Schieffer Toasted and Roasted

CBS News President Sean McManus and Senators Sam Nunn and Lindsey Graham roasted Bob Schieffer at the National Press Club’s Fourth Estate Awards on Friday night. Colleagues and friends such as CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz, who in a taped appearance joked that he had never heard of Schieffer or his Sunday show, came out to toast the venerable host of Face the Nation.

But of all the big names in the room, it was Bob’s wife Pat who really stole the show. In her introduction of Schieffer, she recalled, “On our anniversary last year, my husband asked me if there is anything that I hadn’t done but wished I had.” “I told him yeah – George Clooney,” she said to a room full of laughter. And guests didn’t have to look far for entertainment. Schieffer’s band, Honky Tonk Confidential, which includes CBSers Dianna Quinn and Kaylee Hartung, performed “TV Anchorman” and Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places.” Even MSNBC’s Luke Russert took the stage to pay tribute with his rendition of “Shout.”

Spotted at the event were Jan Crawford, Nancy Cordes and Bob Orr, DC Bureau Chief Chris Isham, Face the Nation EP Carin Pratt, Mary Hager, Rob Hendin, Christine Delargy, Politico’s Michelle Levi and CBS News’ Paul Friedman and Barbara Fedida who traveled down from NYC for the dinner.

Past honorees include Helen Thomas, who was in attendance, and Walter Conkite.

The Most Powerful People in TV News

TVWeek has released their “10 Most Powerful in TV News” list today. Who else but Fox News President Roger Ailes (who has long been called the “most powerful name” in news) tops the list. For as much as cable and national news channels squabble amongst themselves, all vying to be on top, they’ve all landed somewhere on this list.

Some numbers have more than one correspondent underneath. For instance, number 10 is soon-to-be ABC “This Week” host Christiane Amanpour and CNN’s Candy Crowley.

Highlights:

2. Steve Capus, NBC News; Phil Griffin, president, MSNBC
3. Jom Klein, president, CNN/U.S.
4. Sean McManus, president, CBS
5. Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart
6. David Westin, ABC News
7. FNC’s Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck
8. Barbara Walters and the Women of “The View”

Good morning FishbowlDC! Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line.

What we know and what we’re reading this rainy Thursday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | TV | ONLINE | MAGAZINES | NEWS NOTES | WEST WING REPORTAGE | AWARDS & EVENTS | IN MEMORIAM

NEWSPAPERS

WSJ has taken the top spot among daily newspapers, taking over USA Today.

NYT has decided not to sell the Boston Globe.

Tom Brokaw‘s op-ed in today’s WaPo: “A Peace Prize to Share.”

TV

On his radio show yesterday, MSNBC’s Joe Scarbourgh ribbed on Chuck Todd with ABC’s Jake Tapper. Scarborough: “I expect he’s going to have a Billy Ray Cyrus mullet soon” and “His body odor has gotten worse over the past ten years.” To which Tapper responded: “There’s so much body odor in the [White House] press area, I can’t tell who’s who.”

More on “Goatee Gamble” on FBDC later today.

NBC and CBS News Presidents Steve Capus and Sean McManus commented on comments their reporters Richard Engel and Lara Logan have made on the war in Afghanistan.

PBS’ Jim Lehrer seems to have an affinity for rap, or at least one of his producers does. An economist was apparently bumped from “Newshour” for a rapping economist. We don’t blame you, “Newshour.”

ONLINE

Arianna Huffington calls for Vice President Joe Biden to resign.

New venture: Michael Kinsley is launching a business site for Atlantic.

MAGAZINES

Rolling Stone‘s Obama cover won an ASME prize.

NEWS NOTES

The US military in eastern Afghanistan recently changed its media embed rules to ban pictures of troops killed in the war. (Photo District News)

And on a lighter note, Rush Limbaugh apparently isn’t going to get to buy the St. Louis Rams.

WEST WING REPORTAGE

After an appearance on CNN this weekend in which she called Fox News “a wing of the Republican party,” White House communications director Anita Dunn is on the cover of WaPo‘s Style section today.

Most interesting: “A source inside the White House, who was not authorized to speak about strategy meetings, said Dunn went out front against Fox first and foremost because it was her job, but also because it potentially gave the administration the opportunity to distance itself from the flap with the Roger Ailes-led news channel once she leaves the communications job.”

Mike Allen also fact-checks the piece in this morning’s Playbook… “UM, NO: “She advised President Bill Clinton.” Anita never worked for Bill Clinton.”

And more on Fox News vs. the White House.

AWARDS & EVENTS

CBS News Remembers Hewitt

• CBS President Leslie Moonves: “In the history of journalism, there have been few who were as creative, dynamic and versatile as Don Hewitt. The depth and breadth of his accomplishments are impossible to measure, because since the very beginnings of our business, he quite literally invented so many of the vehicles by which we now communicate the news. He will be missed by our entire industry, but most of all by his many, many friends at CBS both past and present who continue to be inspired by his professionalism, grit and dedication to the truth.”

• CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus: “Don’s creativity, drive and outright enthusiasm were an inspiration to everyone at CBS News. He shaped the television news business from its earliest moments through the creation of his masterwork, 60 MINUTES, which is still a vibrant and successful symbol of his colossal influence.”

• CBS “60 Minutes” Executive Producer Jeff Fager: “It is a sad and difficult time for all of us who work at 60 Minutes. Don was a giant figure in our lives and will always have an impact on this broadcast – there’s a part of him in every one of us, and it affects every decision we make. He will be remembered as a brilliant editor and story teller, an irrepressible force who changed journalism forever. Those of us who knew him and worked with him will remember him simply as a great guy to be around. He was full of life, usually armed with a joke, and he always found a way to make our stories better. I will miss Don very much.”

CBS Statements On The Death Of Walter Cronkite

Katie Couric, anchor and managing editor, CBS Evening News, correspondent, 60 Minutes: “When I think of Walter Cronkite, I think of his high journalism standards, integrity – but most of all his humanity. I think he was so trusted because he exhibited a sense of purpose and compassion, night after night. He was the personification of excellence.”

Don Hewitt, executive producer, CBS News, creator of 60 Minutes and Cronkite’s first executive producer on the CBS Evening News: “How many news organizations get the chance to bask in the sunshine of a half-century of Edward R. Murrow followed by a half century of Walter Cronkite?”

Andy Rooney, 60 Minutes commentator: “I’ve been proud over the years to see Walter become, not just one of the best known people on television but one of the best known people in the whole world of people. He was proud of me, too and there’s no better feeling in life than that. I wouldn’t trade Walter Cronkite liking me for just about anything I’ve ever had.”

We posted earlier a statement from Sean McManus, President of CBS News and Sports.
In Memoriam: Walter Cronkite 1916-2009

“The most trusted man in America,” Walter Cronkite died this evening at the age of 92, his family and CBS News announced. The legendary journalist anchored the CBS Evening News for nearly 20 years and was the reporter for which the term “anchorman” was coined. He had been suffering from cerebrovascular disease.

Americans associate Cronkite with some of the biggest stories of the 20th century, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, man’s first landing on the moon and the Vietnam War.

President of CBS News and Sports Sean McManus released this statement tonight: “It is impossible to imagine CBS News, journalism or indeed America without Walter Cronkite. More than just the best and most trusted anchor in history, he guided America through our crises, tragedies and also our victories and greatest moments. No matter what the news event was, Walter was always the consummate professional with an un-paralleled sense of compassion, integrity, humanity, warmth, and occasionally even humor. There will never be another figure in American history who will hold the position Walter held in our minds, our hearts and on the television.”

“Our job is only to hold up the mirror, to tell and show the public what has happened.” -Walter Cronkite

Farewell Tom

From an internal email sent by CBS’ Sean McManus, obtained by FishbowlDC:

I’d like to take a moment to let anyone know who may not that Tom Mattesky is retiring from CBS News today. Tom has chalked up more than 33 years of reporting experience in his long and successful career.

He has been Deputy Washington Bureau Chief for CBS News since September 1995, the critically important “second-in-command” to our bureau chiefs — first Al Ortiz and then Janet Leissner. Tom was involved in all aspects of the newsgathering and management of that bureau, our largest, and represented CBS News to and with the other networks for all Network pool activities.

He was a producer for the “Eye on America” segments of the CBS EVENING NEWS (1993-95). Beginning in 1989 when he moved to Washington, Tom was CBS News’ chief White House producer. He also was a lead producer for the network’s presidential campaign coverage in 1992.

Before that, Tom was based in the CBS News Atlanta bureau, covering, among other stories, the network’s space and aviation beats. His first assignment at CBS News was as a Southeast regional producer for Newsnet (now NEWSPATH). He joined CBS News in 1985.

Tom was a reporter, producer and news executive at WBTV, the CBS affiliate in Charlotte, N.C. (1979-85) and a reporter at WDBJ, the CBS affiliate in Roanoke, Va. (1975-79).

His journalism career began as a reporter at his hometown newspaper, The Evening Sentinel in Carlisle, Pa. (1974-75).

Among Tom’s many awards is an Emmy for investigative reporting for a series of reports about problems with the nation’s medical helicopter fleet.

He is a graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.

Please join me in appreciating a truly fine career in journalism and in wishing Tom the very best as he begins the next chapter of his life.

There is a happy hour tonight in Tom’s honor.

Isham: The Announcement

From CBS’ Sean McManus:

After more than 20 years of outstanding work at CBS News, our D.C. bureau chief, Janet Leissner, has decided to retire. It is with sadness that I make the announcement today of Janet’s decision, as we are losing a great colleague and one of the finest journalists on our team.

Janet came to me several months ago to discuss the possibility of lessening her workload so she could start to transition into the next phase of her life. Janet’s commitment and service to this news organization speaks for itself. While she will be retiring, the integral role Janet played throughout her career at CBS News will not be forgotten and her list of accomplishments is long. She has been crucial to the success of the Network’s political reporting and coverage, has played a major role in election coverage and has been instrumental in landing many presidential interviews. I hope that Janet will continue to have a role at CBS News in the future.

Janet will be succeeded by Chris Isham, the Chief of Investigative Projects for ABC News. Chris is an extraordinary journalist and uniquely qualified to succeed Janet as bureau chief. I’m very much looking forward to working with him and having the benefit of his vast experience and knowledge in Washington, D.C. Chris’ appointment is effective September 4.

Chris has built an extraordinary investigative unit that is widely recognized as one of the most successful of its kind in television news. Under his leadership, the ABC News Investigative Unit broke many exclusive reports on a wide range of topics from terrorism to political corruption. Chris has produced programming for all ABC News broadcasts and platforms and he organized the first major network interview with Osama bin Laden in May 1998. Chris and his unit have been recognized with all of the major awards in the broadcast industry.

Chris joined ABC News as an associate producer in 1978, and before that he worked in the documentary unit at NBC News. He graduated Yale College in 1976 and Groton School in 1971. He was born in Berlin and has lived in Moscow, Hong Kong, Paris, Haiti and Washington D.C.

I know you join me in expressing deep appreciation for Janet’s remarkable contributions to CBS News and wish her all the best.

At the same time, please welcome Chris to the Division.
