Kurtz Commended For Facing Fire

Howard Kurtz‘s apology, delivered on live national television Sunday, has been received as any dramatic apology would be. Some people are buying it. Some aren’t.

On his CNN media news program “Reliable Sources,” Kurtz offered his side of the story on what led to the mea culpa in the first place: Deadline pressure and his own lack of due diligence were to blame for his erroneous report last week that NBA player Jason Collins, who had just come out as gay, didn’t disclose that Collins his prior engagement to a woman. Collins had, in fact, been open about the engagement, mentioning it in a column for Sports Illustrated.

On Friday we questioned whether Kurtz would cover his own ass by covering his own ass on the show. He did. And for the occasion, CNN brought in NPR’s David Folkenflik and Politico‘s Dylan Byers to probe him.

There was plenty of in-house love for Kurtz. In a separate segment on the show, attorney Lisa Bloom was on to discuss coverage of the Jodi Arias case. Before offering her legal analysis, she said she would take a second to “go off script.” She praised Kurtz for “raising the bar” for journalistic accountability (while rattling off her own media resume).

“Kudos to Howard Kurtz,” tweeted Kurtz’s CNN colleague Piers Morgan. “He took his Jason Collins-clanger on the chin today like a Mike Tyson right hook.”

The compliments also poured in from elsewhere. FNC anchor Greta Van Susteren wrote on her Gretawire blog that everyone should “stop slapping Howie Kurtz.”

“Not one of us is perfect. We all make mistakes,” Van Susteren wrote. At the start of the year, Kurtz had to offer a separate apology for wrongly attributing a quote to Van Susteren about then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

At TVNewser, our sister site, Gail Shister wrote after the apology that she hopes CNN head Jeff Zucker will continue to support Kurtz.

Things are looking up for females on at least some of the Sunday morning programs this weekend, as we conduct our routine count of how many wangs will appear on the shows. Please note minor and major changes to the feature. This week we’re including “Washington Week” with Gwen Ifill despite the fact that it airs live on Friday and repeats on Saturday. As you can see, the program is not allergic to women. This week you’ll also notice a smaller-sized photograph. FishbowlMatt approached yesterday saying some were offended by the larger sized penis picture as it was rubbing some the wrong way. So we’ve shrunk the penises and framed them in gaudy gold for a more refined look.

Politics Daily Loses Exec Editor to RealClearPolitics

Executive Editor Carl Cannon is leaving AOL’s Politics Daily for RealClearPolitics.com. Word has it that Politics Daily could fold in the next 10 days as soon as HuffPost‘s acquisition with AOL closes.

Arianna Huffington and Politics Daily Editor-in-Chief Melinda Henneberger are not known to be close. But it was the TheWrap‘s Sharon Waxman who alluded to the possibility of Politics Daily falling by the wayside in a Feb. 8 story in which Huffington declared that AOL would not “skew left” and that staff losses were coming. On Politics Daily, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong was vague and noncommittal: We’re going to work through this in the next 30 to 45 days. “Our job is to put the best things together… My guess is that the majority of AOL’s brands that can stand on their own will continue to stand on their own. Those brands where there are synergies will be put together.”

Henneberger did not return email requests for comment. Cannon confirmed his departure.

Amidst Complaints HuffPost Supports Sanity Rally

HuffPost doesn’t pay many of its bloggers, but come the end of October, Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington will foot the bill for thousands of New Yorkers to board shuttle buses to attend Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart‘s “Rally to Restore Sanity” in Washington. The Wrap‘s Josh Dickey and Sharon Waxman have the alleged lowdown on the reaction inside HuffPost – which they say isn’t favorable.

But HuffPost CEO Eric Hippeau offers another perspective. He told FishbowlDC through a spokesperson: “Arianna decided the rally was a worthy cause, and an exciting one the company would gladly stand behind, and she was right. HuffPost, along with the thousands who have signed up for the bus ride to DC, look forward to October 30th. And we see it as a good sponsorship opportunity.”

Mike Allen’s Playbook reports, “Jim Pinkerton quit his Newsday column and resigned his Fox News contract to join Gov. Huckabee as a senior adviser to help fill out his policy proposals. Pinkerton tells Playbook he was lured by Ed Rollins, his boss in the Reagan White House political-affairs office, who said it was a chance to ‘restore the Reagan coalition,’ Pinkerton recalled. ‘I thought, ‘I’m not going to turn THAT down,’ Pinkerton recalled.”

PFAW reports that the Virginian-Pilot has reported that Pat Robinson is interested in purchasing the Norfolk based newspaper.

Fox Business reports, “The New York Times Company’s stock on Wednesday hit a price it hasn’t seen in almost two decades. Shares of the company known for its namesake flagship newspaper hit a low of $15.12 yesterday, a price the stock has not seen since 1988. The stock recovered slightly on Thursday, however.”

Reuters reports, “CBS Corp will see growth in 2008 in ‘every single division’ and no short-term effects from a looming economic downturn or Hollywood’s writers strike, Chief Executive Les Moonves told analysts on Thursday.”

Bloomberg reports, “A group that includes Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. accused broadcast-industry lobbyists of interfering with U.S. regulators’ tests of mobile Internet devices that operate on unused television airwaves.”

FOX News Channel tell us it had its highest-rated debate/event so far this ’07-’08 political season, according to Nielsen Media Research with the South Carolina Republican event from last Thursday. Check out the AP’s analysis of the debate. TVNewser reports, “In early Nielsen estimates, Fox News Channel’s airing of the GOP debate last night drew 3.6M Total Viewers and 1.04M in the A25-54 demo. If the numbers hold, it will be FNC’s highest rated debate yet and the 5th most watched of this election cycle.”

Dow Jones reports, “News Corp. (NWS) denied Thursday making any offer for Monster Worldwide Inc. (MNST), calling a report on the Seeking Alpha blog untrue. Seeking Alpha reported that News Corp. head Rupert Murdoch sent a letter to the board of the online-recruitment company offering $4.8 billion for it. Monster has a market cap of $3.6 billion.”
