If you didn’t make it up to the rooftop of 101 Constitution Ave for Yahoo! News’ swanky soiree on Wednesday night, here’s a quick recap of what you missed:  Thrown by event extraordinaire Philip Dufour, the party was held in large part to welcome new DC bureau chief David Chalian.  In addition, the newsgroup used the opportunity to kick off their 2012 campaign coverage plans and to raise a glass to their partnership with ABC News.

Ross Levinsohn, Yahoo! EVP of the Americas  (and American University alum),  spoke about Yahoo! News’ expanding editorial coverage and presence in Washington to a crowd that included many familiar faces from ABC’s DC bureau:  Ann Compton, Jonathan Karl, Rick Klein, Polson Kanneth, Richard Kaplan, Amy Walter and Robin Sproul.  Also in attendance were WaPo‘s Dana Milbank, Neil Patel of the Daily Caller, NJ’s Chris Frates, Jane Mayer from the New Yorker, CNN’s Dan Lothian and Alex Mooney, Politico’s Marty Kady and Keach Hagey, Judy Kurtz of The Hill, NBC’s Adam Verdugo, MSNBC’s Karen Finney, CQ Roll Call’s Mark Walters and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.

Novelist Graham Moore with VP Joe Biden

Dealing with the spotlight from a famous mother or father can be drag.  Just ask Chelsea Clinton, Jackie Kucinich or Meghan McCain.  But as new novelist Graham Moore will tell you, having a political power parent also has its perks. While most authors receive a pat on the back after publishing their first book, Moore, the 29-year-old son of outgoing FLOTUS Chief of Staff Susan Sher, is being honored with a lineup of high-profile parties (two in the District alone).  Unfortunately for the fetes to follow, Moore’s first will be nearly impossible to top.

Hosted last night by Dr. Jill Biden and Susan Sher at the residence of the Vice President, an intimate group of  administration and media power players gathered to toast the first-time novelist and his book “The Sherlockian.” Trimmed out for the holidays, the glistening residence at One Observatory Circle welcomed a guest list that included Sec. Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, a bubbly and warm Justice Sonia Sotomayor , White House adviser Valerie Jarrett, Alan Greenspan and Ambassador Fujisaki of Japan to name just a few.

The fourth estate was represented by a number of faces from NBC – Andrea Mitchell, Norah O’Donnell with husband Geoff Tracy, Howard Fineman, Washington Bureau Chief Mark Whitaker and wife Alexis Gelber.  Glamour’s Linda Kramer Jenning, WaPo’s Amy Argetsinger, Huffington Post’s Sam Stein, SELF’s Marc Adelman, ABC News Washington Bureau Chief Robin Sproul, Tammy Haddad,  and Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times rounded out the media invitees. Author and journalist Christopher Hitchens, whose recent cancer diagnosis seemed to have little effect on his spirit, was also in attendance with his son and daughter who are visiting from London.

While joking that his publishers have been instructed to send all press clippings directly to his doting mother, Moore was interrupted by Vice President Joe Biden who walked down the steps of his home to surprise and congratulate the boyish new author.  How’s that for a first book party?

About 120 local writers and journos showed up to Local 16 last night to toast editorial director Howard Yoon’s newly promoted role of partner at the Gail Ross literary agency, including Bitch is the New Black author Helena Andrews; Politics Daily‘s Bonnie Goldstein; WCP‘s Michael Schaffer; NPR’s Miranda Kennedy, Lisa Shepard, and Madhulika Sikka; Sridhar Pappu; WaPo’s Steve Luxenberg, Rachel Weiner, Ylan Mui, and Alexandra Petri; Roll Call’s Emily Heil; HuffPost‘s Arthur Delaney, and ABC’s Robin Sproul (mother to the agency’s aforementioned Anna Sproul).

The Gail Ross Literary Agency will change names to The Ross Yoon Agency sometime next week, as soon as their new web site is complete.

Juleanna Glover opened the doors of her Kalorama home Saturday night to some of DC’s most powerful women in media to benefit the Rebecca Project for Human Rights. This is a group founded by executive director Malika Saada-Saar and Autumn VandeHei to advocate for women who have survived addiction, incarceration and poverty.

Women who have benefited from the Rebecca Project, the “Mother Leaders” attended the party, sharing their stories with special hosts Carol Browner, Tammy Haddad, Betsy Fischer (who had to leave early for a “Meet the Press” pretape with Secretary Hillary Clinton), Norah O’Donnell, Amy Holmes, Robin Sproul, Sally Quinn and Jessica Yellin.

It was most certainly a ladies night… CNN’s Dana Bash and Edie Emery, WaPo‘s Liz Spayd and Ceci Connolly, Politico‘s Nia-Malika Henderson and Kiki Ryan, Politics Daily‘s Emily Miller, msnbc.com’s Carrie Dann, Congress Daily‘s Erin McPike, Time‘s Jay Newton Small, The Hill‘s A.B. Stoddard, Washington Life‘s Janet Donovan, Christina Sevilla, Miss DC 2008 Kate Marie Grinold and Katie McCormick Lelyveld from First Lady Michelle Obama’s office attended. And the Glover sisters- TWT‘s Liz Glover, Becca Glover and Kristin Glover.

These ladies were joined by Politico‘s Jim VandeHei, host Autumn’s husband, O’Donnell’s husband Chef Geoff Tracy, NYT‘s Mark Liebovich, WaPo‘s Perry Bacon, Richard Wolffe, Winston Lord, Mix 107.3′s Tommy McFly, Lee Brenner, Mark Paustenbach, Pepper Watkins, Marc Adelman, Michael Feldman and White House economic advisor Austan Goolsbee. Also Susanna Quinn and Jack Quinn, and Shanti Stanton and Matt Stanton.

In remarks at the party, Saada-Saar thanked VandeHei and the women involved, “Our organization stands on the shoulders of many people.” “We come together to honor the work of these women, to honor the work of mothers and to really recognize what happens when we as women and mothers come together across the divides of race, class, education, lived experience and honor ourselves,” she said.

The event was sponsored by Goldman Sachs’s 10,000 Women, and Brown-Forman generously donated the party’s wine and martinis. Attendees could donate online or by pledge cards.

We think the President said it best- “The jokes may not be as good, but neither is the guest list.”

There were no TomKat or Ashton and Demi sightings. The biggest star (and highest dress slit) in the room was former Miss California Carrie Prejean, followed in star power by actor Tate Donovan and Angelina Jolie‘s brother James Haven.

But the 2009 RTCA dinner did light up the Washington Convention Center with DC journo star power- those attending included Andrea Mitchell, Chris Matthews, Lara Logan, Chip Reid, Major Garrett (check him out with Prejean in a photo after the jump), Chuck Todd, Jonathan Karl, Bill Plante, Savannah Guthrie, Ed Henry, Bill Press, Contessa Brewer, Luke Russert, Maureen Orth, Willie Geist, Mika and Joe, Judy Woodruff, Lawrence O’Donnell (and Norah and Kelly), Nancy Cordes, Steve Capus, David Bohrman, Robin Sproul, Heidi Collins, Carl Cameron, John Harwood, Mike Allen and Mark Whitaker to name a few.

As well as Robert Gibbs, Bill Burton and Laura Capps, Michael Steele (actually seated at a CBS table with Burton), Dana Perino, Samantha Powers, Ken Salazar (donning a cowboy hat), Austan Goolsbee, Gordon Johndroe, David Axelrod, Eric Holder, Sen. The dinner was a little unconventional than most. Before dinner was served, there were various performances by JibJab, the Onion News Network and Sweet Honey on the Rocks (a favorite of Michelle Obama, though she did not attend). RTCA chair and the evening’s emcee Heather Dahl introduced President Obama, who left soon after this remarks. The date of the dinner actually changed a few times to accommodate the President’s schedule.

The Joan S. Barone Award was presented by CBS’ Bill Plante to NBC congressional correspondent Mike Viqueira for his coverage of the bailout story on the Hill. Viqueira dedicated his award to Mary Dorman, the NBC Washington bureau’s longtime assignment desk manager who died early this year of cancer. The Bloom daughters also presented an award in their father David Bloom‘s memory. BBC’s Rome Hartman accepted on behalf of Orla Guerin. A video tribute to Bill Headline, Tony Snow and Tim Russert, all who passed this year, was also shown.

ABC tapped an in-house veteran to be acting Washington bureau chief for the next three months.

Sara Just, who has been heading up ABC’s political efforts on the Web, took over Monday for bureau chief Robin Sproul, who will be a visiting fellow at the Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard.
