Hey Politico! Check Your Nelsons

Will the real Bill Nelson (to the left) please stand up?! Things sure do get confusing when the subjects of your reporting have a common last name.  Take NPR’s Vivian Schiller and Ron Schiller, for example.  For years we thought they were the same person, married, brother and sister…or all of the above.  Turns out they’re not the same person at all.  They’re not even related!?!

But that same multi-family last name phenomenon might explain why Politico‘s running today a photo of Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson to accompany a story about Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida.  Similar but different, Politico.

Update: Politico swapped pics a mere seven minutes after we posted.  Solid reaction time, guys.

Ron Schiller Resigns from the Aspen Institute

Our crystal ball was correct. Ron Schiller, the former NPR VP who was caught via hidden camera making stupid statements about Republicans, the Tea Party and Jews, has resigned from his new position at the Aspen Institute (before it began).  Jim Spiegelman, the organization’s director of communications, released a statement this morning:

“Ron Schiller has informed us that, in light of the controversy surrounding his recent statements, he does not feel that it’s in the best interests of the Aspen Institute for him to come work here.”

In the wake of the controversy, NPR CEO Vivian Schiller (same name, no relation) resigned from her post this morning.

Crystal Ball Prediction: NPR Edition

We’re not fortune tellers but a quick glance into our crystal ball (hidden camera) this morning showed us National Public Radio Sr. VP Ron Schiller‘s future…and it involved an unemployment line.  But first we saw Ronnie spewing wicked remarks about Republicans and the Tea Party while dabbling in the topic of Jewish control of the media. Schiller also noted that NPR  “would be better off without federal funding” (I’m sure that will can be arranged).

This all took place over lunch with two men (investigative journos) who identified themselves as potential NPR donors from the fictional and seemingly extremist “Muslim Education Action Center.”

Schiller joined NPR  in October 2009 after serving as Vice President for Alumni Relations and Development at the University of Chicago. Luckily for NPR CEO Vivian Schiller, Ron is no relation.

Watch the whole hot mess at Daily Caller here.

UPDATE:  Apparently Schiller accepted a job at the Aspen Institute just last week.  I guess the question is: will the non-profit keep him in the wake of this controversy?

Another Schiller Named NPR Brass, No Nepotism Involved

NPR CEO and President Vivian Schiller announced this week that Ron Schiller has been appointed to the position of Senior Vice President for Development of NPR and President of the NPR Foundation.

The press release is explicit- “they are no related.”

He begins in the position October 15th, succeeding Mark Vogelzang, and will lead NPR’s fundraising programs. Press release after the jump…
