“I fully expect to be Speaker in five weeks,” she said. “I have big confidence in my candidates. They’re excellent; they’re battle-tested. They know what they believe, and they’re doing just fine in their districts.”

Pelosi said the biggest lesson she’s learned since taking office is that women have to seize their own power.

“Women were not going to wait another 200 years to take power in Congress,” she said. “When I first ran for leadership, the men [in Washington] said, ‘Who said she could run?’ Their attitude towards reaching women was ‘let’s find out the things women want, and then we’ll do [those things].’”

Pelosi explained that she initially entered politics because she “saw it as an extension of being a mother.” She also championed President Obama‘s health care reform strategy, saying that women and families would be the primary beneficiaries. “No longer will being a woman be a pre-existing condition,” she said.

But not to worry, they are conservationists at heart.

“We only bought one copy of the book, scanned and copied the book jacket then applied it to 99 cent hard covers so we could keep costs down and not support the publishing of it,” remarked Jared Neumark of Landline TV.

Neumark claims the company isn’t overly Democrat or Republican. “Our feelings about Palin are probably pretty typical for mid-20 year olds who went to liberal arts schools,” he said in an e-mail. “But we make fun of both sides of the spectrum.”

Apologies for this delayed report.

Pooler stood patiently for two hours and saw State Dinner arrivals in booksellers area, and there was too much fabulousness to describe in detail here. So here are the greatest moments and a few broad details.

Lots of saris tonight (and probably one too many pantsuits according to some witnesses who will not be named here), and lots of people who didn’t quite get the “stand here and pose” thing down.

Best Sari goes to Semonti Stephens who wore one of the dresses from her Spring wedding. A red number with gold jewelry from Calcutta.

Best Wardrobe malfunction goes to Bob Casey whose cumberband slithered from his waist to the floor.

Best Look goes to Speaker Nancy Pelosi who when Robin Givhan asked her “Is your gown Armani?”…Pelosi shot her a disapproving stare and rolled her eyes a bit–i.e. Pelosi to Givhan: Drop Dead. (No answer to Givhan’s follow up question which was “What was that look?!”)

Biggest Celebs: Steven Spielberg, Alfre Woodard and Blair Underwood (together but not an item). Also, fyi, some stars are shorter, more wrinkled, not as hot in person. Underwood. Hotter.

Honorable mention for biggest star: Gayle King, sans bff Oprah Winfrey.

Best Dressed Billionaire: Mayor Michael Bloomberg sporting red bow tie.

Best attempt at self-deprecation goes to NBC’s Brian Williams who strolled in before movie mogul David Geffen, said “hello press,” and then: “I grew up a busboy in New Jersey so I have to resist the urge to clean up.”

Best random uttering about a guest: Oh my god, a real housewife!(See Real Housewives of DC for more info)….

Best shout out to colleague: Helene Cooper “Tom Friedman you better stop!”

President Barack Obama and VP Joe Biden may be excluded from GQ‘s “50 Most Powerful in DC,” but looks like most of the list’s top half are one degree of separation from the West Wing.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag, Senior Advisor David Axelrod, Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner and National Economic Council Director Larry Summers (tie), Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former VP Dick Cheney and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts round out the top ten. The list may be a changing-of-the-guard from the Bush administration, but it’s a DC no-brainer.

Your DC media types are represented by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos at #31, Politico‘s John Harris #43 and The New Yorker‘s Jane Mayer and NYT‘s Scott Shane tied at #27.

Politico points out White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, though #20 on the last list, did not make the cut this time around.

The mag will celebrate the list with a party tonight at 701. And though obviously overlooked for “50 Most Powerful,” FBDC will be there. Check back tomorrow for dets.
