Morning Chatter

Quotes of the Day

POLITICO TAKEOVER: Aside from Mike Barnicle and WaPo and MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart, “Morning Joe” had three Politico employees on set today. They included Executive Editor Jim VandeHei, and reporters Maggie Haberman and Mike Allen.

Dare to dream

“If I could get one less email a day calling me the c-word I would be happy.” — Progressive talk radio host Stephanie Miller appearing on CNN Wednesday night.

Predawn Politico Playbook Publish Time: 4:50 a.m.

Journo Love

“When I did @CNN this morning w/ @rolandsmartin I didn’t yet realize I was sitting next to @NABJ’s Journalist of the Year. Congrats my man!” — National Journal‘s Chris Frates, who’s also apparently sporting a mullet lately. Indeed, as reported by Maynard Institute’s Richard Prince, Roland Martin has been named the National Association of Black Journalists’ Journalist of the Year. The award will be presented to him at the national convention in Orlando in August. Martin was previously awarded the organization’s President’s award.

Pundit has issues on Acela

“To the snoring asshat sitting next to me on the Acela: I’m going to do to you what I used to do to my ex when he snored & you won’t like it.” — MSNBC Contributor Jimmy Williams.

First World Problems: Maddow or Morgan?

“Having a tough time deciding between Maddow and Piers right now. Two totally different shows. No DVR. Who. Will. Win?” — BuzzFeed‘s Dorsey Shaw, who subsequently had these big thoughts on cable news: “Jay Leno should go to Fox News. Matt Lauer should go to CNN. Alex Wagner should go to 7pm. I should take the day off.”

Forget writer’s block…

“Experiencing serious case of Twitter block. Nothing funny or interesting to say about Ashley Judd.” — The New Yorker‘s Ryan Lizza.

Harshness is…

“That sound you hear is 10,000 political hacks unfollowing @AshleyJudd” — Politico‘s Ben White.

Fishbowl Interview With the Fresh Prince of D.C.

Say hello to Richard Prince, a veteran journalist who writes “Richard Prince’s Journal-isms,” a news column on diversity issues in the news media, for the website of
the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education. He often, and sometimes harshly, calls journalists and publications out for not covering black journos enough and even once hilariously harped on Washington City Paper and FishbowlDC that there were no blacks among the Washington, D.C.’s “Boybanders.” It’s hard to envision a black Ezzy (WaPo‘s Ezra Klein) or Hazy (MSNBC’s Chris Hayes) but life is full of wonderful surprises. Most recently Prince won the Ida B. Wells award for his diverse reporting. Read on…He may have the best new question for the FishbowlDC Interview that we’ve seen so far.

If you were a carbonated beverage, which would you be? Dr Pepper.

How often do you Google yourself? Not as often as I should. Too many
others with the same name.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to an editor/boss (or vice
versa)? “Sure, I’ll be happy to take that assignment!”

Who is your favorite working journalist and why? Nicholas Kristof of
the New York Times travels the world reporting on outrages that would otherwise get little attention. And he was among the first to take advantage of video. But to call him my favorite would eliminate too many friends and colleagues.

Do you have a favorite word? Party.

Who would you rather have dinner with – CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, MSNBC’s
Chris Matthews or Fox News’ Megyn Kelly? Tell us why. Matthews would probably produce the most copy.

The Earth’s human population is dying out and you must save it. You
will spend a romantic evening with either Scandal’s Kerry Washington,
any of the women from FNC’s “The Five” or MSNBC’s S.E. Cupp. Who will
it be? (None is not an option.) Kerry Washington.

What swear word do you use most often? Does “damn” count?

You’ve just been told the big news: You get to have your own Sunday
morning talk show. Who will be on your roundtable? (Pick four
journalists or pundits types.) A multicultural grab bag. It would be
counterprogramming.

On a serious note for a moment, if you could have dinner with a person
who has died, who would it be? Wonder what Martin Luther King would
say about the icon he has become.

Who is your favorite Boybander and why? (Ezzy, Hazy, Weigel,
Attackerman, Beutler) Who? Cultural disconnect.

When you pig out what do you eat? Why pig out?

What is your absolute favorite item of clothing in your closet? We want the fabric, the brand, the store and the price if possible. If it’s a certain kind of underwear we don’t want to know about it. A black cotton T-shirt from Kingston, Jamaica inscribed with a map of the city. Cost $1,100 at a tourist store. In
Jamaican dollars.

Pick one: Mad Men, Scandal or Grey’s Anatomy. Mad Men.

Fishbowl Summer Superlatives – THE RESULTS Part Deux

On Thursday, we began rolling out the results of our Summer Superlatives and today, you get to meet the rest of the winners. Thanks for voting.

Today’s results kicks off with the Best Dressed category. This cage match was between Politico’s Ken Vogel and Kate Nocerra, WaPo’s Jonathan Capehart, RCP’s Erin McPike, and CNN’s Kate Balduan. This contest wasn’t even close. While we had a feeling Capehart would be the clear winner, he was a very distant second to Kate Balduan! Congrats, Kate. Your prize is a $1 gift card to Fashion Bug!

Moving right along, we asked you to name Washington’s Best Writer. Your choices were The Weekly Standard’s Matt Labash, The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza, NJ’s Major Garrett, NYT’s Mark Leibovich, Ashley Parker and Maureen Dowd, WaPo‘s Karen Tumulty, HuffPost’s Eliot Nelson, and Washingtonian’s Luke Mullins. This one was a close one to call. It was a two-man race between Garrett and Labash, but in the end, Major Garrett came through and was voted the winner. It should be noted that today is Garrett’s birthday.

Which Washington journo is Most In Need of a Salad? We asked you to choose between Politico’s Jonathan Allen and Jonathan Martin, Slate‘s Dave Weigel, HuffPost’s Peter Cherukuri and Jason Linkins, FNC’s Bob Beckel and Bret Baier, and author and former TWTer Rich Miniter. This was another category where it wasn’t even close. The FNC team of Bob Beckel and Bret Baier were the heavy favorites and <del>waddled</del> walked their way to an easy victory.

Next up, we had the category that saw more votes than any other, Sexiest. Your sultry selections were AP‘s Steve Peoples, Atlantic Publisher Justin Smith, Washingtonian‘s Kate Bennett, Real Housewives of D.C.’s sassy stylist Paul Wharton, CNN’s Brianna Keilar, NBC4′s Doug Kammerer and Maynard Institute’s Richard Prince. The winner by a slim, sexy (and consenting) majority was Brianna Keilar.

On the other side of the coin, we have Who is Most In Need of a Makeover? Your choices were CQ Roll Call (the entire publication), The Daily Caller’s Matthew Boyle, TWT’s Stephen Dinan, Publicist Wendy Gordon, DCRTV’s Dave Hughes and Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher. Once again, this was a two-man race between Christopher and Boyle. While Christopher just looks generally disheveled, the overall train wreck that is Matthew Boyle was voted the winner. Congrats, Matt. We hear that Paul Wharton may be available to help turn you into a beautiful swan.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Best On-Air Personality. The heavy-hitters on this list were ABC’s Jake Tapper, The Daily Caller’s Tucker Carlson, MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, CBS’s Bob Schieffer and Nancy Cordes, HuffPost‘s Sam Stein, and WaPo’s Nia-Malika Henderson. At the end of the day, the experience of Schieffer couldn’t keep up with your winner, Jake Tapper!

Congratulations to all of our winners.

Why Richard Prince and the “Metro Seven” Took on Washington Post

After getting his start at New Jersey’s Star-Ledger, Richard Prince (who is also in the running for our “Sexiest Journo” poll) went on to Washington Post where he became part of the “Metro Seven,” a group of African-American journalists who took issue with the paper’s discriminatory practices. Though the case never made it to court, the “Metro Seven” inspired women journalists at the Post to strive for equal opportunity.

“I think a lot of it was institutional racism. That is, too much of ‘We’ve always done it this way,’” he recalled in Mediabistro’s latest So What Do You Do? interview. “It was just the unrest in the black community and the Kerner Report, which came out in 1968 and generated a lot of media coverage about two nations: one black and one white. And, at the time, the media was one of the big contributors to this, because of its lack of diversity. So, it was very gratifying to play a role in that whole transition.”

Business Week reports, “Ever since Brian L. The chatter picked up last fall, just before America’s largest cable company confessed that it would add fewer subscribers than expected in the fourth quarter. Some investors worried that, with growth slowing, Roberts might try to pick off Yahoo! Anchor Betty Nguyen took viewers on a tour of part of the newsroom ‘where our writers and our producers sit.’ It is now covered with blue tarp. The tornado shattered windows in the newsroom and damaged the roof in the atrium which, until 2003, was the studio for the CNN daytime program, Talk Back Live.” And, “After last night’s tornado, CNN was taking no chances today. The blog Newscast Studio added, ‘Today CNN was thrown another curve ball…CNN’s Frederica Whitfield uses the CNN International set to bring the news to the viewers.’”
