“Given the loss of local journalism in various regions of the nation I’d say it’s pretty big,” said an event organizer who was not comfortable judging the weight of the announcement on a scale from 1 to 10. “The potential for it is even bigger.”

The announcement will take place at The Newseum Knight Studio (555 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC) on Thursday, March 25th beginning at 10:00 a.m. (press call 9:30 a.m.).

CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison will make the announcement and be joined by the President and CEO of PBS Paula Kerger and the President and CEO of NPR Vivian Schiller. They will discuss “new initiatives to enhance journalism across public media, utilizing radio, television and digital platforms.”

Post announcement will be a panel discussion on public media in local, national and international reporting. The panel will be moderated by Hari Sreenivasan (Correspondent, PBS NewsHour) and include Tom Rosenstiel (Founder and Director, PEW’s Project for Excellence in Journalism), Nishat Kurwa (News Director, Youth Media International), Tom Karlo (General Manager, KPBS TV-FM), and Kinsey Wilson (Senior Vice President and General Manager, Digital Media, NPR).

The Hollywood Reporter took note of Kerger’s comments at a recent press tour- they report: Asked if she’s noticed any difference between the administrations of Obama and George W. Bush, Kerger said, “The best way to answer that question is, coming out of the administration, we received full funding for public broadcasting for the first time in eight years.”

The AP also reports federal money makes up about 15 percent of public broadcasting’s funding, with other sources including corporations and viewers.

And it’s not just funding that’s benefiting from the Obama administration. The President has taped an intro for the 40th anniversary of “Sesame Street” and Michelle Obama made an appearance on the show earlier this month. Check out the First Lady on “Sesame Street” after the jump…

• CBS News is hosting a pre-party on the second floor of the convention center. There will be a live band and expected CBS guests include RNC Chairman Michael Steele, WH Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton and Rep. Chris Van Hollen, also CBS-ers Lara Logan, Chip Reid and Nancy Cordes, among others.

• Those sitting at the dinner’s head table include President Obama and his Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, Congressional leaders Steny Hoyer, James Clyburn and Louise Slaughter. RTCA dinner chair Heather Dahl will emcee the night and there are, of course, two awards given at this dinner- the David Bloom and Joan Barone Awards.

• If you were lucky enough to score an “absolutely non-transferable” invitation to Phil Griffin‘s MSNBC after-party at the Historical Society of Washington, you might also be lucky enough to get served a drink by guest bartender Rachel Maddow. We hear she’ll be mixing drinks at a special upstairs bar. You can also get a preview of her bartending skills after the jump.

• And just who’s on the guest list for this exclusive after-party? We hear David Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett, Sen. Susan Collins, Eric Holder, Larry Summers, Rep. Aaron Schock and Ken Salazar- all guests of NBC and MSNBC- may make appearances post-dinner.

• While we’re sure NBC snagged plenty of tables for that guest list above, a few other shops in town have really cut back. Tammy Haddad‘s blog White House Correspondents Weekend Insider reports PBS is down to two tables (from 15 in years past) and ABC News just one. PBS was still able to land Gen. Jim Jones as a guest- he’ll be sitting with Judy Woodruff and PBS President CEO Paula Kerger. George Stephanopoulos can’t make it so Jonathan Karl will hold court at RTCA for ABC.
