Military Times’s Dan Lamothe: The FishbowlDC Interview

Say hello to Dan Lamothe, the newly promoted senior writer for Military Times. He grew up in Chicopee, Mass., once home to the world’s largest kielbasa. Who says tough military reporters (who grew up in the home of the largest kielbasa) who cover three star generals and who’ve been embedded in a particularly violent section of southern Afghanistan can’t watch “Glee” and like it? And who says a tough white military reporter with self-described big ears can’t request Will Smith to play him in a movie? He can. Read on.

If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be? Pabst Blue Ribbon. I grew up blue-collar, and yet I suddenly spend more time than I ever thought possible in hipster D.C.

How often do you Google yourself? Eh, probably more frequently than I should. I do think it’s important for a journalist to know how his or her work has reverberated on the Web, though.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to an editor (or vice versa)? I tend to keep a cool head pretty well at work, so I’m probably a bore here.

Who is your favorite working journalist? Given my current line of work, I follow C.J. Chivers and Rajiv Chandrasekaran pretty closely. I ran into both of them in Afghanistan, and they were great guys.

Do you have a favorite word? “Maelstrom” is a current favorite. So is “pizza.” For different reasons, of course.

Who would you rather have dinner with – First Lady Michelle Obama or Bestselling Author and former V.P. candidate Sarah Palin? Definitely Sarah Palin. I’d ask her about the Marine whose rear end became famous after I blogged about it from Afghanistan. (Read that here.) I went out on patrol with Marines searching for snipers and was ambushed while on foot with Marines living in a beat-up Afghan schoolhouse, but the tattoo piece was by far the most popular one online.

Find out what a journalism prof once wrote on the top of one of Lamothe’s essays after the jump…

This year’s awards are being announced in Manhattan tonight.

The reporting team of Bob Woodward, Rajiv Chandrasekaran and Karen DeYoung won for best news interpretation for their series on the Obama Administration’s search for a new Afghanistan strategy. WaPo photographer Sarah Voisin won for images of residents in Mexican communities affected by drug wars.

The John Faber Award for Best photographic reporting from abroad in newspapers or news services went to WaPo’s Sarah Voisin.

Not included among the 37 OPC awards won by the newspaper, a book called The Good Soldiers by WaPo’s David Finkel.
Buffet-Gate…Part Two

Earlier on FishbowlDC: “For WaPo Big Wigs, A Special Buffet”

We told you about some grumblings over at the Washington Post regarding Rajiv Chandrasekaran‘s special buffet on election night. One Postie writes in to us, claiming that “it was even worse”; namely, that at around 2 A.M., the big wigs began popping champagne bottles in <strike>Rajiv’s office</strike> at the newsdesk in the center of the newsroom, followed by picture taking.

For WaPo Big Wigs, A Special Buffet

So…

Each election night at the Washington Post, a big buffet spread is provided to staffers, many of whom stay up late and work hard while the results roll in. It’s not only a tradition, but a fairly democratic one at that: Staffers like the fact that everyone from Don Graham on down gets a plate and waits in line and it can provide for some fun encounters.

But lots of Posties are grumbling about what they saw on Election Night: A separate buffet held in the office of National editor Rajiv Chandrasekaran that struck many as a bit exclusive and elitist. Other seen snacking with Rajiv: Post political editors Tim Curran and Bill Hamilton.

What’s Up Weisman?

All Posties can do lately is talk about the latest rumor: That Jonathan Weisman — who left the Washington Post for the WSJ this month — was considering returning to his old paper.

What sparked all of this? Namely: That Weisman asked to meet with the Post’s national editor, Rajiv Chandrasekaran, at Caribou Coffee, and that the Wall Street Journal canned a planned front page story by Weisman.

Weisman told Politico’s Michael Calderone that the rumors were “dead wrong” and that the coffee was purely social, but Posties tell FishbowlDC that they’re not buying the denial.

“The rumors are absolutely true,” one Postie tells us. “He’s running through a couple of bumps in his new place.”

Still, from both Weisman’s own statement on the matter and what Posties themselves are guessing, Weisman isn’t likely to actually make the switch back.
