Finally! FNC’s Bret Baier Awards Media Matters Research Fellow Trivia Prize

We can all breathe easier now that FNC’s Bret Baier has finally seen the light. Yesterday he awarded that Media Matters research fellow who has been on his ass for weeks now the grand prize for his weekly Twitter trivia contest, despite the fact that Eric Hananoki has been making a mockery of his contest.

Well, a mockery if you think it’s wrong that Hananoki ask Baier about remarks made by FNC colleague Bill Sammon about President Obama being a socialist — Sammon was caught on tape saying he he had linked Obama to socialism even though he didn’t believe it.

When the weekly Twitter trivia contest came up, Hananoki took it as a chance to ask Baier about Sammon, and tagged a question onto one of his trivia answers. Baier was not going to take that sitting down. So he began instituting strict Twitter trivia rules and awarding second place contestants first place prizes. He relentlessly blocked Hananoki with all the fair and balanced juice he could muster. But each week Hananoki was one step ahead with a new Twitter account and more right answers to Baier’s trivia questions. Funny enough, he changed his own avatar to Sammon’s picture.

This week Hananoki, again under an assumed handle — BHOisSocialist — won the game. Baier’s Q: Which liberal commentator did Brit Hume reference last night for saying “The war on terror is over”? The answer: Peter Beinart. Baier tweeted the winner as he normally does. But mysteriously, this winning tweet soon vanished into thin Twitter air. Nevertheless, he wrote Hananoki by Direct Message and asked him to pick his prize.

The Fox News mug. That should go over well in the Media Matters newsroom.

Washington Iced

This week’s Time magazine cover:
WHY WASHINGTON IS FROZEN

Time contributor Peter Beinart on three ways to break the cycle.

1. More New Hampshires. If every state took New Hampshire’s example to heart—and allowed independents to vote in presidential primaries and congressional ones … more moderate candidates win. The result? “A bipartisan rebirth.”
2. Former Crossfire Hosts Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson might like this one: More Crossfires. Create new talk shows and blogs in which liberals and conservatives interrogate one another’s views – like … CNN’s Crossfire.
3. More Ross Perots. A powerful third-party voice demanding that both parties take real steps to solve problems. Republicans would still disagree profoundly…, but they would feel greater pressure to amend rather than kill them.

Cox v. Alterman: The Showdown

Only in Washington would “fights” take place on the rooftop of a fancy hotel where they’re serving fresh orange juice and omelets made to order. Still, we’ll take what we can get…

At John McLaughlin’s Sunday brunch, Time.com’s Ana Marie Cox and The Nation’s Eric Alterman “went at it” (and by “went at it” I mean discussed such things as whether or not Peter Beinart is a neocon or not…Oh no you didn’t!!!).

Anyway, it turns out that Dana Milbank wasn’t the only one who had a secret tape recorder handy all weekend. The Observer’s Michael Calderone also had one and recorded (and transcribed) the “fight” between Cox and Alterman.

The “real” juicy part?

ERIC ALTERMAN: That’s your job. You’re paid by Time to–

ANA MARIE COX: Actually, I would love to hear my job description from you. Yes, what is my job at Time?

ERIC ALTERMAN: Why are you being so hostile to me?

ANA MARIE COX: I’m not being hostile, am I?

[snip!]

ERIC ALTERMAN: If Time were paying me, I would feel a responsibility to the institution to try and improve it. Then I might talk to Rick about it. But Time is not paying me, so my only job is to say what I think is the truth. And that’s what I do.

ANA MARIE COX: Rather than engage with someone that you have a relationship with?

ERIC ALTERMAN: He knows what I think. I wrote a column for The Nation called “Time Is on Their Side.” Rick read it. I made my point.

ANA MARIE COX: And you talked to him yesterday.

ERIC ALTERMAN: About you.

Rowr.

Like a kitten.
