Marty’d: The Michelle Fields Edition

There are few things on the Internet that are as delightful as Marty Rudolf. The Twitter icon fishes for conversation with people from all walks of life, and every now and then, he gets a response. The more entertaining exchanges make it into our feature we like to call, “Marty’d.”

One recent example was when Marty asked Buzzfeed’s DC Bureau Chief, John Stanton, “Hello John, Describe what it’s like Being the DC Bureau Chief at Buzzfeed.com? I’m a Political News Junkie Online!” Stanton took the time to reply that it was “loads of fun,” even when he has to edit Evan McMorris-Santoro.

But it was a recent conversation with a Fishbowl Favorite that really caught our attention. continued…

Daily Caller Fires Another Reporter

Nicholas Ballasy, senior video reporter at The Daily Caller, was fired last week, multiple sources tell FishbowlDC.

Ballasy hasn’t had any stories published at The DC since Thursday. That was also the last day he tweeted and posted anything to Facebook.

When video reporter Michelle Fields was fired from The DC last year, messages sent to her work email address were returned with a notice that said she no longer worked there. That is not the case for Ballasy. He did not return our request for comment via Facebook message nor email.

Update: Ballasy wrote in after this story published: “I’m flattered that FishbowlDC and the person who gave you this news tip find me more fascinating than the stories I report. While I enjoyed my time at TheDC, we have parted company. As for my future endeavors, stay tuned. Like any good story, there is more to come.” Attached to Ballasy’s email was a YouTube video of a past hit he did on FNC.

The reason for Ballasy’s firing is unclear. A look at all of his bylined stories show he was continued…

How To Make It All About Me: The Michelle Fields Edition

CPAC has come and gone and all we have left are the memories. Interesting sights and sounds were everywhere. Just don’t tell Michelle Fields, who found numerous ways to make it all about her. Fields, who maintains her own blog and is a correspondent for Next Generation TV, covered CPAC in a very interesting way. She posted her “CPAC wrap-up” to her website saying that she wanted to “share some photos” from the conference.

While Fields delivered photos, they weren’t of CPAC. They were all of herself. We could understand maybe one or two of herself. Hell, she’s on TV! Of course she should be promoting herself. This one, above, is of her and co-host on Next Generation TV, Allen West. Of ALL the photos she shared, she’s the focus of every one.

More photos.. continued…

Fox Hires New Legs, PJTV Also Hires A Pair

Fox News has hired itself two more potential occupants of the “leg chair” on Redeye – Townhall‘s Katie Pavlich and Jedidiah Bila, who is a “columnist” for a conservative alternative to the AARP called AMAC (the Association of Mature American Citizens).

Pavlich (pictured at right), in addition to her editorial duties at Townhall, is now a “contributor” to Fox News itself and had her “coming out” party on Hannity last night debating fellow contributor Tamara Holder, known for being a punching bag token liberal on FNC and a rumored mistress of the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. Pavlich announced her new income stream on Twitter, saying, “I’ll be on with @seanhannity tonight at 9:20 est in my first appearance as an official @FoxNews contributor. Tune in ”

Bila (pictured above), the noted AMAC columnist (yeah, I’ve never heard of another either, but I thought I’d throw in “noted” to impress upon you just how irrelevant AMAC is) and FNC regular for what seems like years, also took to Twitter to announce she’s not only a FNC contributor, but also a Fox Business contributor because of her years in the business world. I’m just kidding, she was a teacher before somehow managing to become a person who has no experience in the things she’s being asked about on TV.

“Wrong – it was on screen – thnx” — Bret Baier to a follower who accused him of not citing ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel: “Bret Baier runs the mouse/hawk vid w no Jimmy Kimmel credit. That’s a special report.”

Dicking around

“National Weather Service reports that at 12:36 today in Washington D.C. no one was outraged. The moment quickly passed.” — CBS Political Director and Slate‘s John Dickerson. Beats us what he’s talking about, but it’s gotta be deep.

Journo on cold meds…

“Lance Armstrong” starts to sound weird when you hear it hundreds of times. Lance lance bo bance. Banana fana fo fance. Lance. #coldmeds” — Laurie White, blogger.

Congressman Allen West and I will be hosting a new online show launching in Feb!” — Ex-Daily Caller videographer (?) Michelle Fields. PJ Media is behind this, um, adventure. Who says you can’t go on to greatness after leaving Congress? West, whose title is Director of Next Generation Programming, and Fields will be joined by John Phillips (if you have no earthly idea who he is, he hosts “The John Phillips Show” on 790 KABC). Topics Next Generation will explore: education, economics, job searches, and safety and security. Read more here. See the unintentionally funny bios here that announce that each host joined NextGeneration.TV in January 2013.

The Media Critic

“The New York Times should probably just steer clear from commenting on #DC. Nothing personal, it just never goes well for them.” – Roll Call HOH writer Neda Semnani.

Dr. Weigel makes flu recommendations

“Pro tip: If it’s flu season and you’re coughing every 30 seconds, maybe don’t come to work that day.” — Slate‘s Dave Weigel.

Reporter takes off shirt and what?

“No doubt that one of the funniest sights is me trying to take off a compression shirt after a workout/run.” — FBDC and The Blaze‘s Eddie Scarry.

Self-appointed weatherman

“Man the fog in DC this winter is just intense.” — InTheseTimes Labor journo Mike Elk.

Boybander’s dirty mind goes right to strippers and cocaine

“Seems like the G fund should be used on strippers and cocaine, not lame financing of government operations.” – Slate economics reporter and third-tier Boybander Matt Yglesias.

A Quick Note on Junior

I wasn’t going to weigh in on the failures of self-promoter and fool Ron Meyer Jr. because he’s not really worth it. But I couldn’t help but notice how the press secretary to American Majority Action (AMA) linked to a Roll Call story about the failed coup attempt against Speaker John Boehner and claimed he’d been “vindicated.”

Perhaps his girlfriend, the one he says in his Twitter bio he’d followed by “literally,” (by 10 paces?) read it to him and skipped this part:

“The called-off plot suggests Boehner’s opponents were more organized than previously thought, however loosely. Notably, the attempt was plotted independently from, and without the knowledge of, a public effort led by a young conservative activist and former GOP Rep. Jeff Landry…” (emphasis added…with glee)

So Ron is trying to say something he had nothing to do with AND no knowledge of is proof that the bullshit he spread all over the Internet was true. It wasn’t. continued…

12 Things We Never Tire of in the Fishbowl

By Betsy Rothstein, Peter Ogburn and Eddie Scarry

We know you have one more year-end list in you. Or maybe you don’t. But wake up anyhow because here’s ours — the 12 things that never, ever make us want to take an afternoon snooze.

12. NBC Luke Russert‘s loud and fratboyish ways. Even House Speaker John Boehner has noted his decibel level and called him “loudmouth.” Though he’ll never get White House Soup of the Day quite right when he subs for Chuck Todd on “The Daily Rundown,” among our favorite moments with Luke this year was when he had a stop and smell the roses moment at a Nats game and took a picture of a spellbinding dragonfly, which he later posted on Twitter. Perhaps more poignantly though was when he covered a Capitol Hill presser and asked House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi if she was too old to remain in the Democratic leadership. The crowd of female lawmakers openly booed him. Pelosi told him he was offensive, even if he didn’t quite get it. Among the most entertaining comments sprang from CNN’s Hilary Rosen, who wrote on Twitter, “Note to Luke Russert: Mitch McConnell is 70, Harry Reid is 73. Oh and Bob Schieffer is 75. Think they should step aside? #NewGuysRule?” The question wasn’t an inappropriate one to raise, as lawmakers themselves had been discussing it out of earshot of Pelosi. Perhaps, as some noted, the time and setting and brash way in which Russert executed his questions were troublesome. Still, we especially enjoyed the commenters on Politico. There was the irate Wendy: “Luke Russert got his ass handed back to him. Any more questions, punk?” And the more sensible Chance: “Reporters should be asking tough, offensive and even stupid questions.”

11. Video journalist Michelle Fields flashing her breasts on national TV to get a job for Fox News. Her large male online contingency didn’t mind it much, either. In the meantime The Daily Caller gave her the axe for being lazy. Somehow Executive Editor David Martosko‘s lectures didn’t work? Favorite 2012 memory: There was the January manifesto from a convicted rapist that Michelle showed off on Facebook. But we’re torn between that and the more recent BuzzFeed party, where she unashamedly performed dramatic hair flips as our own Eddie Scarry snapped pictures.

10. Most things Matthew Boyle. The 20-something dogged journo never ceases to amaze. There was the time he insisted that the President of the Free World should allow him over for an interview. The more recent jaw-dropping moment from Boyle came when he fled The Daily Caller for Breitbart.com because he wants to be the next Andrew Breitbart. He started this adventure by taking his own photograph for the site, giving himself the unfortunate look of a triple-chinned Michelin Man. In his opening story out of the gate, he wrote an atrociously unedited right-wing rant about “magic vaginas.” We’re still not sure what those our, except we think they don’t involve Sandra Fluke. It was perfect. And terrible. And because we love Boyle in our own special way, we’d like to kidnap and deprogram him before it’s too late and the goose is boiled. Stick to breaking news Boyle and it’ll be just fine. And whatever you do, don’t stay there long.

9. Inside stories from The Washington Times. Always weird, unexpected, mind-boggling happenings at the ominous building off New York Avenue. Who can forget when former writer Julia Duin publicly accused then-editor Sam Dealey of verbally abusing her by canning her on the very day she decided to bring her daughter to work? She was also reportedly on crutches that day. And then there’s the more recent spate of stories concerning the impending layoffs coming in early 2013. The newsroom has dubbed their CEO Larry Beasley “Evil Santa” for a number of reasons, including recently moving a new sofa into his office while deciding whom to lay off. He also recently displayed a Santa doll holding a Christmas tree with the word “joy” on it. As the journalists await possible pink slips, they’re anything but joyful.

See the remaining eight entries of things that never bore us… continued…

Where in the World is Michelle Fields?

Since departing The Daily Caller, Michelle Fields has kept a low profile. You can still catch her on TV every now and then, but she has focused her efforts into her own website, www.MichelleFields.com. It’s a shame, because we miss the fan art that people would send her, like the one on the right. Fields attempts to carry on her great tradition of reporting and was eager to weigh in on the recent union battle in the state of Michigan. Fox News contributor Steven Crowder was punched in the face by a man at a protest. Michelle knows a thing or two about these kind of altercations. She rose to prominence after being knocked to the ground by a police officer during Occupy protests in NYC.

Crowder has come under a bit of scrutiny in recent days. Gawker brought up the idea that maybe Crowder deserved the beatdown he received. Fields calls the story “atrocious” and says that the author, Max Read, is a “terrible human being.” She takes Read to task because he accuses Crowder of “inserting himself in the situation.”

Maybe Fields should have read her own work before commenting on the story further, because she may not disagree with Read as much as she thinks. continued…

Fields Dons Sexy Angel Outfit for Halloween

Ex-Daily Caller scribe Michelle Fields celebrates Halloween in a way only she can. As always, she continues on her quest to work for Fox News by dressing like a xxx network correspondent. Come on, Fox, hasn’t she proven herself?

Fields on Facebook, “I usually spend every day doing my best to raise hell against my political foes, but tonight I’m an angel Happy Halloween!”

Details Includes Odd Pick in Next Wave of Pundits

Despite being fired, unemployed and absent from the FNC airwaves for the last two months, Michelle Fields is included in Details magazine’s “Next Wave of Political Pundits.” The list was published online yesterday.

There’s little reason to doubt that once Fields is once again gainfully employed that she’ll be back on FNC and it’s quite possible she has a bright future there. But Details has her listed as a “Guest Commentator” when she hasn’t been seen on the network since she was let go from The Daily Caller in August.

Fields appears to spend her time these days tweeting and updating her personal blog.

Others who made Details‘ list seemed to make more sense apart from a certain senator’s daughter… continued…

Boob Expert Shows up to Gutfeld Book Party

Walking into the Breitbart Embassy last night was sort of what one imagines walking into Michael Jackson‘s old home: Stationed in the living room was an ice cream stand with the Good Humor man. Outside was a petting zoo with ducks, bunnies, an alpaca and a tiny horse. And walking around the whole house was Nancy Leonard, an accordionist dressed in traditional Swiss clothing, who prides herself on being able to walk and play music at the same time.

“Do you know what the difference between an accordionist and an entertainer is?” Leonard asked FishbowlDC. “An entertainer can walk and play. Most accordionists have to sit and read the music.”

Leonard is a former breast implant specialist for the FDA. “I helped all kinds of people,” she said. “I helped men, women, transvestites… anybody.”

Also roaming around the zoo was former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.).

The Embassy was hosting a party for FNC The Five‘s Greg Gutfeld who has a book coming out next month. Gutfeld’s book, The Joy of Hate, is dedicated to the late Andrew Breitbart. It’s a commentary on the knee-jerk reaction people have to cry foul at anything and everything. Gutfeld said young and old people as well as “people that are not young or old” should read the book.

Party invitations inexplicably featured an old ’90s TV screenshot of Gutfeld from when he worked for Men’s Health. In the photograph, a buff Gutfeld is in a tank top and has a high-top haircut. “How dare you,” he said when we brought it up.

More Gutfeld and pictures…

Broadcast Legend ‘Appalled’ by Michelle Fields

During a recent interview with broadcasting icon Morley Safer, C-SPAN’s Brian Lamb played a clip of a lengthy interview he conducted with Michelle Fields (before she was dismissed by The Daily Caller) last year. In the clip, Michelle sings the praises of citizen journalism. She says that it gives voices to people who wouldn’t normally have a voice and that things like “Twitter and Facebook have enabled people who are not in the media to become one of the loudest voices in the media.” After hearing the clip, Safer seems genuinely gutted. The look on his face says it all. He said he is “appalled” and had to confirm with Lamb that she actually thinks that it’s a good idea. When Lamb assures him that yes, she does, Safer can only respond by saying, “I think it’s a dreadful idea.”

There may be some truth to what Fields is saying. Sure, there are those who have bucked the system and become successful by casting establishment journalism aside. But, in the process, they usually become establishment journalism. They reach beyond “Facebook and Twitter.”

Safer goes on to explain that “good journalism and good reporting must work within the constraints of great editing.” Can you even imagine if you had to edit what your friends say on Facebook? Safer drives the point home by saying, “I would trust citizen journalism as much as I’d trust citizen surgery.” What a total smackdown of the Michelle Mentality that people “who are not in the media” deserve to be taken as seriously as career journalists.

French Maid Spices Up Daily Caller Book Party

What was initially thought to be a special appearance by David Martosko‘s personal secretary at last night’s Daily Caller book launch party ended up being nothing of the sort.

To the left is a photo of Nandi, who works with Emperor Vodka, which sponsored the soiree. “I’m just here for pictures,” she said, graciously posing for cameras. Nandi, whose arms are reminiscent of Angela Bassett‘s What’s Love Got to Do with It, said this was her first time working with Emperor. Fun first day on the job!

The Daily Caller hosted the party in its Farragut Square newsroom celebrating The Lizard King, an ebook written by their own Jamie Weinstein and Will Rahn.

“I have no good answer,” said Rahn when asked who should read his book. “It’s a transformative book,” he said (“transformational” also works). He compared it to reading the Bible. “Is this off the record?” Rahn asked at the conclusion of our interview.

Weinstein was a little more willing to talk about the book, though we get the impression he thought he was on TV. “Truth-seekers will like it,” Weinstein said. He emphasized that the book is actually a manuscript provided by a White House insider and that he and Rahn are simply the vessels through which the book is being delivered. “Once in a while, history falls upon you and I think it happened to us,” he said, adding that it “may be one of the most important books since [Fox News host] Sean Hannity’s book.”

The Daily Caller‘s bar was stocked with wine, soda, alcohol and a beer tap that poured Pabst Blue Ribbon. Edibles (vegetables and a few hors d’oeurves) were a little on the slim side.

As guests trickled in, a couple faces stood out in the crowd: Politico‘s Byron Tau and Tim Mak. The DC and Politico have been known to publicly quibble in the past. One Daily Caller staffer said the relationship between the two publications “on paper” is often not the case between individual reporters. He said there are several Politico employees he regularly drinks with. Both Tau and Mak chatted with The DC‘s Alex Pappas for a while, as well.

In the crowd we also spotted a distinguished gentleman with a badass eye patch. It turned out to be Will Rahn’s father, ex-husband to WSJ‘s Peggy Noonan.

The DC‘s editor Tucker Carlson was seen talking with RollCall‘s Jonathan Strong, a former Daily Caller reporter. Strong said work for him has been slow and “a little boring,” given he covers Congress, which is currently out of session.

Notables: The Daily Caller‘s Alex Treadway, Sarah Hoffman, Taylor Bigler, Jeff Poor, Caroline May, Brian Danza, Chris Bedford, Neil Munro, Pat McMahon, Nicole Roeberg, and Vince Coglianese; The Free Beacon‘s Adam Kredo and CJ Ciaramella; RollCall HOH‘s Neda Semani and Warren Rojas; Fox News contributor Jim Pinkerton; WaPo‘s Alexandra Petri; U.S. News‘ Steven Nelson; The Daily Beast‘s Eli Lake; and Donald Rumsfeld‘s former chief of staff Keith Urbahn. Conspicuously absent were Matthew Boyle and Martosko, who had kid duty. We rode the elevator with him down to the garage. He puffed away on what may have been an illegal cigar the whole way down and said Rahn and Weinstein would know he was there “in spirit.”

Quotable:

“He’s a bit of a self promoter.”– Keith Urbahn on his former boss Donald Rumsfeld, who was Defense Secretary under former Prez George W. Bush. Urbahn spilled that Rummy is currently working on a new book. UPDATE: Urbahn writes in to tell us he was talking about his other former boss, The Daily Beast‘s David Frum.

Asked about former and recently fired Daily Caller reporter Michelle Fields, Daily Caller Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson said, “I haven’t seen her much on TV lately. That ended for some reason.” Fields was not in attendance.

“I don’t want to be written about.”– Steven Nelson, after FishbowlDC inquired about his job at U.S. News, which he only recently started.

“I’m holding out for the chance that Matthew Boyle shows up.”– FBDC’s Peter Ogburn.

Michelle Fields’ New Title: Robotic Retweeter

When reporters tweet links to news stories, they often include a specific line or write a snappy description of what they found interesting. Doing so alerts followers that the reporter actually read the story and gleaned something.

For example, Business Insider‘s Joseph Weisenthal recently tweeted a link to a column about trouble with the Federal Reserve. Weisenthal pulled the colorful (if nauseous) line “The Fed is in a hole—a Jackson Hole,” which appears halfway through the column and tweeted it with the link.

Likewise, New York magazine’s Jonathan Chait tweeted a link to a post by WaPo‘s Ezra Klein. “Agree with Klein that Paul Ryan is right: Obama cut Medicare to fund Obamacare,” Chait wrote.

BuzzFeed‘s Andrew Kaczynski tweeted a link to a “Call Me Maybe” cover by Sen. Orrin Hatch. “It’s as awkward as it sounds,” Kaczynski wrote. See how this works?

Michelle Fields, who recently parted ways with The Daily Caller, operates differently. As of late, she’s been copying and pasting headlines she presumably finds interesting and tweeting them with their respective links. Did she even read the stories? continued…
