summersuperlatives(main)

Last week we announced nominees in FishbowlDC’s 2014 Summer Superlatives in three categories Hottest TV Personality, Most in Need of a Reality Show, and Future/Former Boy Band Members.

Before we announce Round 2 of 3, we’re here with an update of where things stand in the final 72 hours of the first round of the competition.

For much of last week, CNN’s Jake Tapper and Brianna Keilar were neck and neck for first place in the Hottest TV Personality category. FOX 5′s Steve Chenevey has since taken the top spot with 34.32% of the category votes. Also in the running: FOX News’ Bret Baier and NBC Washington’s Angie Goff and Eun Yang. One thing we’ve learned, it is fun to pit persons from the same network against each other.

New to the superlatives competition is this year’s Future/Former Boy Band Members category. Leading is The Hill’s Kevin Cirilli, previously with POLITICO, who has more than 50% of the votes. In second with nearly a quarter of the support is CNN cutie Peter Morris. Also nominated, NBC Washington’s David Culver, WJLA’s Kevin Lewis and Scott Thuman, and The Atlantic’s James Hamblin.

Rounding out Round 1 of voting is the ever-important superlative for Most in Need of a Reality Show. In it, there’s 6 great contenders, including POLITICO’s Big Money author Ken Vogel with nearly half the votes thus far. BuzzFeed’s John Stanton and ESPN’s Britt McHenry are in a close second and third, respectively, along with Pamela Sorensen, of Pamela’s Punch, the “Reliable Source” ladies Helena Andrews and Emily Heil, and the Washington Life magazine touting John Arundel.

Biden Snaps Selfie with Ride 2 Recovery

Vice President Joe Biden spoke to – and takes a selfie with – Ride 2 Recovery before sending them off on a 350 mile trek from DC to VA Beach.

Hey Isn’t That…?

…every journalist in DC on “House of Cards” ????

FishbowlDC caught up with CNN’s Candy Crowley a few days back to chat a bit about her star turn in “HoC” But she was far from the only DC journo to mix it up with the Underwoods this season. We pinged a few more to see what the experience was like:

Morris Jones, News Channel 8

On being sworn to secrecy: “I’m in two different spoiler scenes and I had to sign a non disclosure agreement.  I guess if I revealed any details before the public release, I might be found floating in the Potomac!”

Scott Thuman, ABC 7

On what question he would ask Frank Underwood: “Easy. Are you looking for a new press guy?”

Julianna Goldman, Bloomberg News

On watching the first season: “The cast was a guest of Bloomberg’s at the White House Correspondents Dinner. I hadn’t seen the show and everyone kept coming up to the actors to talk about the season. So, I binged and basically watched the entire season on a transatlantic flight last summer. I then felt very dark inside.”

Major Garrett, CBS News

On which character he would interview: “President Garrett Walker…My first question: How could you despoil the regal name Garrett with such a weak and vacillating approach to the presidency?”

Spotted Around Town: WJLA’s Scott Thuman and 95.5′s Sunni

Last night was the one year anniversary of the opening of restaurant Mari Vanna, the DC home of authentic Russian cuisine and vodka (lots and lots of vodka). Managers Victor Star and Sergii Andriushchenko threw a big ole’ party to celebrate, but we, alas, were unable to go. Apparently some other local media celebs were in attendance, however.

WPGC 95.5′s midday host Sunni popped by.

WJLA’s Thuman Welcomes Wife to Newsroom

Thuman and Godfrey in 2008

You know what they say…the couple that reports together, stays together.  Okay, no one says that but we sure hope it’s the case for Scott Thuman and Autria Godfrey.  Married in 2008, the dynamic duo is now sharing both a home and newsroom since Godfrey joined her anchorman hubby at WJLA earlier this month.

After freelancing for Tribune, CBS Newspath and Foxnews Edge over the past couple of years, Godfrey landed a gig as a general assignment reporter for both ABC7 and NC8 where Thuman recently re-signed his contract as Senior Political Reporter and anchor.  Thuman tells FishbowlDC that he and Godfrey haven’t worked together before but have crossed paths in the field while covering events like President Obama’s inauguration, Pentagon’s 9/11 memorial ceremony, elections and recent package bombs at Maryland government facilities.

“As for working together…so far it’s great,”  Thuman said.  “Because our schedules almost never coincided, we often were just ships passing in the night.  While working in the same newsroom could be too close for comfort, it’s a real positive for us,”  Thuman concluded.

You can catch Scott anchoring “Good Morning Washington” from 4.30-7.00 a.m. or at 6.00 pm daily when he returns to cover politics.
