Marie Claire: How Pissed Off Are GOP Women?

Marie Claire addresses a hot topic in their August issue that pertains to the alleged “War on Women” that has been infiltrating the headlines for some months now. The story by ABC News’ Shushannah Walshe: “How Pissed Off Are Republican Women?” and it addresses the question that many people are asking: Is the Republican Party antiwoman?

The right-leaning media is going to have a field day with this as Marie Claire definitely sides against the R’s. The story reports that several incidents have taken in place in recent months to raise this question i.e. Republican pols have tried to make it more difficult for women to get birth control and abortions, they lobbied to create a stricter definition of rape, opposed a bill addressing gender-based wage discrimination and several high-profile Republican males have made off-key remarks about women and Rush Limbaugh’s comment that a female student was a ‘slut’ and a ‘prostitute’.” Even “many Republican women say that the party’s attitudes are behind the times – and are causing a rift in their loyalties.”

An excerpt:

Even many republican women say the party’s attitudes are behind the times—and are causing a rift in their loyalties. “more women are concerned about the party’s direction on social is- sues,” says Kellie Ferguson, executive director of republican majority for choice. This is “galvanizing republican women to speak up,” she says.

CNN’s O’Leary Falls Victim to Faulty Transcript

Drop this into the category of: This could happen to anyone. In an interview broadcast Sunday by C-SPAN, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made the following comment: “I did go to law school. I didn’t practice law, but I did go to law school.” A writeup of the interview by ABC News’ Shushannah Walshe, however, got it wrong causing a Twitter mess for CNN’s Lizzy O’Leary. Walshe, who wrote up the interview, tweeted that the story had been corrected 15 minutes after being published and that she had been working off a transcript that got it wrong.

O’Leary scrubbed her initial tweet on the issue which called out Romney for saying that he had not gone to law school, despite Romney not actually saying that. “Uh, but he DID go to law school,” she had said, linking to Walshe’s writeup on Yahoo! News.

“The full quote kind of implies that he meant to say ‘I didn’t practice law,’ which is (I think) true,” one follower said in response. O’Leary replied that she believed that’s what Romney meant to say but that she “saw the full quote.”

Shortly thereafter O’Leary realized the error of her ways. “Did I get that Romney quote wrong? I will correct tweet if so,” she wrote. “Yeah. Check C-Span for the interview,” another follower replied. “He didn’t say it. He likely spoke too fast for the transcript.”

Then came the O’Leary’s admission: “I was wrong on Romney law school comment. Looks like mis-transcribed quote in posted story,” she tweeted, linking to C-SPAN’s original video. “Totally my fault for trusting a transcript without listening to the raw interview,” she said in a forthcoming followup.

O’Leary gets double points for acknowledging that she deleted her incorrect tweet: “Deleted inaccurate Romney tweet so it doesn’t bounce around,” she wrote.

Breitbart Book Gets Extreme Reviews

Andrew Brietbart‘s new book, Righteous Indignation: Excuse Me While I Save the World, came out Friday. The tome, which concerns a liberal agenda in the media and pop culture, has been a hot topic among media types. Reviews are already pouring in.

Surprise. Conservative sites love the book. Derek Hunter,a friend of Beitbart’s writing for the Daily Caller, says Breitbart “makes no apologies for his ‘in your face’ style, nor should he.” He praises Breitbart’s mind, saying it’s “like a shotgun – going a thousand miles an hour in every conceivable direction at once.” He gushes that the book “flows with clarity of purpose from one page to the next.” Hunter concludes: “If you trusted the media or the entertainment industry before reading this book, your eyes will be opened.” (Right, because everyone trusts the media.)

TWT also had kind words for Breitbart. Wes Vernon writes that the “narrative takes off like a rocket. The chapter ‘Breakthrough’ is in and of itself well worth the price of ‘Righteous Indignation.’” Breitbart is a “ubiquitous crusader.”

Liberal sites, on the other hand, weren’t so hot to trot on the book.

Conor Friedersdorf of the Atlantic, in a review titled “The Flaws of Breitbartism,” calls Breitbart’s convictions about America “shallow” and says “it’s hard not to pity the man,” not just because he’s “misinformed” but because he’s “built his whole professional life around opposing what in reality is a paranoid delusion.” Friedersdorf rips Breitbart to shreds, concluding: “The core worldview of Andrew Breitbart is easily refuted, bombastically phrased nonsense.”

The Daily Beast‘s Shushannah Walshe questioned several of Breitbart’s talking points in an interview. “Do you really believe the media wants to destroy you?” she asked. To which he replied “Yeah, I would say that the traditional media…are not happy that I exist.” “Do you really believe [the 'Institutional Left'] hate America, or is it just to rile people up?” “Do you get sick of being this angry all the time?”

We’re still waiting on Media Matters‘ review. We’re not 100 percent sure, but we think it may fall into the “critical of Breitbart” category.

Friends and Colleagues Fete Embeds’ Palin Book

Former campaign embeds Scott Conroy and Shushannah Walshe‘s book on Sarah Palin is out this week, and friends and colleagues feted the CBS reporter and former Fox reporter at last night’s DC book signing and party.

Conroy and Walshe signed books and read an excerpt to a crowd at Borders downtown. They also took about 30 minutes of questions from the audience, which will air on C-SPAN’s Book TV this weekend.

Earlier yesterday, Conroy visited his old stomping ground at Georgetown University. He had planned to do a book signing, but the campus book store was not selling his book (yet)– a funny story he shared over drinks last night’s book party at Agraria.

Steve Chaggaris, Rob Hendin, Jane Chick, Michelle Levi and Fernando Suarez were there from CBS. Sasha Issenberg, Mike Memoli, Jonathan Martin, Mike Madden, Erin McPike and Peter Hamby were also around to celebrate at Agraria in Georgetown. Attorney Ben Ginsburg, who was national counsel to the Bush-Cheney and Romney campaigns, also attended.

“Sarah From Alaska: The Sudden Rise and Brutal Education of a New Conservative Superstar” is published by Peter Osnos‘ PublicAffairs. And Chaggy, McPike and Hamby all got shout-outs in the book’s acknowledgments after the jump.

Good morning FishbowlDC!

Got a blind item, interesting link, funny note, comment, birthday, anniversary or anything of the sort for Morning Reading List? Drop us a line.

Happy Birthday to Jane Chick! What we know and what we’re reading this Tuesday morning…

NEWSPAPERS | ONLINE | MAGAZINES | BOOKS | NEWS NOTES | WEST WING REPORTAGE | JOBS

NEWSPAPERS

USA Today is also publishing two Michael Jackson commemorative publications- a 96-page glossy “Michael Jackson: King of Pop” and a 40-page tabloid “Michael 1958-2009″. Purchasing dets here.

ONLINE

Is Facebook trying to be Twitter?

Regardless, our favorite recent Facebook status- Chuck Todd: “RIP Billy Mays, the secret to his success? The beard!”

MAGAZINES

Magazine editors scrambled to get Michael Jackson on their covers, including Time, Newsweek, In Touch Weekly, Entertainment Weekly, Ebony, Billboard, Rolling Stone and OK!. According to the AP, Time put out a 64-page edition, separate from its regular weekly issue, exclusively covering Jackson- this was Time’s first special edition since the 9/11 attacks.

BOOKS

Former embeds Scott Conroy and Shushannah Walshe‘s book on Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin has a title- “Sarah from Alaska: Inside the Political Arrival That Rocked American Politics- What Really Happened, What It Means, and What’s Next for Sarah Palin.”

NEWS NOTES

LAT asks a good question- what is TMZ had been wrong about Jackson? “Has technology’s ability to deliver information at such a rapid pace corrupted us? It’s one thing to marvel at how social media sites have helped spread Iranian news that might otherwise have been censored; it’s quite another to become a culture that prizes speed over confirmed facts.” Read on here.

AP takes a look at the challenges foreign broadcasters face covering Iran.

WEST WING REPORTAGE

President Obama’s campaign scored two top prizes at Cannes Lions International Advertising Awards.

Also check out President Obama get interrupted yesterday by a quacking ringtone at an event at the White House.
