Y&N’s Katy Adams Toasted at Teatro

Vino flowed for Katy Adams at Teatro Goldoni on Friday evening. The newest writer to take the reins of the Examiner‘s “Yeas and Nays” column was celebrated by nearly two dozen media types with a lovely three-course dinner hosted by Janet Donovan. In attendance were WBJ‘s Jennifer Nycz-Conner, Hisaoka Communications’ Wendy Gordon, Nick Massella, Brendan Kownacki, Human Events editor Emily Miller, Roz Plater and Maureen Ume of Fox 5, Roll Call‘s Beth Brotherton and Ali McSherry, Examiner’s Jacque Bland, Mary Bird, Amy McLean of CTIA and of course, Katy’s partner in crime – Nikki Schwab.

The hot topics: Glenn Beck’s weekend rally (Schwab and Miller hashed it out), Donovan’s consumer electronics woes (TiVo, DVD TV setup), and Nikki Schwab’s new “do,” as in hairdo – Schwab treated herself to a little makeover at the Red Door Salon that day.

Suspicious Package rocked out for fans, sports junkies, and politicos Tuesday night at the Bullpen outside Nationals Park before the 49th annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game. Despite the heat, the band remained cool, rocking out to “I Wanna Be Sedated,” “Dancing with Myself,” and other popular songs.

The band of friends, which includes writer Tim Burger; USTR’s Christina Sevilla; The Washington Post’s Tom Toles; HUD’s Bryan Greene; and Josh Meyer, Director of Education and Outreach for the Medill National Security Journalism Initiative, has been around since May 2008 and played at gigs such as Journapalooza 2009 at the National Press Club, Rock and Roll Hotel, Hard Rock Café, and the embassies of Finland, Italy, Denmark, and Germany. The band most recently played on Saturday at Meyer’s wedding to The Washington Post’s Michael Chandler.

Spotted at the event were RNC Chairman Michael Steele, House GOP leader John Boehner, Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), Janet Donovan, and Politico’s Kiki Ryan.

Awards Honor Human Rights and Social Justice Reporting

Contributed by Nick Massella

On Wednesday May 26, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights and George Washington University’s Global Media Institute announced the winners of the 42nd annual Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards and the 2010 Book Awards. The winning entries included diverse subjects such as human trafficking, infant mortality, Navy abuses against gay sailors, and Iranian state repression. The awards were presented by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and Mary Courtney Kennedy Hill. Ethel Skakel Kennedy, wife of the late Senator and former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, attended the event.

ABC News journalist Diane Sawyer was among the RFK Journalism Award recipients but was unable to attend. Her award, in the domestic television category for “A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains,” was accepted by her colleague Claire J. Weinraub.

Two Washington Post photographers also received RFK Journalism Awards, including Carol Guzy, who won in domestic photography for “No Greater Love.” The RFK Center describes her 2010 entry as “a strong emotional narrative that speaks to the process of dying, as well as Alzheimer’s disease, aging and home health care.” She was also the Grand Prize winner in 2009.

The Washington Post’s Sarah Voisin was recognized for “In Mexico’s war on drugs, battle lines are drawn in chalk” in the international photography category. Her photographic reporting profiles the drug war in Mexico. She said that her inspiration for the assignment came from “the Mexican-based journalists that have to live there and report this story. They face life or death decisions on whether to report the truth about the drug cartels.”

The RFK Journalism Awards honor outstanding reporting on the issues that define the life and work of Robert F. Kennedy: human rights, social justice, and the power of individual action in the United States and around the world.

The RFK Center also presented the 2010 Book Award, which is awarded to an author who faithfully and forcefully reflects Robert Kennedy’s concern for the poor and powerless, his struggle for honest and even-handed justice, his conviction that a decent society must assure all young people a fair chance, and his faith that a free democracy can act to remedy disparities of power and opportunity.

This year’s Book Award went to Amy Bach for Ordinary Injustice: How America Holds Court, an investigation of inequalities in America’s criminal justice system. In addition, Dave Eggers was awarded a Distinguished Honor for his book, Zeitoun.

The remaining Journalism Award winners after the jump.

Murdoch Forecasts iPad may Save Newspaper Industry

By FBDC contributor Nick Massella

While Vice President Joe Biden may describe this media mogul as a BFD, Rupert Murdoch doesn’t let his power get to his head.

“I don’t let it get to me – I don’t really believe it,” said Murdoch, at The George Washington University’s Kalb Report Tuesday night at the National Press Club.

Murdoch spoke about his path to creating a media empire, what he considers content, and of his morning reading list.
Laughs erupted from the audience when Murdoch admitted that his morning news lineup consisted of The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post.

“But you own those two,” reminded Marvin Kalb, host of the program, which is produced by GW’s Global Media Institute, the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University, and the National Press Club.

Murdoch, who owns one of the coveted Apple iPads, describes it as “a wonderful thing” and that it “brought together all forms of media – music, books, newspapers.”

Unlike critics of the iPad and Amazon Kindle who think that these technologies will destroy the future of the newspaper, Murdoch believes that it may actually save the newspaper industry.

“If you have less newspapers and more of these, that’s ok,” said Murdoch of the iPad. “It’s more economic. It may well be the saving of the newspaper industry.”

We’ve got a new leader in the Male, On Air category (and could Chuck Todd pull off a comeback?!?),

The current leaders in each category are…
