attendee, CBS and ex-FBDCer Christine Delargy, sent in a picture of a publication she found there, calling it the “FishbowlDC of Mississippi.” We’re both flattered and frightened. See below:

Famed FishbowlDC reader Larry Kelly upon hearing the news that Washingtonian‘s advice column Harry & Louise is taking a breather: “Dear Harry & Louise, if I have friends who I rely on for advice and they desert me are they schumcks?” Our reply: We’re deeply sorry for your loss, Larry. And believe me, we’re feeling it too. This is a deeper question than it appears though. Since your name rhymes with Harry we suspect you’ll be feeling the painful reverberations of this for a little while. Take heart, Washingtonian is sure to come up with something genius to replace it.

How FNC’s Sean Hannity pronounces WaPo blogger and FBDC Fan Club Prez Ezra Klein: “Ezz-er Klein.” We’re sure he means no disrespect. (Thanks to The Daily Caller‘s TV writer Jeff Poor for letting us in on this fun fact.)

Prince Harry in Washington Today

“His royal fun-ness, Prince Harry, will be in DC today!” — ABC7′s Jummy Olabanji. Harry, a known party animal, is in town to receive an award on his work with war vets.

Convo Between Media Type and Aging TV Star

As many know, Dennis Haskins, who played Mr. Belding on “Saved by the Bell,” was the guest of the hour at Ron and Sara Bonjean‘s holiday party a few years ago. Ron is a public affairs specialist who runs The Bonjean Company.

Ron Bonjean: “Psyched to see @mrbelding on Mad Men tonight. Break through moment for the show.” A flattered ex-Mr. Belding retweeted and replied: “Thx Ron!”

Journo Love

“Steve Lopez at the LAT is a treasure.” — CBS Political Director and Slate’s John Dickerson, who linked to this story by Lopez.

Unexpected Encounters

“I just met Marvin Kalb in the elevator. Random and cool.” — Roll Call‘s Shira Toeplitz. Kalb spent 30 years at CBS and NBC News, where he was host of “MTP.” He’s an author and a fellow at GWU.

Diane Sawyer Talks Amanpour, Fox, and the Pope at Press Club

While her competitors Katie Couric and Brian Williams were chatting with late night hosts David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon respectively, ABC’s “World News” anchor Diane Sawyer sat down with veteran CBS journalist Marvin Kalb at the National Press Club to close the Kalb Report’s 17th season.

The program, “Diane Sawyer: A Life in News,” kicked off the International Women in Media Foundation’s week-long gathering.

What we learned:

Sawyer credits the the more conversational tone of “World News” not with any personal style of reporting, but rather with her lack of a strong speaking voice. “I always wish I had one of those,” she said.

Asked why she went to report from Japan (seems like a rather obvious question), Sawyer told Kalb it “was a story I had to experience tangibly.”

Sawyer doesn’t check the ratings for “World News.” She said: “I know you won’t believe this, but I don’t check them…I’d rather not. I simply don’t want to be held hostage.”

She has a lot of respect for Christiane Amanpour. Kalb asked her why she didn’t join Amanpour and other journalists in Egypt to report on location about the revolution. “I wanted to go there,” she said, “but I thought, ‘It’s Christianne Amanpour!’”

Of her early days at ABC co-anchoring with Sam Donaldson, Sawyer said: “We were actually a skit on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ we were so bad.” Kalb insisted she wasn’t that bad, to which Sawyer responded: “Then why did you call me and tell me to fix it?” (Kalb and Sawyer were colleagues at the beginning of her career.)

Find out what Kalb and Sawyer had to say about Fox News, Sawyer’s dream interview and the worst part of her day after the jump.

NYT‘s Bill Keller and Dean Baquet Talk Wikileaks, Murdoch, Pay Wall

Kalb Report host and veteran journalist Marvin Kalb grilled NYT executive editor Bill Keller and Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet at the National Press Club last night. Baquet spoke for just five minutes of a one-hour program.

Kalb declared himself a NYT fan who respected the publication as a leader in the news business. But you wouldn’t know it from the tone of the interview. Early on, he pressed Keller on the number of features in the Times, some of which appear on the front page. Kalb said he was “of the sort” who believes only hard news belongs on the front page. Keller defended features, saying they were important for telling stories, and had news value. Kalb wasn’t persuaded.

Asked about competition, Keller said that though WaPo and WSJ are still major competitors, online media have also been competitive, not just for traffic but for reporting and editing talent. He named Politico, HuffPost, and The Daily Beast, and says he reads them daily. Or, as he explained,”somebody looks at them and tells me.”

Kalb and Keller also clashed over commentary and analysis in news pieces. Kalb said there “should be a wall between the two.” Keller disagreed. “I don’t mind analysis in the news pages. In fact, I encourage it…It’s what readers want,” he said.

Kalb seemed pissed…

Murdoch Forecasts iPad may Save Newspaper Industry

By FBDC contributor Nick Massella

While Vice President Joe Biden may describe this media mogul as a BFD, Rupert Murdoch doesn’t let his power get to his head.

“I don’t let it get to me – I don’t really believe it,” said Murdoch, at The George Washington University’s Kalb Report Tuesday night at the National Press Club.

Murdoch spoke about his path to creating a media empire, what he considers content, and of his morning reading list.
Laughs erupted from the audience when Murdoch admitted that his morning news lineup consisted of The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post.

“But you own those two,” reminded Marvin Kalb, host of the program, which is produced by GW’s Global Media Institute, the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University, and the National Press Club.

Murdoch, who owns one of the coveted Apple iPads, describes it as “a wonderful thing” and that it “brought together all forms of media – music, books, newspapers.”

Unlike critics of the iPad and Amazon Kindle who think that these technologies will destroy the future of the newspaper, Murdoch believes that it may actually save the newspaper industry.

“If you have less newspapers and more of these, that’s ok,” said Murdoch of the iPad. “It’s more economic. It may well be the saving of the newspaper industry.”
