Scarborough Questions NYT Reporting, Again

MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough fell into some hot water earlier this month when he made a sweeping (and inaccurate) generalization about the NYT‘s election coverage. His assertion, that the NYT had not reported on former Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry‘s wealth to the extent that the paper has on current Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was backed up by TIME‘s Mark Halperin. Halperin said he didn’t “recall” extensive reporting by the NYT on Kerry’s wealth.

This morning, Scarborough’s co-host Mika Brzezinski read an excerpt from a NYT Sunday editorial specifically criticizing Sheldon Adelson, a multi-billionaire who has said he may donate $100 million to defeat President Barack Obama‘s reelection bid.

“I think it’s unfortunate that you only get one side of the story on the editorial page. Where are all the [liberal billionaire and Democratic donor] George Soros editorials?” Scarborough said indignantly, apparently not having learned anything from the last time he went down this road. But Halperin, unwilling to be a fool for the second time, was more cautious. “There might have been some. I’m sure our friends at the Times will send them to us,” he said.

To be sure, we weren’t able to find any NYT editorials calling out the influence of Soros’ donations in elections. Kudos to Halperin for not blindly backing the host.

‘Morning Joe’ Crew Admires Politico Scribe’s Teeth

Politico‘s Patrick Gavin has been filling in for his colleague Mike Allen on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Playbook segment of late and today the crew couldn’t help but ogle at the ultraviolet rays Gavin calls his teeth.

“You know what they say about Patrick; he’s got the whitest teeth at Politico,” show host Joe Scarborough said at the end of the segment. Gavin then gave the toothiest grin while running his index finger across his pearls.

“Those are nice,” someone murmured in the background.

Then, Gavin explained, “It’s nice I know all my cigarettes and red wine aren’t staining my teeth.”

“Mmm, go get those bleached,” co-host Mika Brzezinski chimed in.

“I think he already has,” Scarborough responded.

And here they are:

MSNBC’s Willie Geist Pulls Back Curtain on Politico’s Mike Allen, Donny Deutsch, Mika and More

In an unusually candid interview for a TV personality, MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Willie Geist told GQ that a drinking game for the show includes drinking up “every time Politico Playbook writer Mike Allen has an awkward moment.”

Geist is an equal opportunity shit giver. He also gives GQ the underbelly of Mika Brzezinski‘s famous eye roll and completely ignoring any sports talk, Donny Deutsch wearing Baby Gap T-shirts and Joe Scarborough reminding viewers that he ran for Congress in 1994.

Good thing Geist is on vacation this week?

Quotes of the Day

The Daily Caller is celebrating Good Friday and Passover right now by boarding a bus to the WV casino.” — Quote by the DC’s Alex Pappas; picture taken by Jeff Poor. Absent from the trip: Michelle Fields.

A glimpse of the future

“Entered Apple store. Scanned my purchases with my phone. Paid with my Apple account and walked out. Soon we’ll never have to talk to people!” — Politico‘s Ginger Gibson.

Question to ponder: “Who is this d-bag on Reliable Sources saying ‘Morning Joe’ leans right?” — The Daily Caller‘s TV writer Jeff Poor. He was referring to Democratic campaign consultant John Aravosis. They were discussing Mika Brzezinski moderating a women’s forum at the White House and if that crossed any journalistic boundaries. Aravosis remarked on CNN, “I don’t necessarily like it. I think what — I agree with you to some degree, OK?  Mika Brzezinski on a show which leans right, obviously, so maybe the White House thought, hey, we’re getting somebody from a right-wing show, so there’s the balance right there.  I do think that it depends how she carried herself. If she was a real journalist and asked them tough questions, then I think it is good.”

Quote taken out of Context

“When I had my back turn Elijah drank his cup of wine.” — WTOP’s Neal Augenstein.

Holiday humor?

“I’d like to wish my Jewish friends a Happy Passover, fellow Christians a Happy Easter, and you atheists the best of luck.” — Breitbart.com’s John Nolte.

“I am trying out both a sunrise service and my earliest-ever tweet. How are all these people so chirrupy this early?” — TWT‘s Anneke Green.

Did you hear the good news?

“He is risen!” — An Easter enthused MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough.

Weingarten: Always the charmer

“This guy tweets that I am insulting Repubs by comparing them to dogs. Frankly, I thought I was insulting dogs.” — WaPo‘s Gene Weingarten.

Oops! “Taking a lap here at the Newseum — these are images of fallen journolists” — ABC News’s Jake Tapper. No readers, these aren’t the members of Ezzy’s infamous Journolist.

Colleague denounces Derbyshire’s work

“For the record, I find my colleague John Derbyshire‘s piece fundamentally indefensible and offensive. I wish he hadn’t written it.” — National Review Online‘s Jonah Goldberg on his colleague getting dropped over the weekend for writing a racial rant that speaks of parents who urge children to avoid African Americans. His piece appeared in an Internet publication called Taki’s Magazine.

Journo down on tasteless tourist

“Dear tourist lady: There are appropriate places to cut your children’s nails. I really don’t think the metro is one of them.” — Greenwire‘s Jessica Estepa.

Birthday screw-up on “Morning Joe”: When asked what he learned today, NBC’s Luke Russert and the gang went on about how weird it is that today is Chuck Todd and Joe Scarborough‘s birthday today. But actually it’s just Joe’s birthday. Todd’s was yesterday, which he corrected them at the start of his show, “The Daily Rundown.” Happy Birthday to all.

The Audacity of Morning TV: ‘Morning Joe’s’ Mika Brzezinski Forgets Dad’s B-day, Twice!

The first thing Politico‘s Mike Allen did when he appeared for a segment on “Morning Joe” early this morning was remind the show’s co-host Mika Brzezinski that it was her father’s birthday. Brzezinski had clearly forgotten even though, as she said (and was included in Allen’s “Playbook” today), former Sec. of State Madeleine Albright had recently reminded her about it.

The real loser here is Brzezinski’s father, Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski, who was forgotten on this special day. But the other loser here is Allen. While he was invited on the show to plug his upcoming eBook, almost the entire segment was eaten up by Mika, Joe Scarborough and the rest of the panel yucking it up over Mika’s forgetfulness and how weird her family is. She said none of her family members remember birthdays and that her mother is very critical. Ouch, ouch and more ouch.

Allen sat there quietly, barely muttering a single word while the debauchery went on, until the last 10 seconds when he was invited to talk about his book. Even then, the panel snickered and interrupted as Allen enthusiastically tried to explain how awesome he thinks his book will be and why everyone else will probably think so, too.

Poor Allen. For what it’s worth, FBDC was hanging onto your every word.

Politico Turns 5. Let the Roasting Begin.

Five years isn’t really that long, but Politico has seen rapid growth and a lot of success since it first began in 2007. So on a highly self-congratulatory note on Monday, Politico released a video with clips of several high-profile political players roasting the publication on its half-decade mark.

“Five years, it’s a long time. You’re doing generally a great job,” says Donald Trump.

Politico is “truly a news organization that acts its age: a petulant five-year-old concerned with only trivial matters,” host of “MTP” David Gregory says with a smile.

With a few repeats and some intensive listening, Arianna Huffington can be understood as saying, “Just as I was sitting down to write this, I saw that Mike Allen had already broken what I was going to say.”

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” host Willie Geist remarks, “I’ve gotta recuse myself because I don’t care for Politico, inside the Beltway gossipy garbage. And CBS “Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer cracks, “The next thing you know, you’ll be getting your driver’s license.”

Politico‘s Mike Allen‘s note to Politico readers as well as Politico staff is so sweet we think we’ve already contracted Diabetes… “THANK YOU to all of you who believed in us from Day 0. And we’re so grateful to our gifted, inspiring colleagues who make POLITICO so essential, enjoyable and illuminating.”

Other notables in the video include former CBS news anchor Katie Couric, “Morning Joe’s” Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, FNC’s Greta Van Susteren and host of “Hardball” Chris Matthews, who says he enjoys reading the print version because it’s printed on such “thick stock.”

What Will Journos Miss Most About Huntsman?

Other than Tim Pawlenty, Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman was the only one who never got the fleeting surge in poll numbers all of the other contenders received. He wasn’t a particularly exciting candidate even though he did some exciting things. He was a Motocross rider. He liked to play rock music. And he was the other Mormon in the race, which was kind of cool. And then, of course, there were those press darling daughters.

Huntsman suspended his campaign on Monday and immediately endorsed Mitt Romney for the nomination. Though he’s out of the race, his campaign left a (mostly) lasting impression among the Washington press corps. Some opened up to FBDC and shared their favorite memories of his failed candidacy.

ReutersSam Youngman– “The way he smelled like teen spirit.”

The Daily Caller‘s Jeff Poor– “The easy answer is ‘his daughters.’  But I think I’m going to miss waking up to Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski every morning telling their viewers how wonderful he is and how dumb Republican voters are for not embracing him.”

Guns & PatriotsNeil McCabe– “Making snarky replies to his daughters’ insipid Tweets.” McCabe is referring, of course, to Huntsman’s daughters’ joint Twitter account from which they made a sport out of tweeting about the campaign.

Host of SiriusXM’s P.O.T.U.S Julie Mason– “Jon Huntsman was campaigning? Totally missed it”

Politico
‘s Patrick Gavin– “The opportunity to have the first Eagle Scout in the Oval Office since Gerald Ford. Policymakers should also have to earn merit badges.”

WaPo‘s Aaron Blake– “He taught me so much about [the late musician] Captain Beefheart and riding motorcycles through the desert. I can never truly repay him.” (Beefheart pictured at right.)

Human EventsTony Lee– “What I will miss: His decency and authenticity. What I won’t miss: His attempts to be hip and snarky. And H-Jams.” For anyone who doesn’t know “H-Jams” were daily songs Huntsman’s press secretary would send out to reporters in email briefings.

RIP Huntsman campaign. I’d say we barely knew you but I think we did.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) announced yesterday that Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski will headline their November 1st ICFJ Awards Dinner.  The duo from MSNBC’s “ Morning Joe” will serve as masters of ceremony for the event honoring ICFJ’s Founders Award winner Christiane Amanpour, host of ABC’s “This Week.”

The annual fete brings together more than 500 members of the media and supporters to honor outstanding colleagues whose stories have helped improve societies around the world.  The event will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington DC.  For more info on the dinner, visit the ICFJ site here.

Washington Toasts Chris Licht

Licht, Brzezinski, Mike Allen, Mark Leibovich, Louis Burgdorf

If the idea of Mark Leibovich‘s impending book release strikes fear in your heart, we’ve got some bad news for you.  You’re sleepless nights won’t end anytime soon.  “I’ve finished about five pages,” the star scribe told FishbowlDC last night at a book party for “Morning Joe” EP- turned-CBS News VP, Chris Licht.

Hosted by Tammy Haddad, Constance Milstein, Jon Meacham and Kevin Sheekey, the event packed the parlor of the Jefferson Hotel with a guest list that included MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, CBS’s Chris Isham, HuffPo’s Howard Fineman, Bob Woodruff, Hilary Rosen, Politico’s Jim VandeHei, Patrick Gavin and Mike Allen, WaPo’s Jonathan Capehart, Sally Quinn, MSNBC’s Louis Burgdorf, Kelley McCormick, MTP’s Betsy Fischer, Janet Donovan, Wash Life’s Kevin Chaffee and John Arundel, Examiner’s Nikki Schwab and Anne Schroeder Mullins.

FishbowlDC also caught up with a delightful David Shuster who shared a few secrets about his investigative website project after we swore to keep the info offline for now.  But the most interesting insight of the night was gleaned from what wasn’t said:  When asked if “Morning Joe” might follow him to CBS, Licht swerved and ultimately dodged the question, leaving guests to wonder if the show’s rumored move is more than simple speculation.

For info on Licht’s book, “What I Learned When I Almost Died,” click here and check out video from his bash here.
