‘Kissing the Ring’ – Face The Nation’s 60th Anniversary Celebration

105748_0258Bigwig politicians, reporters and DC socialites, all showed up Monday night to the Newsuem in downtown Washington to honor Bob Schieffer and 60 years of exceptional journalism by Face The Nation. In something rarely seen in Washington, the evening began with a moment of agreement and lightheartedness between partisans.

“I’ve had 101 appearances on ‘Face the Nation,’ which exactly matches my age,” joked Senator John McCain, ”The first time I was on, … Bob … and I had an in-depth discussion about the aviation policies of Calvin Coolidge. … I have been on a number of shows. Always I’m reluctant to do so, I’m sure you know. [Laughter.] … I want to thank Mary Hager, who has been with Bob as his producer for all this time. … For a very short statement, I think next is the Vice President. That will be interesting. [Laughter.]”

The Top 10 Things Overheard at The Hill’s ’50 Most Beautiful’ Celebration

20140729_193245Last night at Poste, The Hill celebrated its annual “50 Most Beautiful“ list, a nod to this town’s most beautiful – or not – members of Congress, Congressional staffers, campaign aides, lobbyists, and other Capitol Hill/executive branch employees.

Many of the 50 selected were in attendance, although the five Representatives and two Senators who made the list were not. Either was White House press secretary Josh Earnest. Or FOX News’ Bret Baier or CNN’s S.E. Cupp. But CBS News’ Nancy Cordes and NBC News’ Kristen Welker were there.

Guests who entered through Poste’s entrance (and not Hotel Monaco) first stumbled upon a step and repeat for anyone but mostly those who made the list. The gathering took place on Poste’s outdoor patio amid perfect weather and included remarks from the recently announced new Hill editor in chief Bob Cusack. Guests noshed on shrimp cocktail, gourmet sandwiches, and passed hors d’oeuvre and enjoyed an open bar that seemed to reopen several times.

Conversation was comical. Especially if you stood near strangers and wrote down the laughable things you could hear them say. And with that brings us “The Top 10 Things Overheard at The Hill’s ’50 Most Beautiful Celebration.” Read more

The Hill Names the ’50 Most Beautiful’

50mbweb1It’s that day. That one day a year The Hill publishes its “50 Most Beautiful” list, and you can’t help but laugh, just a bit.

The 11th annual list recognizes the Beltway’s “best-looking,” relevant to the audience. So not necessarily all of the actually hot people you see around town, but the “most beautiful” members of Congress, Congressional staffers, campaign aides, lobbyists, other Capitol Hill personnel and executive branch employees.

Washington beautiful is tricky. It’s a far cry from “beautiful” as portrayed on DC-based television programs like “House of Cards” and “Scandal.” That said, this year’s list does include many who would catch your eye in Washington and elsewhere, along with several who might not even do so here in DC. CBS News Toasts to 50 Years with Bill Plante

BillPlante

As if there wasn’t enough going on in DC last night (the Congressional Women’s Softball Game, 826DC’s ‘How to Make it in This Town’ convo with CNN’s Jake Tapper and NYTimesMark Leibovich, and the Big Money book party for POLITICO’s Ken Vogel) CBS News hosted a party to celebrate White House Correspondent Bill Plante’s 50 year career at the network.

Friends and colleagues gathered at Jose Andres’ Oyamel to fete Plante, a known foodie and wine connoisseur. Highlight (for him): He was gifted with a rare 1964 Chateau Pichon Baron-Pauillac.

Guests included CBS News President David Rhodes, Chairman Jeff Fager and Washington Bureau Chief Chris Isham. as well as Nancy Cordes, Major Garrett, Bob Orr, Chip Reid, and Julianna Goldman.
