Friends and Colleagues Fete Embeds’ Palin Book

Former campaign embeds Scott Conroy and Shushannah Walshe‘s book on Sarah Palin is out this week, and friends and colleagues feted the CBS reporter and former Fox reporter at last night’s DC book signing and party.

Conroy and Walshe signed books and read an excerpt to a crowd at Borders downtown. They also took about 30 minutes of questions from the audience, which will air on C-SPAN’s Book TV this weekend.

Earlier yesterday, Conroy visited his old stomping ground at Georgetown University. He had planned to do a book signing, but the campus book store was not selling his book (yet)– a funny story he shared over drinks last night’s book party at Agraria.

Steve Chaggaris, Rob Hendin, Jane Chick, Michelle Levi and Fernando Suarez were there from CBS. Sasha Issenberg, Mike Memoli, Jonathan Martin, Mike Madden, Erin McPike and Peter Hamby were also around to celebrate at Agraria in Georgetown. Attorney Ben Ginsburg, who was national counsel to the Bush-Cheney and Romney campaigns, also attended.

“Sarah From Alaska: The Sudden Rise and Brutal Education of a New Conservative Superstar” is published by Peter Osnos‘ PublicAffairs. And Chaggy, McPike and Hamby all got shout-outs in the book’s acknowledgments after the jump.

President Obama is taking his argument for a health care plan to a new place: Rodale magazines, where he or his wife appear on coming covers of Prevention, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, and the new publication Children’s Health (via NYT).

NEWSPAPERS

NYT: After months of bitter struggle that included a threat to shut down The Boston Globe, the New York Times Company and the paper’s largest union reached a tentative contract settlement on Tuesday night, with employees agreeing to significant cuts in wages, benefits, and job security.

WaPo’s Katharine Weymouth spoke Saturday at the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism’s commencement- the school also honored Roxana Saberi with its Medal for Courage. Weymouth said, “I believe firmly that great journalism – the need for good old-fashioned beat and enterprise reporting — has never been more important. Certainly no one would argue that there isn’t enough news to report anymore. Nor do I believe that people’s interest or engagement in the news has changed. What has changed is the number of voices out there, the role that media plays in our lives and the business model that has supported journalism. This is a time of great transformation — but it’s also a time of great anticipation and creativity.” Read her speech here.

Playbook reports this morning that there are “so many technicians and journalists are on the grounds that the Secret Service ran out of laminated “PRESS” passes and was giving “TOUR” tags to reporters.”

“Real World” is coming to DC, as you’ve heard, but there are major cuts coming to MTV.

ONLINE

The Iran election has increased new traffic to Twitter. Hitwise notes traffic to Twitter.com rose 13% June 12 compared with the previous Friday and was up 23% June 17 versus the prior Wednesday. (h/t WebNewser)

ABCNews.com has announced it is producing a daily half-hour program about the crisis in Iran. “Nightline: Iran in Crisis” will be broadcast at 11:30am and available on the Nightline section of ABCNEWS.com and on ABC News NOW, the network’s 24-hour digital channel.

BOOKS

Roxana Saberi is working on a memoir of her arrest, sentence and release in Iran, to be published by HarperCollins in March 2010, according to the AP.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is penning a memoir expected out in spring 2011, a few months after former President George W. Bush’s book comes out, the AP points out. In an interview with the AP, Cheney said, “I want my grandkids, 20 or 30 years from now, to be able to read it and understand what I did, and why I did it.”

NEWS NOTES

We seriously did not believe this when we first heard it, but now there’s video proof. Remember Buzz Aldrin, the second man to set foot on the Moon, an American icon? NEWSPAPERS

Boston Globe: The Boston Globe‘s largest union reached a tentative deal with the New York Times Co. shortly after 3 a.m. this morning, agreeing to a substantial pay cut, unpaid furloughs, and modifications to the lifetime job guarantee provisions that protect almost 200 employees in the Boston Newspaper Guild.

NYT is over all this negative coverage.

Time looks at whether Amazon’s latest will re-kindle the newspaper industry. Josh Quittner: On Wednesday, Amazon is expected to introduce a new, bigger-screen Kindle aimed at the textbook market and newspapers. Joining CEO Jeff Bezos onstage will be New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger — signaling some kind of partnership between the Times and Amazon.

Does Rupert Murdoch have a plan to start charging for online content in the works? The Daily Beast: According to a knowledgeable source, the team is said to be “looking at hardware” to deliver the content in a “user-friendly way.”

CBS’ Katie Couric is in the Middle East with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and blogging about the trip here.

According to Politico’s Playbook, Secretary Timothy Geithner will be on “Charlie Rose” tonight.

NEWS NOTES

Today is the Commerce subcommittee’s hearing on “The Future of Journalism,” chaired by Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) and with testimony by Steve Coll, Arianna Huffington and others.

An update on jailed journalists Roxana Saberi, Laura Ling and Euna Lee from TVNewser here. Saberi’s case will be heard next week in an Iranian appeals court. She has been on a hunger strike since April 18th. Lee and Ling will soon face trial in North Korea and a possible conviction could carry a sentence of up to 10 years.

• FNC’s Chris Wallace was in Memphis last night speaking to a crowd at Rhodes College, where his son is a freshman. From the Commercial Appeal: In lamenting the difficult business environment faced by traditional media — especially for the newspapers he says he cherishes — Wallace said, “You’re not seeing the decline of Fox News, baby!” (via TVNewser)

• NYT columnist Thomas Friedman is the lucky recipient of the Urbino Press Award. Really lucky– Friedman will travel to Urbino, Italy this summer to pick up the award. Washington Whispers has the dets here.

“Four years into the war, Iraq correspondents would give their reporting mixed, but generally positive reviews and think they have covered the U.S. military more effectively than they have covered the citizenry of Iraq,” a Pew release announced.

This morning check out “a special video series entitled, ‘A Nation Divided,’ illustrating the Iraq war’s influence on the presidential campaign by award-winning producer Travis Fox” on washingtonpost.com. “The three-part series focuses on populations in three primary states: Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire.”

The AP reports, “A Banc of America analyst downgraded shares of the New York Times Co. Wednesday, saying Wall Street expects unrealistically strong spending from luxury and national advertisers.”

Reuters reports, “Nearly 90 percent of U.S. journalists in Iraq say much of Baghdad is still too dangerous to visit, despite a recent drop in violence attributed to the build-up of U.S. forces, a poll released on Wednesday said.”

E&P reports, “Nearly two-thirds of Americans do not trust press coverage of the 2008 presidential campaign, according to a new Harvard University survey, which also revealed four out of five people believe coverage focuses too much on the trivial — and more than 60% believe coverage is politically biased.”

AJR reports, “As U.S. news organizations have backed away from foreign news coverage, the Associated Pressâ€™ international report has become increasingly vital.”

The New York Observer reports, “Bill Keller announced moments ago in a memo that there will be layoffs at The New York Times. He wrote that it will not affect reporters, but a hiring freeze will be strictly enforced.”

RADIO

USA Today reports, “Friendly satellite radio rivals Sirius (SIRI) and XM (XMSR) enter the final month of 2007 with reasons to be wary. They have to worry whether the softening economy will hurt new car sales — the largest generator of new satellite radio subscribers.”

An NBC release announced, “According to Nielsen Media Research data, ‘NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams’ was the most-watched network evening newscast, winning the week of November 19-27, 2007. The NBC broadcast posted its best total viewer delivery since February 12, 2007 and its best advantage since December 18, 2006.”

Eric Boehlert writes, “Last Friday marked something of a milestone for ABC’s widely acclaimed news program Nightline when it aired a detailed look at life inside the chaotic emergency room at the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad. The significance? It was the first time since July 18 that Nightline had broadcast a firsthand news report from Iraq examining the on-the-ground effects of the still-unfolding war there.”

Media Week reports, “More than 18 months after The New York Times pulled out of its joint cable venture with Discovery Communications, the Discovery Times Channel is shedding its outdated moniker.”

“Bill Hemmer On The Difference Between FNC And CNN”

The Examiner reports, “The news of the untimely death of Redskins star Sean Taylor traveled quickly Tuesday morning. CNN was the first to break the news around 5am Tuesday but soon after that local outlets WTOP, WMAL, NBC4, FOX5, ABC7 and CBS9 all were reporting the sad news of death of Taylor as the lead news story.”

Washington Post reports, “The Federal Communications Commissions voted for a set of watered-down cable regulations late last night, as increasing tensions among the agency’s five members allowed the industry to largely avoid tough rules.”

St. Petersburg Times takes a “Peek inside CNN’s inner sanctum”
