After a brief national scare this week, it turns out the U.S. won’t be affected by a global shortage of bacon. That’s good news for the Daily Grill at 18th and M st. in Dupont.

After a three-week hiatus, The restaurant’s bar reopened last night and members of the media were invited to see its new look and try the new happy hour specials. Two of the new menu items, the Capitol Dog and the Crab Cake BLT, are heavy on the bacon.

Along with new food and beers on the menu, the bar was gutted and revamped with new seats, TVs and light fixtures. Here’s how the night went:

We met Carl…

Sitting with the rest of the media who attended was Carl Pierre. He writes for InTheCapital.com, a startup about startups and the social scene in D.C. “You forget how much you actually use your phone until you don’t have one,” Pierre said unprompted as he watched another guest type on her phone. It turns out Pierre was without a phone last night because he had recently been robbed at H Street Country Club in NE, D.C. He had placed his wallet/phone holder on a table. Inside was $200 cash, his credit cards and his iPhone 4S. He turned away for a flash and it was gone. Pierre used a GPS app on his friend’s phone to locate his. He saw it moving and he followed it a few blocks before approaching “a bad neighborhood.” He gave up on the chase and has resigned to purchasing the iPhone 5.

A Convo Between Two Journos

Today’s conversation is between Salon Editor-at-Large Joan Walsh, who often appears on MSNBC’s “Hardball” and Washington Watch’s Roland Martin.

For WaPo‘s Travel cover piece on Sunday, Nancy Trejos did something she once found harrowing: She attended Dance Camp in Las Vegas and ultimately performed the cha-cha in front of an audience of 375.

It’s not “Dancing With the Stars,” but it gave her a small taste of what stars must go through. The experience wasn’t pretty for Trejos. Her feet swelled. Her timing was off. She knocked into fellow dancers. She got scolded. She felt stupid as she “glued” a smile to her face. And by the time she got to tango class she had a full-blown migraine. “I glided backward down the ballroom, pulling my partner too hard,” she wrote in her first-person story. “So hard that we almost fell.”

As the week wore on, she conquered fears and made close friends. “I’m so glad I performed the cha-cha in front of so many people because I conquered a fear, and I didn’t give up as much as I was tempted to,” Trejos wrote FishbowlDC from China, where she’s vacationing and trying hard not to work. “And in the process, I actually learned a new dance and became a better dancer.”

As for “Dancing With the Stars,” she doesn’t think she’s 2010 winner Jennifer Grey just yet. “I didn’t spend quite as much time training as those ‘Dancing with the Stars’ contestants do, but I was exposed to the same pressure and tension they must feel before they perform,” she wrote in an email. “Still, I only had to do it in front of 375 people. I can’t imagine how I would have handled knowing that millions of people would be watching on TV! I give them credit for that.”

Selling out two straight performances, Washington Life‘s Michael Clements, Suspicious Package’s Christina Sevilla, Napoleon restauranteur Omar Popal, World Bank’s Bruce MacPhail, NIH’s Oli Robinson and  filmmaker Karim Chrobog, staged “An Evening with Anton Chekhov” at the Washington Club in Dupont Circle.  Spotted in the audience: The Atlantic‘s Garance Franke-Ruta, CNN’s Elise Labott, NYT‘s Eric Lipton, Boston Globe‘s Farah Stockman, WaPo‘s Nancy Trejos,  Nurith Aizenmann and  Annie Gowen, Tim Burger, Ashcroft Group’s Juleanna Glover, Christopher Reiter of Muleh, K Street Kate Michael.  Proceeds benefitted the Helen Hayes Award theater programs for DC kids.

DC media types kick started their Halloween weekend by attending three sold out performances of “An Evening With Edgar Allan Poe”  in the garden and ballroom of Dumbarton House.  Following on this summer’s sold out performances of Moliere’s “The Hypochondriac”, the DC-based Picnic Theatre Company staged a Halloween party production of Poe stories — Cask of Amontillado, Fall of the House of Usher, and the Telltale Heart, with DJ intermission, wine and crepes.  Ensemble cast:  Washington Life‘s Michael Clements, Christina Sevilla of Suspicious Package,  Napoleon restaurant’s Omar Popal, Picnic Theatre co-founders Bruce MacPhail and Oli Robinson.  Attendees included Tim Burger, Kiki Ryan, Christine Delargy, Wash Life‘s Kevin Chaffee, TIME‘s Jay Newton-Small, WaPo‘s Nancy Trejos, WaPo‘s Annie Gowen, NYT‘s Eric Lipton and Elham Dehbozorgi, NBC Washington’s Kate Michael.  Proceeds benefited Dumbarton House historical preservation and Clowns Without Borders.
