Politico’s VandeHarris: ‘Some Exciting Editor Moves…’

What passes for “exciting” in Washington would be a real snoozer in most other cities. But let’s proceed. Today Politico‘s VandeHarris (a human fusion of Editor-in-Chief John Harris and Executive Editor Jim VandeHei) sent a memo to reporters on new editors in their midst.

The memo announces major promotions:

Marty Kady: For the past two years, he has been the congressional editor. He will now be Deputy Managing Editor for Politico and Editor of Politico Pro (a position formerly held by the temper-filled Tim Grieve, who will no longer be working that closely with humans). Kady will be dealing with Grieve on managing the more than 60 employees who work for that section.

Rachel Smolkin: She has been deputy editor and then editor of White House coverage. She will now be Deputy Managing Editor for Politico.

See the other moves… continued…

Dear WaPo: Your Memos Are Snoozefests

WaPo has two exciting promotions. Unfortunately they were announced in one very boring memo. Steven Ginsberg is the new national political editor and Rachel Van Dongen is deputy political editor and will oversee the PostPolitics site. Ginsberg is a “creative thinker” with an “entrepreneurial spirit.” Van Dongen is “energetic,” and “politically savvy” and brings “considerable experience” to the job. She is formerly an editor and reporter for Roll Call, CQ, The Economist and Christian Science Monitor.

Congratulations to Ginsberg and Van Dongen!

See the memo, but get caffeinated before you do. It’s soundbite-ridden, wordy and we’re now napping…

continued…

As we told you yesterday, the Washington Post’s Political Browser launched today. Check it out here. Full release after the jump.

Washington Post Launching “Political Browser”

So…

Roll Call’s Rachel Van Dongen left the paper recently and joined the Washington Post. To do what? Well, she wouldn’t say at first.

“She couldn’t/wouldn’t tell us when she left,” said one Roll Call’r. “It’s something new.”

“It was described to me as some kind of political wiki project, separate from .com and the paper but not entirely,” said one more.

“She wouldn’t go in to details when she left,” said another.

“All we were told was that it was the ‘Washington Post Company, where
she will work on a government-related Internet venture’,” said another. “And she was very close-lipped about the whole thing.”

But, then Rachel, tucked away on the Post’s 9th floor, started sending out emails like this:

My name is Rachel Van Dongen and I am an editor here at the Washington Post. I am looking to staff a new political internet venture. Would you be interested in sending along your resume and some clips?

Here’s what we’re hearing: An announcement is slated for Monday for “Political Browser,” which will highlight the best political coverage around the Web (not just WaPo articles).

Have we already seen this kind of idea before? Yes. Will they somehow avoid repeating the other attempts at this? We’ll see.

>UPDATE: The Political Browser is real but it’s not Rachel’s project, we hear. So what is Rachel up to?

Paul Singer Leaves National Journal For Roll Call

From National Journal’s Charlie Green:

All the best to Paul Singer, who’s accepted a position as a senior investigative reporter at Roll Call, where he will be reuniting with Roll Call Editor Charlie Mitchell. As Paul puts it, “Charlie and I first began working together in 1990, and several of my other friends and former colleagues work at Roll Call. Someone reminded me of the old line from the Blues Brothers movie–’We’re getting the band back together, man!” Paul has been a valued member of the NJ staff since starting here nearly three years ago. He’s covered lobbying and the executive branch for NJ, as well as help supervise our interns. We’ll miss not only Paul’s articles for NJ (such as his piece that traced how the Katrina money was spent and his cover story on the Bush White House’s efforts to transform the executive branch) but also his infectious enthusiasm and endless energy. Paul’s last day at NJ will be February 16.

From Roll Call’s Charlie Mitchell:

I am pleased to announce the hiring of Paul Singer to join our investigative reporting team. Paul most recently has been covering Katrina-related misdeeds among other enterprise projects as a staff writer for National Journal. Prior to that he was A.P.’s Cleveland bureau chief and has years of experience rooting for skeletons in various congressional and administration cellars. He will be working closely with Rachel Van Dongen and pursuing a variety of enterprise projects. Paul’s first day will be Feb. 20.
