Eater DC Undergoes Redesign

Screen Shot 2014-09-23 at 07.32.18For those who clicked over to Eater DC on Monday or today, you likely noticed some changes to its homepage. Adweek yesterday reported that site underwent a relaunch eight months after joining Vox Media.

According to Adweek:

“The new look is the culmination of editorial improvements and hires—including Bloomberg’s Ryan Sutton, Village Voice’s Robert Sietsema, Saveur’s Helen Rosner and editors in 27 cities—that the foodie brand has made since it became part of Vox Media eight months ago. “We have been building up our army in preparation for this relaunch,” said Amanda Kludt, Eater’s editor in chief.”

The redesigned site contains all the same savory and delicious information it did before yesterday – most of which is populated by Eater DC editor Missy Frederick – just reimagined using Vox Media’s Chorus platform.

For more on the site’s redesign, click on over to Adweek or check it out today when you go to decide your dinner plans.

WBJ’s First Ritzy Soiree

Washington Business Journal held its first black tie event last night at the Four Seasons for the Outstanding Directors Awards honoring board members of local companies. “I’d say the editors and reporters clean up well.” said Missy Frederick, a WBJ reporter.

Journos Under the Grand Chapiteau

cirque de soleil - press night.jpg

Droves of journalists swarmed National Harbor last night for the media preview of Cirque du Soleil’s traveling spectacle, “Ovo.” Reporters from nearly every Washington news outlet were in attendance to indulge in complimentary pop, popcorn and one of the finest Cirque performances this blogger has ever seen.

Under the grand chapiteau FishbowlDC spotted WaPo’s Vicky Hallet, Michael O’Sullivan and Nelson Pressley, WTOP’s Richard Day, Washington Life’s John Arundel and Michael Clements, Fox 5′s Steve Chenevey (who was also spotted at Lady Gaga on Tuesday), WBJ’s Missy Frederick, Washingtonian’s Sophie Gilbert, CBS Radio’s Guy Lambert, Hot 99.5′s Samy K (also at Gaga on Tues), HuffPo’s Stephanie Green, CNN’s Padma Rama, Pamela’s Punch’s Pamela Sorensen, TBD’s Maura Judkis and the Examiner’s Nikki Schwab.

And these days you can’t shake a stick without hitting a few reality stars. Last night our stick hit Blonde Charity Mafia’s Katherine Kennedy, as well as Real Housewives of DC stars Lynda Erkiletian, Paul Wharton and Ebong Eka (all sans camera).

Cirque’s Ovo runs at National Harbor until October 24, 2010. It truly is a wonderful show and in my humble opinion, a much more robust experience than seeing a performance in Vegas. It’s worth every penny and the pilgrimage to PG County.

Washington Journos “Warm Up” at the W Hotel

w kiki bar.jpg

Last night, Washington media foodies joined Jayne Sandman and Barbara Martin on the rooftop of the new W Hotel to sample the W’s new “Winter Warm Up” cocktail menu that includes warm and wonderful treats like hot peanut buttered rum, mulled pear cider, and hot “not” chocolate – a killer combo of spiced rum, vanilla and milk topped with chocolate marshmallows.

The crowd ranged from cocktail connoisseurs like Metrocurean’s Amanda McClements, Nycci Nellis and WaPo‘s David Hagedorn to bourgeois binge-drinkers like me.

Caught warming up with some of the W’s new cocktail creations were WBJ‘s Missy Frederick, The Hill‘s Kate Oczypok, Cap File‘s Sarah Schaffer, DC Mag’s George Stone, Michael Ponticelli and Aram Taghavi of Bisnow, Politico‘s Kiki Ryan and Amie Parnes, Rebecca Cooper of Dcist.com and Alex Nicholson for BrightestYoungThings.com.

As an added bonus, our own Chris Ariens from TVNewser was in town from New York.

W Moves Back Into White House (Neighborhood)

Under the basking glow of moonlight – and careful watch of night vision goggles – Washington’s media star-studded cast assembled to christen a new “see and be seen” restaurant overlooking 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue last night.

Ashley Parker, Scott McCrary, Christy Findlay, Ana Marie Cox, Doug Heye, Missy Frederick, Ali McSherry, Anna Palmer, Christina Wilkie, Jane Black, Amanda McClements, Melissa McCart, Rachel Cothran, Michele Kayal, Barbara Delollis, Corinna Lothar, Kevin Chaffee, Amy Cavanaugh, Karen Sommer Shallett and many more came out to welcome Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and his new restaurant – J&G Steakhouse – at W Washington, DC. Barbara Martin and Carrie Foster of The Patton Group hosted the event.

After a fabulous spread and book-signing, the retinue gathered on the rooftop for desserts and to be watched from The White House “not through a set of binoculars.”
